Abstract

The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. In this paper we describe the Core Science that we will address during the first four years of operation, providing examples of the breakthrough results that we will obtain when dealing with current open questions, such as the acceleration of cosmic rays, cosmology and fundamental physics and the new window, for the TeV energy band, of the time-domain astrophysics., Comment: Published in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics. 46 Figures, 7 Tables

Abstract

Quasars powered by supermassive black holes (MBH, $>10^8~M_{\odot}$) at $z\sim 6$ are predicted to reside in cosmic over-dense regions. However, observations so far could not confirm this expectation due to limited statistics. The picture is further complicated by the possible effects of quasar outflows (i.e. feedback) that could either suppress or stimulate the star formation rate (SFR) of companion galaxies, thus modifying the expected bias. Here we quantify feedback effects on the properties and detectability of companions by comparing cosmological zoom-in simulations of a quasar in which feedback is either included or turned-off. With respect to the no-feedback case, companions (a) directly impacted by the outflow have their SFR increased by a factor $2-3$, and (b) tend to be more massive. Both effects shift the [CII]158$\mu$m and UV luminosity functions toward brighter magnitudes. This leads us to conclude that quasar feedback slightly increases the effective quasar bias, boosting the number density of observable quasar companions, in agreement with what has been found around the brightest quasars of recent ALMA [CII] surveys. Deeper observations performed with JWST and/or ALMA will improve the statistical significance of this result by detecting a larger number of fainter quasar companions., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures; Accepted for publications in MNRAS

Abstract

Recent years have seen the adoption of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to predict the performance of large-scale applications, mostly at a coarse level. In contrast, we propose to use ML techniques for performance prediction at a much finer granularity, namely at the Basic Block (BB) level, which are single entry, single exit code blocks that are used for analysis by the compilers to break down a large code into manageable pieces. We extrapolate the basic block execution counts of GPU applications and use them for predicting the performance for large input sizes from the counts of smaller input sizes. We train a Poisson Neural Network (PNN) model using random input values as well as the lowest input values of the application to learn the relationship between inputs and basic block counts. Experimental results show that the model can accurately predict the basic block execution counts of 16 GPU benchmarks. We achieve an accuracy of 93.5% in extrapolating the basic block counts for large input sets when trained on smaller input sets and an accuracy of 97.7% in predicting basic block counts on random instances. In a case study, we apply the ML model to CUDA GPU benchmarks for performance prediction across a spectrum of applications. We use a variety of metrics for evaluation, including global memory requests and the active cycles of tensor cores, ALU, and FMA units. Results demonstrate the model's capability of predicting the performance of large datasets with an average error rate of 0.85% and 0.17% for global and shared memory requests, respectively. Additionally, to address the utilization of the main functional units in Ampere architecture GPUs, we calculate the active cycles for tensor cores, ALU, FMA, and FP64 units and achieve an average error of 2.3% and 10.66% for ALU and FMA units while the maximum observed error across all tested applications and units reaches 18.5%., Comment: Accepted at the 29th IEEE International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS 2023)

Abstract

IntroductionWest Africa, particularly Guinea-Bissau, heavily relies on cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.) production, which significantly impacts the countries’ economies. Cashew exhibits remarkable adaptability to impoverished and arid soils. Understanding producers’ socio-economic characteristics is crucial due to their potential influence on crop productivity and household income.MethodsThis study aims to characterize the socio-economic, productive, and phytosanitary aspects of cashew production in Guinea-Bissau, through 151 interviews with producers across all administrative regions of the country.ResultsOur findings reveal that cashew producers are mainly males aged 40 to 60, they typically manage plantations under 5 ha, with the smaller plantation areas located in Gabú, Cacheu, and Bolama. The age of the older trees averaged 31 years, with the highest age found in Biombo. Tree density averaged 286 trees per hectare, with higher values in Cacheu, Bafatá, and Bolama. Cashew nut yield in 2020 averaged less than 0.5 tons per hectare, with farmer-set prices generally lower than government determined prices. Oio, Tombali, and Bolama were the regions most affected by pests, while Oio and Cacheu (North) were the most affected by diseases. Top pests included termites, branch girdler, weaver ants, African grasshopper, and stem borer; while top diseases comprised gummosis, anthracnose, and dieback.DiscussionCharacterization of cashew production system is crucial at both national and regional levels to identify region-specific limitations and strengths, aiding in the formulation of tailored strategies for sustainable production. Moreover, cashew production plays a crucial role in household incomes in Guinea-Bissau, underscoring the necessity of developing integrated management strategies.
