Macro variables frequently display time-varying distributions, driven by the dynamic and evolving characteristics of economic, social, and environmental factors that consistently reshape the fundamental patterns and relationships governing these variables. To better understand the distributional dynamics beyond the central tendency, this paper introduces a novel semi-parametric approach for constructing time-varying conditional distributions, relying on the recent advances in distributional regression. We present an efficient precision-based Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm that simultaneously estimates all model parameters while explicitly enforcing the monotonicity condition on the conditional distribution function. Our model is applied to construct the forecasting distribution of inflation for the U.S., conditional on a set of macroeconomic and financial indicators. The risks of future inflation deviating excessively high or low from the desired range are carefully evaluated. Moreover, we provide a thorough discussion about the interplay between inflation and unemployment rates during the Global Financial Crisis, COVID, and the third quarter of 2023.

Although the MeV gamma-ray band is a promising energy-band window in astrophysics, the current situation of MeV gamma-ray astronomy significantly lags behind those of the other energy bands in angular resolution and sensitivity. An electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC), a next-generation MeV detector, is expected to revolutionize the situation. An ETCC tracks each Compton-recoil electron with a gaseous electron tracker and determines the incoming direction of each gamma-ray photon; thus, it has a strong background rejection power and yields a better angular resolution than classical Compton cameras. Here, we study ETCC events in which the Compton-recoil electrons do not deposit all energies to the electron tracker but escape and hit the surrounding pixel scintillator array (PSA). We developed an analysis method for this untapped class of events and applied it to laboratory and simulation data. We found that the energy spectrum obtained from the simulation agreed with that of the actual data within a factor of 1.2. We then evaluated the detector performance using the simulation data. The angular resolution for the new-class events was found to be twice as good as in the previous study at the energy range 1.0--2.0~MeV, where both analyses overlap. We also found that the total effective area is dominated by the contribution of the double-hit events above an energy of 1.5~MeV. Notably, applying this new method extends the sensitive energy range with the ETCC from 0.2--2.1 MeV in the previous studies to up to 3.5~MeV. Adjusting the PSA dynamic range should improve the sensitivity in even higher energy gamma-rays. Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated a number of human-like abilities, however the empathic understanding and emotional state of LLMs is yet to be aligned to that of humans. In this work, we investigate how the emotional state of generative LLM agents evolves as they perceive new events, introducing a novel architecture in which new experiences are compared to past memories. Through this comparison, the agent gains the ability to understand new experiences in context, which according to the appraisal theory of emotion is vital in emotion creation. First, the agent perceives new experiences as time series text data. After perceiving each new input, the agent generates a summary of past relevant memories, referred to as the norm, and compares the new experience to this norm. Through this comparison we can analyse how the agent reacts to the new experience in context. The PANAS, a test of affect, is administered to the agent, capturing the emotional state of the agent after the perception of the new event. Finally, the new experience is then added to the agents memory to be used in the creation of future norms. By creating multiple experiences in natural language from emotionally charged situations, we test the proposed architecture on a wide range of scenarios. The mixed results suggests that introducing context can occasionally improve the emotional alignment of the agent, but further study and comparison with human evaluators is necessary. We introduce a class of complex surface singularities - the blow-$ADE$ singularities - which are likely to be stable with respect to $\mu^*$-constant deformations. We prove such a stability property in several special cases. Here, we emphasize that we are not just considering deformation families for small values of the deformation parameter but families connecting any two elements in the $\mu^*$-constant stratum.

Motivated by recent progress of structural optimization problems, the paper presents a new method for constructing the distance function to the boundary of given sets of interest, which simplifies the optimization procedure. We extend the celebrated Varadhan's elliptic equation theory in 1967 by adding the source term to the equation, in which we encode the information about the set. We will also establish the rate of convergence in this new framework, which is sharp at least in the one-dimensional case.

While generative AI is now widespread and useful in society, there are potential risks of misuse, e.g., unconsciously influencing cognitive processes or decision-making. Although this causes a security problem in the cognitive domain, there has been no research about neural and computational mechanisms counteracting the impact of malicious generative AI in humans. We propose DecNefGAN, a novel framework that combines a generative adversarial system and a neural reinforcement model. More specifically, DecNefGAN bridges human and generative AI in a closed-loop system, with the AI creating stimuli that induce specific mental states, thus exerting external control over neural activity. The objective of the human is the opposite, to compete and reach an orthogonal mental state. This framework can contribute to elucidating how the human brain responds to and counteracts the potential influence of generative AI.

Uranus and Neptune have intrinsic magnetic fields generated via convection in a molten H2O layer, where the field strength is determined by its electrical conductivity (EC) along with convection size and velocity. Previous shock experiments reported that the EC of molten H2O is high enough to generate magnetic fields of these ice giant planets with adiabatic thermal structures. Here we measured the EC of ionic H2O fluid for the first time by static compression experiments up to 45 GPa and 2,750 K. The EC determined is lower by a few orders of magnitude than earlier data by shock compression measurements and not capable of generating a magnetic field with the conventional interior thermal structures. Our results necessitate recently-suggested fewfold hotter interiors of Uranus and Neptune to explain their magnetic fields.

We investigate the structure of ground-state heavy mesons within the light-front quark model, utilizing wave functions derived from the Single Gaussian Ansatz (SGA) and the Gaussian Expansion Method (GEM). By performing a $\chi^2$ fit to static properties such as mass spectra and decay constants, we determine the model parameters for each approach. We then compare the impacts of both methods on the light-front wave functions and structural observables. Our analysis reveals significant differences in the distribution amplitudes (DAs) $\phi_{2;M}(x)$ near the endpoints, with GEM showing enhanced amplitudes and correct asymptotic behavior $\phi_{2;M}(x \to 1) \propto (1-x)$, consistent with perturbative QCD. This endpoint behavior is linked to the short-range (high-momentum) wave function governed by color Coulomb interaction and relativistic kinematics. GEM accurately reproduces a power-law damping $\psi_0(k \to \infty) \propto 1/k_\perp^2$, aligning with perturbative QCD predictions. Furthermore, the electromagnetic form factors of pseudoscalar mesons in the low-$Q^2$ region fall off faster with GEM than with SGA. Overall, while both methods adequately describe static properties, GEM provides a more accurate description of structural properties, being more sensitive to details and asymptotic behaviors., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, and 6 tables. Here, we study the motion of axisymmetric hypersurfaces $\{\Gamma_t\}_{t\ge0}$ evolved by forced mean curvature flows in the periodic setting. We establish conditions that quenching occurs or does not occur in terms of the initial data and forcing term. Perovskites with Bi or Pb on the A-site host a number of interesting and yet to be understood phenomena such as negative thermal expansion in BiNiO$_3$. We employ hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of Ni 2$p$ core-level as well as valence band to probe the electronic structure of BiNiO$_3$ and PbNiO$_3$. The experimental results supported by theoretical calculations using dynamical mean-field theory reveal essentially identical electronic structure of the Ni-O subsystem typical of Ni$^{2+}$ charge-transfer insulators. The two materials are distinguished by filling of the Bi(Pb)-O antibonding states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is responsible for the Bi disproportionation in BiNiO$_3$ at ambient pressure and absence of similar behavior in PbNiO$_3$. The present experiments provide evidence for this conclusion by revealing the presence/absence of Bi/Pb $6s$ states at the top of the valence band in the two materials.

We determined the complex dielectric functions of $\varepsilon$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ using optical transmittance and reflectance spectroscopies at temperatures from 10 K to room temperature. The measured dielectric-function spectra reveal distinct structures at a bandgap energy. We fitted a model dielectric function based on the electronic energy-band structure to these experimental data. We analyzed the temperature dependence of the band-gap with a model based on phonon dispersion effects. One could explain it in terms of phonon-related parameters such as the optical phonon temperature. We investigate the thermal expansion and superconducting properties of a CuAl2-type (tetragonal) superconductor CoZr2 under high pressures. We perform high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a pressure range of 2.9 GPa < P < 10.4 GPa and discover that CoZr2 exhibits volumetric negative thermal expansion under high pressures. Although the uniaxial positive thermal expansion (PTE) along the a-axis is observed under ambient pressure, that is suppressed by pressure, while the large uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis is maintained under the pressure regime. As a result of a combination of the suppressed uniaxial PTE along the a-axis and uniaxial NTE along the c-axis, volumetric negative thermal expansion is achieved under high pressure in CoZr2. The mechanisms of volumetric NTE would be based on the flexible crystal structure caused by the soft Co-Co bond as seen in the iso-structural compound FeZr2, which exhibits uniaxial NTE along the c-axis. We also perform high-pressure electrical resistance measurements of CoZr2 to confirm the presence of superconductivity under the examined pressure regime in the range of 0.03 GPa < P < 41.9 GPa. We confirm the presence of superconductivity under all pressures and observe dome-like shape pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature. Because of the coexistence of two phenomena, which are volumetric NTE and superconductivity, in CoZr2 under high pressure, the coexistence would be achievable under ambient pressure by tuning chemical compositions after our present observation., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, supporting information

We have observed a new optical transition in the photoreflectance spectra of indirect-gap BiOCl thin films, which were grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. The position of this transition is close in energy to its bulk critical point energy. Moreover, these are significantly lower than a higher-lying direct-type critical point from an energetic point of view. The spectral line shape analysis for our observed signal suggests the presence of an excitonic effect of this compound. We determined its dependence of the optical anomaly on temperature ranging from 80 K to room temperature. We adopted the Varshni model for this analysis. Aims. LST-1, the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope for the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, is concluding its commissioning in Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. The proximity of LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope 1) to the two MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes permits observations of the same gamma-ray events with both systems. Methods. We describe the joint LST-1+MAGIC analysis pipeline and use simultaneous Crab Nebula observations and Monte Carlo simulations to assess the performance of the three-telescope system. The addition of the LST-1 telescope allows the recovery of events in which one of the MAGIC images is too dim to survive analysis quality cuts. Results. Thanks to the resulting increase in the collection area and stronger background rejection, we find a significant improvement in sensitivity, allowing the detection of 30% weaker fluxes in the energy range between 200 GeV and 3 TeV. The spectrum of the Crab Nebula, reconstructed in the energy range ~60 GeV to ~10 TeV, is in agreement with previous measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Chirality of massless fermions emergent in condensed matter is a key to understand their characteristic behavior as well as to exploit their functionality. However, chiral nature of massless fermions in Dirac semimetals has remained elusive, due to equivalent occupation of carriers with the opposite chirality in thermal equilibrium. Here, we show that the isospin degree of freedom, which labels the chirality of massless carriers from a crystallographic point of view, can be injected by circularly polarized light. Terahertz Faraday rotation spectroscopy successfully detects the anomalous Hall conductivity by a light-induced isospin polarization in a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, Cd$_3$As$_2$. Spectral analysis of the Hall conductivity reveals a long scattering time and a long decay time, which are characteristic of the isospin. The long-lived, robust, and reversible character of the isospin promises potential application of Dirac semimetals in future information technology., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures. Immediate feedback has been shown to improve student learning. In programming courses, immediate, automated feedback is typically provided in the form of pre-defined test cases run by a submission platform. While these are excellent for highlighting the presence of logical errors, they do not provide novice programmers enough scaffolding to help them identify where an error is or how to fix it. To address this, several tools have been developed that provide richer feedback in the form of program repairs. Studies of such tools, however, tend to focus more on whether correct repairs can be generated, rather than how novices are using them. In this paper, we describe our experience of using CLARA, an automated repair tool, to provide feedback to novices. First, we extended CLARA to support a larger subset of the Python language, before integrating it with the Jupyter Notebooks used for our programming exercises. Second, we devised a preliminary study in which students tackled programming problems with and without support of the tool using the 'think aloud' protocol. We found that novices often struggled to understand the proposed repairs, echoing the well-known challenge to understand compiler/interpreter messages.
