Biopsies taken from the anterior two-thirds of the inferior turbinate of 3 female patients affected by unilateral complete choanal atresia were studied at the light, transmission and scanning electron microscope. Several changes, such as the uneveness of the mucosal surface, the thickening of the basal membrane, and the presence of ciliary abnormalities in the respiratory mucosa of the affected cavity, were observed. Ciliary abnormalities consisted of the presence of several 'adhesive' and 'bulging' compound cilia, of cilia with excessive cytoplasm and cytoplasmatic processes, and of ciliary structures with loss of the peripheral membrane. At SEM, cilia of the affected cavity appeared bundled, irregularly oriented, flattened and covered by an increased and/or accumulated secretion. Choanal atresia represents, according to the authors, a chronic suffering condition of the nasal mucous membranes. It is characterized by peculiar aspects which are probably related, on one hand, to the increased and/or accumulated mucous secretions and, on the other, to the congenital and long-standing airflow deprivation.

Carrots (Daucus carota L. cv. Royal Chantenay) and sweet corn vi (Zea mays L. cv. Iochief) were grown rm the Utah State University's Greenville farm in 1969 and 1970. The soil was fumigated with Telone (a mixture of 1, 3-dichloropropene and other chlorinated hydrocarbons) at the rates of 10, 20, and 30 gal/acre and Nemagon (1, 2-dibromo-3-chloropropane) at the rates of 1, 2, and 3 gal/acre one week before planting. Samples of uniformly mature carrot roots were taken for the studies of total carotenes, ��-carotene, total and reducing sugars, respiration, and ultrastructural changes; and those of sweet corn seeds for the studies of total carotenoids , starch, total sugar, and total nitrogen changes. Compared to the controls, carrots grown on fumigated soil had a significantly higher content of total carotenes, ��-carotene, and total sugars, and a lower rate of respiration. The electron microscopic study indicated that the carrots from Telone (30 gal/acre) and Nemagon (3 gal/acre) fumigated soil had larger chromoplasts that contained more globuli and crystals than those of the controls. The soil fumigations with Telone and Nemagon also brought about the increase in total carotenoid content in sweet corn seeds.

A B S T R A C T Introduction: Even today there is no effective drug therapy to prevent neuronal loss after brain stroke. In the present study we studied the effect of mitochondrial KATP channel regulators on neuronal ultrastructure after ischemia reperfusion in the rat. Materials & Methods: Rats temporarily subjected to four vessels occlusion for 15 minutes followed by 24 hours reperfusion with or without K-ATP channel regulators. Results: Neuronal ultrastructure significantly improved in K-ATP channel opener (diazoxide) treated ischemia-reperfusion group compared with control group. Discussion: Our results showed that dizoxide treatment after ischemia reperfusion leads to better preservation of cortical neurons in rat.
