Chemists rely on a toolbox of robust chemical transformations for selectively modifying molecules with spatial and functional precision to make them more complex in a controllable and predictable manner. This manuscript describes proof-of-principle experiments for a conceptually analogous strategy involving the selective, stepwise, and spatially controlled modification of inorganic nanostructures. The key concept is orthogonal reactivity: one component of a multicomponent system reacts with a particular reagent under a specific set of conditions while the others do not, even though they are all present together in the same reaction vessel. Using the chemical conversion of metal nanoparticles into intermetallic, sulfide, and phosphide nanoparticles as representative examples, the concept of orthogonal reactivity is defined and demonstrated for a variety of two- and three-component nanoscale systems. First, solution-phase reactivity data are presented and collectively analyzed for the reaction of metal nanoparticles (Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt, Au, Sn) with several metal salt and elemental reagents (Bi, Pb, Sb, Sn, S). From these data, several two- and three-component orthogonal systems are identified. Finally, these results are applied to the spatially selective chemical modification of lithographically patterned surfaces and striped template-grown metal nanowires.

The controllable synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals is important for exploiting their size-dependent properties in a variety of applications. The important wide-bandgap semiconductors ZnS and ZnSe crystallize in both the zincblende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) structures. While the ZB polymorphs are most stable, methods exist for synthesizing the WZ-type nanocrystals. However, because of the subtle structural differences between the ZB and WZ structures, subtle synthetic differences can favor one polymorph over the other. It is therefore challenging to predictably generate the WZ polymorphs and understand the factors that play a key role in their formation. Through careful mechanistic studies, we show that ZnO nanoparticles, which adopt the WZ structure, form as intermediates in typical reactions that generate WZ-ZnS. This implies that ZnO nanoparticles can serve as structural templates for the preferential formation of WZ-ZnS nanoparticles, and this is confirmed experimentally. Similar chemistry can be used to preferentially form WZ-ZnSe and ZB-ZnSe.

Alloys and intermetallic compounds of Au with the 3d transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni are nonequilibrium phases that have many useful potential applications as catalytic, magnetic, optic, and multifunctional magneto-optic materials. However, the atomically ordered Au-M (M = Fe, Co, Ni) intermetallics are particularly elusive from a synthetic standpoint. Here we report the low-temperature solution synthesis of the L12 (Cu3Au-type) intermetallic compounds Au3Fe, Au3Co, and Au3Ni using n-butyllithium as a reducing agent. Reaction pathway studies for the Au3Co system indicate that Au nucleates first, followed by Co incorporation to form the intermetallic. The nonequilibrium intermetallic nanocrystals have been characterized by powder XRD, TEM, EDS, selected area electron diffraction, and nanobeam electron diffraction, which collectively confirm the compositions and superlattice structures.

Shape-controlled metal nanoparticles are of interest because of their wide range of properties that are useful for applications that include optics, electronics, magnetism, and catalysis. Indium metal is an attractive target for nanoparticle synthesis because it is superconducting, plasmonically active, and is a component in low-melting solders and solid-state lubricants. Indium nanoparticles are typically synthesized using harsh physical or chemical techniques, and rigorous shape control is difficult. Here we present a simple and robust kinetically controlled process for synthesizing shape-controlled indium nanoparticles. By controlling the rate of dropwise addition of a solution of NaBH4 in tetraethylene glycol to an alcoholic solution of InCl3 and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), indium nanoparticles are formed with shapes that include high aspect ratio nanowires and uniform octahedra and truncated octahedra. The zero-dimensional indium nanoparticles exhibit an SPR band centered around 400 nm, and all morphologies are superconducting (Tc = 3.4 K) with higher critical fields than bulk indium.

When reacted with trioctylphosphine at approximately 360 degrees C, rhodium nanocrystals convert to rhodium phosphide Rh(2)P nanocrystals. Careful control over synthetic variables, such as temperature, stabilizing ligands, and cosolvents, can result in Rh(2)P nanocrystals with shapes that reflect the Rh nanocrystal templates. Accordingly, Rh nanocrystals with multipod, cube- and triangle-derived shapes convert to Rh(2)P nanocrystals that maintain the shape of their Rh precursors. Both dense and hollow Rh(2)P nanocrystals can be generated using a single unified chemical conversion strategy. These empirical guidelines for generating a morphologically diverse library of Rh(2)P nanocrystals provide important insights into shape conservation using nanocrystal templates and will likely be portable to other multielement systems for which rigorous shape-controlled synthesis remains challenging.

The ability to control the shape of metal nanocrystals is critical to applications such as catalysis, magnetism, and plasmonics. Despite significant advances in controlling the shapes of single-metal nanocrystals, rigorous shape control of multimetal nanocrystals remains challenging, and has been limited largely to alloy systems of similar metals. Here we describe a robust strategy that produces shape-controlled intermetallic nanocrystals involving elements of notably different reduction potentials, reduction kinetics, and reactivity. The approach utilizes shape- and size-controlled beta-Sn nanocrystals as reactive templates that can be converted into binary M-Sn (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Pd) intermetallic compounds by reaction with appropriate metal salt solutions under reducing conditions. The result, demonstrated in detail for the FeSn2 system, is a variety of nanostructures with morphologies that include spheres, cubes, hollow squares, U-shaped structures, nanorods, and nanorod dimers. Our experiments demonstrate a size- and shape-dependent reactivity toward the formation of hollow FeSn2 nanostructures and provide empirical guidelines for the formation of other intermetallic nanocrystals. In addition to those of FeSn2, nanocrystals of intermetallic PdSn, CoSn3, and NiSn3 can be formed using this same chemical conversion strategy.

Metallurgical materials, including intermetallic compounds, are notoriously inert toward low-temperature reactivity. However, as nanocrystals, their reactivity is significantly enhanced. Here we show that intermetallic PtSn and AuCu nanocrystals can be converted, in solution at low temperatures, into derivative intermetallics. For example, PtSn can be converted into PtSn2 and Pt3Sn by reaction with SnCl2 and K2PtCl6, respectively. The reactions are also reversible, for example, the sequences PtSn --> PtSn2 --> PtSn and PtSn --> Pt3Sn --> PtSn are all readily achievable. The strategy also allows nanocrystalline AuCu to be successfully converted into AuCu3 via reaction with Cu(C2H3O2)2.H2O, suggesting that this approach may be general.

Hollow metal nanospheres are of interest for a variety of academic and technological applications, including drug delivery, catalysis, plasmonics, and lightweight structural composites. Despite recent advances in synthesizing metal nanostructures with controlled morphologies, there are very few reports of hollow bimetallic nanospheres, although such systems promise to offer advantages over single-metal systems. Here, were report a one-pot synthetic strategy for accessing hollow CoPt nanospheres with a Co-Pt alloy structure. The approach utilizes an in situ Co template and exploits galvanic displacement reactions to selectively dissolve the Co core while depositing a Pt shell. The combination of reducing conditions and a polymer stabilizer appears to allow the Co and Pt to co-reduce and form a Co-Pt fcc alloy phase with a morphology that is templated by the sacrificial Co core. The hollow CoPt nanospheres, which show magnetic hysteresis at low temperatures, are thermally stable up to 300 degrees C. The approach, which adds to a growing toolbox of reactions that yield morphologically controlled magnetic CoPt and FePt nanomaterials, is likely to be general for a variety of alloy systems.

Ternary intermetallic compounds, which possess a wide variety of important properties with both academic and technological relevance, are typically synthesized using traditional high-temperature methods. Here, we demonstrate that the polyol method, which is used extensively to synthesize nanocrystals and nanocrystalline powders of metals and simple binary compounds, serves as an effective low-temperature exploratory medium for synthesizing new ordered ternary intermetallics as nanocrystals. Accordingly, we describe the synthesis and structural characterization of AuCuSn2 and AuNiSn2, which adopt an ordered NiAs-type superstructure that is not observed using equilibrium synthetic methods. AuCuSn2 forms in solution of 120 degrees C as well-formed nanocrystals, and the ordered phase is stable up to 450 degrees C. AuNiSn2 behaves similarly to AuCuSn2.

Intermetallic compounds and alloys are traditionally synthesized by heating mixtures of metal powders to high temperatures for long periods of time. A low-temperature solution-based alternative has been developed, and this strategy exploits the enhanced reactivity of nanoparticles and the nanometer diffusion distances afforded by binary nanocomposite precursors. Prereduced metal nanoparticles are combined in known ratios, and they form nanomodulated composites that rapidly transform into intermetallics and alloys upon heating at low temperatures. The approach is general in terms of accessible compositions, structures, and morphologies. Multiple compounds in the same binary system can be readily accessed; e.g., AuCu, AuCu3, Au3Cu, and the AuCu-II superlattice are all accessible in the Au-Cu system. This concept can be extended to other binary systems, including the intermetallics FePt3, CoPt, CuPt, and Cu3Pt and the alloys Ag-Pt, Au-Pd, and Ni-Pt. The ternary intermetallic Ag2Pd3S can also be rapidly synthesized at low temperatures from a nanocomposite precursor comprised of Ag2S and Pd nanoparticles. Using this low-temperature solution-based approach, a variety of morphologically diverse nanomaterials are accessible: surface-confined thin films (planar and nonplanar supports), free-standing monoliths, nanomesh materials, inverse opals, and dense gram-scale nanocrystalline powders of intermetallic AuCu. Importantly, the multimetallic materials synthesized using this approach are functional, yielding a room-temperature Fe-Pt ferromagnet, a superconducting sample of Ag2Pd3S (Tc = 1.10 K), and a AuPd4 alloy that selectively catalyzes the formation of H2O2 from H2 and O2. Such flexibility in the synthesis and processing of functional intermetallic and alloy materials is unprecedented.
