Photovoltaic technology requires light-absorbing materials that are highly efficient, lightweight, low cost and stable during operation. Organolead halide perovskites constitute a highly promising class of materials, but suffer limited stability under ambient conditions without heavy and costly encapsulation. Here, we report ultrathin (3 μm), highly flexible perovskite solar cells with stabilized 12% efficiency and a power-per-weight as high as 23 W g(-1). To facilitate air-stable operation, we introduce a chromium oxide-chromium interlayer that effectively protects the metal top contacts from reactions with the perovskite. The use of a transparent polymer electrode treated with dimethylsulphoxide as the bottom layer allows the deposition-from solution at low temperature-of pinhole-free perovskite films at high yield on arbitrary substrates, including thin plastic foils. These ultra-lightweight solar cells are successfully used to power aviation models. Potential future applications include unmanned aerial vehicles-from airplanes to quadcopters and weather balloons-for environmental and industrial monitoring, rescue and emergency response, and tactical security applications.

Spectroscopic measurements in the infrared range combined with electrochemistry are a powerful technique for investigation of organic semiconductors to track changes during oxidation and reduction (p- and n-doping) processes. For these measurements it is important that the studied material, mostly deposited as a thin film on an internal reflection element, does not dissolve during this characterization. In this study we introduce a technique that allows infrared spectroelectrochemical characterization of films of these materials for the first time. In many cases so far this has been impossible, due to solubility in the oxidized and/or reduced form. Thin film electronics fabricated with non-toxic and abundant materials are enabling for emerging bioelectronic technologies. Herein complementary-like inverters comprising transistors using 6,6'-dichloroindigo as the semiconductor and trimethylsilyl-cellulose (TMSC) films on anodized aluminum as bilayer dielectric layer are demonstrated. The inverters operate both in the first and third quadrant, exhibiting a maximum static gain of 22 and a noise margin of 58% at a supply voltage of 14 V. (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH &Co. We report on the photophysics of N,N'-di(t-butoxycarbonyl)indigos (tBOC indigos), finding that reversible photochemical trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization reactions proceed with high quantum yields (0.10-0.46). Absorption of wavelengths in the 500-600 nm region induces trans-cis isomerism, while blue light leads to the reverse cis-trans process. Like their parent indigos, trans-BOC indigos have low fluorescence yields (∼1 × 10(-3)), while the cis isomers have no measurable emission. These compounds are the first examples of photoisomerizable indigoid dyes in which photochemical isomerism effectively outcompetes radiative decay processes. Though indigo dyes typically have poor solubility in organic solvents, tBOC indigos can be dissolved at concentrations up to 8 w% in common organic solvents like acetone. Furthermore, unlike other photoisomerizable indigoids, tBOC indigos are not sensitive to quenching by proton and electron donors. These features, combined with high quantum yields of reversible photoisomerism induced by relatively low-energy photons (∼2 eV), make tBOC indigo derivatives potentially interesting for photochromic applications, such as photomechanically actuated materials.

Organic pigments such as indigos, quinacridones, and phthalocyanines are widely produced industrially as colorants for everyday products as various as cosmetics and printing inks. Herein we introduce a general procedure to transform commercially available insoluble microcrystalline pigment powders into colloidal solutions of variously sized and shaped semiconductor micro- and nanocrystals. The synthesis is based on the transformation of the pigments into soluble dyes by introducing transient protecting groups on the secondary amine moieties, followed by controlled deprotection in solution. Three deprotection methods are demonstrated: thermal cleavage, acid-catalyzed deprotection, and amine-induced deprotection. During these processes, ligands are introduced to afford colloidal stability and to provide dedicated surface functionality and for size and shape control. The resulting micro- and nanocrystals exhibit a wide range of optical absorption and photoluminescence over spectral regions from the visible to the near-infrared. Due to excellent colloidal solubility offered by the ligands, the achieved organic nanocrystals are suitable for solution processing of (opto)electronic devices. As examples, phthalocyanine nanowire transistors as well as quinacridone nanocrystal photodetectors, with photoresponsivity values by far outperforming those of vacuum deposited reference samples, are demonstrated. The high responsivity is enabled by photoinduced charge transfer between the nanocrystals and the directly attached electron-accepting vitamin B2 ligands. The semiconducting nanocrystals described here offer a cheap, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly alternative to inorganic nanocrystals as well as a new paradigm for obtaining organic semiconductor materials from commercial colorants.

This work investigates the photoinduced energy transfer from poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), as a donor material, to fac-(2,2'-bipyridyl)Re(CO)3Cl, as a catalyst acceptor, for its potential application towards CO2 reduction. Photoluminescence quenching experiments reveal dynamic quenching through resonance energy transfer in solid donor/acceptor mixtures and in solid/liquid systems. The bimolecular reaction rate constant at solution-film interfaces for the elementary reaction of the excited state with the quencher material could be determined as 8.8(±1.4)×10(11)  L mol(-1)  s(-1) by using Stern-Volmer analysis. This work shows that PVK is an effective and cheap absorber material that can act efficiently as a redox photosensitizer in combination with fac-(2,2'-bipyridyl)Re(CO)3Cl as a catalyst acceptor, which might lead to possible applications in photocatalytic CO2 reduction., (© 2014 The Authors. Newly synthesized organic electronics materials are often available in submicrogram amounts only. Photoelectrochemical scanning droplet cell microscopy is a powerful method that allows a comprehensive characterisation of such small amounts including oxidation, reduction potentials, doping, determination of charge carriers, band gap, charge capacity, over-oxidation sensitivity and many more. Localized photoelectrochemical characterization of the poly[4,8-bis-substituted-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b0]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-4-substituted-thieno [3,4-b] thiophene-2,6-diyl] (PBDTTT-c) and PBDTTT-c:PCBM bulk heterojunction was performed using photoelectrochemical scanning droplet cell microscopy (PE-SDCM). The optical properties and the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function, of the polymer were determined using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The photoelectrochemical characterizations were performed in a three and two electrode configuration of PE-SDCM under laser and white light illumination. The effect of illumination was characterized using dark/illumination sequences. The stability of the photocurrent was studied using longer term (600 s) illumination. Finally the effect of cell configuration and illumination conditions on the photovoltage was studied.

A 2,2'-bipyridyl-containing poly(arylene-ethynylene)-alt-poly(arylene-vinylene) polymer, acting as a light-harvesting ligand system, was synthesized and coupled to an organometallic rhodium complex designed for photocatalytic NAD(+)/NADH reduction. The material, which absorbs over a wide spectral range, was characterized by using various analytical techniques, confirming its chemical structure and properties. The dielectric function of the material was determined from spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. Photocatalytic reduction of nucleotide redox cofactors under visible light irradiation (390-650 nm) was performed and is discussed in detail. The new metal-containing polymer can be used to cover large surface areas (e.g. glass beads) and, due to this immobilization step, can be easily separated from the reaction solution after photolysis. Because of its high stability, the polymer-based catalyst system can be repeatedly used under different reaction conditions for (photo)chemical reduction of NAD(+). With this concept, enzymatic, photo-biocatalytic systems for solar energy conversion can be facilitated, and the precious metal catalyst can be recycled.

Nanostructured hybrid thin films of CuSCN and rhodamine B (RB) are electrochemically self-assembled (ESA) by cathodic electrolysis in an ethanol/water mixture containing Cu 2+ , SCN - , and RB. By selecting the solvent, Cu 2+ /SCN - ratio, and the concentration of RB, we demonstrate several control parameters in the film formation. High loading of RB into the film has been achieved to reach a CuSCN:RB volume ratio of approximately 2:1. The RB solid could almost completely be extracted from the hybrid film by soaking the film in dimethylacetamide (DMA), leading to a large increase of the surface area. The crystallographic orientation of the nanostructure with respect to the substrate can be controlled. Efficient quenching of fluorescence of RB has been observed for the CuSCN/RB hybrid film, implying hole injection from RB excited state to CuSCN. Photoelectrochemical study on the porous crystalline CuSCN obtained after the DMA treatment and sensitized with RB revealed sensitized photocathodic action under visible light illumination, indicating the potential usefulness of the porous CuSCN electrodes for construction of tandem dye-sensitized solar cells.

Limiting anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions constitutes a major issue faced by scientists today. Herein we report an efficient way of controlled capture and release of carbon dioxide using nature inspired, cheap, abundant and non-toxic, industrial pigment namely, quinacridone. An electrochemically reduced electrode consisting of a quinacridone thin film (ca. 100 nm thick) on an ITO support forms a quinacridone carbonate salt. The captured CO2 can be released by electrochemical oxidation. The amount of captured CO2 was quantified by FT-IR. The uptake value for electrochemical release process was 4.61 mmol g(-1). This value is among the highest reported uptake efficiencies for electrochemical CO2 capture. New symmetrical arylene bisimide derivatives formed by using electron-donating-electron-accepting systems were synthesized. They consist of a phthalic diimide or naphthalenediimide core and imine linkages and are end-capped with thiophene, bithiophene, and (ethylenedioxy)thiophene units. Moreover, polymers were obtained from a new diamine, N , N '-bis(5-aminonaphthalenyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-dicarboximide and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde or 2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-dicarboxaldehyde. The prepared azomethine diimides exhibited glass-forming properties. The obtained compounds emitted blue light with the emission maximum at 470 nm. The value of the absorption coefficient was determined as a function of the photon energy using spectroscopic ellipsometry. All compounds are electrochemically active and undergo reversible electrochemical reduction and irreversible oxidation processes as was found in cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) studies. They exhibited a low electrochemically (DPV) calculated energy band gap ( E g ) from 1.14 to 1.70 eV. The highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels and E g were additionally calculated theoretically by density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The photovoltaic properties of two model compounds as the active layer in organic solar cells in the configuration indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-(ethylenedioxy)thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/active layer/Al under an illumination of 1.3 mW/cm 2 were studied. The device comprising poly(3-hexylthiophene) with the compound end-capped with bithiophene rings showed the highest value of V oc (above 1 V). The conversion efficiency of the fabricated solar cell was in the range of 0.69-0.90%.

Rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes carrying substituted bis(arylimino)acenaphthene ligands (BIAN-R) have been tested as potential catalysts for the two-electron reduction of carbon dioxide. Cyclic voltammetric studies as well as controlled potential electrolysis experiments were performed using CO2-saturated solutions of the complexes in acetonitrile and acetonitrile-water mixtures. Faradaic efficiencies of more than 30 % have been determined for the electrocatalytic production of CO. The effects of ligand substitution patterns and water content of the reaction medium on the catalytic performance of the new catalysts are discussed., (© 2014 The Authors. The use of a p-type inorganic semiconductor to form a nanorod scaffold within a polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cell is reported. The performance of this cell is compared to those made of the commonly used n-type scaffold of ZnO, which has been reported many times in the literature. The scaffold is designed to improve charge-carrier collection by increased mobility in thicker samples. Observations show that generally the device performance shows a negative correlation to nanorod length. Photoelectrochemical characterization of the regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was performed using an adapted version of a photoelectrochemical scanning droplet cell microscope (PE-SDCM). The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function were determined using spectroscopic ellipsometry in order to identify the absorption region of the polymer. Detailed photoelectrochemical experiments were performed for the thin polymer layer contacted with 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in propylene carbonate as well as with an electrolyte containing a 5.4 mM ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. The effect of the illumination on the P3HT covered WE in contact with both the pure electrolyte and an electrolyte containing a ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple was studied using dark/illumination sequences. The stability of the photovoltaic effect was characterized using long term current transients. Finally, the photoelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy was applied to determine the electrical properties of the P3HT in the dark and under illumination.

Indigo and its derivatives are dyes and pigments with a long and distinguished history in organic chemistry. Recently, applications of this 'old' structure as a functional organic building block for organic electronics applications have renewed interest in these molecules and their remarkable chemical and physical properties. Natural-origin indigos have been processed in fully bio-compatible field effect transistors, operating with ambipolar mobilities up to 0.5 cm(2) /Vs and air-stability. The synthetic derivative isoindigo has emerged as one of the most successful building-blocks for semiconducting polymers for plastic solar cells with efficiencies > 5%. Another isomer of indigo, epindolidione, has also been shown to be one of the best reported organic transistor materials in terms of mobility (∼2 cm(2) /Vs) and stability. This progress report aims to review very recent applications of indigoids in organic electronics, but especially to logically bridge together the hereto independent research directions on indigo, isoindigo, and other materials inspired by historical dye chemistry: a field which was the root of the development of modern chemistry in the first place., (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The electrochemical oxidation of a next generation low bandgap high performance photovoltaic material namely poly[4,8-bis-substituted-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b0]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-4-substituted-thieno[3,4-b] thiophene-2,6-diyl] (PBDTTT-c) thin film was investigated using a scanning droplet cell microscope. Cyclic voltammetry was used for the basic characterization of the oxidation/doping of PBDTTT-c. Application of the different final potentials during the electrochemical study provides a close look to the oxidation kinetics. The electrical properties of both doped and undoped PBDTTT-c were analyzed in situ by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy giving the possibility to correlate the changes in the doping level with the subsequent changes in the resistance and capacitance. As a result one oxidation peak was found during the cyclic voltammetry and in potentiostatic measurements. From Mott-Schottky analysis a donor concentration of 2.3 × 10 20  cm -3 and a flat band potential of 1.00 V vs. SHE were found. The oxidation process resulted in an increase of the conductivity by two orders of magnitude reaching a maximum for the oxidized form of 1.4 S cm -1 .

Hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) is a relatively strong, highly directional, and specific noncovalent interaction present in many organic molecules, and notably is responsible for supramolecular ordering in biological systems. The H-bonding interactions play a role in many organic electrically conducting materials - in particular in those related to biology, e.g. melanin and indigo. This article aims to highlight recent work on application of nature-inspired H-bonded organic molecules in organic electronic devices. Three topics are covered in this brief review: (1) electrical and ionic conduction in natural H-bonded systems, (2) semiconducting properties of H-bonded organic pigments, and (3) exploitation of H-bonding for supramolecular assembly of organic conductors. H-bonding interactions are ubiquitous in biology, thus making the study of H-bonded organic semiconductors highly pertinent where interfacing of electronics with biological systems is desired.

Mixed ionic/electronic conduction in conducting polymers introduces new physics/chemistry and an additional functionality in organic optoelectronic devices. The incorporation of an ionic species in a conjugated polymer matrix results in the increase in electrical conductivity associated with the electrochemical doping of the material. In recent years polymer light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have been demonstrated. In such electrochemical optoelectronic devices, mobile ions facilitate the efficient injection of electronic charge carriers creating " in situ " doping regions near the electrodes and lead to efficient electroluminescence light emission. Here, we introduce the same concept of an LEC in the organic field effect transistors (OFETs). The presence of both electronic and ionic charge carriers in the active layers of OFETs brings high charge carrier mobility and light emission even using symmetric source and drain metal electrodes.

Conjugated PPV-PPE copolymer has been investigated in organic solar cells in combination with twelve different fullerene derivatives. It was shown that the length of solubilizing alkyl chains in the fullerene derivative structures correlates well with the performance of photovoltaic cells.

This work reports on the investigation of the photosensitive polymer poly(diphenyl bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylate) (PPNB), which undergoes the photo-Fries rearrangement upon illumination with UV-light, used as interfacial layers in organic electronic devices. Two cases were investigated: the use of a blend of PPNB with poly-vinylcarbazole (PVK) as an interlayer in para-sexiphenyl (PSP) based organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and the use of PPNB as gate dielectric layer in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). The photo-Fries rearrangement reaction causes a change of the polymer chemical structure resulting in a change of its physical and chemical properties. The electroluminescence spectra and emission of the PSP OLEDs are not affected when fabricated with a non-UV-illuminated PPNB:PVK blend. However, the electroluminescence is totally quenched in those OLEDs fabricated with UV-illuminated PPNB:PVK blend. Although the dielectric constant of PPNB increases upon UV-treatment, it is demonstrated that those OFETs built with UV-treated PPNB as gate dielectric have lower performance than those OFETs built with non-UV-treated PPNB. Furthermore, the effect of the UV-illumination of PPNB and PPNB:PVK blend on the growth of the small molecules C 60 and PSP has been studied by atomic force microscopy. Using photolithography, this kind of photochemistry can be performed to spatially control and tune the optical and electrical performance of organic electronic devices.

Application-specific requirements for future lighting, displays and photovoltaics will include large-area, low-weight and mechanical resilience for dual-purpose uses such as electronic skin, textiles and surface conforming foils. Here we demonstrate polymer-based photovoltaic devices on plastic foil substrates less than 2 μm thick, with equal power conversion efficiency to their glass-based counterparts. They can reversibly withstand extreme mechanical deformation and have unprecedented solar cell-specific weight. Instead of a single bend, we form a random network of folds within the device area. The processing methods are standard, so the same weight and flexibility should be achievable in light emitting diodes, capacitors and transistors to fully realize ultrathin organic electronics. These ultrathin organic solar cells are over ten times thinner, lighter and more flexible than any other solar cell of any technology to date.

In situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry during oxidation (p-doping) and reduction (n-doping) of three phenyl-substituted polythiophenes, namely POPT, PEOPT and POMeOPT is presented. All the three phenyl substituted polythiophenes show both n- and p-doping. The infrared active vibration (IRAV) patterns obtained during electrochemical oxidation (p-doping) and reduction (n-doping) are compared. HOMO and LUMO energy levels are estimated from cyclic voltammetric experiments and from IRAV patterns during oxidation and reduction. A comparison shows that the standard graphical procedure to determine the onset of oxidation and reduction peaks in the cyclic voltammogram can be improved using in situ spectroscopy.

To provide truly transparent solar cells for power window applications, both semiconductor and electrode materials have to have a very low absorption over as much of the visible spectrum as possible. We present some promising visible transparent semiconductor combinations, namely zinc-phthalocyanine or zinc-naphthalocyanine together with soluble fullerenes in conjunction with a method for obtaining highly transparent thin metal films by tuning the interference patterns in the multilayer organic solar cells structure. In an optimal combination, solar cells with an efficiency of about 0.5 % and a peak transparency of more than 60 % in the visible part of the spectrum were fabricated.

We report on the photovoltaic performance of bulk heterojunction solar cells using novel nanoparticles of 6-palmitate ascorbic acid surface modified TiO(2) as an electron acceptor embedded into the donor poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT) matrix. Devices were fabricated by using P3HT with varying amounts of red TiO(2) nanoparticles (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 w-w ratio). The devices were characterized by measuring current-voltage characteristics under simulated AM 1.5 conditions. Incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE) was spectrally resolved. The nanoscale morphology of such organic/inorganic hybrid blends was also investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM).
