Abstract Background ARL9 is a newly identified member of the ARF family, and the clinical significance of ARL9 in colon adenocarcinoma is unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore the expression of ARL9 mRNA in colon adenocarcinoma, and its effect on the prognosis of patients with colon adenocarcinoma. Methods We investigated the differential expression of ARL9 between colon adenocarcinoma tissue and adjacent tissues through a bioinformatics analysis using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The correlation between clinical characteristics and the mRNA expression level of ARL9 were analyzed. A survival analysis and a Cox regression analysis were used to determine the prognostic significance of ARL9. Finally, we conducted a gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to explore the ARL9 signaling pathways involved in the development of colon adenocarcinoma. The effect of the expression of ARL9 on the proliferation and migration of colon adenocarcinoma was analyzed by the CCK8 method and a cell scratch test, respectively. Line edge roughness (LER) of patterned features in chemically amplified (CA) resists is formed in the acid generation stage and expected to be moderated by the acid diffusion and development process. It is essential to obtain information on the limit of LER in order to realize next-generation lithographies such as electron beam or extreme ultraviolet. Here, we report for the first time a process simulator based on physical and chemical reaction mechanisms. The LER of a positive-tone CA resist after development is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation and Mack's dissolution model. We found that the LER (high frequency) of less than 1.2 nm is achievable, although the process conditions and material design for achieving such a small LER are strict. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Our study aimed to investigate the shape and diffusion properties of the corticospinal tract (CST) in patients with insular incidental and symptomatic low-grade gliomas (LGGs), especially those in the incidental group, and evaluate their association with post-surgical motor function. Methods: We performed automatic fiber tracking on 41 LGG patients, comparing macroscopic shape and microscopic diffusion properties of CST between ipsilateral and contralateral tracts in both incidental and symptomatic groups. A correlation analysis was conducted between properties of CST and post-operative motor strength grades. Results: In the incidental group, no significant differences in mean diffusion properties were found between bilateral CST. While decreased anisotropy of the CST around the superior limiting sulcus and increased axial diffusivity of the CST near the midbrain level were noted, there was no significant correlation between pre-operative diffusion metrics and post-operative motor strength. In comparison, we found significant correlations between the elongation of the affected CST in the preoperative scans and post-operative motor strength in short-term and long-term follow ups (p = 1.810 × 10-4 and p = 9.560 × 10-4, respectively). Conclusions: We found a significant correlation between CST shape measures and post-operative motor function outcomes in patients with incidental insular LGGs. CST morphology shows promise as a potential prognostic factor for identifying functional deficits in this patient population.

Non-coding RNAs play an important role in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer (PC). This study aims to characterize the role of GAS5 rs145204276 and HOTAIR rs4759314 polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of PC. Both INS allele of GAS5 rs145204276 and A allele of HOTAIR rs4759314 were identified to increase the survival of PC patients. And patients carrying DEL/DEL + AG genotypes tend to present higher levels of HMGB1, GAS5, HOTAIR and lower levels of miR-1284 and miR-22. In addition, the transcription activity of GAS5 promoter was increased by the deletion allele of rs145204276 polymorphism, while the G allele of rs4759314 polymorphism increased the transcription activity of HOTAIR promoter. GAS5 and HOTAIR could bind to miR-1284 and miR-22, respectively, while miR-1284 and miR-22 could bind to the 3′UTR of HMGB1. Compared with the control group, the expressions of miR-1284 or miR-22 were decreased with the presence of GAS5 or HOTAIR, and the expression of HMGB1 was the highest in the GAS5 + HOTAIR group. In summary, the findings of this study demonstrated that both GAS5 rs145204276 and HOTAIR rs4759314 polymorphisms could affect the prognosis of PC by modulating the expression of HMGB1 via modulating the GAS5/miR-1284/HMGB1 and HOTAIR/miR-22/HMGB1 signalling pathways.

This study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of morning urine specific gravity (MUSG) in diagnosing BKPyVAN in kidney transplant recipients. Methods:. A total of 87 patients, including 27 with BKPyVAN, 22 with isolated BKPyV viruria, 18 with T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR), and 20 with stable graft function, were enrolled in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from March 2015 to February 2017. MUSG at biopsy and during a follow-up period of 24 months after biopsy was collected and analyzed. Abstract. Background:. BK virus-associated nephropathy (BKVN) is an important cause of chronic allograft dysfunction. The objective of our study was to evaluate the prognosis of BKVN. Methods:. We retrospectively reviewed the data of 133 renal transplant recipients with BKVN treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University between July 2007 and July 2017. BK viral loads, graft function, and pathologic indexes were compared between initial diagnosis and last follow-up. Results:. After a mean follow-up period of 14.4 (range, 0.3–109.6) months after diagnosis of BKVN, BK viruria, and BK viremia become negative in 19.5% and 90.2% of patients, respectively. Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the urinary system. The mechanisms of the initiation and progression of prostate cancer have not been fully elucidated. Increasing evidence suggests that circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in cancer pathogenesis. In this study, we aimed to identify differentially expressed circRNAs in prostate cancer tissues and explored the role of circRNAs in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer. By screening a circRNA microarray assay, we found that circ_0088233 was upregulated in prostate cancer tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues, and this upregulation can be verified in 46 pairs of prostate cancer and adjacent normal tissues examined using quantitative reverse transcription-PCR. The level of circ_0088233 correlated with the TNM stage. Knockdown of circ_0088233 reduced cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and induced G1 phase arrest and apoptosis. In addition, miR-185-3p was identified as the downstream target of circ_0088233 using luciferase reporter assays and a biotinylated circ_0088233 probe pull-down assay. The miR-185-3p level showed a negative correlation with the circ_0088233 level in prostate cancer tissues. Overexpression of circ_0088233 blocked the effects of miR-185-3p on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, cell cycle, and apoptosis. In conclusion, circ_0088233 may function as an oncogene and play an oncogenic role by sponging hsa-miR-185-3p. This study increases the understanding of circRNAs in the progression of prostate cancer. These results implicate circ_0088233 as a potential therapeutic target for prostate cancer.

BackgroundThe extent and depth of BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) infection in renal allograft correlate with prognosis. This study was designed to evaluate the value of urinary sediment double-immunostaining for predicting BKPyV infection in proximal tubular epithelium.Materials and methodsA total of 76 urine sediment cell blocks, as well as the corresponding transplanted kidney tissues with BK polyomavirus associated-nephropathy (BKPyVAN), were evaluated by automatic double-immunostaining with anti-58-kDa Golgi protein (58K, a proximal renal tubular marker) + anti-SV40-T and anti-homogentisate 1, 2-dioxygenase (HGD, a renal tubular marker) + anti-SV40-T.ResultsImmunohistochemical staining demonstrated that 58K was expressed in proximal tubular epithelium but not in distal tubular epithelium or transitional epithelium. Of the 76 patients, 28 (36.8%) had urinary 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells and HGD(+)/SV40-T(+) cells, 41 (53.9%) had only HGD(+)/SV40-T(+) cells, one (1.3%) had only 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells, and six (7.9%) had only 58K(−)/HGD(−)/SV40-T(+) cells. The presence of urinary 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells was correlated with BKPyV infection in proximal tubular epithelium (P < 0.001, r = 0.806). The mean extent of SV40-T staining was significantly more extensive in patients with urinary 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells than those without urinary 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells (21.4 vs. 12.0%, P < 0.001). The positive predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity of urinary 58K(+)/SV40-T(+) cells for predicting BKPyV infection in proximal tubular epithelium were 89.7% (95% CI: 71.5–97.3%), 91.5% (95% CI: 78.7–97.2%), 86.7% (95% CI: 68.4–95.6%), and 93.5% (95% CI: 81.1–98.3%), respectively.ConclusionUrinary sediment double-immunostaining with anti-58K and anti-SV40-T is valuable for predicting the extent and depth of BKPyV infection in renal allograft.

Background: Studies have shown that plasma donor–derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) can predict renal allograft antibody-mediated rejection. This study was performed to evaluate the value of urine dd-cfDNA concentration and dd-cfDNA fraction (%) for discriminating BK polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN) in kidney transplant recipients with urinary BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) infection.Methods: In this retrospective single-center observational study, we enrolled kidney transplant recipients who were diagnosed with urine BKPyV infection between August 2018 and May 2019 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Urine dd-cfDNA was measured by using a novel target region capture sequencing methodology. The pathological diagnosis of BKPyVAN was confirmed by anti-SV40-T immunohistochemical staining and classified using the American Society for Transplantation schema. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to investigate the relations of urine dd-cfDNA and dd-cfDNA% to intrarenal allograft BKPyV infection states.Results: In total, 93 patients were enrolled, including 40 cases of proven BKPyVAN, seven cases of probable BKPyVAN, 23 cases of possible BKPyVAN, and 23 cases of resolving BKPyVAN. Urine dd-cfDNA level in proven BKPyVAN (22.09 ± 21.27 ng/ml) was comparable to that in probable BKPyVAN (15.64 ± 6.73 ng/ml, P = 0.434) but was significantly higher than that in possible BKPyVAN (5.60 ± 3.53 ng/ml) and resolving BKPyVAN (5.30 ± 3.34 ng/ml) (both Ps < 0.05). Urine dd-cfDNA% of proven BKPyVAN (0.71 ± 0.21) was lower than that of probable BKPyVAN (0.91 ± 0.04, P < 0.001), but was significantly higher than that of possible BKPyVAN (0.56 ± 0.30) and resolving BKPyVAN (0.46 ± 0.28) (both Ps < 0.05). For distinguishing biopsy-proven BKPyVAN from biopsy-excluded BKPyVAN, the discrimination capacity of urine dd-cfDNA (AUC: 0.842, 95% CI: 0.735, 0.918) was superior to that of plasma BKPyV DNA load (AUC: 0.660, 95% CI: 0.537, 0.769) with 0.181 (95% CI: 0.043, 0.319) difference between areas under ROC curves (P = 0.010).Conclusion: The elevated urine dd-cfDNA level may help discriminate BKPyVAN in kidney transplant recipients with BKPyV viruria.

Background: Accumulating studies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) support the involvement of hemodynamic factors in artery stenosis. Based on a patient-specific CFD model, the present study aimed to investigate the hemodynamic characteristics of transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS) and its alteration after stent treatment. Methods: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) data of kidney transplant recipients in a single transplant center from April 2013 to November 2014 were reviewed. The three-dimensional geometry of transplant renal artery (TRA) was reconstructed from the qualified CTA images and categorized into three groups: the normal, stenotic, and stented groups. Hemodynamic parameters including pressure distribution, velocity, wall shear stress (WSS), and mass flow rate (MFR) were extracted. The data of hemodynamic parameters were expressed as median (interquartile range), and Mann–Whitney U-test was used for analysis. Results: Totally, 6 normal, 12 stenotic, and 6 stented TRAs were included in the analysis. TRAS presented nonuniform pressure distribution, adverse pressure gradient across stenosis throat, flow vortex, and a separation zone at downstream stenosis. Stenotic arteries had higher maximal velocity and maximal WSS (2.94 [2.14, 3.30] vs. 1.06 [0.89, 1.15] m/s, 256.5 [149.8, 349.4] vs. 41.7 [37.8, 45.3] Pa at end diastole, P= 0.001; 3.25 [2.67, 3.56] vs. 1.65 [1.18, 1.72] m/s, 281.3 [184.3, 364.7] vs. 65.8 [61.2, 71.9] Pa at peak systole, P= 0.001) and lower minimal WSS and MFRs (0.07 [0.03, 0.13] vs. 0.52 [0.45, 0.67] Pa, 1.5 [1.0, 3.0] vs. 11.0 [8.0, 11.3] g/s at end diastole, P= 0.001; 0.08 [0.03, 0.19] vs. 0.70 [0.60, 0.81] Pa, 2.0 [1.3, 3.3] vs. 16.5 [13.0, 20.3] g/s at peak systole, P= 0.001) as compared to normal arteries. Stent implantation ameliorated all the alterations of the above hemodynamic factors except low WSS. Conclusions: Hemodynamic factors were significantly changed in severe TRAS. Stent implantation can restore or ameliorate deleterious change of hemodynamic factors except low WSS at stent regions.

Family with sequence similarity 96 member A (FAM96A) is an evolutionarily conserved intracellular protein that is involved in the maturation of the Fe/S protein, iron regulatory protein 1 (IRP1), and the mitochondria-related apoptosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumor cells. In this study, we used a mouse model of chemically induced colitis to investigate the physiological role of FAM96A in intestinal homeostasis and inflammation. At baseline, colons from Fam96a−/− mice exhibited microbial dysbiosis, dysregulated epithelial cell turnover, an increased number of goblet cells, and disordered tight junctions with functional deficits affecting intestinal permeability. After cohousing, the differences between wild-type and Fam96a−/− colons were abrogated, suggesting that FAM96A affects colonic epithelial cells in a microbiota-dependent manner. Fam96a deficiency in mice resulted in increased susceptibility to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Importantly, the colitogenic activity of Fam96a−/− intestinal microbiota was transferable to wild-type littermate mice via fecal microbial transplantation (FMT), leading to exacerbation of DSS-induced colitis. Taken together, our data indicate that FAM96A helps to maintain colonic homeostasis and protect against DSS-induced colitis by preventing gut microbial dysbiosis. This study used gene knockout animals to help to understand the in vivo effects of the Fam96a gene for the first time and provides new evidence regarding host–microbiota interactions.

It is commonly known that children do not engage in a sufficient amount of physical activity. Weather conditions and day length may influence physical activity of children. Little is known about the relationship between physical activity and seasons. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between weather conditions and physical activity in 6−12 year old children based on hip-worn Actigraph wGT3X−BT accelerometer data. The study sample consisted of 2015 subjects aged 6−12 years from the Health Oriented Pedagogical Project (HOPP) study carried out in Horten municipality and Akershus county, Norway. Six days of sedentary and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity data was gathered in January−June and September−October, 2015, presented as daily averages. The accelerometer-monitored physical activity of children grouped within nine schools was matched with regional weather conditions and assessed with the means of linear mixed models. Increased day length was associated with decreased sedentary behavior. Warmer temperature and dry weather were associated with increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity after adjusting for age and sex. One-hour increase in daylight resulted in a decrease of sedentary time by, on average, 2 min (95% CI = (−2.577, −0.798)). For every 5 °C increase in temperature (range: −0.95 and 15.51 °C) and dry weather, average moderate-to vigorous physical activity increased by 72 and 67 min (males and females, respectively) (p < 0.001). Days with precipitation had, on average, 10 fewer minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared with days without precipitation (95% CI = (−16.704, −3.259)). Higher temperatures and dry weather led to higher physical activity levels, seeing larger increases among boys than girls. A school-based physical activity intervention program should be adjusted regarding local weather conditions in line with the present findings.

Five new phenolic siderophores 1–5 were isolated from the organic extract of a culture broth in a modified SGG medium of Pseudomonas sp. UIAU-6B, obtained from sediments collected from the Oyun river in North Central Nigeria. The structure of the new compounds, pseudomonin A–C (1–3) and pseudomobactin A and B (4 and 5) isolated alongside two known compounds, pseudomonine (6) and salicylic acid (7), were elucidated based on high-resolution mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR analyses. The absolute configuration of the threonine residue in compounds 1–5 was determined by Marfey analysis. The antimicrobial evaluation of compound 4 exhibited the most potent activity against vancomycin-sensitive Enterococcus faecium VS144754, followed by 3 and 5, with MIC values ranging from 8 to 32 µg/mL. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibited moderate activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, with MIC values of 7.8 and 15.6 µg/mL, respectively. Plausible biosynthetic hypotheses toward the new compounds 1–5 were proposed.

720. Factors Influencing Graft Outcomes Following Diagnosis of Polyomavirus -Associated Nephropathy after Renal Transplantation.

Polyomavirus associated nephropathy (PVAN) is a significant cause of early allograft loss and the course is difficult to predict. The aim of this study is to identify factors influencing outcome for PVAN.Between 2006 and 2014, we diagnosed PVAN in 48 (7.8%) of 615 patients monitored for BK virus every 1-4 weeks after modification of maintenance immunosuppression. Logistic or Cox regression analysis were performed to determine which risk factors independently affected clinical outcome and graft loss respectively.After 32.1±26.4 months follow-up, the frequencies of any graft functional decline at 1 year post-diagnosis, graft loss and any graft functional decline at the last available follow-up were 27.1% (13/48), 25.0% (12/48), and 33.3% (16/48), respectively. The 1, 3, 5 year graft survival rates were 100%, 80.5% and 69.1%, respectively. The mean level of serum creatinine at 1 year post-diagnosis and long-term graft survival rates were the worst in class C (p2.75 months for >90% decrease) in urine (OR 16.7, p = 0.055) correlated with worse creatinine at 1 year post-diagnosis. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that extensive interstitial inflammation (HR 46988, p = 0.032) at diagnosis, and high PVAN stage (HR 162.2, p = 0.021) were associated with worse long-term graft survival rates.The extent of interstitial inflammation influences short and long-term graft outcomes in patients with PVAN. The degree of PVAN, rate of reduction in viral load, and viral clearance also can be used as prognostic markers in PVAN.

Holomycin and its derivatives belong to a class of broad-spectrum antibacterial natural products containing a rare dithiolopyrrolone heterobicyclic scaffold. The antibacterial mechanism of dithiolopyrrolone compounds has been attributed to the inhibition of bacterial RNA polymerase activities, although the exact mode of action has not been established in vitro. Some dithiopyrrolone derivatives display potent anticancer activities. Recently the biosynthetic gene cluster of holomycin has been identified and characterized in Streptomyces clavuligerus. Here we report that the fish pathogen Yersinia ruckeri is a holomycin producer, as evidenced through genome mining, chemical isolation, and structural elucidation as well as genetic manipulation. We also identified a unique regulatory gene hom15 at one end of the gene cluster encoding a cold-shock-like protein that likely regulates the production of holomycin in low cultivation temperatures. Inactivation of hom15 resulted in a significant loss of holomycin production. Finally, gene disruption of an RNAmethyltransferase gene hom12 resulted in the sensitivity of the mutant toward holomycin. A complementation experiment of hom12 restored the resistance against holomycin. Although the wild-type Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) Gold is susceptible to holomycin, the mutant harboring hom12 showed tolerance toward holomycin. High resolution liquid chromatography (LC)-ESI/MS analysis of digested RNA fragments demonstrated that the wild-type Y. ruckeri and E. coli harboring hom12 contain a methylated RNA fragment, whereas the mutated Y. ruckeri and the wild-type E. coli only contain normal non-methylated RNA fragments. Taken together, our results strongly suggest that this putative RNA methyltransferase Hom12 is the self-resistance protein that methylates the RNA of Y. ruckeri to reduce the cytotoxic effect of holomycin during holomycin production. - Abstract
Endoscopy is the primary modality for detecting asymptomatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and precancerous lesions. Improving detection rate remains challenging. We developed a system based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for detecting esophageal cancer and precancerous lesions [high-risk esophageal lesions (HrELs)] and validated its efficacy in improving HrEL detection rate in clinical practice (trial registration ChiCTR2100044126 at www.chictr.org.cn). Between April 2021 and March 2022, 3117 patients ≥50 years old were consecutively recruited from Taizhou Hospital, Zhejiang Province, and randomly assigned 1:1 to an experimental group (CNN-assisted endoscopy) or a control group (unassisted endoscopy) based on block randomization. The primary endpoint was the HrEL detection rate. In the intention-to-treat population, the HrEL detection rate [28 of 1556 (1.8%)] was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group [14 of 1561 (0.9%), P = 0.029], and the experimental group detection rate was twice that of the control group. Similar findings were observed between the experimental and control groups [28 of 1524 (1.9%) versus 13 of 1534 (0.9%), respectively; P = 0.021]. The system's sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for detecting HrELs were 89.7, 98.5, and 98.2%, respectively. No adverse events occurred. The proposed system thus improved HrEL detection rate during endoscopy and was safe. Deep learning assistance may enhance early diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer and may become a useful tool for esophageal cancer screening.

Background: ARL9 is a newly identified member of the ARF family, and the clinical significance of ARL9 in colon adenocarcinoma is unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore the expression of ARL9 mRNA in colon adenocarcinoma, and its effect on the prognosis of patients with colon adenocarcinoma., Methods: We investigated the differential expression of ARL9 between colon adenocarcinoma tissue and adjacent tissues through a bioinformatics analysis using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The correlation between clinical characteristics and the mRNA expression level of ARL9 were analyzed. A survival analysis and a Cox regression analysis were used to determine the prognostic significance of ARL9. Finally, we conducted a gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to explore the ARL9 signaling pathways involved in the development of colon adenocarcinoma. The effect of the expression of ARL9 on the proliferation and migration of colon adenocarcinoma was analyzed by the CCK8 method and a cell scratch test, respectively., Results: The mRNA expression of ARL9 in colon adenocarcinoma tissues was higher in comparison to the level in normal adjacent tissues (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression of ARL9 was not related to sex, tumor stage, T stage, N stage, M stage, but to age. The 5-year survival rate of colon adenocarcinoma patients with high ARL9 mRNA expression levels was significantly lower than that of patients with low ARL9 mRNA expression levels (P < 0.05). Age and the high mRNA expression of ARL9 were independent risk factors for a poor prognosis in patients with colon adenocarcinoma. The GSEA suggested that ARL9 may be able to upregulate cell adhesion, extracellular matrix receptor interactions, tumor-associated pathways, and downregulate the citrate cycle and tricarboxylic acid cycle pathway, which are involved in the development of colon adenocarcinoma. After knocking down ARL9, the proliferation and migration abilities of colon adenocarcinoma cells were decreased (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: The mRNA expression of ARL9 is upregulated in colon adenocarcinoma, and higher mRNA expression levels are associated with a poor prognosis. 724. Effectiveness and safety of endoscopic resection for duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors: A single center analysis.

Background: Endoscopic resection for duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) is still considered a great challenge with a high risk of complications, including perforation, bleeding, tumor rupture, and residual tumor., Aim: To assess the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic resection for duodenal GISTs., Methods: Between January 2010 and January 2022, 11 patients with duodenal GISTs were treated with endoscopic resection. Data were extracted for the incidence of complete resection, bleeding, perforation, postoperative infection, recurrence, and distant metastasis., Results: The incidence of successful complete resection of duodenal GISTs was 100%. Three cases (27.3%) had suspected positive margins, and the other 8 cases (72.7%) had negative vertical and horizontal margins. Perforation occurred in all 11 patients. The success rate of perforation closure was 100%, while 1 patient (9.1%) had suspected delayed perforation. All bleeding during the procedure was managed by endoscopic methods. One case (9.1%) had delayed bleeding. Postoperative infection occurred in 6 patients (54.5%), including 1 who developed septic shock and 1 who developed a right iliac fossa abscess. All 11 patients recovered and were discharged. The mean hospital stay was 15.3 d. During the follow-up period (14-80 mo), duodenal stenosis occurred in 1 case (9.1%), and no local recurrence or distant metastasis were detected., Conclusion: Endoscopic resection for duodenal GISTs appears to be an effective and safe minimally invasive treatment when performed by an experienced endoscopist., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (©The Author(s) 2022. - Abstract
Probiotics are live microorganisms that can be consumed by humans in amounts sufficient to offer health-promoting effects. Owing to their various biological functions, probiotics are widely used in biological engineering, industry and agriculture, food safety, and the life and health fields. Lactobacillus acidophilus ( L. acidophilus ), an important human intestinal probiotic, was originally isolated from the human gastrointestinal tract and its functions have been widely studied ever since it was named in 1900. L. acidophilus has been found to play important roles in many aspects of human health. Due to its good resistance against acid and bile salts, it has broad application prospects in functional, edible probiotic preparations. In this review, we explore the basic characteristics and biological functions of L. acidophilus based on the research progress made thus far worldwide. Various problems to be solved regarding the applications of probiotic products and their future development are also discussed.

- Abstract
A 48-year-old woman was admitted with 15-mo history of abdominal pain, diarrhea and hematochezia, and 5-mo history of defecation difficulty. She had been successively admitted to nine hospitals, with an initial diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease with stenotic sigmoid colon. Findings from computed tomography virtual colonoscopy, radiography with meglumine diatrizoate, endoscopic balloon dilatation, metallic stent implantation and later overall colonoscopy, coupled with the newfound knowledge of compound Qingdai pill-taking, led to a subsequent diagnosis of ischemic or toxic bowel disease with sigmoid colon stenosis. The patient was successfully treated by laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy, and postoperative pathological examination revealed ischemic or toxic injury of the sigmoid colon, providing a final diagnosis of drug-induced sigmoid colon stenosis. This case highlights that adequate awareness of drug-induced colon stenosis has a decisive role in avoiding misdiagnosis and mistreatment. The diagnostic and therapeutic experiences learnt from this case suggest that endoscopic balloon expansion and colonic metallic stent implantation as bridge treatments were demonstrated as crucial for the differential diagnosis of benign colonic stenosis. Aim: To present clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment strategies in elderly patients with biliary diseases., Methods: A total of 289 elderly patients with biliary diseases were enrolled in this study. The clinical data relating to these patients were collected in our hospital from June 2013 to May 2016. Patient age, disease type, coexisting diseases, laboratory examinations, surgical methods, postoperative complications and therapeutic outcomes were analyzed., Results: The average age of the 289 patients with biliary diseases was 73.9 ± 8.5 years (range, 60-102 years). One hundred and thirty-one patients (45.3%) had one of 10 different biliary diseases, such as gallbladder stones, common bile duct stones, and cholangiocarcinoma. The remaining patients (54.7%) had two types of biliary diseases. One hundred and seventy-nine patients underwent 9 different surgical treatments, including pancreaticoduodenectomy, radical resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Ten postoperative complications occurred with an incidence of 39.3% (68/173), and hypopotassemia showed the highest incidence (33.8%, 23/68). One hundred and sixteen patients underwent non-surgical treatments, including anti-infection, symptomatic and supportive treatments. The cure rate was 97.1% (168/173) in the surgical group and 87.1% (101/116) in the non-surgical group. The difference between these two groups was statistically significant ( χ
