The second phase of the APOGEE survey is providing near-infrared, high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of stars in the halo, disk, bar and bulge of the Milky Way. The near-infrared spectral window is especially important in the study of the Galactic bulge, where stars are obscured by the dust and gas of the disk in its line-of-sight. We present a chemical characterisation of the globular cluster NGC 6544 with high-resolution spectroscopy. The characterisation of the cluster chemical fingerprint, given its status of "interloper" towards the Galactic bulge and clear signatures of tidal disruption in its core is crucial for future chemical tagging efforts. Cluster members were selected from the DR16 of the APOGEE survey, using chemo-dynamical criteria of individual stars. A sample of 23 members of the cluster was selected. An analysis considering the intra-cluster abundance variations, known anticorrelations is given. According to the RGB content of the cluster, the iron content and $\alpha$-enhancement are [Fe/H] $= -1.44 \pm 0.04$ dex and [$\alpha$/Fe] $= 0.20 \pm 0.04$ dex, respectively. Cluster members show a significant spread in [Fe/H] and [Al/Fe] that is larger than expected based on measurement errors. An [Al/Fe] spread, signal of an Mg-Al anticorrelation is observed and used to constraint the cluster mass budget, along with C, N, Mg, Si, K, Ca, and Ce element variations are discussed. The updated H-band spectral line list (from \lambda 15,000 - 17,000\AA) adopted by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) for the SDSS IV Data Release 16 (DR16) is presented here. The APOGEE line list is a combination of atomic and molecular lines with data from laboratory, theoretical, and astrophysical sources. Oscillator strengths and damping constants are adjusted using high signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectra of the Sun and alpha Boo (Arcturus) as "standard stars". Updates to the DR16 line list, when compared to the previous DR14 version, are the inclusion of molecular H_2O and FeH lines, as well as a much larger (by a factor of ~4) atomic line list, which includes significantly more transitions with hyperfine splitting. More recent references and line lists for the crucial molecules CO and OH were used, as well as for C_2 and SiH. In contrast to DR14, DR16 contains measurable lines from the heavy neutron-capture elements cerium (as Ce II), neodymium (as Nd II), and ytterbium (as Yb II), as well as one line from rubidium (as Rb I), that may be detectable in a small fraction of APOGEE red giants., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, accepted by AJ

We present the kinematic and chemical profiles of red giant stars observed by the APOGEE-2 survey in the direction of the Jhelum stellar stream, a Milky Way substructure located in the inner halo of the Milky Way at a distance from the Sun of $\approx$ 13 kpc. From the six APOGEE-2 Jhelum pointings, we isolate stars with log($g$) $<$ 3.5, leaving a sample of 289 red giant stars. From this sample of APOGEE giants, we identified seven stars that are consistent with the astrometric signal from $Gaia$ DR2 for this stream. Of these seven, one falls onto the RGB along the same sequence as the Jhelum stars presented by \cite{ji20}. This new Jhelum member has [Fe/H]=-2.2 and is at the tip of the red giant branch. By selecting high orbital eccentricity, metal-rich stars, we identify red giants in our APOGEE sample that are likely associated with the $Gaia$-Enceladus-Sausage (GES) merger. We compare the abundance profiles of the Jhelum stars and GES stars and find similar trends in $\alpha$-elements, as expected for low-metallicity populations. However, we find that the orbits for GES and Jhelum stars are not generally consistent with a shared origin. The chemical abundances for the APOGEE Jhelum star and other confirmed members of the stream are similar to stars in known stellar streams and thus are consistent with an accreted dwarf galaxy origin for the progenitor of the stream, although we cannot rule out a globular cluster origin., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present an infrared (IR) characterization of the born-again planetary nebulae (PNe) A30 and A78 using IR images and spectra. We demonstrate that the carbon-rich dust in A30 and A78 is spatially coincident with the H-poor ejecta and coexists with hot X-ray-emitting gas up to distances of 50$''$ from the central stars (CSPNs). Dust forms immediately after the born-again event and survives for 1000 yr in the harsh environment around the CSPN as it is destroyed and pushed away by radiation pressure and dragged by hydrodynamical effects. Spitzer IRS spectral maps showed that the broad spectral features at 6.4 and 8.0 $\mu$m, attributed to amorphous carbon formed in H-deficient environments, are associated with the disrupted disk around their CSPN, providing an optimal environment for charge exchange reactions with the stellar wind that produces the soft X-ray emission of these sources. Nebular and dust properties are modeled for A30 with Cloudy taking into account different carbonaceous dust species. Our models predict dust temperatures in the 40-230 K range, five times lower than predicted by previous works. Gas and dust masses for the born-again ejecta in A30 are estimated to be $M_\mathrm{gas}=(4.41^{+0.55}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ and $M_\mathrm{dust}=(3.20^{+3.21}_{-2.06})\times10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$, which can be used to estimate a total ejected mass and mass-loss rate for the born-again event of $(7.61^{+3.76}_{-2.20})\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $\dot{M}=[5-60]\times10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Taking into account the carbon trapped into dust grains, we estimate that the C/O mass ratio of the H-poor ejecta of A30 is larger than 1, which favors the very late thermal pulse model over the alternate hypothesis of a nova-like event., Comment: 14 pages, 11 Figures, 1 Table; Accepted to MNRAS

Recent evidence based on APOGEE data for stars within a few kpc of the Galactic centre suggests that dissolved globular clusters (GCs) contribute significantly to the stellar mass budget of the inner halo. In this paper we enquire into the origins of tracers of GC dissolution, N-rich stars, that are located in the inner 4 kpc of the Milky Way. From an analysis of the chemical compositions of these stars we establish that about 30% of the N-rich stars previously identified in the inner Galaxy may have an accreted origin. This result is confirmed by an analysis of the kinematic properties of our sample. The specific frequency of N-rich stars is quite large in the accreted population, exceeding that of its in situ counterparts by near an order of magnitude, in disagreement with predictions from numerical simulations. We explore the relationships between the chemistry, ages, and locations of stars in the Galaxy using asteroseismic data from the K2 mission and spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. Previous studies have used giant stars in the Kepler field to map the relationship between the chemical composition and the ages of stars at the solar circle. Consistent with prior work, we find that stars with high [Alpha/Fe] have distinct, older ages in comparison to stars with low [Alpha/Fe]. We provide age estimates for red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Kepler field, which support and build upon previous age estimates by taking into account the effect of alpha-enrichment on opacity. Including this effect for [Alpha/Fe]-rich stars results in up to 10% older ages for low-mass stars relative to corrected solar mixture calculations. This is a significant effect that Galactic archaeology studies should take into account. Looking beyond the Kepler field, we estimate ages for 735 red giant branch stars from the K2 mission, mapping age trends as a function of the line of sight. We find that the age distributions for low- and high-[Alpha/Fe] stars converge with increasing distance from the Galactic plane, in agreement with suggestions from earlier work. We find that K2 stars with high [Alpha/Fe] appear to be younger than their counterparts in the Kepler field, overlapping more significantly with a similarly aged low-[Alpha/Fe] population. Hydrodynamical (or 3D) and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects are known to affect abundance analyses. However, there are very few observational abundance testsof 3D and NLTE models. We developed a new way of testing the abundance predictions of 3D and NLTE models, taking advantage of large spectroscopic survey data. We use a line-by-line analysis of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) spectra (H band) with the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High accUracy Spectra (BACCHUS). We compute line-by-line abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, and Fe for a large number of globular cluster K giants in the APOGEE survey. We compare this line-by-line analysis against NLTE and 3D predictions. While the 1D-NLTE models provide corrections in the right direction, there are quantitative discrepancies between different models. We observe a better agreement with the data for the models including reliable collisional cross-sections. The agreement between data and models is not always satisfactory when the 3D spectra are computed in LTE. However, we note that for a fair comparison, 3D corrections should be computed with self-consistently derived stellar parameters, and not on 1D models with identical stellar parameters. Finally, we focus on 3D and NLTE effects on Fe lines in the H band, where we observe a systematic difference in abundance relative to the value from the optical. Our results suggest that the metallicities obtained from the H band are more accurate in metal-poor giants. More atomic data and extended self-consistent 3D-NLTE computations need to be made. Integrated light spectroscopy from galaxies can be used to study the stellar populations that cannot be resolved into individual stars. This analysis relies on stellar population synthesis (SPS) techniques to study the formation history and structure of galaxies. However, the spectral templates available for SPS are limited, especially in the near-infrared. We present A-LIST (APOGEE Library of Infrared SSP Templates), a new set of high-resolution, near-IR SSP spectral templates spanning a wide range of ages (2-12 Gyr), metallicities ($\rm -2.2 < [M/H] < +0.4$) and $\alpha$ abundances ($\rm -0.2 < [\alpha/M] < +0.4$). This set of SSP templates is the highest resolution ($R\sim22500$) available in the near infrared, and the first such based on an empirical stellar library. Our models are generated using spectra of $\sim$300,000 stars spread across the Milky Way, with a wide range of metallicities and abundances, from the APOGEE survey. We show that our model spectra provide accurate fits to M31 globular cluster spectra taken with APOGEE, with best-fit metallicities agreeing with those of previous estimates to within $\sim$0.1 dex. We also compare these model spectra to lower-resolution E-MILES models and demonstrate that we recover the ages of these models to within $\sim$1.5 Gyr. Carbon stars have been and are extensively studied, given their complex internal structure and their peculiar chemical composition, which make them living laboratories to test stellar structure and evolution theories of evolved stars. They are the most relevant dust manufacturers, thus playing a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies. We study the dust mineralogy of circumstellar envelope (CE) of C-stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), to achieve a better understanding of the dust formation process in the outflow of these objects. We investigate the expected distribution of C-stars in the observational planes built with the MIRI filters mounted onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to select the best planes allowing an exhaustive characterisation of the stars. We compare the synthetic spectral energy distributions, obtained by the modelling of asymptotic giant branch stars and of the dust formation process in the wind, with the spectra of carbon stars in the LMC, taken with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. From the detailed comparison between synthetic modelling and observation we characterise the individual sources and derive the detailed mineralogy of the dust in the CE. We find that precipitation of MgS on SiC seeds is common to all non metal-poor carbon stars. Solid carbon is the dominant dust component, with percentages above $80\%$ in all cases; a percentage between $10\%$ and $20\%$ of carbon dust is under the form of graphite, the remaining being amorphous carbon. Regarding the observational planes based on the MIRI filters, the colour-magnitude ([F770W]-[F1800W], [F1800W]) plane allows the best understanding of the degree of obscuration of the stars, while the ([F1800W]-[F2550W], [F1800W]) diagram allows a better discrimination among stars of different metallicity., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures 2 tables. Modelling dust formation in single stars evolving through the carbon-star stage of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) reproduces well the mid-infrared colours and magnitudes of most of the C-rich sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), apart from a small subset of extremely red objects (EROs). The analysis of EROs spectral energy distribution suggests the presence of large quantities of dust, which demand gas densities in the outflow significantly higher than expected from theoretical modelling. We propose that binary interaction mechanisms that involve common envelope (CE) evolution could be a possible explanation for these peculiar stars; the CE phase is favoured by the rapid growth of the stellar radius occurring after C$/$O overcomes unity. Our modelling of the dust provides results consistent with the observations for mass-loss rates $\dot M \sim 5\times 10^{-4}~\dot M/$yr, a lower limit to the rapid loss of the envelope experienced in the CE phase. We propose that EROs could possibly hide binaries of orbital periods $\sim$days and are likely to be responsible for a large fraction of the dust production rate in galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

The recently discovered phosphorus-rich stars pose a challenge to stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis theory, as none of the existing models can explain their extremely peculiar chemical abundances pattern. Apart from the large phosphorus enhancement, such stars also show enhancement in other light (O, Mg, Si, Al) and heavy (e.g., Ce) elements. We have obtained high-resolution optical spectra of two optically bright phosphorus-rich stars (including a new P-rich star), for which we have deter-mined a larger number of elemental abundances (from C to Pb). We confirm the unusual light-element abundance pattern with very large enhancements of Mg, Si, Al, and P, and possibly some Cu enhancement, but the spectra of the new P-rich star is the only one to reveal some C(+N) enhancement.When compared to other appropriate metal-poor and neutron-capture enhanced stars, the two P-rich stars show heavy-element overabundances similar to low neutron density s-process nucleosynthesis,with high first- (Sr, Y, Zr) and second-peak (Ba, La, Ce, Nd) element enhancements (even some Pb enhancement in one star) and a negative [Rb/Sr] ratio. However, this s-process is distinct from the one occurring in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The notable distinctions encompass larger[Ba/La] and lower Eu and Pb than their AGB counterparts. Our observations should guide stellar nucleosynthesis theoreticians and observers to identify the P-rich star progenitor, which represents anew site for s-process nucleosynthesis, with important implications for the chemical evolution of our Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted in ApJL

The chemical homogeneity of surviving stellar clusters contains important clues about interstellar medium (ISM) mixing efficiency, star formation, and the enrichment history of the Galaxy. Existing measurements in a handful of open clusters suggest homogeneity in several elements at the 0.03 dex level. Here we present (i) a new cluster member catalog based only on APOGEE radial velocities and Gaia-DR2 proper motions, (ii) improved abundance uncertainties for APOGEE cluster members, and (iii) the dependence of cluster homogeneity on Galactic and cluster properties, using abundances of eight elements from the APOGEE survey for ten high-quality clusters. We find that cluster homogeneity is uncorrelated with Galactocentric distance, |Z|, age, and metallicity. However, velocity dispersion, which is a proxy for cluster mass, is positively correlated with intrinsic scatter at relatively high levels of significance for [Ca/Fe] and [Mg/Fe]. We also see a possible positive correlation at a low level of significance for [Ni/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [Fe/H], while [Cr/Fe] and [Mn/Fe] are uncorrelated. The elements that show a correlation with velocity dispersion are those that are predominantly produced by core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). However, the small sample size and relatively low correlation significance highlight the need for follow-up studies. If borne out by future studies, these findings would suggest a quantitative difference between the correlation lengths of elements produced predominantly by Type~Ia SNe versus CCSNe, which would have implications for Galactic chemical evolution models and the feasibility of chemical tagging., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 21 pages (plus appendix), 21 figures, 4 tables

We compare abundance ratio trends in a sample of $\sim 11,000$ Milky Way bulge stars ($R_{\rm GC} < 3$ kpc) from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) to those of APOGEE stars in the Galactic disk ($5$ kpc $< R_{\rm GC} < 11$ kpc). We divide each sample into low-Ia (high-[Mg/Fe]) and high-Ia (low-[Mg/Fe]) populations, and in each population we examine the median trends of [X/Mg] vs. [Mg/H] for elements X = Fe, O, Na, Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Ce. To remove small systematic trends of APOGEE abundances with stellar $\log(g)$, we resample the disk stars to match the $\log(g)$ distributions of the bulge data. After doing so, we find nearly identical median trends for low-Ia disk and bulge stars for all elements. High-Ia trends are similar for most elements, with noticeable (0.05-0.1 dex) differences for Mn, Na, and Co. The close agreement of abundance trends (with typical differences $\lesssim 0.03$ dex) implies that similar nucleosynthetic processes enriched bulge and disk stars despite the different star formation histories and physical conditions of these regions. For example, we infer that differences in the high mass slope of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) between disk and bulge must have been $\lesssim 0.30$. This agreement, and the generally small scatter about the median sequences, means that one can predict all of a bulge star's APOGEE abundances with good accuracy knowing only its measured [Mg/Fe] and [Mg/H] and the observed trends of disk stars., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables

The Galactic Center region, including the nuclear disk, has until recently been largely avoided in chemical census studies because of extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Making use of the latest APOGEE data release (DR16), we are able for the first time to study cool AGB stars and supergiants in this region. The stellar parameters of five known AGB stars and one supergiant star (VR 5-7) show that their location is well above the tip of the RGB.We study metallicities of 157 M giants situated within 150 pc of the Galactic center from observations obtained by the APOGEE survey with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE/ASPCAP pipeline making use of the cool star grid down to 3200 K. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the Galactic Center region. We detect a clear bimodal structure in the metallicity distribution function, with a dominant metal-rich peak of [Fe/H] ~ +0.3 dex and a metal-poor peak around [Fe/H]= -0.5 dex, which is 0.2 dex poorer than Baade's Window. The alpha-elements Mg, Si, Ca, and O show a similar trend to the Galactic Bulge. The metal-poor component is enhanced in the alpha-elements, suggesting that this population could be associated with the classical bulge and a fast formation scenario. We find a clear signature of a rotating nuclear stellar disk and a significant fraction of high velocity stars with $\rm v_{gal} > 300\,km/s$; the metal-rich stars show a much higher rotation velocity ($\rm \sim 200\,km/s$) with respect to the metal-poor stars ($\rm \sim 140\,km/s$). The chemical abundances as well as the metallicity distribution function suggest that the nuclear stellar disc and the nuclear star cluster show distinct chemical signatures and might be formed differently., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for Astronomy&Astrophysics

Draco C1 is a known symbiotic binary star system composed of a carbon red giant and a hot, compact companion -- likely a white dwarf -- belonging to the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. From near-infrared spectroscopic observations taken by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), part of Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV, we provide updated stellar parameters for the cool, giant component, and constrain the temperature and mass of the hot, compact companion. Prior measurements of the periodicity of the system, based on only a few epochs of radial velocity data or relatively short baseline photometric observations, were sufficient only to place lower limits on the orbital period ($P > 300$ days). For the first time, we report precise orbital parameters for the binary system: With 43 radial velocity measurements from APOGEE spanning an observational baseline of more than 3 years, we definitively derive the period of the system to be $1220.0^{+3.7}_{-3.5}$ days. Based on the newly derived orbital period and separation of the system, together with estimates of the radius of the red giant star, we find that the hot companion must be accreting matter from the dense wind of its evolved companion., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present stellar age distributions of the Milky Way (MW) bulge region using ages for $\sim$6,000 high-luminosity ($\log(g) < 2.0$), metal-rich ($\rm [Fe/H] \ge -0.5$) bulge stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Ages are derived using {\it The Cannon} label-transfer method, trained on a sample of nearby luminous giants with precise parallaxes for which we obtain ages using a Bayesian isochrone-matching technique. We find that the metal-rich bulge is predominantly composed of old stars ($>$8 Gyr). We find evidence that the planar region of the bulge ($|Z_{\rm GC}| \le 0.25$ kpc) enriched in metallicity, $Z$, at a faster rate ($dZ/dt \sim$ 0.0034 ${\rm Gyr^{-1}}$) than regions farther from the plane ($dZ/dt \sim$ 0.0013 ${\rm Gyr^{-1}}$ at $|Z_{\rm GC}| > 1.00$ kpc). We identify a non-negligible fraction of younger stars (age $\sim$ 2--5 Gyr) at metallicities of $\rm +0.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.4$. These stars are preferentially found in the plane ($|Z_{\rm GC}| \le 0.25$ kpc) and between $R_{\rm cy} \approx 2-3$ kpc, with kinematics that are more consistent with rotation than are the kinematics of older stars at the same metallicities. We do not measure a significant age difference between stars found in and outside of the bar. These findings show that the bulge experienced an initial starburst that was more intense close to the plane than far from the plane. Then, star formation continued at super-solar metallicities in a thin disk at 2 kpc $\lesssim R_{\rm cy} \lesssim$ 3 kpc until $\sim$2 Gyr ago., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Almost all chemical elements have been made by nucleosynthetic reactions in various kind of stars and have been accumulated along our cosmic history. Among those elements, the origin of phosphorus is of extreme interest because it is known to be essential for life such as we know on Earth. However, current models of (Galactic) chemical evolution under-predict the phosphorus we observe in our Solar System. Here we report the discovery of 15 phosphorus-rich stars with unusual overabundances of O, Mg, Si, Al, and Ce. Phosphorus-rich stars likely inherit their peculiar chemistry from another nearby stellar source but their intriguing chemical abundance pattern challenge the present stellar nucleosynthesis theoretical predictions. Specific effects such as rotation or advanced nucleosynthesis in convective-reactive regions in massive stars represent the most promising alternatives to explain the existence of phosphorus-rich stars. The contribution of dissolved globular clusters (GCs) to the stellar content of the Galactic halo is a key constraint on models for GC formation and destruction, and the mass assembly history of the Milky Way. Earlier results from APOGEE pointed to a large contribution of destroyed GCs to the stellar content of the inner halo, by as much as 25$\%$, which is an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates for more distant regions of the halo. We set out to measure the ratio between N-rich and normal halo field stars, as a function of distance, by performing density modelling of halo field populations in APOGEE DR16. Our results show that at 1.5 kpc from the Galactic Centre, N-rich stars contribute a much higher 16.8$^{+10.0}_{-7.0}$$\%$ fraction to the total stellar halo mass budget than the 2.7$^{+1.0}_{-0.8}$$\%$ ratio contributed at 10 kpc. Under the assumption that N-rich stars are former GC members that now reside in the stellar halo field, and assuming the ratio between first-and second-population GC stars being 1:2, we estimate a total contribution from disrupted GC stars of the order of 27.5$^{+15.4}_{-11.5}$$\%$ at r = 1.5 kpc and 4.2$^{+1.5}_{-1.3}$$\%$ at r = 10 kpc. Furthermore, since our methodology requires fitting a density model to the stellar halo, we integrate such density within a spherical shell from 1.5-15 kpc in radius, and find a total stellar mass arising from dissolved and/or evaporated GCs of $M_{\mathrm{GC,total}}$ = 9.6$^{+4.0}_{-2.6}$ $\times$ 10$^{7}$ M$\odot$., Comment: Paper accepted for Publication in MNRAS, correction of Fig 7

We use data of $\sim$13,000 stars from the SDSS/APOGEE survey to study the shape of the bulge MDF within the region $|\ell|\leq11^\circ$ and $|b|\leq13^\circ$, and spatially constrained to ${\rm R_{GC}\leq3.5}$ kpc. We apply Gaussian Mixture Modeling and Non-negative Matrix Factorization decomposition techniques to identify the optimal number and the properties of MDF components. We find the shape and spatial variations of the MDF (at ${\rm [Fe/H]\geq-1}$ dex) are well represented as a smoothly varying contribution of three overlapping components located at [Fe/H]=+$0.32$, $-0.17$ and $-0.66$ dex. The bimodal MDF found in previous studies is in agreement with our trimodal assessment once the limitations in sample size and individual measurement errors are taken into account. The shape of the MDF and its correlations with kinematics reveal different spatial distributions and kinematical structure for the three components co-existing in the bulge region. We confirm the consensus physical interpretation of metal-rich stars as associated with the secularly evolved disk into a boxy/peanut X-shape bar. On the other hand, metal-intermediate stars could be the product of in-situ formation at high redshift in a gas-rich environment characterized by violent and fast star formation. This interpretation would help to link a present-day structure with those observed in formation in the center of high redshift galaxies. Finally, metal-poor stars may correspond to the metal-rich tail of the population sampled at lower metallicity from the study of RR Lyrae stars. We investigate the inner regions of the Milky Way with a sample of unprecedented size and coverage thanks to APOGEE DR16 and Gaia EDR3 data. Our inner Galactic sample has more than 26,000 stars within $|X_{\rm Gal}| <5$ kpc, $|Y_{\rm Gal}| <3.5$ kpc, $|Z_{\rm Gal}| <1$ kpc, and we also make the analysis for a foreground-cleaned sub-sample of 8,000 stars more representative of the bulge-bar populations. The inner Galaxy shows a clear chemical discontinuity in key abundance ratios [$\alpha$/Fe], [C/N], and [Mn/O], probing different enrichment timescales, which suggests a star formation gap (quenching) between the high- and low-$\alpha$ populations. For the first time, we are able to fully characterize the different populations co-existing in the innermost regions of the Galaxy via joint analysis of the distributions of rotational velocities, metallicities, orbital parameters and chemical abundances. The chemo-kinematic analysis reveals the presence of the bar; of an inner thin disk; of a thick disk, and of a broad metallicity population, with a large velocity dispersion, indicative of a pressure supported component. We find and characterize chemically and kinematically a group of counter-rotating stars, which could be the result of a gas-rich merger event or just the result of clumpy star formation during the earliest phases of the early disk, which migrated into the bulge. Finally, based on the 6D information we assign stars a probability value of being on a bar orbit and find that most of the stars with large bar orbit probabilities come from the innermost 3 kpcs. Even stars with a high probability of belonging to the bar show the chemical bimodality in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] diagram. This suggests bar trapping to be an efficient mechanism, explaining why stars on bar orbits do not show a significant distinct chemical abundance ratio signature., Comment: 25 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A, in press

We conduct a quantitative analysis of the star formation history (SFH) of the Milky Way's bulge by exploiting the constraining power of its stellar [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] distribution functions. Using APOGEE data, we confirm the previously-established bimodal [Mg/Fe]--[Fe/H] distribution within 3 kpc of the inner Galaxy. Compared to that in the solar vicinity, the high-$\alpha$ population in the bulge peaks at a lower [Fe/H]. To fit these observations, we use a simple but flexible star formation framework, which assumes two distinct stages of gas accretion and star formation, and systematically evaluate a wide multi-dimensional parameter space. We find that the data favor a three-phase SFH that consists of an initial starburst, followed by a rapid star formation quenching episode and a lengthy, quiescent secular evolution phase. The metal-poor, high-$\alpha$ bulge stars ([Fe/H]<0.0 and [Mg/Fe]>0.15) are formed rapidly (<2 Gyr) during the early starburst. The density gap between the high- and low-$\alpha$ sequences is due to the quenching process. The metal-rich, low-$\alpha$ population ([Fe/H]>0.0 and [Mg/Fe]<0.15) then accumulates gradually through inefficient star formation during the secular phase. This is qualitatively consistent with the early SFH of the inner disk. Given this scenario, a notable fraction of young stars (age<5 Gyr) is expected to persist in the bulge. Combined with extragalactic observations, these results suggest that a rapid star formation quenching process is responsible for bimodal distributions in both the Milky Way's stellar populations and in the general galaxy population and thus plays a critical role in galaxy evolution., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. The spectral analysis and data products in Data Release 16 (DR16; December 2019) from the high-resolution near-infrared APOGEE-2/SDSS-IV survey are described. Compared to the previous APOGEE data release (DR14; July 2017), APOGEE DR16 includes about 200000 new stellar spectra, of which 100000 are from a new southern APOGEE instrument mounted on the 2.5 m du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. DR16 includes all data taken up to August 2018, including data released in previous data releases. All of the data have been re-reduced and re-analyzed using the latest pipelines, resulting in a total of 473307 spectra of 437445 stars. Changes to the analysis methods for this release include, but are not limited to, the use of MARCS model atmospheres for calculation of the entire main grid of synthetic spectra used in the analysis, a new method for filling "holes" in the grids due to unconverged model atmospheres, and a new scheme for continuum normalization. Abundances of the neutron capture element Ce are included for the first time. A new scheme for estimating uncertainties of the derived quantities using stars with multiple observations has been applied, and calibrated values of surface gravities for dwarf stars are now supplied. Compared to DR14, the radial velocities derived for this release more closely match those in the Gaia DR2 data base, and a clear improvement in the spectral analysis of the coolest giants can be seen. In this work we prove the following: let $K$ be a convex body in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, contained in the interior of the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and let $p\in \mathbb{R}^n$ be a point such that, from each point of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, $K$ looks centrally symmetric and $p$ appears as the center, then $K$ is a ball.

We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution. In this scenario, the formation of the inner disc is dominated by two main starburst episodes 6 Gyr apart with secular, low-level star formation activity in between. In our model, the first starburst occurs at early cosmic times (t~1 Gyr) and the second one 6 Gyr later at a cosmic time of t~7 Gyr. Both these starburst episodes are associated with gas accretion events in our model, and are quenched rapidly. The first starburst leads to the formation of the high-$\alpha$ sequence, and the second starburst leads to the formation of the metal-poor low-$\alpha$ sequence. The metal-rich low-$\alpha$ stars, instead, form during the secular evolution phase between the two bursts. Our model shows that the $\alpha$-dichotomy originates from the rapid suppression of star formation after the first starburst. The two starburst episodes are likely to be responsible for the formation of the geometric thick disc (z >1 kpc), with the old inner thick disc and the young outer thick disc forming during the first and the second starbursts, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We report on $H$-band spectra of chemically peculiar Mercury-Manganese (HgMn) stars obtained via the SDSS/APOGEE survey. As opposed to other varieties of chemically peculiar stars such as classical Ap/Bp stars, HgMn stars lack strong magnetic fields and are defined by extreme overabundances of Mn, Hg, and other heavy elements. A satisfactory explanation for the abundance patterns remains to be determined, but low rotational velocity is a requirement and involvement in binary/multiple systems may be as well. The APOGEE HgMn sample currently consists of 269 stars that were identified among the telluric standard stars as those whose metallic absorption content is limited to or dominated by the $H$-band Mn II lines. Due to the fainter magnitudes probed by the APOGEE survey as compared to past studies, only 9/269 stars in the sample were previously known as HgMn types. The 260 newly-identified HgMn stars represents a more than doubling of the known sample. At least 32% of the APOGEE sample are found to be binary or multiple systems, and from multi-epoch spectroscopy, we were able to determine orbital solutions for at least one component in 32 binaries. Many of the multi-lined systems include chemically peculiar companions, with noteworthy examples being the HgMn+Ap/Bp binary HD 5429, the HgMn+HgMn binary HD 298641, and the HgMn+BpMn+Am triple system HD 231263. As a further peculiarity, roughly half of the sample produces narrow emission in the C I 16895 angstroms line, with widths and radial velocities that match those of the Mn II lines.

The petroleum and coal models of the unidentified infrared emissions (UIE), sometimes referred also as unidentified infrared bands (UIBs) has been reviewed mainly based on the work of the authors with the inclusion of unpublished results. It is shown that the petroleum and coal model of the UIE converges and merges quite well with the MAON (Mixed Aromatic Aliphatic Organic Nanoparticles) model of the UIE. It is shown that the thermal treatment of various substrates like PAHs, alkylated PAHs but also mixed aliphatic/olefinic substrates leads invariable to carbonaceous materials matching the infrared spectrum of anthracite coal or certain petroleum fractions. Thus, the experimental thermal processing (which under space conditions could be equivalent to the expected processing by shock waves or high energy radiation) of mixed aromatic/aliphatic organic matter can be used to match also the UIE evolution. Another way to simulate the thermal/radiation processing of organic matter in space, can be achieved through the carbon arc. Simple substrates processed in this way produce carbon soot and a plethora of organic molecules. Fullerenes are found in space both through mid-infrared and optical spectroscopy and it is very likely that other complex related species such as endohedral fullerenes (i.e. fullerenes with a metal, heteroatom or molecules inside the cage) may be formed in space. After all, their formation requires the same conditions as those needed for fullerene formation provided that also a metal vapour (e.g. interstellar/circumstellar gas) is available. We have detected CH$^{+}$ and CH molecular absorption lines from the young compact planetary nebula IC 4997 from high resolution optical spectra. A high-resolution infra-red (H and K bands) spectrum provides detection of H$_2$ emission lines amongst many other lines. The H$_2$ lines provide an excitation temperature of 2100 K which may result from UV fluorescence in the envelope or from shocks formed at the interface between an expanding outflow of ionized gas and the neutral envelope ejected when the star was on the AGB. It is suggested that the CH$^+$ may result from the endothermic reaction C + H$_2$ $\rightarrow$ CH$^+$ + H. Intriguingly, CH$^{+}$ and also CH show a higher expansion velocity than H$_{\rm 2}$ emission suggesting they may be part of the post-shocked gas., Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (PASP)

Chemically tagging groups of stars born in the same birth cluster is a major goal of spectroscopic surveys. To investigate the feasibility of such strong chemical tagging, we perform a blind chemical tagging experiment on abundances measured from APOGEE survey spectra. We apply a density-based clustering algorithm to the eight dimensional chemical space defined by [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Si/Fe], [K/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [Mn/Fe], [Fe/H], and [Ni/Fe], abundances ratios which together span multiple nucleosynthetic channels. In a high quality sample of 182,538 giant stars, we detect twenty-one candidate clusters with more than fifteen members. Our candidate clusters are more chemically homogeneous than a population of non-member stars with similar [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H], even in abundances not used for tagging. Group members are consistent with having the same age and fall along a single stellar-population track in logg vs. Teff space. Each group's members are distributed over multiple kpc, and the spread in their radial and azimuthal actions increases with age. We qualitatively reproduce this increase using N-body simulations of cluster dissolution in Galactic potentials that include transient winding spiral arms. Observing our candidate birth clusters with high-resolution spectroscopy in other wavebands to investigate their chemical homogeneity in other nucleosynthetic groups will be essential to confirming the efficacy of strong chemical tagging. Our initially spatially-compact but now widely dispersed candidate clusters will provide novel limits on chemical evolution and orbital diffusion in the Galactic disc, and constraints on star formation in loosely-bound groups., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Astronomical infrared spectral features at ~6.6, 9.8 and 20 micronm have recently been suggested as being due to the planar graphene form of C24 carbon cluster. Here we report density functional theory and coupled cluster calculations on wavefunctions stability, relative energies, and infrared spectra of four different types of C24 isomers, including the graphene and fullerene forms. The types of vibrational motions under these bands are also discussed. Among the four isomers, we find that the astronomical data are best approximated by the graphene form of C24., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The Open Cluster Chemical Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey aims to constrain key Galactic dynamical and chemical evolution parameters by the construction of a large, comprehensive, uniform, infrared-based spectroscopic data set of hundreds of open clusters. This fourth contribution from the OCCAM survey presents analysis using SDSS/APOGEE DR16 of a sample of 128 open clusters, 71 of which we designate to be "high quality" based on the appearance of their color-magnitude diagram. We find the APOGEE DR16 derived [Fe/H] abundances to be in good agreement with previous high resolution spectroscopic open cluster abundance studies. Using the high quality sample, we measure Galactic abundance gradients in 16 elements, and find evolution of some of the [X/Fe] gradients as a function of age. We find an overall Galactic [Fe/H] vs R_GC gradient of $-0.068 \pm 0.001$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ over the range of $6 <$ R_GC $< 13.9$ kpc; however, we note that this result is sensitive to the distance catalog used, varying as much as 15%. We formally derive the location a break in the [Fe/H] abundance gradient as a free parameter in the gradient fit for the first time. We also measure significant Galactic gradients in O, Mg, S, Ca, Mn, Cr, Cu, Na, Al, and K, some of which are measured for the first time. Our large sample allows us to explore four well-populated age bins to explore the time evolution of gradients for a large number of elements and comment on possible implications for Galactic chemical evolution and radial migration., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication by AJ

We study the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) population of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by characterizing the individual sources in terms of the main properties of the progenitors and of the dust present in the circumstellar envelope. To this aim, we compare the combination of the spectroscopic and photometric data collected by Spitzer, complemented by additional photometric results available in the literature, with results from AGB modelling that include the description of dust formation in the wind. To allow the interpretation of a paucity stars likely evolving through the post-AGB phase, we extended the available evolutionary sequences to reach the PN phase. The main motivation of the present analysis is to prepare the future observations of the evolved stellar populations of Local Group galaxies that will be done by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), by identifying the combination of filters that will maximize the possibilities of characterizing the observed sources. The present results show that for the M-star case the best planes to be used for this purpose are the colour-magnitude ([F770W]-[F2550W], [F770W]) and (Ks-[F770W], [F770W]) planes. In these observational diagrams the sequences of low-mass stars evolving in the AGB phases before the achievement of the C-star stage and of massive AGBs experiencing hot bottom burning are clearly separated and peculiar sources, such as post-AGB, dual-dust chemistry and iron-dust stars can be easily identified

Many problems in contemporary astrophysics---from understanding the formation of black holes to untangling the chemical evolution of galaxies---rely on knowledge about binary stars. This, in turn, depends on discovery and characterization of binary companions for large numbers of different kinds of stars in different chemical and dynamical environments. Current stellar spectroscopic surveys observe hundreds of thousands to millions of stars with (typically) few observational epochs, which allows binary discovery but makes orbital characterization challenging. We use a custom Monte Carlo sampler (The Joker) to perform discovery and characterization of binary systems through radial-velocities, in the regime of sparse, noisy, and poorly sampled multi-epoch data. We use it to generate posterior samplings in Keplerian parameters for 232,531 sources released in APOGEE Data Release 16. Our final catalog contains 19,635 high-confidence close-binary (P < few years, a < few AU) systems that show interesting relationships between binary occurrence rate and location in the color-magnitude diagram. We find notable faint companions at high masses (black-hole candidates), at low masses (substellar candidates), and at very close separations (mass-transfer candidates). We also use the posterior samplings in a (toy) hierarchical inference to measure the long-period binary-star eccentricity distribution. We release the full set of posterior samplings for the entire parent sample of 232,531 stars. This set of samplings involves no heuristic "discovery" threshold and therefore can be used for myriad statistical purposes, including hierarchical inferences about binary-star populations and sub-threshold searches., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, but check out Figure 5. We present spectroscopic determinations of the effective temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities for 21 M-dwarfs observed at high-resolution (R $\sim$ 22,500) in the \textit{H}-band as part of the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey. The atmospheric parameters and metallicities are derived from spectral syntheses with 1-D LTE plane parallel MARCS models and the APOGEE atomic/molecular line list, together with up-to-date H$_{2}$O and FeH molecular line lists. Our sample range in $T_{\rm eff}$ from $\sim$ 3200 to 3800K, where eleven stars are in binary systems with a warmer (FGK) primary, while the other 10 M-dwarfs have interferometric radii in the literature. We define an $M_{K_{S}}$--Radius calibration based on our M-dwarf radii derived from the detailed analysis of APOGEE spectra and Gaia DR2 distances, as well as a mass-radius relation using the spectroscopically-derived surface gravities. A comparison of the derived radii with interferometric values from the literature finds that the spectroscopic radii are slightly offset towards smaller values, with $\Delta$ = -0.01 $\pm$ 0.02 $R{\star}$/$R_{\odot}$. In addition, the derived M-dwarf masses based upon the radii and surface gravities tend to be slightly smaller (by $\sim$5-10\%) than masses derived for M-dwarf members of eclipsing binary systems for a given stellar radius. The metallicities derived for the 11 M-dwarfs in binary systems, compared to metallicities obtained for their hotter FGK main-sequence primary stars from the literature, shows excellent agreement, with a mean difference of [Fe/H](M-dwarf - FGK primary) = +0.04 $\pm$ 0.18 dex, confirming the APOGEE metallicity scale derived here for M-dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 2 tables and 11 figures

Studies of the kinematics and chemical compositions of Galactic globular clusters (GCs) enable the reconstruction of the history of star formation, chemical evolution, and mass assembly of the Galaxy. Using the latest data release (DR16) of the SDSS/APOGEE survey, we identify 3,090 stars associated with 46 GCs. Using a previously defined kinematic association, we break the sample down into eight separate groups and examine how the kinematics-based classification maps into chemical composition space, considering only $\alpha$ (mostly Si and Mg) elements and Fe. Our results show that: (i) The loci of both in situ and accreted subgroups in chemical space match those of their field counterparts; (ii) GCs from different individual accreted subgroups occupy the same locus in chemical space. This could either mean that they share a similar origin or that they are associated with distinct satellites which underwent similar chemical enrichment histories; (iii) The chemical compositions of the GCs associated with the low orbital energy subgroup defined by Massari and collaborators is broadly consistent with an in situ origin. However, at the low metallicity end, the distinction between accreted and in situ populations is blurred; (iv) Regarding the status of GCs whose origin is ambiguous, we conclude the following: the position in Si-Fe plane suggests an in situ}origin for Liller 1 and a likely accreted origin for NGC 5904 and NGC 6388. The case of NGC 288 is unclear, as its orbital properties suggest an accretion origin, its chemical composition suggests it may have formed in situ., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. We combine high-resolution spectroscopic data from APOGEE-2 Survey Data Release 16 (DR16) with broad-band photometric data from several sources, as well as parallaxes from {\it Gaia} Data Release 2 (DR2). Using the Bayesian isochrone-fitting code {\tt StarHorse}, we derive distances, extinctions and astrophysical parameters for around 388,815 APOGEE stars, achieving typical distance uncertainties of $\sim 6\%$ for APOGEE giants, $\sim 2\%$ for APOGEE dwarfs, as well as extinction uncertainties of $\sim 0.07$ mag when all photometric information is available, and $\sim 0.17$ mag if optical photometry is missing. {\tt StarHorse} uncertainties vary with the input spectroscopic catalogue, with the available photometry, and with the parallax uncertainties. To illustrate the impact of our results, we show that, thanks to {\it Gaia} DR2 and the now larger sky coverage of APOGEE-2 (including APOGEE-South), we obtain an extended map of the Galactic plane, providing unprecedented coverage of the disk close to the Galactic mid-plane ($|Z_{Gal}|<1$ kpc) from the Galactic Centre out to $R_{\rm Gal}\sim 20$ kpc. The improvements in statistics as well as distance and extinction uncertainties unveil the presence of the bar in stellar density, as well as the striking chemical duality in the innermost regions of the disk, now clearly extending to the inner bulge. Using 3D positions and kinematics of stars relative to the Sagittarius (Sgr) orbital plane and angular momentum, we identify 166 Sgr stream members observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) that also have Gaia DR2 astrometry. This sample of 63/103 stars in the Sgr trailing/leading arm are combined with an APOGEE sample of 710 members of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal core (385 of them newly presented here) to establish differences of 0.6 dex in median metallicity and 0.1 dex in [$\alpha$/Fe] between our Sgr core and dynamically older stream samples. Mild chemical gradients are found internally along each arm, but these steepen when anchored by core stars. With a model of Sgr tidal disruption providing estimated dynamical ages (i.e., stripping times) for each stream star, we find a mean metallicity gradient of 0.12 +/- 0.03 dex/Gyr for stars stripped from Sgr over time. For the first time, an [$\alpha$/Fe] gradient is also measured within the stream, at 0.02 +/- 0.01 dex/Gyr using magnesium abundances and 0.04 +/- 0.01 dex/Gyr using silicon, which imply that the Sgr progenitor had significant radial abundance gradients. We discuss the magnitude of those inferred gradients and their implication for the nature of the Sgr progenitor within the context of the current family of Milky Way satellite galaxies, and suggest that more sophisticated Sgr models are needed to properly interpret the growing chemodynamical detail we have on the Sgr system., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the Fe, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ce and Nd abundances of 2283 red giant stars in 31 globular clusters from high-resolution spectra observed in both the northern and southern hemisphere by the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey. This unprecedented homogeneous dataset, largest to date, allows us to discuss the intrinsic Fe spread, the shape and statistics of Al-Mg and N-C anticorrelations as a function of cluster mass, luminosity, age and metallicity for all 31 clusters. We find that the Fe spread does not depend on these parameters within our uncertainties including cluster metallicity, contradicting earlier observations. We do not confirm the metallicity variations previously observed in M22 and NGC 1851. Some clusters show a bimodal Al distribution, while others exhibit a continuous distribution as has been previously reported in the literature. We confirm more than 2 populations in $\omega$ Cen and NGC 6752, and find new ones in M79. We discuss the scatter of Al by implementing a correction to the standard chemical evolution of Al in the Milky Way. After correction, its dependence on cluster mass is increased suggesting that the extent of Al enrichment as a function of mass was suppressed before the correction. We observe a turnover in the Mg-Al anticorrelation at very low Mg in $\omega$ Cen, similar to the pattern previously reported in M15 and M92. $\omega$ Cen may also have a weak K-Mg anticorrelation, and if confirmed, it would be only the third cluster known to show such a pattern., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 31 pages, 24 figures, 7 tables. This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar").
