Determining the number of cases in an epidemic is fundamental to properly evaluate several disease features of high relevance for public health policies such as mortality, morbidity or hospitalization rates. Surveillance efforts are however incomplete especially at the early stage of an outbreak due to the ongoing learning process about the disease characteristics. An example of this is represented by the number of H1N1 influenza cases in Mexico during the first months of the current pandemic. Several estimates using backtrack calculation based on imported cases from Mexico in other countries point out that the actual number of cases was likely orders of magnitude larger than the number of confirmed cases. Realistic computational models fed with the best available estimates of the basic disease parameters can provide an ab-initio calculation of the number of cases in Mexico as other countries. Here we use the Global Epidemic and Mobility (GLEaM) model to obtain estimates of the size of the epidemic in Mexico as well as of imported cases at the end of April and beginning of May. We find that the reference range for the number of cases in Mexico on April 30th is 121,000 to 1,394,000 in good agreement with the recent estimates by Lipsitch et al. [M. Lipsitch, PloS One 4:e6895 (2009)]. The number of imported cases from Mexico in several countries is found to be in good agreement with the surveillance data.

A Portuguese questionnaire was developed to assess the history of depressive symptoms. The Depressive History Questionnaire was based on the Depressive Experience Subscale from the Thalbourne Manic Depressiveness Scale, which was translated into Portuguese. The Depressive History Questionnaire was administered to 459 college students. Female students scored significantly higher than male students. Cronbach alpha was .64. Principal component analysis confirmed that the questionnaire measures only one dimension. Confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the fit of the one-factor model. The Depressive History Questionnaire correlated positively and significantly with the Portuguese versions of both the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Depressive Personality Disorder Inventory.

The impact of elevated carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) on the quality of berries, must, and red wine (with special reference to volatile composition, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity) made from Touriga Franca, a native grape variety of Vitis vinifera L. for Port and Douro wine manufacturing grown in the Demarcated Region of Douro, was investigated during 2005 and 2006. Grapevines were grown either in open-top chambers (OTC) with ambient (365 +/- 10 ppm) or elevated (500 +/-16 ppm) [CO2] or in an outside plot. In general, the increase of [CO2] did not affect berry characteristics, especially the total anthocyan and tannin concentrations. However, the total anthocyan and polyphenol concentrations of the red wine were inhibited under elevated [CO2]. The antioxidant capacity of the wines was determined by DPPH, ABTS, and TBARS assays and, despite the low concentrations of phenolics, the elevated [CO2] did not significantly change the total antioxidant capacity of the red wines. Thirty-five volatile compounds belonging to seven chemical groups were identified: C6 alcohols, higher alcohols, esters, terpenols, carbonyl compounds, acids, volatile phenols, and C13 norisoprenoids. Generally, the same volatile compounds were present in all of the wines, but the relative levels varied among the treatments. The effect of elevated [CO2] was significant because it was detected as an increase in ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, isoamyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl octanoate, butyric acid, and isovaleric acid concentrations and a decrease in ethyl acetate concentration when compared to wines produced in ambient [CO2] in 2005. In elevated [CO2], wines from 2006 had lower methionol, 1-octanol, and 4-ethylguaiacol and higher ethyl lactate and linalool concentrations. The increase in [CO2] did not significantly affect C6 alcohols, citronellol, carbonyl compounds, and beta-damascenone concentrations. This study showed that the predicted rise in [CO2] did not produce negative effects on the quality of grapes and red wine. Although some of the compounds were slightly affected, the red wine quality remained almost unaffected.

The increasing ubiquity of Internet access and the frequency with which people interact with it raise the possibility of using the Web to better observe, understand, and monitor several aspects of human social behavior. Web sites with large numbers of frequently returning users are ideal for this task. If these sites belong to companies or universities, their usage patterns can furnish information about the working habits of entire populations. In this work, we analyze the properly anonymized logs detailing the access history to Emory University's Web site. Emory is a medium-sized university located in Atlanta, Georgia. We find interesting structure in the activity patterns of the domain and study in a systematic way the main forces behind the dynamics of the traffic. In particular, we find that linear preferential linking, priority-based queuing, and the decay of interest for the contents of the pages are the essential ingredients to understand the way users navigate the Web.

Most real-world networks are weighted graphs with the weight of the edges reflecting the relative importance of the connections. In this work, we study nondegree dependent correlations between edge weights, generalizing thus the correlations beyond the degree dependent case. We propose a simple method to introduce weight-weight correlations in topologically uncorrelated graphs. This allows us to test different measures to discriminate between the different correlation types and to quantify their intensity. We also discuss here the effect of weight correlations on the transport properties of the networks, showing that positive correlations dramatically improve transport. Finally, we give two examples of real-world networks (social and transport graphs) in which weight-weight correlations are present.

Arterial complications after liver transplantation are frequent. Hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT) is usually associated with biliary complications. Herein we have reported a case of a patient who was admitted for jaundice, itch, and elevated aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels at 6 weeks after liver transplantation. HAT associated with a biloma was diagnosed and an urgent operation performed requiring a new biliodigestive anastomosis technique. Fourteen months after the first transplant, the patient was retransplanted. The operation performed may be an alternative to treat biliary complications due to late HAT.

Malignant hyperthermia is an autosomal dominant disorder with incomplete penetrance and variable expression. This syndrome is characterized by a hypermetabolic response to all commonly used inhalational anesthetics and depolarizing muscle relaxants. It can happen during or after the anesthesia. We describe a case of malignant hyperthermia during orthotopic liver transplantation. Our patient was a 48-year-old man, born in Brazil but with European ascendance, who developed malignant hyperthermia associated with the use of isoflurane. He was treated with dantrolene, which caused hepatic graft dysfunction. It is important that transplant teams be able to recognize and treat this complication.

In the present work we evaluated both the mutagenicity and antimutagenicity of the Pothomorphe umbellata root extract (PUE) and its isolated active principle, the 4-nerolidylcatechol (4-NC), in bone marrow cells of mice using the micronucleus test. Swiss male mice were orally treated for 4 days with PUE (200, 100 or 50mg/kg/day) or 4-NC (50, 25 or 12.5mg/kg/day) prior to exposition with a single dose (200mg/kg) of cyclophosphamide (CP), 24h after the end of the treatment. The results demonstrated that the PUE and 4-NC did not have any mutagenic effect on mouse bone marrow cells; quite the opposite, there was a protective effect against genotoxicity induced by cyclophosphamide. Taken together, under the conditions tested herein, mice treated with PUE and 4-NC showed, in a dose-dependent manner, protective effect against CP-induced genotoxicity. Due to their ability to prevent chromosomal damage, with apparent low toxicity and cost, PUE or pure 4-NC are likely to open a field of interest concerning their possible use in clinical applications.

Belzer and Collins are solutions used in liver transplantation. The purpose of this study was to compare liver function after utilization of two different schemes of graft preservation using both solutions. Between December 2004 and September 2005, 43 liver transplantations were performed. Twenty-three of these used 2 L of Collins solution and 2 L of Belzer solution as the preservation solution. The others used three L of Collins and 1 L of Belzer solution as the preservation solution. The cold ischemia time of both groups was similar. We analyzed liver function using the serum ALT, AST, bilirubin and international normalized ratio. On the first day after the transplantation, the level of international normalized ratio of the group of patients that used 1 L of Belzer was significantly higher than the other group (P<.05). The levels of ALT, AST, and bilirubin were not different on day 7 after transplantation. We concluded that using only 1 L of Belzer solution is as efficient with the advantage that it is less expensive.

Radial profiles of the parallel-radial Reynolds stress component, proportional to the cross correlation between parallel and radial fluctuating velocities, have been measured in the plasma boundary region of the TJ-II stellarator. Experimental results show the existence of significant parallel turbulent forces at plasma densities above the threshold value to trigger perpendicular sheared flows. This finding provides the first experimental evidence of the role of parallel turbulence forces on edge momentum redistribution in fusion devices.

Water relations, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, light canopy transmittance, leaf photosynthetic pigments and metabolites and fruit quality indices of cherry cultivars 'Burlat', 'Summit' and 'Van' growing on five rootstocks with differing size-controlling potentials that decrease in the order: Prunus avium L. > CAB 11E > Maxma 14 > Gisela 5 > Edabriz, were studied during 2002 and 2003. Rootstock genotype affected all physiological parameters. Cherry cultivars grafted on invigorating rootstocks had higher values of midday stem water potential (Psi(MD)), net CO(2) assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (g(s)), intercellular CO(2) concentration (C(i)) and maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (F(v)/F(m)) than cultivars grafted on dwarfing rootstocks. The Psi(MD) was positively correlated with A, g(s) and C(i). Moreover, A was positively correlated with g(s), and the slopes of the linear regression increased from invigorating to dwarfing rootstocks, indicating a stronger regulation of photosynthesis by stomatal aperture in trees on dwarfing Edabriz and Gisela 5. The effect of rootstock genotype was also statistically significant for leaf photosynthetic pigments, whereas metabolite concentrations and fruit physicochemical characteristics were more dependent on cultivar genotype. Among cultivars, 'Burlat' leaves had the lowest concentrations of photosynthetic pigments, but were richest in total soluble sugars, starch and total phenols. Compared with the other cultivars, 'Summit' had heavier fruits, independent of the rootstock. 'Burlat' cherries were less firm and had lower concentrations of soluble sugars and a lower titratable acidity than 'Van' cherries. Nevertheless, 'Van' cherries had lower lightness, chroma and hue angle, representing redder and darker cherries, compared with 'Summit' fruits. In general, Psi(MD) was positively correlated with fruit mass and A was negatively correlated with lightness and chroma. These results demonstrate that: (1) water relations and photosynthesis of sweet cherry tree are mainly influenced by the rootstock genotype; (2) different physicochemical characteristics observed in cherries of the three cultivars suggest that regulation of fruit quality was mainly dependent on the cultivar genotype, although the different size-controlling rootstocks also had a significant effect.

The phenolic compounds hydroxycinnamates, anthocyanins, flavonols, and flavan-3-ols of sweet cherry cultivars Burlat, Saco, Summit, and Van harvested in 2001 and 2002 were quantified by HPLC-DAD. Phenolics were analyzed at partially ripe and ripe stages and during storage at 15 +/- 5 degrees C (room temperature) and 1-2 degrees C (cool temperature). Neochlorogenic and p-coumaroylquinic acids were the main hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, but chlorogenic acid was also identified in all cultivars. The 3-glucoside and 3-rutinoside of cyanidin were the major anthocyanins. Peonidin and pelargonidin 3-rutinosides were the minor anthocyanins, and peonidin 3-glucoside was also present in cvs. Burlat and Van. Epicatechin was the main monomeric flavan-3-ol with catechin present in smaller amounts in all cultivars. The flavonol rutin was also detected. Cultivar Saco contained the highest amounts of phenolics [227 mg/100 g of fresh weight (fw)] and cv. Van the lowest (124 mg/100 g of fw). Phenolic acid contents generally decreased with storage at 1-2 degrees C and increased with storage at 15 +/- 5 degrees C. Anthocyanin levels increased at both storage temperatures. In cv. Van the anthocyanins increased up to 5-fold during storage at 15 +/- 5 degrees C (from 47 to 230 mg/100 g of fw). Flavonol and flavan-3-ol contents remained quite constant. For all cultivars the levels of phenolic acids were higher in 2001 and the anthocyanin levels were higher in 2002, which suggest a significant influence of climatic conditions on these compounds.

The dynamical coupling between turbulent transport and parallel flows has been investigated in the plasma boundary region of the Joint European Torus tokamak. Experimental results show that there is a dynamical relationship between transport and parallel flows. As the size of transport events increases, parallel flows also increase. These results show that turbulent transport can drive parallel flows in the plasma boundary of fusion plasmas. This new type of measurement is an important element to unravel the overall picture connecting radial transport and flows in fusion plasmas.

We have studied the island-size distribution and spatial correlation function of an island growth model under the effect of an elastic interaction of the form 1/r(3). The mass distribution P(n)(t) that was obtained presents a pronounced peak that widens with the increase of the total coverage of the system, theta. The presence of this peak is an indication of the self-organization of the system, since it demonstrates that some sizes are more frequent than others. We have treated exactly the energy of the system using periodic boundary conditions that were used in the Monte Carlo simulations. A discussion about the effect of different factors is presented.
