A survey of 1810 low-income women in Hawaii ages 15-50 showed that 83% knew at least one of the effective methods of contraception 85% knew of an adequate source of contraception and 50% knew of a source of free supplies. Over half wanted more contraceptive information. Ideal planned family size was 4 spaced 2 years apart. 28% used contraceptives; 38% were pregnant infertile or sterile and did not need contraceptives while 32% did not wish to use contraceptives or "never got to it". 2% did not respond. Purpose of the survey was to provide data on knowledge attitudes and practice of birth control and to produce information on the need and desire of these women for services.

The transformation that is taking place within design education, while giving evidence of hopeful progress, is at the same time getting tangled up in the loose ends of its own progressiveness. For one thing we are continually asking ourselves where we are going before we have determined where our beginnings lie, and before this, the reason for beginning at all. It is possible, unfortunately, with the help of the well planned programs to produce passable designs without ever bothering to determine whether or not the effort has any roots.

When I look back upon those shadowy afternoons of long ago as I wandered through the soft and quiet light of the Louvre, the one thing that comes back to me in total recall is the dominating presence of the work of art. I have only a hazy memory of architectural tangibles, of walls and doors and light sources, or the ways and means employed in the installation of the works on view. I remember only individual, magical illusions, existing in an anonymous atmosphere which seemed to be created not for the paintings, but by the paintings. The diffused light from above (I suppose there were skylights) did not illuminate the paintings but helped them in their task of self-illumination. The spaces of the rooms were generous, dark and recessive. I do not recall being surrounded by walls with paintings. I only remember with undiminishing vividness the presence of great works of art.

Whatever else you may say about it, the stated title of our discussion this morning has an air of being very sure of itself. It tells us that there are traditional and modern ways of doing things and it implies that some of us are dedicated to one way and some to the other; that we each have definite reasons for being what we are and that these two sets of reasons are mutually exclusive; finally that there is a clear basis for rational debate.
