Eighteen prospectively ascertained cases of brother x sister and father x daughter matings are described. A series of illegitimate children whose mothers were as nearly matched as possible to the incest mothers for intelligence, age, height, weight, and socioeconomic conditions were used as controls. Six of the children of incest had died or were found to have major defects on follow-up 6 months after birth date, whereas one of the comparison children was so classified. This is a larger inbreeding effect than would be predicted on the basis of published findings from marriages of first cousins. The series is published at this time to encourage others to collect these important, but rare and elusive data, in a prospective, controlled manner.

T HE date of Lope de Vega's birth has always been stated as November 25, 1562. Since no documentary record of his birth has ever been found, his biographers have accepted the word of Juan P6rez de Montalvain, who gives that date in his Fama p6stuma: "Nacio en Madrid, en casas de Geronimo de Soto, en la Puerta de Guadalaxara, a veinte y cinco de Nouiembre, afio de quinientos y sesenta y dos, dia de san Lope, Obispo de Verona. Bautiz6se en seis de Diziembre. .. .,,"1 In this study we propose to show that Lope was born on December 2 (Old Style), and that the date of November 25 is the result of a mistake in identification.

Colic occurs in 11.4% of low birth weight infants. The usual onset is within two weeks of the expected birth date, regardless of gestational age at birth. Birth order does not play a role in the distribution of colic. White low birth weight infants are more likely to develop colic than Negro low birth weight infants. Although colic may persist for several months, the infants are generally healthy and develop normally.

This case is being reported because of the age (7 months), history and rapid recovery of the patient. M. N., a girl, was admitted to the Home for Friendless Babies, Aug. 17, 1930. Her birth date was Feb. 17, 1930. She was a well nourished, breast fed baby, weighing 17 pounds 3 ounces (7.8 Kg.). The family history was negative except that the mother had had a number of abortions. The Wassermann reaction on both the father and the mother was negative. The mother was also admitted, continuing to nurse the infant. The baby had a steady gain in weight until October 1, at which time she weighed 20 pounds 2 ounces (9 Kg.); she then began losing weight. This loss, however, was thought to be due to an inadequate milk supply, as the child was apparently normal. She was given supplementary feedings of cow's milk (boiled three minutes), diluted
