Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) used as semiconducting channels induce high mobility, thermal conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and chemical stability in field-effect, thin-film transistors (TFTs). However, the contact interfaces in CNT-TFTs have contact resistances that are difficult to reduce; this contact resistance can eventually limit the overall performance of CNT-TFTs. The contact interface between the source/drain electrodes and CNTs, especially for those CNT-TFTs in which the channel comprises randomly networked CNTs, plays a particularly dominant role in determining the performance and degree of variability in CNT-TFTs. However, no studies have reported a determination method that individually extracts each contact resistance at the source/drain electrodes. The present work presents an efficient method for directly determining the contact interfaces in CNT-TFTs by extracting each contact resistance produced at the source (R S ) and drain (R D ) electrodes. Moreover, we comprehensively simulated the randomly networked CNTs using an in-depth Monte-Carlo method, which provides an efficient method for visualizing the uniformity of a CNT network with various controllable CNT parameters. The proposed method provides guidance and a means for optimizing the design of the CNT network channel in CNT-TFTs and additional insights into improving the performance of CNT-TFTs.

Purpose: To compare the accuracy and required time for image fusion of real-time ultrasound (US) with pre-procedural magnetic resonance (MR) images between positioning auto-registration and manual registration for percutaneous radiofrequency ablation or biopsy of hepatic lesions., Methods: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board, and all patients gave written informed consent. Twenty-two patients (male/female, n = 18/n = 4; age, 61.0 ± 7.7 years) who were referred for planning US to assess the feasibility of radiofrequency ablation (n = 21) or biopsy (n = 1) for focal hepatic lesions were included. One experienced radiologist performed the two types of image fusion methods in each patient. The performance of auto-registration and manual registration was evaluated. The accuracy of the two methods, based on measuring registration error, and the time required for image fusion for both methods were recorded using in-house software and respectively compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test., Results: Image fusion was successful in all patients. The registration error was not significantly different between the two methods (auto-registration: median, 3.75 mm; range, 1.0-15.8 mm vs. manual registration: median, 2.95 mm; range, 1.2-12.5 mm, p = 0.242). The time required for image fusion was significantly shorter with auto-registration than with manual registration (median, 28.5 s; range, 18-47 s, vs. median, 36.5 s; range, 14-105 s, p = 0.026)., Conclusion: Positioning auto-registration showed promising results compared with manual registration, with similar accuracy and even shorter registration time.

Recent electronic applications require an efficient computing system that can perform data processing with limited energy consumption. Inspired by the massive parallelism of the human brain, a neuromorphic system (hardware neural network) may provide an efficient computing unit to perform such tasks as classification and recognition. However, the implementation of synaptic devices (i.e., the essential building blocks for emulating the functions of biological synapses) remains challenging due to their uncontrollable weight update protocol and corresponding uncertain effects on the operation of the system, which can lead to a bottleneck in the continuous design and optimization. Here, we demonstrate a synaptic transistor based on highly purified, preseparated 99% semiconducting carbon nanotubes, which can provide adjustable weight update linearity and variation margin. The pattern recognition efficacy is validated using a device-to-system level simulation framework. The enlarged margin rather than the linear weight update can enhance the fault tolerance of the recognition system, which improves the recognition accuracy.

Objective: The aims of this work were to determine whether game-based constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is effective at improving balance ability in patients with stroke, and to provide clinical knowledge of game-based training that allows application of CIMT to the lower extremities., Design: Thirty-six patients with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to game-based CIMT (n = 12), general game-based training (n = 12), and conventional (n = 12) groups. All interventions were conducted 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The static balance control and weight-bearing symmetry were assessed, and the Functional Reach Test (FRT), modified Functional Reach Test (mFRT), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test were performed to evaluate balance ability., Results: All 3 groups showed significant improvement in anterior-posterior axis (AP-axis) distance, sway area, weight-bearing symmetry, FRT, mFRT, and TUG test after the intervention (P < 0.05). Post hoc analysis revealed significant differences in AP-axis, and sway area, weight-bearing symmetry of the game-based CIMT group compared with the other group (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Although the general game-based training and the game-based CIMT both improved on static and dynamic balance ability, game-based CIMT had a larger effect on static balance control, weight-bearing symmetry, and side-to-side weight shift.

Three-dimensional (3-D) fin-structured carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNT-FETs) with purified 99.9% semiconducting CNTs were demonstrated on a large scale 8 in. silicon wafer. The fabricated 3-D CNT-FETs take advantage of the 3-D geometry and exhibit enhanced electrostatic gate controllability and superior charge transport. A trigated structure surrounding the randomly networked single-walled CNT channel was formed on a fin-like 3-D silicon frame, and as a result, the effective packing density increased to almost 600 CNTs/μm. Additionally, highly sensitive controllability of the threshold voltage (V TH ) was achieved using a thin back gate oxide in the same silicon frame to control power consumption and enhance performance. Our results are expected to broaden the design margin of CNT-based circuit architectures for versatile applications. The proposed 3-D CNT-FETs can potentially provide a desirable alternative to silicon based nanoelectronics and a blueprint for furthering the practical use of emerging low-dimensional materials other than CNTs.

A key requirement for using memristors in functional circuits is a predictive physical model to capture the resistive switching behavior, which shall be compact enough to be implemented using a circuit simulator. Although a number of memristor models have been developed, most of these models (i.e., first-order memristor models) have utilized only a one-state-variable. However, such simplification is not adequate for accurate modeling because multiple mechanisms are involved in resistive switching. Here, a two-state-variable based second-order memristor model is presented, which considers the axial drift of the charged vacancies in an applied electric field and the radial vacancy motion caused by the thermophoresis and diffusion. In particular, this model emulates the details of the intrinsic short-term dynamics, such as decay and temporal heat summation, and therefore, it accurately predicts the resistive switching characteristics for both DC and AC input signals., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Our study investigates differences in sensitivity of dry and wet environment in the field of biosensing experiment in detail and depth. The sensitivity of biosensing varies by means of surrounding conditions of silicon nanowire field effect transistor (SiNW FET). By examining charged polymer reaction in the silicon nanowire transistor (SiNW), we have discovered that the threshold voltage (V(T)) shift and change of subthreshold slope (SS) in wet environment are smaller than that of the air. Furthermore, we analyzed the sensitivity through modifying electrolyte concentration in the wet condition, and confirmed that V(T) shift increases in low concentration condition of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) due to the Debye length. We believe that the results we have found in this study would be the cornerstone in contributing to advanced biosensing experiment in the future.

Purpose: The benefit of milk intake remains controversial. The association between milk consumption and Framingham Risk Score (FRS) in a population consuming relatively low amounts of dairy products is undetermined., Materials and Methods: A total of 13736 adults (5718 male and 8018 female) aged 20-80 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2008-2011) were divided into groups according to milk consumption (rarely, monthly, weekly, and daily) and compared according to FRS after relevant variable adjustments., Results: The mean FRS in males and females were 6.53 and 5.74, respectively. Males who consumed milk daily (15.9%) had a significantly lower FRS than males having milk rarely (31.6%) or monthly (17.4%; p=0.007). Females who consumed milk daily (22.3%) also had significantly lower FRS than rarely (29.8%), monthly (13.8%), or weekly (34%; p=0.001) consumers. In particular, males ≥60 years old who consumed milk daily had a significantly lower FRS than males who consumed less milk (p<0.001). The odds ratio in this age group showed a significant and gradual increase in the weekly [OR=2.15; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.14-4.03], monthly (OR=2.29; 95% CI 1.15-4.54), and rarely (OR=3.79; 95% CI 2.01-7.14) milk consumption groups when compared with the daily milk consumption group., Conclusion: Milk consumption was associated with a lower FRS in a low milk-consuming population. In particular, daily milk consumption in males over 60 years old may be beneficial for those at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Inspired by the human brain, a neuromorphic system combining complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and adjustable synaptic devices may offer new computing paradigms by enabling massive neural-network parallelism. In particular, synaptic devices, which are capable of emulating the functions of biological synapses, are used as the essential building blocks for an information storage and processing system. However, previous synaptic devices based on two-terminal resistive devices remain challenging because of their variability and specific physical mechanisms of resistance change, which lead to a bottleneck in the implementation of a high-density synaptic device network. Here we report that a three-terminal synaptic transistor based on carbon nanotubes can provide reliable synaptic functions that encode relative timing and regulate weight change. In addition, using system-level simulations, the developed synaptic transistor network associated with CMOS circuits can perform unsupervised learning for pattern recognition using a simplified spike-timing-dependent plasticity scheme.

Persistent photoconduction (PPC) is a phenomenon that limits the application of oxide semiconductor thin-film transistors (TFTs) in optical sensor-embedded displays. In the present work, a study on zinc oxynitride (ZnON) semiconductor TFTs based on the combination of experimental results and device simulation is presented. Devices incorporating ZnON semiconductors exhibit negligible PPC effects compared with amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO) TFTs, and the difference between the two types of materials are examined by monochromatic photonic C-V spectroscopy (MPCVS). The latter method allows the estimation of the density of subgap states in the semiconductor, which may account for the different behavior of ZnON and IGZO materials with respect to illumination and the associated PPC. In the case of a-IGZO TFTs, the oxygen flow rate during the sputter deposition of a-IGZO is found to influence the amount of PPC. Small oxygen flow rates result in pronounced PPC, and large densities of valence band tail (VBT) states are observed in the corresponding devices. This implies a dependence of PPC on the amount of oxygen vacancies (VO). On the other hand, ZnON has a smaller bandgap than a-IGZO and contains a smaller density of VBT states over the entire range of its bandgap energy. Here, the concept of activation energy window (AEW) is introduced to explain the occurrence of PPC effects by photoinduced electron doping, which is likely to be associated with the formation of peroxides in the semiconductor. The analytical methodology presented in this report accounts well for the reduction of PPC in ZnON TFTs, and provides a quantitative tool for the systematic development of phototransistors for optical sensor-embedded interactive displays.

Purpose: The association between excess calcium intake and cardiovascular mortality has already been reported. In the present study, we investigated the relation between dietary calcium intake and Framingham Risk Score (FRS) according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status., Materials and Methods: A total of 7809 subjects (3452 males and 4357 female) aged over 40 years were selected for this cross-sectional study from data obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2008-2011). Daily dietary calcium intake was categorized into <300, 300-600, 600-900, 900-1200, and >1200 mg/day and serum 25(OH)D concentration classified into <50, 50-75, >75 mmol/L. The FRS was compared by the daily dietary calcium intake categories according to 25(OH)D concentration after adjustment with relevant variables in both genders., Results: Higher FRS was observed in males with both <300 mg and >1200 mg of dietary calcium intake and females with <300 mg of dietary calcium intake without adjustment. The significantly higher FRS remained in the <300 mg and >1200 mg of dietary calcium intake groups in both genders after adjustments for relevant variables. FRS was significantly higher in the group with >1200 mg of dietary calcium intake and serum 25(OH)D <50 nmol/L, which was the male only vitamin D deficient group., Conclusion: Very low (<300 mg/day) and excess (>1200 mg/day) dietary calcium intake were related with higher FRS in both genders. In particular, higher FRS was observed in the excess (>1200 mg/day) dietary calcium intake male group under vitamin D deficiency (<50 nmol/L).

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the knee joint proprioception in weight-bearing (WB) and non-weight-bearing (NWB) positions and to study the difference between the methods in chronic stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were 15 stroke patients who were randomly scheduled to perform both positions by a physical therapist not involved in the study. The subjects performed the positions (WB and NWB) based on a randomized controlled cross-sectional design. WB subjects were positioned in one-leg standing to assess the knee joint position sense. NWB subjects were instructed to sit comfortably in a chair and maintain the knees at 90° of flexion with the leg out of the plinth. [Results] The results revealed that the WB position showed a significant difference in knee position sense. The proprioception sense in the WB position was a higher than that in the NWB position. [Conclusion] The knee proprioception of chronic stroke patients differs between the weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing positions.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of task-oriented training with whole body vibration (WBV) on the sitting balance of stroke patients. [Subjects] The subjects were 30 stroke patients who were randomly divided into experimental (n1=15) and control (n2=15) groups. [Methods] Subjects in both groups received general training five times per week. Subjects in the experimental group practiced an additional task-oriented training program with WBV, which was performed for 15 minutes, five times per week, for four weeks. The center of pressure (COP) path length and average velocity were used to assess subjects static sitting balance, and the Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT) was used to assess their dynamic sitting balance. The paired t-test was performed to test the significance of differences between before and after the intervention. The independent t-test was conducted to test the significance of differences between the groups. [Results] Following the intervention, the experimental group showed a significant change in MFRT. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that task-oriented training with WBV is feasible and efficacious for stroke patients.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most deadly type of cancer worldwide. Although a number of therapies are used in NSCLC treatment, their therapeutic efficacy remains low. Lenalidomide was originally approved for use in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, which are associated with 5q deletions, and multiple myeloma. Recently, lenalidomide was investigated as a new NSCLC treatment, and it exerted anticancer effects. However, the primary cellular mechanism of its effects in NSCLC is largely unknown. Therefore, we attempted to elucidate a molecular portrait of lenalidomide-mediated cellular events in NSCLC. Lenalidomide reduced the viability of several NSCLC cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, array-based gene expression analysis revealed that lenalidomide regulated the expression of several genes associated with cell survival, apoptosis and development, including BH3-interacting domain death agonist (BID), v-fos FBJ murine osteosarcoma viral oncogene homolog (FOS) and NK2 homeobox1 (NKX2-1). BID and FOS, which are known apoptosis activators, were upregulated by lenalidomide treatment, whereas NKX2-1, which is used as an immunohistochemistry marker for NSCLC, was downregulated. These results provide evidence that lenalidomide directly induces antiproliferative effects by altering the expression of genes associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis.

We propose a new active nonlinear model of the frequency response of the basilar membrane in biological cochlea called the simple dual path nonlinear (SDPN) model and a novel sound processing strategy for cochlear implants (CIs) based upon this model. The SDPN model was developed to utilize the advantages of the level-dependent frequency response characteristics of the basilar membrane for robust formant representation under noisy conditions. In comparison to the dual resonance nonlinear model (DRNL) which was previously proposed as an active nonlinear model of the basilar membrane, the SDPN model can reproduce similar level-dependent frequency responses with a much simpler structure and is thus better suited for incorporation into CI sound processors. By the analysis of dominant frequency component, it was confirmed that the formants of speech are more robustly represented after frequency decomposition by the nonlinear filterbank using SDPN, compared to a linear bandpass filter array which is used in conventional strategies. Acoustic simulation and hearing experiments in subjects with normal hearing showed that the proposed strategy results in better syllable recognition under speech-shaped noise compared to the conventional strategy based on fixed linear bandpass filters.

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) is a member of the cytochrome p450 enzyme family, which is involved in the metabolisms of carcinogenic metabolites, such as benzo(a)pyrene. In this study, we identified miR-892a as a negative regulator of CYP1A1 expression. Luciferase assays revealed a sequence in the 3'-untranslated region of CYP1A1 that displayed a perfect match with miR-892a, and revealed that this sequence was a specific miR-892a target site. The overexpression of miR‑892a inhibited the expression of the CYP1A1 protein, and the miR‑892a antagonist increased CYP1A1 expression. Of note, benzo(a)pyrene, a major inducer of CYP1A1 transcription, decreased the expression of miR-892a. Moreover, the miR-892a-induced CYP1A1 repression inhibited the benzo(a)pyrene-mediated decrease in cell viability. These data provide insight into the CYP1A1 regulatory network.

50 nm wide n-type silicon nanowires have been manufactured by using a top-down process in order to investigate the thermoelectric properties of silicon nanowire. Nanowire test structures with platinum heaters and temperature sensors were fabricated. The extracted temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of the temperature sensors was 786.6 PPM/K. Also, the extracted Seebeck coefficient and power factor of the 50 nm wide phosphorus doped n-type silicon nanowires were -118 miroV/K and 2.16 mW x K(-2) x m(-1).

GDP-bound prenylated Rabs, sequestered by GDI (GDP dissociation inhibitor) in the cytosol, are delivered to destined sub-cellular compartment and subsequently activated by GEFs (guanine nucleotide exchange factors) catalysing GDP-to-GTP exchange. The dissociation of GDI from Rabs is believed to require a GDF (GDI displacement factor). Only two RabGDFs, human PRA-1 and Legionella pneumophila SidM/DrrA, have been identified so far and the molecular mechanism of GDF is elusive. Here, we present the structure of a SidM/DrrA fragment possessing dual GEF and GDF activity in complex with Rab1. SidM/DrrA reconfigures the Switch regions of the GTPase domain of Rab1, as eukaryotic GEFs do toward cognate Rabs. Structure-based mutational analyses show that the surface of SidM/DrrA, catalysing nucleotide exchange, is involved in GDI1 displacement from prenylated Rab1:GDP. In comparison with an eukaryotic GEF TRAPP I, this bacterial GEF/GDF exhibits high binding affinity for Rab1 with GDP retained at the active site, which appears as the key feature for the GDF activity of the protein.

Because the amount of power that a piezoelectric transformer (PT) can handle is limited, multiple connections of PTs are necessary for the power-capacity improvement of PT-applications. In the connection, thermal imbalance between the PTs should be prevented to avoid the thermal runaway of each PT. The thermal balance of the multiple-connected PTs is dominantly affected by the electrothermal characteristics of individual PTs. In this paper, the thermal balance of both parallel-parallel and parallel-series connections are analyzed by electrical model parameters. For quantitative analysis, the thermal-balance effects are estimated by the simulation of the mechanical loss ratio between the PTs. The analysis results show that with PTs of similar characteristics, the parallel-series connection has better thermal balance characteristics due to the reduced mechanical loss of the higher temperature PT. For experimental verification of the analysis, a hardware-prototype test of a Cs-Lp type 40 W adapter system with radial-vibration mode PTs has been performed.

Adenoids are known as immunosecretory organs and those in atopic children present cellular and cytokine profiles different from those of non-atopic children. We hypothesized that locally produced total IgE and allergen-specific antibodies could be involved in the inflammatory responses in adenoid tissue. Local productions of total IgE and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP)-specific IgE, IgA, IgG1, and IgG4 antibodies were evaluated, as well as their relationships with the markers of allergic inflammation within adenoid tissue. Eighteen atopic subjects, who were sensitized to more than one common aeroallergen, and 22 non-atopic subjects undergoing adenotonsillectomy, were recruited. Immunoassays using adenoid tissue homogenate were performed to quantify the levels of total IgE, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and mast cell tryptase. DP-specific IgE, IgA, IgG1, and IgG4 antibodies, soluble IL-2 receptors (sIL-2R), soluble CD23 (sCD23), and IL-6 were measured by ELISA. All parameters measured in adenoid tissue homogenate were presented as a ratio to the albumin level found in the adenoid. Median level of total IgE in adenoid tissue homogenate was significantly higher in atopic individuals than in non-atopic individuals. Median values of DP-specific IgE and IgA antibodies were significantly higher in atopics than in non-atopics (p = 0.001, p = 0.006, respectively), while no differences were seen in DP-specific IgG1 and IgG4 antibodies. ECP and sCD23 levels in adenoid homogenate were significantly higher in atopics than in non-atopics (p = 0.026, p = 0.048, respectively), while no significant differences were noted in tryptase, sIL-2R, and IL-6 levels. The levels of DP-specific IgE, IgA, IgG1, and IgG4 antibodies in adenoid homogenate correlated significantly with ECP levels, but not with those of sIL-2R, sCD23, and IL-6. The presence of total IgE and DP-specific antibodies in adenoid tissue was confirmed to be more prominent in atopics. In conclusion, locally-produced total IgE and DP-specific antibodies may contribute to eosinophilic inflammation in adenoid tissue in atopic children.
