Straipsnyje aptariami blogos akies komplekso ypatumai moderniajame lietuviškame kontekste. Siekiama nustatyti, kada, iš ko, kaip ir kokia apimtimi jį perima jaunoji karta. Aštuonerius metus atliekant lauko tyrimus Lietuvos kaimuose, miesteliuose ir sostinėje Vilniuje teko įsitikinti, kad kenkiamosios akių galios, t. y. nužiūrėjimo, bijo toli gražu ne vien mažai išsilavinę ir prietaringi kaimo senukai, bet ir jauni, išsimokslinę miesto žmonės. Nepasitaikė nė vieno atvejo, kad apklaustieji būtų nieko nežinoję apie blogą akį. Lietuvos kaimų ir miestelių jaunimas, atvykęs mokytis į miestą, tėvų ir senelių papročių neužmiršta. Iš kartos į kartą perdavinėjamas blogos akies kompleksas išlieka beveik nepakitęs. Jaunimas perima šį prietarą iš vyresniosios kartos ne kaip įdomią, gal net komišką praeities keistybę ar vadinamąjį reliktą, o kaip įprastinį kasdienybės reiškinį, neatsiejamą tikrovės ir pasaulėvaizdžio dalį. Amžius, išsilavinimas ir profesija tiesioginės įtakos blogos akies kompleksui neturi. […] The subject of the present paper is characteristics of the evil eye complex revealed within the modern Lithuanian context. The aim of the paper is to determine how young educated people take over, practice and develop the evil eye complex. Field research carried out for this paper covers the period from 2005 to 2007. It involves 20 respondents, all of whom are students or graduates of Lithuanian universities. The respondents were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire created by the author. Composition of the respondents (a) by gender: 19 females and 1 male; (b) by age at the moment of the interview: 19–28 years (mean age 22.1 years); (c) by study direction: exact sciences (3 respondents), humanities (8 respondents), natural sciences (2 respondents), and social sciences (7 respondents); (d) by place of origin: 7 respondents come from Vilnius, the rest 13 from other Lithuanian towns or villages located in the districts of Alytus, Švenčionėliai, Šalčininkai, Molėtai, Utena, Zarasai, Mažeikiai, Vilnius, and Trakai. The so-called "kinship and friendship networks" – based on "snowball" methodology was employed for the selection of respondents. Results of the research: out of the total number (twenty) of respondents, sixteen stated that casters of the evil eye really existed, and that they had encountered them personally. Two respondents thought that casters of the evil eye did not exist. The rest two were not sure about it. Six respondents answered yes to the question: Has a caster of the evil eye ever harmed you? Another six said no, and the rest four were not sure about it. Fourteen respondents answered yes to the question: At the present moment, do you know at least one caster of the evil eye personally? Two respondents believed that their own eyes possessed the power to cause harm to the environment. According to the respondents, the evil eye may cause harm to a number of objects, such as human health and beauty, flowers, orchards, and domestic animals. What is more, the evil eye is also harmful to inanimate objects, such as mobile telephones or houses. The evil eye accounts for a series of misfortunes in human life, including traumas or even death. To ward off the evil eye, the respondents use a wide range of traditional and the so-called "modern" means, such as imported Turkish beads. Some of them develop their original warding-off practices. Limitations: although the findings indicate that young educated participants take over the evil eye, the qualitative character of this research does not allow concluding that almost 100 per cent of young educated Lithuanians are afraid of the evil eye. Besides, the research involved basically females. In order to make any plausible conclusions it is essential to find out how young educated males take over, practice and develop the evil eye. Conclusions: the greater part of young educated participants of the research views the evil eye as a common everyday phenomenon. Evil eye complex is taken over by these representatives of younger generation not as an antique curiosity but as an integral part of reality. Age, education or profession does not produce a direct effect on the evil eye complex. However, it is vital to determine how young educated males contribute to the construction and development of the evil eye complex.

Straipsnyje į Lietuvos kartografiją žvelgiama iš archeologijos perspektyvos: analizuojamos kartografams skirtos instrukcijos ir apžvelgiami jų darbo rezultatai - įvairūs Lietuvos teritorijos žemėlapių (XVII a. vidurys-XX a.) komplektai. Straipsnio pagrindas -1891-1907 m. topografinis vakarinių Rusijos imperijos gubernijų žemėlapis M 1:21 000, kuriame kartografuotus Rytų ir Pietų Lietuvos pilkapius straipsnio autoriai analizavo GIS aplinkoje ir žvalgė 2008 m. ekspedicijos metu. Per trejus metus autorių sukaupta patirtis leidžia formuluoti bendro pobūdžio metodologines prielaidas, formuoti žemėlapių archeologijos tyrimų kryptį. The article speaks broadly for the first time about Lithuanian cartography from the perspective of archaeology: it surveys maps prepared during the late 17th-20th centuries, analyses the instructions for cartographers, and presents the results of an analysis of the archaeological information found in the 1891-1907 topographic map using GIS tools and its verification during field surveys. The first triangulation network in Lithuania was created in 1795-1803 in the Prussian controlled Trans-Neman region (Lith. Užnemunė, Southwest Lithuania). Thus the first accurate topographic maps (1:33 000 scale) of this territory appeared at that time. The triangulation network of Vilnius Province in the Russian Empire was created during 1816-1821 and a 1:21 000 scale topographic photograph of the province was made using a plane table. Unfortunately, just one map sheet of the city of Vilnius was printed on this basis. An instrumental photograph of Lithuania's territory was made during 1881-1907 and two sets of topographic maps (1:21 000 and 1:42 000 scale) were prepared on its basis. In analysing this map (1:21 000 scale) for the first time from an archaeological perspective, it was noted that seven barrows that have now been completely or partially destroyed (Fig. 7) were marked by a barrow symbol (курган) at the site of the Turlojiškės barrow cemetery (Širvintos District). In this way the idea arose to study the map more carefully and to survey in the field those map locations marked with barrows, i.e. potential archaeological sites. In 2008, in examining a German topographic map (1:25 000 scale), which was an accurate copy of the aforementioned Russian map (1:21 000 scale), an analysis of the map's contents was made using GIS tools. Of the 517 map sheets encompassing Lithuanian territory that were available during the project, 210 (Alytus, Kaunas, and Vilnius Counties) were checked. Keeping in mind the range of the East Lithuanian barrow culture (3rd - 7th centuries), this was the region, where the greatest possibility of finding unknown barrows existed. 10 localities were recorded, where the topographers used a single barrow symbol, 13 where they used two or more (Fig. 9). The topographic map analysis and the field verification of its results (For more about the course of the field survey, see Vaitkevičius, Žikulinas, 2009) presuppose several conclusions: first, Some of the presumed archaeological sites (barrows) that were mapped have already by now been physically destroyed; second, the relief in some of the surveyed localities has been changed beyond recognition through the forces of nature or human activity. It is still possible to determine the archaeological value of such sites through a field evaluation (Fig. 10a); third, some of the barrows on the maps are sand dune formations; fourth, not just earth and sand mounds, but also rock cairns characteristic of Jatvingian burial sites were marked with a barrow symbol in Šalčininkai District in South Lithuania; and fifth, some of the barrows shown on the maps are archaeologically valuable. The topographic position and mound form (Fig. 10b) characteristic of barrows do not allow one to doubt this. Some archaeological finds testify to the location of the destroyed barrows (Fig. 10c). In all, the analysis of the map's diverse archaeological information and the subsequent field verification yielded positive results in nine instances.

Tyrimo objektas – trijų Lietuvos lenkakalbių-baltarusakalbių dainininkų ir trylikos dainininkų iš gretimų regionų (baltų-slavų paribio) dainų įrašai. Darbo tikslas – Vilniaus krašto (Vilniaus, Trakų ir Šalčininkų rajonų) ir gretimų regionų (baltų-slavų paribio) dainininkų atlikimo manieros nagrinėjimas bei lyginimas. Tyrimo uždaviniai: kompiuterinės akustinės analizės bei miesto folkloro ansamblių dalyvių apklausos metodais palyginti Vilniaus krašto ir gretimų baltų-slavų paribio regionų dainininkų balsių artikuliaciją ir tembrą The article examines the singing manner of three singers from the Vilnius region and compares some of its features with the performance of the thirteen singers from a neighbouring Baltic-Slavic area. The main objective was to research the singing tradition of tuteiši (an ethnic group of the Lithuanian Slavs) from the Vilnius region and to place it within the context of regional traditions, i. e. to find out whether their performance manner is absolutely unique, or similar to other ethnographic regions. The author used acoustic computer analysis and conducted a social opinion poll among city folklore performers to compare the timbre and vocal articulation of the singers from the Vilnius region and from the Baltic-Slavic borderland. In short, this article presents the research data on singers' intonation, ornamentation, vibrato, tempo, dynamics and singing pitch. The Vilnius region singers' timbres share some common features: the voices are quite strong, volatile, with a tendency for open and circular sounds. Their singing is soft-mannered, but the voices are quite gutsy and medium-pitched. The singing manner has many unique features, but also there are quite a few regional similarities. The area of open singing and variously pronounced vocals stretches in south eastern and, partly, eastern Dzūkija, i. e. in the Lithuanian-Belorussian-Polish borderland. One may argue that the singing manner in the Vilnius region is close to the borderland tradition of the Aukštaičiai-Dzūkai. This is definitely the Lithuanian influence on the singers born in the region

Šiame straipsnyje analizuojamos paribio kraštuose susiformavusių ritualinių apeigų kalbinės ypatybės. Pasitelkiamas etnolingvistinis metodas, kuris remiasi sistemine ritualinių apeigų struktūros ir žodyno analize. Tyrimo objektu pasirinktas nedidelis dvasinės kultūros fragmentas – žiemos laikotarpio ritualinės apeigos. Darbe tyrinėta ritualinėse apeigose vartojama terminija buvo suskirstyta į keletą leksinių-semantinių pogrupių, kurių analizė atskleidė kalbinę struktūrą. Tyrimas atliktas netoli Vilniaus (Vilniaus apskrityje, iš dalies Širvintuose ir Molėtuose), taip pat šalia Baltarusijos esančiuose regionuose (Šalčininkuose ir Švenčionyse). Pasiekti rezultatai buvo palyginti su atitinkamais Lenkijoje, Lietuvoje ir Baltarusijoje atliktais tyrinėjimais. Šio darbo rezultatai rodo, kad ritualinių apeigų susiformavimą paribio kraštuose veikė įvairios kultūrinės įtakos. Sąveikavo įvairūs kultūriniai sluoksniai; paribio teritorijose teritorijoje gyvenusių bendruomenių kultūrinėje terpėje susipynė skirtingų laikotarpių elementai. Panašiai, kaip kalbos stratifikacijoje, ritualinėse apeigose koegzistavo skirtingi sluoksniai: lietuviškojo substrato elementai, senosios baltarusių kultūros elementai ir naujos jų modifikacijos, krikščioniškos ir sekuliarios lenkų kultūros tradicijos. Terminija taip pat yra daugiasluoksnė ir daugiakultūrė; joje susipina archajiniai lietuvių ir baltarusių kalbiniai sluoksniai, lenkų ir rusų kalbų elementai. The present article analyses the features of a language occurring in the border. The results were achieved by using the ethno-linguistic method, which is based on the systematic analysis of the ritual structure and vocabulary. The object of the analysis was a little fragment of the spiritual culture - the winter period of the ritual year. The structure of the ritual was established according to the methodology as well as the terminology of rituals, which includes several lexical-semantic microfields, was analyzed. The research was carried out nearby Vilnius (region of Vilnius, partly Širvintai and Molėtai) and also in the regions close to Byelorussia (Šalčininkai and Švenčionys). The results achieved were compared to the appropriate Polish, Lithuanian and Byelorussian data. The findings show that the influence of various cultures is obvious in the formation of the rituals near to the border. These cultures as if layers affect each other and are originated from the different periods of the existence of a cultural community in the given territory. Similarly to the stratification of languages, the particular elements of the ritual system co-exist: the Lithuanian substratum rituals, Byelorussian old and new rituals, as well as Polish church and secular traditions are well preserved.

Mokslinis straipsnis yra skirtas specifiniams tautinio tapatumo „įdokumentinimo“ aspektams (konkrečiai – pase įrašytai asmens tapatybei) nagrinėti. Straipsnio objektas – Lietuvos lenkų bendruomenės etninio / nacionalinio tapatumo klausimai, atitinkamą Lietuvos lenkų tautinį tapatumą formuojančių veiksnių analizė. Straipsnis paremtas 2005 m. pietryčių Lietuvoje (Šalčininkuose) autoriaus atliktų lauko tyrimo duomenų rezultatais. Moksliniame darbe formuluojama prielaida, kad įvairios valstybės institucijos daro didelę įtaką tiek individualiam, tiek grupiniam visų žmonių, tarp jų ir Lietuvos lenkų, tautiniam tapatumui formuoti ir palaikyti. Ši įtaka, teigiama, išlieka netgi tada, kai pačios konkrečios institucijos tiesiogiai nebeveikia. Pase įrašyta („įdokumentinta“) tapatybė suprantama kaip labai svarbus ir praktiškai nekintamas bei paveldimas tautinės tapatybės žymuo. Drauge straipsnyje formuluojama išvada, kad tautybės įrašas pase veikia kaip labai svarbus, tačiau toli gražu ne vienintelis suvoktos individualios bei kolektyvinės tautinės tapatybės veiksnys. Įtakos savos bei kolektyvinės tautybės suvokimui turi ir kiti objektyvūs ar subjektyvūs kriterijai (specifinė teritorija, istorija, kalba, genealogija bei kiti konkrečiam tautiniam tapatumui svarbūs faktoriai). Tapatumo įdokumentinimas Lietuvos lenkų bendruomenėje funkcionuoja kaip dalis lokalios genealogijos interpretacijos, susiejančios biologinio ir kultūrinio paveldimumo idėjas. The scientific paper is aimed at exploring the specific aspects of national identity documentation (specifically – indicating identity in the passport). The object of the paper is the issues of ethnic/national identity of the Lithuanian Polish community, an analysis of factors forming a respective national identity of Lithuanian Poles. The paper is based on the findings of fieldwork carried out by the author in South-Eastern Lithuania (Šalčininkai) in 2005. The paper formulates an assumption that various public authorities have a great influence on the formation and support of both individual and group national identity of all people, including Lithuanian Poles. The author states that this influence remains even when the specific institutions do not exert a direct impact. The identity indicated (documented) in the passport is perceived as a very important and practically unchangeable and inherited indication of national identity. The author formulates a conclusion that the indication of nationality in the passport is a very significant yet not the only factor of perceived individual and collective national identity. Other objective and subjective criteria (specific territory, history, language, genealogy and other factors significant for a concrete national identity) affect the perception of individual and collective nationality. Documentation of identity in the Lithuanian Polish community functions as part of a local genealogy interpretation, which relates the ideas of biological and cultural heritage.

Atkūrus Lietuvos nepriklausomybę, lietuvių kalbai suteiktas valstybinis statusas, ji tapo privaloma visose gyvenimo srityse. Vis daugiau tautinių mažumų ar mišrių šeimų vaikų mokosi mokyklose, kuriose mokoma valstybine kalba. Tokį pasirinkimą lemia keletas priežasčių, kurių išaiškinimas ir yra šio straipsnio tikslas. Pietryčių Lietuvos tautinių mažumų mokymosi valstybine kalba motyvacijai nustatyti pasirinkta įvairiatautė Vilniaus apskrities dalis - Vilniaus miestas ir Vilniaus, Šalčininkų bei Švenčionių rajonai. Tyrimų metu gauti duomenys dėl noro mokytis valstybine kalba lyginami su etnologų tyrimų duomenimis. Pastarieji atlikti Seinų-Punsko krašte (Lenkija), kur gyvena ir mokosi lietuvių tautinė mažuma. Duomenys taip pat lyginami su Baltarusijoje veikiančių mokyklų ar klasių lietuvių kalba mokymosi kalbos pasirinkimo tendencijomis. After restoration of Lithuanian self-dependence, the Lithuanian language recovered its the status of official national language and became compulsory in all spheres of life. An increasing number of children from mixed families and families of national minorities go to schools with Lithuanian as an instruction language. The present article is devoted to analysis of the motifs of this kind of choice. The motivation of attending schools with Lithuanian as an instruction language was analysed in a multinational part of Vilnius County: Vilnius city and Vilnius, Šalčininkai and Švenčionys districts. The data on the motivation to learn in Lithuanian obtained during the survey were compared with the data obtained by ethnologists who surveyed the Lithuanian minority of Seinai-Punskas (Poland) region. The data were also compared with the trends of choosing a instruction language emerging at the Lithuanian schools of Belarus.

Straipsnyje pateikiami nauji etnologinių ir kalbinių tyrimų duomenys apie Lietuvos ir Lenkijos paribio regiono gyventojų kalbos ypatumus. Tyrimai rengti taikant etnolingvistinį metodą, pagristą sistemine apeigos struktūros ir žodyno analize. Tyrimo objektas -- žiemos ciklo kalendorinių apeigų šventės. Šių apeigų struktūra yra apibrėžiama jos terminijos visuminiais aspektais, kurių sudėtyje nustatomi ir aptariami leksiniai-semantiniai vietinės šnektos elementai. Kalbinė medžiaga minėtų kalendorinių apeigų metu buvo renkama Vilnijos krašte (Vilniaus, Širvintų, Molėtų rajonuose) bei pabaltarusio regione (Šalčininkų ir Švenčionių apylinkėse). Gauti tyrimų rezultatai buvo palyginti su atitinkamais lenkų, lietuvių ir baltarusių duomenimis. Nustatyta, kad įvairių kultūrų įtaka tradicijų formavimuisi aptariamajame paribio regione yra akivaizdi. Šios kultūros veikė vieną kitą įvairiais kultūrinės bendruomenės egzistavimo etapais. Kaip ir kalbų stratifikacija, tam tikri ritualinės sistemos elementai gyvuoja kartu: lietuviškojo substrato ritualai, baltarusių senieji ir naujieji ritualai, taip pat lenkų bažnytinės ir pasaulietinės tradicijos yra gerai išlaikytos. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama ekologinio ūkininkavimo plėtra ir perspektyvos Lietuvoje. Pirmas ekologinės gamybos ūkis įsisteigė 1992 m. Nuo 1992 iki 2005 metų ekologinis ūkininkavimas Lietuvoje labai išsiplėtė. Ūkių skaičius padidėjo iki 1811, kur buvo ūkininkaujama 69 430 ha plote, tai yra maždaug 2,70 proc. deklaruotų tiesioginėms išmokoms gauti žemės ūkio naudmenų ploto. Lietuvoje ekologinis ūkininkavimas yra viena iš prioritetinių žemės ūkio šakų. The extent of ecological agricultural industry in Lithuania has been constantly growing- in average 60 per cent each year. In 1997 106 farms of ecological industry have been certified. In 2004 this number grew to 1,178 farms, in 2005 it was 1,811 farms. In 2005 the area in which the certified ecological farms were operating was 69 430 ha which is approximately 2.7 per cent of agriculturally used area declared for reception of direct payment. Compared to 2004, the area of certified farms increased in 26 475 ha. An average industrial farm consists of 38 ha. Most certified farms are situated in the regions of Biržai (114 farms), Trakai (111 farms), Šalčininkai (92 farms), Ukmergė (91 farms) and Molėtai (83 farms). In the regions where ecological agricultural activity was not popular, the number of ecological farms has grown too. In 2004 in Jurbarkas region only 3 ecological farms were certified whilst in 2005 the number arrived at 24. In Kėdainiai region in 2004 there were 4 certified ecological farms and there were 22 of them in 2005. In Skuodas region in 2004 there were 2 certified ecological farms and in 2005 there were 12 of them. The greatest areas of certified ecological farming are found in the regions of Biržai (4 958 ha), Švenčioniai (4 254 ha), Šalčininkai (4 232 ha), Ukmergė (3 985 ha), Varėna (3 663 ha). Areas of certified ecological farms have been increasing significantly in the regions of Kėdainiai and Jurbarkas. In 2004 in the region of Kėdainiai 45 ha were certified, whist in 2005 they increased to 1 362 ha. In 2004 in the region of Jurbarkas 74 ha were certified and in 2005 there were 829 ha. With the increasing extent of ecological production, the structure of crop is changing. In 2002-2003 in the crop structure of ecological farms greens prevailed (37-49 proc), while in 2004-2005 in the crop structure grain and leguminous crops began dominating. They formed 48 per cent of total crop in 2004 and even 60 per cent in 2005. Such crop structure does not totally conform to the regulations of ecological farming and it should change. The changes in crop structure in ecological farms has been summoned by EU payments for ecological farming. In Lithuania ecological farming is one of the priority branches of agriculture.

Vilnijos krašte daug liaudies dainų dainuojama lenkiškai. Pastaruoju metu Lietuvoje užrašytų lenkų liaudies dainų tekstų bei melodijų yra paskelbta tiek Lietuvoje, tiek Lenkijoje. Kyla klausimas: kaip pietryčių Lietuvoje paplito lenkiškai dainuojamos liaudies dainos? Ar jos yra žinomos ir kai kuriuose Lenkijos etnografiniuose regionuose? O gal tai tik lenkiškieji lietuvių liaudies dainų tekstų vertiniai? Kiek įtakos šiam folklorui turi giminingas baltarusių kalbos bei tautosakos substratas? Vienareikšmių atsakymų tikėtis neverta. Kiekvienas konkretus lenkiškai Lietuvoje dainuojamos liaudies dainos poetinio teksto ar melodijos tipas turi savo kilmės bei raidos istoriją. Ją susekti galima lyginamuoju metodu sugretinus tiek Lietuvoje, tiek Lenkijoje žinomus jų variantus. Publikacijoje pateikiami dar neskelbtų lenkų liaudies dainų, užrašytų Lietuvoje ir saugomų LLTI bei LMA tautosakos archyvuose, variantai. Skiriamasis jų bruožas – žinomi šių dainų teksto ar melodijos atitikmenys lietuvių liausies dainų užrašymuose. Geografinis pateikiamų užrašytų dainų paplitimas nėra įvairus. Tai visų pirma lenkakalbių Trakų rajono Aukštadvario apylinkių dainuojamoji tautosaka. Be to, dainos, užrašytos Kaišiadorių, Šalčininkų ir Širvintų rajonų apylinkėse. Lenkiškų dainų tekstų transkripcijos metodai įvairuoja. Jų tikslumas daugeliu atvejų yra problemiškas. Čia tekstai pateikiami taip, kaip jas užrašė jų šifruotojai. Melodijos – su visais jų transkribuotojų užfiksuotais variantais. The Polish folk songs, recorded in South-Eastern Lithuania (Dzūkija region) are published here. Twenty-eight samples of calendar songs, songs of labor, children rhymes, songs of youth and love, and family relations, also humorous folk songs, recorded in Polish language, represent traditional folklore of the local Polish national minority. All the Polish folk songs published here have parallels in Lithuanian folklore. Those parallels can be more or less clearly recognized in poetic texts or subjects, as well as in melodic structures of Lithuanian songs (from Dzūkija region) and local Polish folk songs. The problem raised here concerns the national origin of these folk songs. Are the presented Polish folk songs known in any local folklore traditions in Poland? Are they originally Polish at all, or do they represent just Polish translations of Lithuanian folk songs? What about related Byelorussian folklore influences here? The author of this publication promotes idea of exhaustive comparative studies of Polish, Byelorussian and Lithuanian folklore, as the only way to find true answers to these questions.

Vestuvinės dainos nėra pati gausiausia Lietuvos lenkų repertuaro dalis. Apeiginių archajinių dainų išliko nedaug, ir dabar dažniausiai begalima užrašyti tik jų fragmentus. Kur kas geriau yra išsaugota vestuvinė lyrika. Straipsnyje pateikiamos dainos buvo užrašytos 1997-2000 m. daugiausia Vilniaus krašte (Vilniaus, Trakų, Švenčionių, Molėtų, Šalčininkų raj.), nes Liaudoje, Kėdainių ir Kauno rajonuose gyvenantys lenkai, būdami šlėktų kilmės, vestuvinių apeigų dainų nedainuodavo. Vilniaus krašte gerokai turtingesnį dainų repertuarą galima užrašyti taip pat ten, kur gyvena valstiečių kilmės gyventojai. Šio žanro dainos atspindi kultūrinį kontekstą, kuriame folkloras formavosi dvikalbiuose ir trikalbiuose paribiuose (Vilniaus krašte, kur gyvena dviem ir trimis kalbomis kalbantys gyventojai, vestuvinės apeigos neretai būdavo atliekamos keliomis kalbomis pramaišiui). Nors dauguma vestuvinių apeiginių dainų, užrašytų lietuvių ir lenkų paribiuose, turi vietines šaknis, Lietuvos lenkų vestuvinių dainų repertuare galima rasti ir tokių dainų, kurios yra kilusios iš Lenkijos. Kai kurie dainų variantai su žinomu vainiko ridenimo per stalą motyvu arba daina, dainuojama pinant vainiką našlaitei, yra žinomi tiek Lietuvoje, Baltarusijoje, tiek ir Lenkijoje – tai byloja apie šių motyvų archajiškumą. Tam tikrais vestuvinių apeigų momentais dainos galėjo būti dainuojamos arba smuiku griežiama vien tik melodija. Wedding songs are not the most abundant part in the repertoire of Lithuanian Poles. A small number of ritual archaic songs have survived to date, and only fragments thereof might usually be recorded nowadays. Wedding lyrics has been preserved much better. The songs presented in the paper were recorded in 1997–2000 mainly in Vilnius region (Vilnius, Trakai, Švenčionys, Molėtai, Šalčininkai Districts), because the Poles of szlachta descent residing in Liauda, Kėdainiai and Kaunas Districts did not sing wedding songs. A richer song repertoire might be recorded in Vilnius region also in those areas where the persons of peasant descent reside. The songs of this genre reflect the cultural context, in which folklore formed in bilingual or trilingual periphery (a wedding ceremony was often conducted in a mix of several languages in those parts of Vilnius region that are inhabited by bilingual or trilingual people). Although the majority of wedding ritual songs recorded in the Lithuanian-Polish periphery are of local origin, the repertoire of wedding songs of Lithuanian Poles also contains songs of Polish origin. Some song variants with a familiar motif of rolling a wreath along the table or a song sung while wreathing for an orphan girl are known in Lithuania, Belarus and Poland; this testifies the archaic character of these motifs. At certain moments of the wedding ceremony songs were sung or only a melody was played with a violin.

Tyrimai atlikti 1993-2000 m. Lietuvos žemės ūkio universitete. Lietuva turi palankias sąlygas grūdų ūkio plėtrai, tačiau turėtų būti atsižvelgiama į tinkamiausius jų auginimo arealus. Juos suformavus, regionų gamtinės sąlygos leistų atpiginti grūdų gamybą, turėtų įtakos konkurencingumui rinkoje. Norint nustatyti perspektyvoje tinkamiausius žiemkenčių auginimo ir koncentravimo arealus, nagrinėtas jų auginimo arealų išsidėstymas bei derlingumas pagal rajonus. Tyrimu nustatyta, kad žieminių kviečių auginimui tinkamiausia beveik visa Vidurio zona, šiek tiek mažiau - Panevėžio rajonas. Perspektyvai siūlomas toks žieminių kviečių auginimo arealas, kurio vakarinė riba eitų per Mažeikių, Akmenės, Šiaulių, Kelmės, Raseinių, Jurbarko rajonus, rytinė - per Biržų, Kupiškio, Panevėžio, Jonavos, Kauno, Prienų, Alytaus ir Marijampolės rajonus. Patys tinkamiausi - Pasvalio, Pakruojo ir Šakių rajonai. Išaiškinta, kad kvietrugių auginimo ateityje arealai galėtų būti ne tik Vidurio zona, bet ir Vakarų zonos (pvz., Kretingos, Šilutės, Plungės, Šilalės, Tauragės, Raseinių) bei Rytų zonos (pvz., Kupiškio, Ukmergės, Širvintų, Vilniaus, Šalčininkų, Lazdijų, Kaišiadorių, Utenos) rajonai. Rugių auginimo arealai - Pietryčių Lietuvos pazonis ir Šilutės rajonas, kur vyrauja velėniniai jauriniai priesmėlio bei smėlio dirvožemiai. Nemažai rugių auginama ir kituose Rytų zonos rajonuose, tačiau besiribojančiuose su Vidurio zona jų dalis javų pasėlių struktūroje mažesnė. Daugiau rugių sėjama ir Vakarų zonoje. Ateičiai rugių auginimo arealai galėtų būti Pietryčių Lietuvos pazonis ir Šilutės rajonas. Rugių auginimui tinka ir kaimyniniai rajonai. Jų auginimo rajonas yra ir centrinė Žemaitija (Plungės, Telšių, Šilalės rajonai). The research was carried out during 1993-2000 at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture. There are favourable conditions for development of crop production in Lithuania, however, the suitability of areas for their production must be taken into consideration. After establishing those areas, natural conditions of the regions should allow reducing the price of crop production and influence the market competition. For establishing the area’s most suitable for growing and concentrating winter crops in perspective, the location of their growing areas and crops capacity among the regions in 1993-2000 were investigated. The cartogram of wheat crop area in 1993-2000, when it comprised about 25.5% of all crop area, reveals the region’s most suitable for winter crop growing. It is almost the whole Middle zone, however, the Panevėžys region is less suitable for this purpose. The averages of winter crop capacity in the regions in 1993-2000 were in resilient correlation with soil productivity scale - in all farms it’s depended on soil productivity by 73.9%. The average of winter crop capacity in all Lithuanian farms in 1993-2000 was 2.74 t/ha. The crop capacity was highest in the Šakiai, Joniškis and Pasvalys regions. After summarizing the research results, the following area for wheat crop growing were suggested: the west boundary of this area should cross the Mažeikiai, Akmenė, Šiauliai, Kelmė, Raseiniai and Jurbarkas regions, the east boundary should cross the Biržai, Kupiškis, Panevėžys, Jonava, Kaunas, Prienai, Alytus and Marijampolė regions. The most suitable are Pasvalys, Pakruojis and Šakiai regions. The areas for future growing of triticale may be used not only the Middle zone, but also the West zone, such as the Kretinga, Šilutė, Plunge, Šilalė, Tauragė and Raseiniai regions, and the East zone regions such as Kupiškis, Ukmergė, Širvintos, Vilnius, Šalčininkai, Lazdijai, Kaišiadorys and Utena. The areas for rye crop growing lye in the subzone of Southeast Lithuania and Šilutė region, where turf sand and sandy soils are predominant. The large part of rye crop is growing in other regions of the East zone, however, in regions near the Middle zone their part in the crop structure is smaller. More rye crops are sowed in the West zone. The average capacity of rye crops on all Lithuanian farms depends on soil productivity by 63.0%. The largest rye crop capacity in 1993-2000 was observed in Joniškis, Pakruojis and Radviliškis regions. In future, the subzone of Southeast Lithuania and Šilutė region should be used as the areas for rye crop growing. The neighbouring regions are suitable for rye crop growing (Žemaitija - Plungė, Telšiai and Šilalė regions).

Vandalino Šukevičiaus nuopelnai archeologijai vis dar nepakankamai įvertinti. Jis tyrė įvairias priešistorės sritis, buvo aktyvus visuomenės veikėjas. Straipsnyje aptariama viena iš Šukevičiaus tyrimų krypčių – akmens amžiaus Lietuvoje tyrimai, kuriuos atliko savo iniciatyva (daugiausia Lydos ir Trakų apskrityse). Po mirties didžioji Vandalino Šukevičiaus kūrybinio palikimo dalis dingo. Išlikę akmens amžiaus radiniai šiuo metu saugomi Lietuvos nacionaliniame muziejuje Vilniuje ir Lenkijos muziejuose. Akmens amžiui skirta 10 iš 41 publikuoto archeologinės tematikos darbo. Vandalinas Šukevičius surinko ne mažiau kaip 5000 titnago radinių ir apie 400 akmeninių ir titnaginių kirvių. Per 36 archeologinės veiklos metus aptiko 150 akmens amžiaus gyvenviečių, kurias pažymėjo žemėlapyje. Šukevičių mažiau domino atskiri gaminiai, jis linko į platesnio pobūdžio apibendrinimus, išsakydamas nemažai pažangių idėjų ir dirbdamas darbą, kuris iki šiol neprarado reikšmės. Iš tokių minėtini neolito ir bronzos amžiaus kapinyno Lankiškėse tyrimai 1913–1914 m. Reikšmingiausi Šukevičiau darbai skirti Vilniaus gubernijos akmens amžiuje apžvalgai, atsitiktinai rastų akmens ir titnago kirvių analizei. Vandalinas Šukevičius laikytinas akmens amžiaus Lietuvoje atradėju. Jo darbai padėjo pagrindą tolesniems šio laikotarpio tyrimams, nors iki šiol mažai aptarti ir panaudoti. In October 10, 2002 we celebrate 150 years since the birth of Vandalinas Šukevičius (Wandalin Szukiewicz), the amateur archaeologist and the landlord. Though his person never was forgotten, nevertheless, little light was shed upon his contribution to archaeology. V. Šukevičius worked in various fields of prehistoric researches, acted as a public figure of that time, notwithstanding his uneasy personal life. This paper strives to deal at large with one of directions pursued by V. Šukevičius - the Stone Age investigations in Lithuania. On his own initiative, he investigated Stone Age settlements, mostly in the provinces of then Lyda and Trakai (currently districts of Šalčininkai and Varėna in Lithuania and district of Varanavas of Gardinas oblast in Byelorussia). He spent the greater part of life in the native Nočia (now Byelorussia, 1,3 km away from the Lithuanian border) and died there on December 1, 1919. After his death most manuscripts of him scattered or disappeared. Presently the remaining finds of Stone Age are kept with the Lithuanian National Museum in Vilnius and with the museums of Poland. V. Šukevičius showed interest in Stone Age settlements since 1886. At first he explored them and collected the surface material, further went deeper into the problems of population of his dwelling region, and even investigated ancient burial sites. All researches of V. Šukevičius into Stone Age settlements may be divided into 3 large groups, such as exploration of monuments and publication of results along with their presentation to the general public; investigation of ancient burial sites with publication of results and generalizing studies. Out of his 41 printed papers on the subject of archaeology, 10 with certain reservations were devoted to the Stone Age. V. Šukevičius collected minimally 5000 flint finds and about 400 stone and flint axes. During 36 years of archaeological activities he found about 150 Stone Age settlements and mapped them. Showing less interest in single artefacts, V. Sukevicius tended to wider regional generalizations and raised not a few progressive ideas. Many studies done by him remain of importance even nowadays. Among them are wide investigations of the Neolithic - Bronze Age burial site of Lankiskes (now Byelorussia). The most significant published studies of V. Sukevicius were designed to review the Stone Age in the then Vilnius province and to analyze stray stone and flint axes. Vandalinas Sukevicius may be regarded as a discoverer of the Stone Age in Lithuania. His works served a basis for further researches of this period. However, they never enjoyed proper studying and employment.

Lietuviškos literatūros kiekybės ir kokybės Pietryčių Lietuvos tautinių mažumų bendrojo lavinimo mokyklų bibliotekose nagrinėjimas yra viena iš aktualiausių pedagoginių problemų. Autoriui rūpėjo kultūrinė-šviečiamoji šio regiono mokyklų bibliotekų kryptis: mokinių pažintinių poreikių, laisvalaikio, etnokultūros, kūrybiškumo plėtojimas; bibliotekininkai - tarpininkai tarp mokytojų ir mokinių mokant valstybinės kalbos, žinantys, kaip lietuviškas žodis skinasi kelią į vaiko sielą . Kita kryptis - tiriamasis-ugdomasis darbas: mokyklų bibliotekos aptariamos kaip mokymo ir vienas iš pirminių nuolatinio mokymosi šaltinių ir mokiniams, ir mokytojams. 1996 m. atlikto minėtų mokyklų bibliotekų padėties tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad:1.Šalčininkų ir Vilniaus rajonų tautinių mažumų mokyklų bibliotekų fonduose tyrimo metu vyravo nuo sovietmečio laikų išlikusi rusiška literatūra: jos 2-5 kartus buvo daugiau, negu lietuviškos literatūros.2. 1993-1996 m. iš Bibliotekų kolektoriaus ir Atviros Lietuvos fondo Šalčininkų bei Vilniaus rajonų mokyklų bibliotekos lietuvių kalba gavo daugiausia metodinės literatūros. Naujų knygų rusų kalba jos beveik negavo, stokojo reikiamos metodinės medžiagos, grožinės literatūros lietuvių, lenkų, rusų ir kitomis kalbomis.3.Dauguma tirtų mokyklų bibliotekininkų neturėjo reikiamos kvalifikacijos. Komplektuojant bibliotekų fondus nebuvo bendradarbiaujama su rajonų viešosiomis bibliotekomis, nors literatūros trūko. Analysis of quality and quantity of Lithuanian literature available in national minority schools of general education of Southeast Lithuania is one of the most relevant pedagogic issues. The author was interested in the cultural-educational direction of school libraries of the region, i.e. development of cognitive needs, leisure, ethnic culture, and creativity of pupils; and the role of librarians as intermediaries between teachers and pupils in learning the state language, and as the gatekeepers of the knowledge of how a Lithuanian word finds it path to a child’s sole. Yet another direction is the investigative-educational work: school libraries are discussed as a source and one of the key primary sources for teaching and continuous learning for both pupils and teachers. In 1996, the research on the state of the aforementioned school libraries provides that: 1) Russian literature that remained since Soviet times was predominant in libraries of national minority schools situated in the regions of Šalčininkai and Vilnius: there was 2-5 times more of such literature than Lithuanian literature. 2) During the period of 1993-1996, school libraries situated in the regions of Šalčininkai and Vilnius received the most methodological literature in Lithuania form the Collector of Libraries and the Open Society Fund Lithuania. They almost got no books in Russian, required methodological materials, and fiction in Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, and other languages. 3) Most researched school librarians had no required qualification. When collecting library funds, there was no cooperation with regional public libraries although literature was scares.

Alytaus rajono Nemajūnų Šv. Apaštalų Petro ir Pauliaus bažnyčios muziejėlyje saugomas dvipusis bažnytinės vėliavos paveikslas. Vienoje jo pusėje nutapyta kompozicija "Švč. Mergelė Marija, Sielų Gelbėtoja", o kitoje - "Nukryžiuotasis". Kompozicijų visuma nesuardyta, išliko nemaži autentiškos tapybos fragmentai. Specifinė, organišku baroko ir klasicizmo junginiu išsiskirianti stilistika leido iškelti Pranciškaus Smuglevičiaus (1745-1807) autorystės versiją, kurią labiausiai sutvirtino "Švč. Mergelės" kompozicijos apatinėje dalyje nutapyti šešių žmonių figūrų, išreiškiančių skaistyklos sielas, fragmentai. Straipsnyje dvipusio paveikslo kompozicijos analizuojamos lyginant jas su kitais P. Smuglevičiaus kūriniais, išryškinant svarbiausias ypatybes bei jų abiejų derinio prasmingumą. Gedulinei vėliavai skirto Švč. Mergelės Marijos atvaizdo ikonografija turi ypatybių, būdingų katalikiškai potridentinei dailei. Antrosios dvipusio paveikslo pusės - "Nukryžiuotojo Jėzaus" - atributavimas yra sudėtingesnis, kadangi šis kūrinys yra Simono Čechavičiaus to paties pavadinimo paveikslo kopija. Jis skiriasi kai kuriomis detalėmis, pakeista bendrąja stiliaus išraiška ir emocine kūrinio tonacija. The article presents a newly found work of P. Smuglevičius (Franciszek Smugliewicz, 1745-1807). The work is kept in Nemajūnai (Alytus district), in St. Apostles Peter and Paul's church depository. It is a double-sided painting (oil on canvas, 80 x 54.8 cm) which has earlier been in a funeral church banner. On the one side of the painting there is Virgin Mary, the Rescuer of Purgatory souls (of the mont Carmel), on the other side there is Christ crucified. The painting was already in the Nemajūnai church before 1881. The earlier evidences are not precise enough to assert that the painting was created about 1786 and exactly for this church. It could get into the church later, between 1830-1880. It was found out by the method of comparative analysis that the painting "Virgin Mary, the Rescuer of souls" is an original composition of P. Smuglevičius. "The Crucified" is a copy of "The Crucified" by Simonas Čechavičius (Szymon Czechowicz, 1689-1775), the teacher of the artist P. Smuglevičius (the original belongs now to Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius). Another copy of the same painting exists, possibly painted by P. Smuglevičius or his students. It is kept in Šalčininkėliai (Šalčininkai district), in St. George's church.

Kalbant apie ikimokyklinę dvikalbystę, kyla natūralus klausimas, ar dvikalbis vaikas vartoja dvi savarankiškas kalbų sistemas. Kyla ir kitas klausimas, kokiu mastu dvi konkuruojančios struktūros gali išlikti nepakitusios ir kokiu laipsniu jos viena kitą veikia ir keičia. Straipsnyje siekta išsiaiškinti, kokioje kalbinėje aplinkoje auga vaikai iš tautiškai mišrių ir kitataučių šeimų, kurie lanko vaikų darželių lietuviškas grupes; atskleisti tėvų motyvus. Vykdytoje apklausoje dalyvavo 349 mišrių ir kitakalbių šeimų tėvai iš įvairių Lietuvos regioninių vietovių (Vilniaus, Visagino, Jonavos, Kauno, Mažeikių, Naujosios Akmenės, Pabradės, Juodžilių, Šakių, Šalčininkų, Širvintų, Švenčionėlių, Tauragnų, Utenos). Tyrimo rezultatai patvirtina daugelio ankstyvosios dvikalbystės tyrimo nuomonę, kad tautiškai mišriose ir kitatautėse šeimose toleruojamas mišrus kalbų vartojimas, kuris apsunkina ikimokyklinio amžiaus vaiko kalbų išmokimą. Būtina, kad tėvai ir vaikų darželio pedagogai bendradarbiautų, vaikams mokantis kalbų: kartu aptartų kalbinę situaciją, kurioje yra atsidūręs vaikas; vaiko vienos ar kitos kalbos mokymosi problemas, kurią kalbą vaikas moka silpniau, kurią kalbą reikia toliau stiprinti, atsižvelgiant į vaiko perspektyvą, kaip mažinti kalbų interferenciją ir t. t. Labai svarbu laiduoti tėvų teisę leisti vaikus į lietuviškus darželius, taip garantuojant geresnį valstybinės kalbos išmokimą dar prieš mokyklą. According to various researches and studies parents and other members of ethnic minority families, mixed families do not use method "one person - one language" because of the lack of information about the development of bilingualism of children of preschool age. Therefore, they approve of their children using mixed languages. Consequently bilingualism in the family develops spontaneously as mixed languages interfere and languages acquisition for bilingual child becomes more complex.

Pietryčių Lietuvoje, vyraujant lenkų tautybės gyventojams, bendrojo lavinimo mokyklose mokoma lietuvių, rusų ir lenkų kalbomis. Šių kalbų santykis per pastarąjį pusšimtį metų ne kartą keitėsi priklausomai nuo politinės padėties pokyčių. Sovietiniais metais dėstomosios kalbos keitėsi kelis kartus. Ilgainiui dėstomųjų kalbų požiūriu susiformavo mišrios mokyklos, kuriose vyravo rusiškos klasės. Atgimimo pradžioje (nuo 1987 m.) lenkiškos vietos valdžios pastangomis lenkiškos klasės buvo įkurtos beveik visose mokyklose, kur jų iki tol nebuvo. Lietuviškos klasės imtos kurti vėliau, daugiausia pradedant 1992 m., kai buvo paleistos Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų rajonų savivaldybės. Labiausiai jų pagausėjo nuo 1996 m., kada Vyriausybė lietuviškų mokyklų steigimą šiuose rajonuose pavedė Vilniaus apskričiai. Nepaisant to, šiuo metu lietuviškų mokyklų (klasių) nėra 33 vietovėse, kuriose yra lenkiškos arba rusiškos klasės. Lenkiškų klasių mokinių skaičius ėmė didėti nuo Atgimimo pradžios, o lietuviškų – tik atkūrus šalies valstybingumą. Pastaraisiais metais lietuviškų mokyklų I klasės gausėjo itin sparčiai. Sociologinių apklausų duomenys rodo, kad ši tendencija tęsis ir ateityje. Maždaug nuo 1994 m. labai sumenkus rusiškoms klasėms, o lietuviškoms toliau gausėjant, lenkiškų I klasių mokinių ėmė mažėti. Lietuviškų mokyklų plėtrai trukdo sunki šalies ekonomikos būklė bei teisinė švietimo padėtis (švietimas priklauso savivaldybėms). Šioms mokykloms trūksta patalpų, mokymo priemonių, mokytojų, pastariesiems – butų. Tam reikia papildomo finansavimo. Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų rajonų lenkiškos savivaldybės, turėdamos savo rankose švietimo reikalus, taip pat Lenkų rinkimų akcijos veikėjai trukdo lietuviškų mokyklų plėtrai. In Southeastern Lithuania, where Polish is the predominating nationality of the local population, three languages of instruction - Lithuanian, Russian and Polish - are used in comprehensive schools of the region. The proportion of the languages underwent several changes during the last five decades due to political transformations of the country. There were several changes of the languages of instruction during the Soviet period. Finally, as a result of that process, comprehensive schools with several languages of instruction came to life, yet Russian was the main language of such schools. Only at the beginning of Resurrection (from 1987), essentially by the efforts of local administration, Polish classes were established almost in every school where they had not existed earlier. The process of establishment of Lithuanian classes started later, actually in 1992, when the administration officials of Vilnius and Šalčininkai municipalities were substituted. But a real boom of Lithuanian classes was around 1996, when the establishment of Lithuanian classes in the region was delegated to Vilnius County authorities. Nevertheless, the Lithuanian classes do not exist in 33 settlements where Polish or Russian classes are established. The number of pupils in Polish classes started increasing at the very beginning of Resurrection, while in Lithuanian classes it started growing only after the statehood of Lithuania had been reestablished. The recent years evidenced a rapid growth of 1st forms in Lithuanian schools. Sociologic survey confirms the tendency to proceed in the near future. To begin with 1994, when Russian classes started rapidly decreasing and the Lithuanian ones increasing, the number of first formers in Polish classes started decreasing, too. The development of Lithuanian schools of the region is disturbed by the poor economical situation and the legal state of education (education is included in the regulation sphere of municipalities). Lithuanian schools badly need premises, teaching facilities, teachers, living compartments for teachers. All this requires additional financing. Polish municipalities of Vilnius and Šalčininkai regions, having operational matters of education in their responsibility, with activists of Poles electoral action to aid them, are focusing their activities on disturbing the development of Lithuanian schools in Southeastern Lithuania.

Prasidėjus karui, į Lietuvą plūstelėjo pabėgėlių iš Lenkijos banga. Susiklostė unikali situacija, kai žmonės, nemėgę kaimynų, bėgo pas juos, gelbėdami savo gyvybes. Lenkų ir lietuvių nesutarimai paaštrėjo 1941 m., Vermachtui įžengus į Lietuvos teritoriją. Šovinistines nuotaikas ypatingai demonstravo radikalūs lenkų nacionalistai, aktyviai veikę atskirose vokiečių institucijose Vilniuje ir įsteigę vadinamąsias vietos savivaldos organizacijas bei pagalbinę policiją įvairiose Vilniaus regiono vietovėse. Lietuvių ir lenkų nesutarimai ilgą laiką nekėlė jokių rūpesčių. Tačiau konfliktas neišvengiamai turėjo kilti. Vokiečiams paėmus valdžią į savo rankas, bandyta pasinaudoti lietuvių ir lenkų nesutarimais. 1942 m. siekiant supriešinti lietuvius su lenkais, pareikalauta iškeldinti iš Rytų Lietuvos vadinamuosius statistinius lenkų tautybės asmenis. Lietuviai pareigūnai turėjo patvirtinti iškeldinimo dokumentus savo parašais, o lietuviai policininkai – tiesiogiai vykdyti iškeldinimo procedūras. Vokiečių administracija rėmė bei apginklavo lenkų partizanus, kurie terorizavo Švenčionių rajoną, žudė lietuvius ir puldinėjo Lietuvos policiją. Lietuvos saugumo tarnyba turėjo net nuotraukas, kuriose vokiečių policijos pareigūnai apginkluoja Krašto Armijos (Armia Krajowa) būrius Šalčininkų rajone. Lietuvių ir lenkų priešiškumas sumažėjo tik karo pabaigoje. Daugelyje vietų, ypatingai Vilniaus rajone, tarpininkaujant vokiečių pareigūnams lenkų partizanai bei Lietuvos policija susitarė nepulti vieniems kitų ir drauge kovoti su bolševikų partizanų gaujomis. 1943 m. Krašto armijos vadovai linko kartu su Raudonąja armija kovoti prieš vokiečių vermachtą, tuo tarpu Lietuvos pasipriešinimo judėjimas neatmetė galimybės kovoti prieš Raudonosios armijos invaziją, jei Vokietijos politinė vadovybė pripažins Lietuvos žmonių teisę atkurti savo valstybę ir kariuomenę. When the war broke out, refugees from Poland flooded Lithuania. This is probably a unique case when people who despised others fled to them in order to save their own lives. Confrontation between Lithuanians and Poles started growing in 1941, when Wehrmacht entered the territory of Lithuania. Chauvinistic sentiments were particularly marked by reactionary Polish nationalists, who acted fairly widely in individual German institutions in Vilnius and established the so-called local self-governing bodies in individual areas of Vilnius Region, the Polish auxiliary police was set up. Lithuanian and Polish contradictions for a long time did not result in any major confrontation. However, a conflict was inevitably coming to a head. As soon as Germans took power into their hands they tried to exploit contradictions between Lithuanians and Poles. In 1942, an effort was made to foster hostility between Lithuanians and Poles by evicting from Eastern Lithuania the so-called statistical Poles. Lithuanian officers were to confirm the eviction with their signatures and Lithuanian policemen were to conduct eviction. The German administration supported and well armed the Polish guerrillas who raged in areas of the Švenčionys County, terrorizing and killing Lithuanians and attacking the Lithuanian police. The Lithuanian security service even had photographs showing how German Police officers armed Armia Krajowa (AK) squads in the Šalčininkiai District. The animosity between the Lithuanians and Poles somewhat decreased only when the war was coming to an end. In many places and Vilnius District on particular an agreement mediated by German officers was reached between the Polish guerrillas and the Lithuanian police not to attack each other and to fight together against Bolshevik guerrilla gangs. In 1943, A K leadership tended Jointly with the Red Army to fight against the German Wehrmacht, whereas the Lithuanian Resistance movement did not reject the possibility of defending against the invasion by the Red Army together with the German army if the German political leadership recognized the right of the Lithuanian people to restore their state and army. Nevertheless in 1942-1944 the Lithuanian and Polish underground Resistance movements in numerous secret discussions tried to mitigate the mutual hatred and to look for compromises.

Anciulių (Ašmenos r., Baltarusijos Respublika) pilkapynas, buvęs netoli Tabariškių (Šalčininkų r.), yra vienas pirmųjų kasinėtų Rytų Lietuvos pilkapynų. 1856 m. šiame, dabar jau sunaikintame, paminkle du pilkapius kasinėjo Vilniaus Archeologinės komisijos narys-bendradarbis L. Kondratovičius-Sirokomlė. Kasinėjimų rezultatai nebuvo publikuoti, tačiau išliko jų aprašymo rankraštis – 1856 m. liepos 24 d. laiškas Archeologinei komisijai, šiuo metu saugomas Lietuvos Mokslų akademijos bibliotekoje. Straipsnyje publikuojami jame aprašytų tyrinėjimų duomenys. Laiške minima, kad buvo ištirti du pilkapiai. Apie jų konstrukciją minėtame laiške nepateikiama jokios informacijos. Minima, kad viename pilkapyje rastas ietigalis ir kirvis, kitame – degintinių kaulų, keramikos šukių, sulaužyta vytinė antkaklė kūginiais galais, įvijinių žalvario karolių, įvijų fragmentų, šešios apyrankės, apgalvio plokštelių, apkalų, trys moliniai verpstukai, keturi peiliai, kibirėlio rankena(?). Laiške pateikiamas radinių sąrašas ir dalies jų piešiniai. Kai kurie dirbiniai tyrėjo identifikuoti klaidingai. Atrodo, pirmajame pilkapyje rastas vyro kapas su būdingomis įkapėmis, o antrajame greičiausiai būta 2–4 moterų kapų. Pilkapiuose aptiktų dirbinių likimas yra neaiškus. Tyrinėtieji Anciulių pilkapiai greičiausiai priklauso vėlyvojo geležies amžiaus pirmajai pusei, t. y. VIII a. pabaigai – X a. pradžiai. Burial mounds of Eastern Lithuania have been investigated since the middle of the 19th century. One of the few barrow cemeteries explored at that time and adequately documented is Anciuliai (Oshmiany district, Belarus) near Tabariškės (Šalčininkai district). In 1856 excavations were carried out by L. Kondratowicz-Syrokomla, a member of the Archaeological Commission. The results were not published but a manuscript of their account, a letter written on 24 July 1856 to the Archaeological Commission, has survived and is available at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Two burial mounds had been excavated. No information about their construction was left by L. Kondratowicz-Syrokomla. The first mound contained only a spearhead and an axe, which could be considered as buried items of a male grave. In the second mound some cremated bones and a number of pieces of ceramics, jewellery, knives, etc. were discovered. Two to four graves (most likely female ones) could have been there. Judging from the analogies of other barrow cemeteries of Eastern Lithuania, the graves could be dated between the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 10th centuries.
