The use of optical metrology techniques in process control for microelectronic manufacturing has become widespread. These techniques are fast and non-destructive, allowing a higher sampling rate than non-optical methods like scanning electron or atomic force microscopy. One drawback of most optical metrology tools is the requirement that special measurement structures be fabricated in the scribe line between chips. This poses significant limitations regarding the characterization of lithography processes that may be overcome via in-chip measurements. In this paper we present experimental results for an in-chip optical metrology technique that allows direct measurement of both critical dimensions and overlay displacement errors in the DRAM manufacturing process. This technique does not require special target structures and is performed on the actual semiconductor devices.

Objective: This study investigated whether the antiangiogenic factors' concentrations differ according to the clinical manifestations of preeclampsia., Methods: This study included 62 preeclampsia and compared the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), soluble endoglin (sEng), and placental growth factor (PlGF) concentrations among patients with different clinical manifestations of preeclampsia. We also compared the patients with preeclampsia to 62 controls matched by age, gestational age, and parity after 20 weeks of gestation., Results: The sEng concentrations were significantly elevated in early-onset than in late-onset preeclampsia (105.4 +/- 37.9 vs 66.3 +/- 36.0 ng/mL, p = 0.0008). Moreover, the sEng levels were also higher in severe preeclampsia compared to mild (42.5 +/- 31.0 vs 79.2 +/- 38.6 ng/mL, p = 0.0013) and in the small for gestational age (SGA) group compared to the group without SGA (68.3 +/- 39.3 vs 85.7 +/- 38.2 ng/mL, p = 0.0273). The sFlt-1 levels, however, did not reveal significant difference according to the onset-time, severity, and presence of SGA. The antiangiogenic factors' concentrations were not related with the degree of hypertension or proteinuria., Conclusion: Altered antiangiogenic factors might be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia with synergistic, but different roles. Especially, sEng may be more related with early and severe preeclampsia., ((c) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Impaired placento-fetal communication is a coherent symptom of exaggerated pre-eclampsia. The impact of the cellular expression of different glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in this event on the placenta in pre-eclampsia is still obscure. This is the first study aimed at discovering the relationship between structural alterations of different sulfated GAGs at the molecular level and the development of pre-eclampsia in inflicted placenta. Sulfated GAGs were isolated and purified from control and pre-eclampsia placentas. The amount and the molecular weight of GAG in each tissue sample were measured. The polydispersity of the recovered GAG samples were determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The disaccharide composition of chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate were deduced by chondroitinase and heparinase depolymerization followed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The in vivo sulfo-modulation of GAGs in pre-eclampsia and control placenta were examined using RT-PCR to determine the transcription levels of different sulfotransferases involved in GAG biosynthesis. Marked differences in GAG sulfation patterns and mRNA level of encoding selected GAG O-sulfotransferases were observed in pre-eclampsia. These data suggest a linkage between pre-eclampsia and the observed alterations in placental GAGs and could provide new insights about the modulating role of GAGs in the development and the severity of placental pre-eclampsia.

Studies on the vitamin E status of Korean children are lacking. Dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of tocopherols of healthy 2- to 6-year-olds living in Kwangju, Republic of Korea, were determined and their vitamin E status evaluated. Subjects included 66 girls and 65 boys, with 21-32 subjects per age group. Subjects' intakes were recorded by a trained interviewer for foods eaten at preschool/kindergarten; otherwise, three consecutive 24-hour food recalls were obtained from parents. Plasma tocopherol concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Intakes of energy and total monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats were significantly different (p < 0.05) among age groups, not gender, with 2- and 3-year-olds having lower intakes. Alpha- and gamma-tocopherol intakes were similar by age and gender. Sixty-seven percent consumed less than the Korean Adequate Intakes for vitamin E, and 77% had Alpha-tocopherol intakes less than USA/Canadian Estimated Average Requirements. Plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations, but not gamma-tocopherol, were significantly higher (p < 0.05) for 2-year-olds. Two-thirds of subjects had plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations less than 12 micromol/L, which is indicative of vitamin E inadequacy in adults; guidelines for children do not exist. Many of the Korean children had inadequate intakes and likely inadequate plasma concentrations of vitamin E.

Preeclampsia (PE), a pregnancy-specific syndrome of hypertension, proteinuria, and other systemic disturbances, is a state of widespread endothelial dysfunction secondary to defective placentation. Morphologically, the current data displayed degenerative and apoptotic changes in the mitochondria and villous trophoblasts of preeclamptic placenta. To reveal the superimposing alterations in placental proteins that might explain the pathophysiology of PE, we performed 2-DE MALDI-TOF MS/MS proteomics analysis of differentially expressed placental proteins with placenta from eight normal and eight preeclamptic pregnancies. The identified proteins were confirmed by Western blot analysis. We also performed morphologic evaluation of preeclamptic placentas under both electron and light microscopy. The results disclosed the marked overexpression of chaperonin 60, GST, VDAC, ERp29, and cathepsin D in PE. These proteomics findings clearly suggest the possible cellular battle against mitochondria-originated oxidative stress during PE that either end up with recovery or apoptosis. These results provide a better understanding of proteomic alterations and may help in clarification of stress-related changes in preeclamptic placentas., (Copyright © 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of retinol and carotenoids were estimated in assessing the vitamin A status of young children in Kwangju, Republic of Korea. Three consecutive 24-hour food recalls and fasting blood samples were obtained from 123 healthy children (58 boys, 65 girls), aged 2-6 years. The daily vitamin A intake (mean +/- SD) was 355.9 +/- 178.1 microg retinol equivalents or 239.0 +/- 111.2 microg retinol activity equivalents. Provitamin A carotenoid intakes were 1211.2 +/- 840.0 microg/day beta-carotene, 234.6 +/- 231.7 microg/day alpha-carotene, and 149.1 +/- 160.7 microg/day beta-cryptoxanthin. Approximately 15-26% of subjects consumed < Korean Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) for vitamin A; whereas, 57-64% consumed < EAR for vitamin A for USA/Canadians. The mean plasma retinol concentration was 1.108 +/- 0.244 micromol/L. There were no significant correlations between intakes and plasma concentrations of retinol and carotenoids. Only 2.4% of children were vitamin A-deficient based on having plasma retinol concentrations <0.70 micromol/L. Plasma retinol concentrations of 42.3% of subjects were 0.70 - <1.05 micromol/L, which is considered indicative of potentially suboptimal vitamin A status. Therefore, some children may be at risk of inadequate vitamin A status in Kwangju, Republic of Korea.

Background/aims: Alcohol may be a cocarcinogen in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. We investigated the effect of alcohol on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in liver cirrhosis (LC) caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV)., Methods: All patients with LC or HCC associated with HBV or alcohol, admitted between March 2001 and June 2005, were included. Patients were divided into three groups according to the etiology of LC: Alcohol (AL), HBV, or HBV alcohol (HBV AL). Age and laboratory data at the enrollment of study were analyzed. The logistic regression coefficiency for the prevalence of HCC was calculated by using variables such as age, gender, serologic markers, and etiology of LC., Results: In LC patients (n=342), the proportions of AL, HBV, and HBV AL groups were 44%, 39%, and 17%, respectively. The proportions of HCC in AL, HBV and HBV AL groups were 17%, 55%, and 76%, respectively. Age at the diagnosis of HCC was younger in HBV AL than in AL group (p=0.036). In logistic regression analysis for the risk factor of HCC, odds ratio of age was 1.056 (p0.001). Odds ratios of HBV and HBV AL group comparing AL were 8.449 (p0.001) and 17.609 (p0.001), respectively. Therefore, old age and chronic alcohol intake in patients with HBsAg were the risk factors of HCC., Conclusions: Chronic alcohol intake may be an additive factor for the development of HCC in patient with LC caused by HBV. However, a prospective cohort study is needed to confirm these findings.

Objective: To describe an instance of complete chorion-amnion membrane separation with fetal restrictive dermopathy in two consecutive pregnancies., Methods: We performed prenatal ultrasounds in two consecutive pregnancies and evaluated gross and microscopic postnatal findings., Results: The first pregnancy ended at 32 weeks of gestation with spontaneous chorioamniotic membrane separation and preterm premature rupture of membranes. The mother delivered an abnormal male infant with generalized fixed joint contractures, rigid and shiny skin, skin laceration around the neck, a rounded and opened mouth, and palpebral conjunctival eversion. The subsequent pregnancy was also complicated by spontaneous complete chorioamniotic membrane separation, oligohydramnios, and fetal growth restriction at 26 + 3 weeks of gestation. A immaturely born second baby also carried multiple anomalies similar to those of the first. Both infants died shortly after birth. After microscopic examination of the skin, we diagnosed the infant as restrictive dermopathy., Conclusions: Complete separation of the chorion-amnion membrane may be regarded as a serious prenatal condition. Restrictive dermopathy or skin disorders caused by defects in collagen or elastic tissue metabolism may be one of the many causes of chorion-amnion separation., (Copyright (c) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Objective: This study sought to determine and evaluate the intakes and plasma concentrations of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), gamma-tocopherol, vitamin C, selenium, and carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene) of nonsupplemented boys and girls, 4 to 8 years old, of Latino immigrants living in rural Nebraska., Design: Dietary intakes of the Latino children were estimated. Their plasma samples (fasting) were analyzed for vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, and carotenoid concentrations. Data were evaluated by sex., Subjects: The subjects were a convenience sample of 4- to 8-year-old (n=29), apparently healthy, nonsupplemented children of Latino immigrants living in rural Nebraska., Statistical Analysis: Sex differences in parameter values were determined using general linear models; Pearson r was used for determining correlations., Results: No significant differences in parameter values were observed by sex, with the exception of plasma lutein/zeaxanthin concentration. The majority (69%) had plasma vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) concentrations<0.516 mg/dL (12 micromol/L), which is indicative of vitamin E inadequacy, and over half (59%) reported consuming less than the Estimated Average Requirement for vitamin E. All subjects had plasma vitamin C and selenium concentrations indicative of adequacy (>0.41 mg/dL or >23 micromol/L, and >6.32 microg/dL or >0.8 micromol/L, respectively), and consumed at least the Recommended Dietary Allowances for these nutrients. The plasma carotenoid concentrations of the children may be useful as norms., Conclusions: These children of Latino immigrants who did not take supplements had low plasma vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) concentrations but normal plasma vitamin C and selenium concentrations., Implications: Dietetics professionals and others involved in health care need to work with Latino immigrant parents so that their children consume adequate amounts of vitamin E.

Typical eating and exercise habits of a group of lower-level (freshmen/sophomores, n=144) and upper-level (juniors/seniors, n=114) students, 19 to 25 years of age, attending a midwestern university were compared. Both groups reported similar snacking practices, nonalcoholic beverage consumption, places of meal consumption, factors influencing food choices, duration and frequency of various types of physical activity, and places of physical performance, with few exceptions. Significant differences between groups were observed for typical afternoon snack consumption, frequency of eating in university cafeterias, typical time spent walking, typical frequency of performing other aerobic activities, and factors that most influenced their physical activity habits. Few differences existed in typical eating and physical activity habits of lower- and upper-level students.

We described a 39-yr-old asian female who was initially diagnosed with prolactinoma and presented with increase nervousness and weight loss. Laboratory evaluation revealed an inappropriately normal TSH level with elevated free T4, total T3, alpha-subunit and prolactin level. The alpha-subunit/TSH molar ratio was 4. MRI showed a macroadenoma extending to the suprasellar cistern. Treatment was begun with propylthiouracil and bromocriptine. After 5 months of therapy, she became pregnant. At 27 weeks of gestation, she developed headache and decreased visual acuity in her left eye. MRI showed a slightly increase in tumor size compressing the optic chaiasm. Transphenoid macroadenectomy was performed with immediate relief of the visual field abnormality. At 39 weeks gestation a baby with no malformations was delivered. This is the second case report of TSH secreting pituitary adenoma which was exarcerbated during pregnancy. In contrast to the first case, our case was managed with both surgical and medical approach. The judicious use of both medical and surgical therapy can result in a successful outcome to mother and fetus in a patient with TSH secreting pituitary adenoma.
