MotivationWith the advancement of sequencing technologies, genomic data sets are constantly being expanded by high volumes of different data types. One recently introduced data type in genomic science is genomic signals, which are usually short-read coverage measurements over the genome. An example of genomic signals is Epigenomic marks which are utilized to locate functional and nonfunctional elements in genome annotation studies. To understand and evaluate the results of such studies, one needs to understand and analyze the characteristics of the input data.ResultsSigTools is an R-based genomic signals visualization package developed with two objectives: 1) to facilitate genomic signals exploration in order to uncover insights for later model training, refinement, and development by including distribution and autocorrelation plots. 2) to enable genomic signals interpretation by including correlation, and aggregation plots. Moreover, Sigtools also provides text-based descriptive statistics of the given signals which can be practical when developing and evaluating learning models. We also include results from 2 case studies. The first examines several previously studied genomic signals called histone modifications. This use case demonstrates how SigTools can be beneficial for satisfying scientists’ curiosity in exploring and establishing recognized datasets. The second use case examines a dataset of novel chromatin state features which are novel genomic signals generated by a learning model. This use case demonstrates how SigTools can assist in exploring the characteristics and behavior of novel signals towards their interpretation. In addition, our corresponding web application, SigTools-Shiny, extends the accessibility scope of these modules to people who are more comfortable working with graphical user interfaces instead of command-line tools.AvailabilitySigTools source code, installation guide, and manual is available on http://github.com/shohre73.Contactshohre_masoumi@sfu.ca

We show that the playing sequence--the order in which players update their actions--is a crucial determinant of whether the best-response dynamic converges to a Nash equilibrium. Specifically, we analyze the probability that the best-response dynamic converges to a pure Nash equilibrium in random $n$-player $m$-action games under three distinct playing sequences: clockwork sequences (players take turns according to a fixed cyclic order), random sequences, and simultaneous updating by all players. We analytically characterize the convergence properties of the clockwork sequence best-response dynamic. Our key asymptotic result is that this dynamic almost never converges to a pure Nash equilibrium when $n$ and $m$ are large. By contrast, the random sequence best-response dynamic converges almost always to a pure Nash equilibrium when one exists and $n$ and $m$ are large. The clockwork best-response dynamic deserves particular attention: we show through simulation that, compared to random or simultaneous updating, its convergence properties are closest to those exhibited by three popular learning rules that have been calibrated to human game-playing in experiments (reinforcement learning, fictitious play, and replicator dynamics).

Die Anwendung der Ohrakupunktur kann zur Reduktion von akuten Schmerzen beitragen. Zu deren Einsatz in der zahnmedizinischen Akutschmerztherapie nach oralchirurgischen Eingriffen ist die Datenlage unzureichend. Diese Studie untersuchte die Effektivitat der Ohrakupunktur als additive Analgesiemethode zusatzlich zur Lokalanasthesie bei der operativen Zahnentfernung. In einer prospektiven, offenen, nichtrandomisierten Pilotstudie (entsprechend der CONSORT-Veroffentlichung) wurden 2 Kohorten mit jeweils 50 Patienten mit der Indikation zur operativen Zahnentfernung unter Lokalanasthesie mit Articain mit oder ohne den zusatzlichen Einsatz einer Ohrakupunktur hinsichtlich des Primarparameters Schmerzintensitat in Ruhe und unter Kaubelastung postoperativ bis zu zehn Tage beobachtet. Die Zuordnung zur Akupunkturgruppe erfolgte nach Patientenpraferenz und nicht randomisiert. Sekundare Parameter waren Angst und Symptome wie Schwindel oder Ubelkeit. Die demografischen Daten und der Verbrauch von Lokalanasthetika in beiden Gruppen unterschieden sich nicht signifikant. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Gruppen bestanden zu den verschiedenen Messzeitpunkten im Ruhe- und Kauschmerz (ANOVA, p = 0,004, p = 0,007), ebenso in der Angstempfindung (ANOVA, p = 0,0001), der Anzahl der Patienten mit einer Analgetikaeinnahme (χ2-Test, p = 0,017) und deren postoperativem Analgetikaverbrauch (T-Test, 0,001). Die NRS fur postoperative Kopfschmerzen, Schwindel und Ubelkeit nahmen in beiden Gruppen nur geringe Werte an. Trotz der Moglichkeit eines Erhebungsbias und methodologischer Einschrankungen im Studiendesign weist diese Untersuchung auf schmerz- und angstmodulierende Eigenschaften der Ohrakupunktur in der postoperativen Phase nach operativer Zahnentfernung hin. Moglicherweise kann Ohrakupunktur als nebenwirkungsarmes additives Verfahren, besonders bei Patienten mit praoperativer Angst, zur Reduktion postoperativer Schmerzen beitragen.

Many problems in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics involve classification, such as the classification of cell samples into malignant (cancer) or benign (normal). For such tasks, we propose EvoDNN, an evolutionary deep neural network that employs an evolutionary algorithm to evolve deep heterogeneous feed-forward neural networks. While the majority of current feed-forward neural networks employ user defined homogeneous activation functions, EvoDNN creates heterogeneous multi-layer networks where each neuron’s activation function is not statically defined by the user, but dynamically optimized during evolution. The main advantage offered by EvoDNN lies in that the activation functions do not need to be differentiable. This feature gives users a great degree of flexibility over which activation functions EvoDNN can utilize. This paper demonstrates how EvoDNN can simultaneously optimize each neuron’s weight, bias, and activation function, and empirically shows a superior performance compared to a backpropagation-trained feed-forward neural network at the cost of additional training time. In addition, advantages of the deep architecture of EvoDNN over our earlier approach, EvoNN, which employed a single hidden layer are discussed.

Background CT perfusion (CTP) and diffusion or perfusion MRI might assist patient selection for endovascular thrombectomy. We aimed to establish whether imaging assessments of irreversibly injured ischaemic core and potentially salvageable penumbra volumes were associated with functional outcome and whether they interacted with the treatment effect of endovascular thrombectomy on functional outcome.Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the HERMES collaboration pooled patient-level data from all randomised controlled trials that compared endovascular thrombectomy (predominantly using stent retrievers) with standard medical therapy in patients with anterior circulation ischaemic stroke, published in PubMed from Jan 1,2010, to May 31, 2017. The primary endpoint was functional outcome, assessed by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days after stroke. Ischaemic core was estimated, before treatment with either endovascular thrombectomy or standard medical therapy, by CTP as relative cerebral blood flow less than 30% of normal brain blood flow or by MRI as an apparent diffusion coefficient less than 620 mu m(2)/s. Critically hypoperfused tissue was estimated as the volume of tissue with a CTP time to maximum longer than 6 s. Mismatch volume (ie, the estimated penumbral volume) was calculated as critically hypoperfused tissue volume minus ischaemic core volume. The association of ischaemic core and penumbral volumes with 90-day mRS score was analysed with multivariable logistic regression (functional independence, defined as mRS score 0-2) and ordinal logistic regression (functional improvement by at least one mRS category) in all patients and in a subset of those with more than 50% endovascular reperfusion, adjusted for baseline prognostic variables. The meta-analysis was prospectively designed by the HERMES executive committee, but not registered.Findings We identified seven studies with 1764 patients, all of which were included in the meta-analysis. CTP was available and assessable for 591 (34%) patients and diffusion MRI for 309 (18%) patients. Functional independence was worse in patients who had CTP versus those who had diffusion MRI, after adjustment for ischaemic core volume (odds ratio [OR] 0.47 [95% CI 0.30-0.72], p=0.0007), so the imaging modalities were not pooled. Increasing ischaemic core volume was associated with reduced likelihood of functional independence (CTP OR 0.77 [0.69-0.86] per 10 mL, p(interaction)=0.29; diffusion MRI OR 0.87 [0.81-0.94] per 10 mL, p(interaction)=0.94). Mismatch volume, examined only in the CTP group because of the small numbers of patients who had perfusion MRI, was not associated with either functional independence or functional improvement. In patients with CTP with more than 50% endovascular reperfusion (n=186), age, ischaemic core volume, and imaging-to-reperfusion time were independently associated with functional improvement. Risk of bias between studies was generally low.Interpretation Estimated ischaemic core volume was independently associated with functional independence and functional improvement but did not modify the treatment benefit of endovascular thrombectomy over standard medical therapy for improved functional outcome. Combining ischaemic core volume with age and expected imagingto-reperfusion time will improve assessment of prognosis and might inform endovascular thrombectomy treatment decisions. We study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the surfaces of four of the regular polyhedrons: tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and cube. We show two types of eigenfunctions: nonsingular ones that are smooth at vertices, lift to periodic functions on the plane and are expressible in terms of trigonometric polynomials; and singular ones that have none of these properties. We give numerical evidence for conjectured asymptotic estimates of the eigenvalue counting function. We describe an enlargement phenomenon for certain eigenfunctions on the octahedron that scales down eigenvalues by a factor of $\frac{1}{3}$., 26 pages

Previously, we have introduced an improved version of jViz.RNA which enabled faster and more stable RNA visualization by employing compressed tree graphs. However, the new RNA representation and visualization method required a sophisticated mechanism of pseudoknot visualization. In this work, we present our novel pseudoknot classification and implementation of pseudoknot visualization in the context of the new RNA graph model. We then compare our approach with other RNA visualization software, and demonstrate jViz.RNA 4.0's benefits compared to other software. Additionally, we introduce interactive editing functionality into jViz.RNA and demonstrate its benefits in exploring and building RNA structures. The results presented highlight the new high degree of utility jViz.RNA 4.0 now offers. Users are now able to visualize pseudoknotted RNA, manipulate the resulting automatic layouts to suit their individual needs, and change both positioning and connectivity of the RNA molecules examined. Care was taken to limit overlap between structural elements, particularly in the case of pseudoknots to ensure an intuitive and informative layout of the final RNA structure. While some attention has been given to the process of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) to optimize the activation functions within hidden layers, available activation function sets have always been hard coded by the developers, and were immutable by users. In this paper, we present EvoNN. While many other Neuro-evolution based tools or algorithms focus primarily on the evolution of either Neural Network (NN) architecture, or its weights, EvoNN focuses on simultaneous evolution of weights and the activation functions within hidden layers. The main novely offered by EvoNN lies in that users can provide additional activation functions to the EvoNN system to be employed as part of the "alphabet" of available functions. This feature gives users a greater degree of flexibility over which functions the evolutionary optimizer can utilize. We employ a set of three test cases where we compare EvoNN to a standard NN, and observe encouraging results showing a superior performance of the EvoNN system. We also observe this increase in performance comes at the cost of additional run time, but note that for some applications, this can be a worthwhile trade-off.

Purpose – In this work, the authors show the performance of the proposed diploid scheme (a representation where each individual contains two genotypes) with respect to two dynamic optimization problems, while addressing drawbacks the authors have identified in previous works which compare diploid evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to standard EAs. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – In the proposed diploid representation of EA, each individual possesses two copies of the genotype. In order to convert this pair of genotypes to a single phenotype, each genotype is individually evaluated in relation to the fitness function and the best genotype is presented as the phenotype. In order to provide a fair and objective comparison, the authors make sure to compare populations which contain the same amount of genetic information, where the only difference is the arrangement and interpretation of the information. The two representations are compared using two shifting fitness functions which change at regular intervals to displace the global optimum to a new position. Findings – For small fitness landscapes the haploid (standard) and diploid algorithms perform comparably and are able to find the global optimum very quickly. However, as the search space increases, rediscovering the global optimum becomes more difficult and the diploid algorithm outperforms the haploid algorithm with respect to how fast it relocates the new optimum. Since both algorithms use the same amount of genetic information, it is only fair to conclude it is the unique arrangement of the diploid algorithm that allows it to explore the search space better. Originality/value – The diploid representation presented here is novel in that instead of adopting a dominance scheme for each allele (value) in the vector of values that is the genotype, dominance is adopted across the entire genotype in relation to its homologue. As a result, this representation can be extended across any alphabet, for any optimization function.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a study of the effect of different types of annealing schedules for a ribonucleic acid (RNA) secondary structure prediction algorithm based on simulated annealing (SA). Design/methodology/approach – An RNA folding algorithm was implemented that assembles the final structure from potential substructures (helixes). Structures are encoded as a permutation of helixes. An SA searches this space of permutations. Parameters and annealing schedules were studied and fine-tuned to optimize algorithm performance. Findings – In comparing with mfold, the SA algorithm shows comparable results (in terms of F-measure) even with a less sophisticated thermodynamic model. In terms of average specificity, the SA algorithm has provided surpassing results. Research limitations/implications – Most of the underlying thermodynamic models are too simplistic and incomplete to accurately model the free energy for larger structures. This is the largest limitation of free energy-based RNA folding algorithms in general. Practical implications – The algorithm offers a different approach that can be used in practice to fold RNA sequences quickly. Originality/value – The algorithm is one of only two SA-based RNA folding algorithms. The authors use a very different encoding, based on permutation of candidate helixes. The in depth study of annealing schedules and other parameters makes the algorithm a strong contender. Another benefit is that new thermodynamic models can be incorporated with relative ease (which is not the case for algorithms based on dynamic programming).

BACKGROUND: General anaesthesia (GA) during endovascular thrombectomy has been associated with worse patient outcomes in observational studies compared with patients treated without GA. We assessed functional outcome in ischaemic stroke patients with large vessel anterior circulation occlusion undergoing endovascular thrombectomy under GA, versus thrombectomy not under GA (with or without sedation) versus standard care (ie, no thrombectomy), stratified by the use of GA versus standard care.METHODS: For this meta-analysis, patient-level data were pooled from all patients included in randomised trials in PuMed published between Jan 1, 2010, and May 31, 2017, that compared endovascular thrombectomy predominantly done with stent retrievers with standard care in anterior circulation ischaemic stroke patients (HERMES Collaboration). The primary outcome was functional outcome assessed by ordinal analysis of the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 90 days in the GA and non-GA subgroups of patients treated with endovascular therapy versus those patients treated with standard care, adjusted for baseline prognostic variables. To account for between-trial variance we used mixed-effects modelling with a random effect for trials incorporated in all models. Bias was assessed using the Cochrane method. The meta-analysis was prospectively designed, but not registered.FINDINGS: Seven trials were identified by our search; of 1764 patients included in these trials, 871 were allocated to endovascular thrombectomy and 893 were assigned standard care. After exclusion of 74 patients (72 did not undergo the procedure and two had missing data on anaesthetic strategy), 236 (30%) of 797 patients who had endovascular procedures were treated under GA. At baseline, patients receiving GA were younger and had a shorter delay between stroke onset and randomisation but they had similar pre-treatment clinical severity compared with patients who did not have GA. Endovascular thrombectomy improved functional outcome at 3 months both in patients who had GA (adjusted common odds ratio (cOR) 1·52, 95% CI 1·09-2·11, p=0·014) and in those who did not have GA (adjusted cOR 2·33, 95% CI 1·75-3·10, pINTERPRETATION: Worse outcomes after endovascular thrombectomy were associated with GA, after adjustment for baseline prognostic variables. These data support avoidance of GA whenever possible. The procedure did, however, remain effective versus standard care in patients treated under GA, indicating that treatment should not be withheld in those who require anaesthesia for medical reasons.FUNDING: Medtronic.

In the US, deaths from prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999, prompting authorities to declare an "opioid abuse" crisis. Rising overdose deaths were attributed to trends in the overprescription of opioids, specifically the strength and duration of the initial prescription. We describe educational interventions designed to control healthcare professionals' (HCPs) opioid prescribing in the wake of this crisis. A review of relevant programs for practicing providers, medical residents, and medical students reveals a focus on educational interventions that we describe, borrowing from sociologist John McKinlay's metaphor for public health interventions, as "downstream." These downstream interventions concentrate on regulating and educating practicing HCPs rather than transforming the training environment for medical students and residents. We draw on theories of behavior change to call for the development of complementary "upstream" educational programs for future practitioners that focus on structural and psychosocial factors and may contribute to more sustainable behavior change outcomes.

RNA visualization is crucial in order to understand the relationship that exists between RNA structure and its function, as well as the development of better RNA structure prediction algorithms. However, in the context of RNA visualization, one key structure remains difficult to visualize: Pseudoknots. Pseudoknots occur in RNA folding when two secondary structural components form base-pairs between them. The three-dimensional nature of these components makes them challenging to visualize in two-dimensional media, such as print media or screens. In this review, we focus on the advancements that have been made in the field of RNA visualization in two-dimensional media in the past two decades. The review aims at presenting all relevant aspects of pseudoknot visualization. We start with an overview of several pseudoknotted structures and their relevance in RNA function. Next, we discuss the theoretical basis for RNA structural topology classification and present RNA classification systems for both pseudoknotted and non-pseudoknotted RNAs. Each description of RNA classification system is followed by a discussion of the software tools and algorithms developed to date to visualize RNA, comparing the different tools’ strengths and shortcomings.

Das EORTC QLQ-LC13 war das erste Lebensqualitatsfragebogen-Modul, das zusammen mit dem Kernfragebogen QLQ-C30 entwickelt und 1994 veroffentlicht wurde. Seit der Entwicklung des QLQ-LC13 Moduls haben sich einige neue Erkenntnisse in der Epidemiologie und erhebliche Fortschritte in der Diagnostik und Therapie des Lungenkarzinoms ergeben. Das uberarbeitete Fragebogenmodul soll im Kontext aller aktuell moglichen diagnostischen und therapeutischen Optionen entstehen, fur alle unterschiedlichen Lungenneoplasien (kleinzelliges Lungenkarzinom – SCLC, nicht kleinzelliges Lungenkarzinom – NSCLC) in metastasierten und nicht metastasierten Stadien verwendbar sein und generelle Aspekte der Lebensqualitat fur Lungenkarzinompatienten einbeziehen. Methodische Grundlage fur die Uberarbeitung ist das Phase 1–3 Schema gemas dem EORTC Modulentwicklungs-Manual.

Ribonucleic acid (RNA), a single-stranded linear molecule, is essential to all biological systems. Different regions of the same RNA strand will fold together via base pair interactions to make intricate secondary and tertiary structures that guide crucial homeostatic processes in living organisms. Since the structure of RNA molecules is the key to their function, algorithms for the prediction of RNA structure are of great value. In this article, we demonstrate the usefulness of SARNA{\hbox{-}}Predict, an RNA secondary structure prediction algorithm based on Simulated Annealing (SA). A performance evaluation of SARNA{\hbox{-}}Predict in terms of prediction accuracy is made via comparison with eight state-of-the-art RNA prediction algorithms: mfold, Pseudoknot (pknotsRE), NUPACK, pknotsRG{\hbox{-}}mfe, Sfold, HotKnots, ILM, and STAR. These algorithms are from three different classes: heuristic,dynamic programming, and statistical sampling techniques. An evaluation for the performance of SARNA{\hbox{-}}Predict in terms of prediction accuracy was verified with native structures. Experiments on 33 individual known structures from eleven RNA classes (tRNA, viral RNA, antigenomic HDV, telomerase RNA, tmRNA, rRNA, RNaseP, 5S rRNA, Group I intron 23S rRNA, Group I intron 16S rRNA, and 16S rRNA) were performed. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that SARNA{\hbox{-}}Predict can out-perform other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy. Furthermore, there is substantial improvement of prediction accuracy by incorporating a more sophisticated thermodynamic model (efn2).

This paper presents two in-depth studies on RnaPredict, an evolutionary algorithm for RNA secondary structure prediction. The first study is an analysis of the performance of two thermodynamic models, Individual Nearest Neighbor (INN) and Individual Nearest Neighbor Hydrogen Bond (INN-HB). The correlation between the free energy of predicted structures and the sensitivity is analyzed for 19 RNA sequences. Although some variance is shown, there is a clear trend between a lower free energy and an increase in true positive base pairs. With increasing sequence length, this correlation generally decreases. In the second experiment, the accuracy of the predicted structures for these 19 sequences are compared against the accuracy of the structures generated by the mfold dynamic programming algorithm (DPA) and also to known structures. RnaPredict is shown to outperform the minimum free energy structures produced by mfold and has comparable performance when compared to suboptimal structures produced by mfold.

Motivation: Ribonucleic acid is vital in numerous stages of protein synthesis; it also possesses important functional and structural roles within the cell. The function of an RNA molecule within a particular organic system is principally determined by its structure. The current physical methods available for structure determination are time-consuming and expensive. Hence, computational methods for structure prediction are sought after. The energies involved by the formation of secondary structure elements are significantly greater than those of tertiary elements. Therefore, RNA structure prediction focuses on secondary structure. Results: We present P-RnaPredict, a parallel evolutionary algorithm for RNA secondary structure prediction. The speedup provided by parallelization is investigated with five sequences, and a dramatic improvement in speedup is demonstrated, especially with longer sequences. An evaluation of the performance of P-RnaPredict in terms of prediction accuracy is made through comparison with 10 individual known structures from 3 RNA classes (5S rRNA, Group I intron 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA) and the mfold dynamic programming algorithm. P-RnaPredict is able to predict structures with higher true positive base pair counts and lower false positives than mfold on certain sequences. Many tools have been developed for visualization of RNA secondary structures using a variety of techniques and output formats. However, each tool is typically limited to one or two of the visualization models discussed in this paper, supports only a single file format, and is tied to a specific platform. In order for structure prediction researchers to better understand the results of their algorithms and to enable life science researchers to interpret RNA structure easily, it is helpful to provide them with a flexible and powerful tool. jViz.Rna is a multiplatform visualization tool capable of displaying RNA secondary structures encoded in a variety of file formats. The same structure can be viewed using any of the models supported, including linked graph, circle graph, dot plot, and classical structure. Also, the output is dynamic and can easily be further manipulated by the user. In addition, any of the drawings produced can be saved in either the EPS or PNG file formats enabling easy usage in publications and presentations.

Certain Lathyrus species have recently been found suitable as multipurpose legume crops in the southern Australian dryland regions, with a potential growing area of 100,000–300,000 ha. However, their use is limited by the presence, mainly in seeds, of 3-(- N -oxalyl)- l -2,3-diamino propionic acid (ODAP), an agent which causes lathyrism. Researchers at the Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA) have selected a high yielding variety of Lathyrus cicera (cv. Chalus) which contains consistently low levels of ODAP. The aim of the present study was to assess the nutritional value and animal health aspects of L. cicera cv. Chalus grain as a feed for sheep. Comparisons were made against lupin grain ( Lupinus angustifolius ). Eighty individually penned Merino wethers (35±0.3 kg) were allocated to four treatment groups of 20 sheep. Following a 4-week adjustment period, sheep were fed ad libitum the following treatment diets for up to 13 weeks: 35% lathyrus, 35% lupin, 70% lathyrus and 70% lupin. The remainder of the diet was oaten hay and minerals. After 10 weeks on treatments, 14 sheep per group were killed for carcass assessment. The remaining six sheep were fed to maintenance ME requirements for 1 week followed by a 10-day faecal and urinary collection period. Analysis of the grains showed that lathyrus contained less protein (28% versus 36%), fat (0.7 versus 4.1%) and fibre (25% versus 36% NDF), but more starch (42% versus 1%) and anti-nutritional compounds (ODAP, tannins, trypsin inhibitor) than lupin. Essential amino acid composition was similar for the two grains, as were in sacco degradabilities of dry matter (DM) (84% versus 81%) and protein (92% versus 94%). The feeding experiment showed that lathyrus had a higher nutritional value than lupin in terms of voluntary feed intake, liveweight gain ( P P P =0.05). Wool growth reflected ME intake, and there was no independent effect of grain type ( P >0.05). Results from the balance study showed that ME concentration was the same for both grains (14 MJ/kg DM). Microbial crude protein (CP) synthesis, estimated from urinary purine derivatives, was significantly lower for lathyrus than lupin, and was lower at 70% grain inclusion than at 35% ( P There were no visible or biochemical signs of ill health (in-appetence, lethargy, shaking or instability) in any sheep fed lathyrus. Several sheep fed the 70% lupin diet had mild diarrhoea, and two were eventually removed from the experiment due to anorexia. Meat from sheep fed lupin tended to be yellower than that from those fed lathyrus ( P =0.05). Apart from this, there were no differences in meat quality due to grain type (e.g. redness, pH, taste or tenderness). In conclusion, compared with lupin grain, low ODAP L. cicera grain appears to be of high nutritional value for sheep, with no evidence of adverse effects on sheep health.

Seasonal changes in the efficiency of charge separation in PSII were studied in Thuja occidentalis (L.) and Chamaecyparis lawsonia (A. Murray bis.). Maximum light-dependent charge separation decreased with decreasing temperatures in early winter in both species, but this was less drastic in Chamaecyparis than in Thuja. No positive relationship was seen between photoinhibition and irradiance. Rather, photoinhibition increased as photon flux densities decreased towards midwinter, and it decreased as photon flux densities increased towards spring. However, the decrease in maximum light-dependent charge separation was much stronger on the light-exposed upper surface of the twigs, where in Thuja visible browning occurred, than on the underside of the twigs. During spring, recovery of the photosynthetic efficiency and regreening were observed as both mean temperatures and irradiance increased. Transfer in midwinter of strongly photo-inhibited twigs of Thuja to temperatures close to 20 °C resulted in considerable recovery of PSII activity within several days when low light was also present. Recovery did not occur at temperatures close to freezing or at room temperature in darkness. An analysis of fluorescence quenching suggested photoprotective dissipation of excess radiation not only in the light harvesting antennae of PSII but also in the reaction centres. Reaction centre quenching appeared to be stronger in Thuja than in Chamaecyparis. PSI was fully active in twigs whether or not PSII was photoinhibited. The antioxidant ascorbate was almost fully reduced even in midwinter.

This paper presents a comparison of two genetic algorithms (GAs) for constrained ordering problems. The first GA uses the standard selection strategy of roulette wheel selection and generational replacement (STDS), while the second GA uses an intermediate selection strategy in addition to STDS. This intermediate selection strategy keeps only the superior offspring and replaces the inferior offspring with the superior parent. We call this selection strategy i>Keep-Best Reproduction (KBR). The effect of recombination alone, mutation alone and both together are studied. We compare the performance of the different selection strategies and discuss the environment that each selection strategy needs to flourish in. Overall, KBR is found to be the selection strategy of choice. We also present empirical evidence that suggests that KBR is more robust than STDS with regard to operator probabilities and works well with smaller population sizes.
