This study aimed to analyze the impact of Zn on the growth and the antioxidant response of Lens culinaris. For this purpose, the seeds were germinated for 6 days in an MS/2 culture medium with different Zn concentrations. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein contents, and antioxidant enzymes activities were measured in both parts of the plant by spectrometry. The results showed that from the Zn concentration of 250 µM, the growth of lentils is inversely proportional to the concentration of Zn in the culture medium. The variations in the level of MDA are not very significant, but at 10 000 μM of Zn in the medium, the level becomes very important, whilst the total protein content decreased. Besides, the evaluation of enzymatic activities indicated that the decline of peroxidase (POD) is concomitant with the increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and that glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as catalase(CAT) reach their maximum activities at 10 000 µM and 3 000 µM of Zn in upper parts and roots, respectively. These findings revealed that MDA is a real indicator of oxidative stress in Lens culinaris and that this plant is tolerant to the presence of Zn in the culture medium by developing a powerful antioxidant system, but beyond a certain concentration its antioxidant system becomes ineffective and the plant enters a stress state.

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV–40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the
7 Li(p,n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. Commune avec THEO (CENBG); International audience; Determination of neutron-capture cross sections of short-lived nuclei is opening the way to understand and clarify the properties of many nuclei of interest for nuclear structure physics, nuclear astrophysics and particularly for transmutation of nuclear wastes. The surrogate approach is well-recognized as a potentially very useful method to extract neutron cross sections for low-energy compound-nuclear reactions and to overcome the difficulties related to the target radioactivity. In this work we will assess where we stand on these neutron-capture cross section measurements and how we can achieve the short-lived Minor Actinides nuclei involved in the nuclear fuel cycle. The CENBG collaboration applied the surrogate method to determine the neutron-capture cross section of 233Pa(T1/2=27 d). The 233Pa (n,γ) cross section is then deduced from the measured gamma decay probability of 234Pa compound nucleus formed via the surrogate 232Th(3He,p) reaction channel. The obtained cross section data, covering the neutron energy range 0.1 to 1 MeV, have been compared with the predictions of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. The importance of establishing benchmarks is stressed for the minor actinides region. However, the lack of desired targets led us to propose recently the 174Yb(3He,p γ) reaction as a surrogate reaction for the (n,γ) predetermined benchmark cross section of 175Lu. An overview of the experimental setup combining gamma ray detectors such as Ge and C6D6 in coincidence with light charged particles E-E Telescopes will be presented and preliminary results will be discussed.

International audience; The future SPIRAL-2 facility is mainly composed of a high-power superconducting driver LINAC, delivering a high-intensity deuteron, proton and heavy ions beams. The first two beams are particularly well suited to the construction of a neutron beam and irradiation facility called Neutrons for Science (NFS). Thick C and Be target-converters with incident deuteron beam will produce an intense white neutron spectrum, while thin 7Li target and incident proton beam allows generating quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The 1–40MeV neutron energy range will be covered and characterized by very intense fluxes available. The primary ion beam characteristics (energy, time resolution, intensity, etc.) are adequate to create a neutron time-of-flight facility. Irradiation stations for neutron, proton and deuteron induced reactions could also be built in order to perform cross-sections measurements by activation techniques. In this paper we will discuss the potential of this new installation to investigate numerous topics, both in fundamental and applied physics. In particular, cross section measurements could be performed for different purposes like nuclear data evaluation, fission and fusion technology, Accelerator Driven Systems, nuclear medicine, astrophysics, etc.

The γ-ray emission probability distribution of 234Pa* has been measured between 5.2 and 6.2 MeV excitation energy using the transfer reaction 232Th(3He, p)234Pa* at an incident 3He energy of 24 MeV. The experimental set-up is made of four liquid scintillator C6D6 detectors and four Si telescopes arranged to detect γ rays and charged particles in coincidence. In order to determine the total number of γ-ray cascades in a given nucleus, the raw experimental detected gamma-ray events have to be corrected by the weighting function technique. This weighting requires complete knowledge of the efficiency and response functions for the C6D6 detector set-up and surroundings. These have been determined experimentally using gamma-ray sources, inelastic scattering reactions and transfer reactions on light nuclei. Simulations which reproduce successfully the detector response and efficiency are presented. From these measurements, the (n, γ) capture cross section of 233Pa, in the neutron energy range 0 to 1 MeV, has been deduced via the product of the measured γ emission probability of 234Pa* with the calculated compound nucleus formation cross section of the reaction 233Pa + n. A comparison between existing data bases or recent predictions and the present results is also made.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Wastewater and household waste management are among the most significant issues for sustainable districts. Their management requires quantifying spatial relationships between the appreciation spaces rate and well-being. This research aims to quantify the effect of development and management deficits on the sustainability of social housing districts. The case study is the neighbourhood unit in the new Ali Mendjli Constantine, Algeria, characterized by high urban concentration. The critical points marking the latter relate to health and well-being problems. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative survey based on J.P. Thibaud’s commented course approach. It involves the surveyed population selection who create the course according to the issue asked. The results show that more than 50% of the neighbourhood’s spatial configuration directly affects the appropriation feeling, with a high dissatisfaction rate of approximately 85%. Furthermore, the interviewees declared that intermediate spaces within their neighbourhoods are spread over large areas without delimitation and specific development and management, making space assumption difficult. Thus, these spaces become sources of conflict and tension.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Accurate actinides fission cross sections around 1 MeV are of primary importance for the safety of generation IV reactors. To have accurate measurements, the neutron flux must also be accurately estimated. This is usually done with respect to the 235U(n,f) cross section. It is however possible to measure the neutron flux with respect to the 1H(n,n)p cross section which is a primary standard, providing an independent and precise measurement. Typically, the usual proton recoil technique uses a silicon detector for neutrons of energy between 1 and 70 MeV. However, the high electron and gamma background due to neutron production under irradiation makes the use of this or any other detector not suitable for an accurate measurement below 1 MeV. To this end, the Gaseous Proton Recoil Telescope is developed and characterized. The goal is to provide quasi-absolute neutron flux measurements with an accuracy better than 3%. It consists of a double ionization chamber with a Micromegas segmented detection plane and the gaseous pressure can be adjusted to protons – and hence neutron – energy. The sensitivity to gamma and electrons background, the intrinsic efficiency as well as the resolution of this detector have been investigated.

In the framework of studies concerning new fuel cycles and nuclear wastes incineration experimental data of the γα ratio between capture and fission cross sections of 233U reactions play an important role in the Th/U cycle. The safety evaluation and the detailed performance assessment for the generation IV nuclear-energy system based on 232Th cycle strongly depend on this ratio. Since the current data are scarce and sometimes contradictory, new experimental studies are required. The measurement will take place at the neutron time-of-flight facility GELINA at Geel, designed to perform neutron cross section measurements with high incident neutron-energy resolution. A dedicated high efficiency fission ionization chamber (IC) as fission fragment detector and six C6D6 liquid scintilators sensitive to -rays and neutrons will be used. The method, based on the IC energy response study, allowing to distinguish between gammas originating from fission and capture, in the resonance region, will be presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 'Neutrons for Science' (NFS) facility will be a component of SPIRAL-2, the future accelerator dedicated to the production of very intense radioactive ion beams, under construction at GANIL in Caen (France). NFS will be composed of a pulsed neutron beam for in-flight measurements and irradiation stations for cross-section measurements and material studies. Continuous and quasi-monokinetic energy spectra will be available at NFS respectively produced by the interaction of deuteron beam on thick a Be converter and by the 7Li(p,n) reaction on a thin converter. The flux at NFS will be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities in the 1 MeV to 40 MeV range. NFS will be a very powerful tool for physics and fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. - Abstract
Recent data from the EUROGAM array have revealed dipole transitions linking signature partner superdeformed bands in 194Tl and 195Tl nuclei. Measurements of the decay branching ratios, taken together with the average quadrupole moment of the neighboring superdeformed nuclei, enable the absolute M1 strengths to be determined. From these data and using the strong coupling model, we find that two SD bands in 195Tl are due to the 81st proton being in the [642]5/2+ orbital and four from the six SD bands in 194Tl correspond to a configuration where the intrinsic spins of the single proton and single neutron are aligned.

- Abstract
Dipole transitions linking the superdeformed Yrast signature-partner bands in 195Tl have been observed using the EUROGAM 1 spectrometer. From the measurements of the photon decay branching ratios, taken together with the average quadrupole moment measured in neighbouring superdeformed nuclei, we find that the two signature partner superdeformed bands involve the excitation of the 81 st proton into the intruder orbital
