A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes with phenolic ethynyl ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical and sensing properties towards anions such as fluoride, acetate and dihydrogenphosphate have been investigated. These complexes show a colorimetric response and fluorescence quenching in the presence of anions including fluoride, acetate and dihydrogenphosphate, and selective sensing towards fluoride in some cases. The sensing mechanism has been investigated by spectrophotometric and 1H NMR titration.

Reaction of oxo-centered Ru(3)(III,III,III) precursor [Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py)(2)(CH(3)OH)](PF(6)) (1) with 1 equiv of 2,2'-azobispyridine (abpy) or 2,2'-azobis(5-chloropyrimidine) (abcp) induced the formation of stable Ru(3)(III,III,II) derivatives [Ru(3)O(OAc)(5){mu-eta(1)(N),eta(2)(N,N)-L}(py)(2)](PF(6)) (L = abpy (2), abcp (3)). As established in the structure of 3 by X-ray crystallography, 2 or 3 is derived from 1 by substitution of the axial methanol and one of the bridging acetates in the parent Ru(3)O(OAc)(6) cluster core with abpy or abcp in an mu-eta(1)(N),eta(2)(N,N) bonding mode. Reduction of 3 by hydrazine induces isolation of one-electron reduced neutral Ru(3)(III,II,II) product Ru(3)O(OAc)(5){mu-eta(1)(N),eta(2)(N,N)-abcp}(py)(2) (3a). As revealed by electrochemical and spectroscopic studies, substituting one of the bridging acetates in the parent Ru(3)O(OAc)(6) cluster core by abcp or abpy modifies dramatically the electronic and redox characteristics in the triruthenium derivatives. Relative to that for the parent compound [Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py)(3)](PF(6)) (E(1/2) = -0.46 V), triruthenium-based redox potential in the redox process Ru(3)O(III,III,III)/Ru(3)O(III,III,II) is significantly anodic-shifted to E(1/2) = +0.36 V for 2 and E(1/2) = +0.53 V for 3. Furthermore, the anodic shifts of redox potentials are progressively enhanced with a decrease of the formal oxidation states in the triruthenium cluster cores. As a consequence of remarkable positive shifts for redox potentials, the low-valence Ru(3)(III,III,II) and Ru(3)(III,II,II) species are stabilized and accessible.

Heterododecanuclear Pt(6)Ln(6) (Ln = Nd, Yb) complexes of 4-ethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine (HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]Cbpy), prepared using emissive Pt(Me(3)SiC[triple bond, length as m-dash]Cbpy)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]Cbpy)(2) as an alkynyl bridging "ligand", afford sensitized near-infrared (NIR) lanthanide luminescence by Pt --> Ln energy transfer from both Pt(bpy)(acetylide)(2) and Pt(2)(dppm)(2)(acetylide)(2) chromophores.

Preparation and characterization of a series of rodlike binuclear ruthenium polyynediyl complexes capped with redox-active organometallic fragments [(bph)(PPh3)2Ru]+ (bph=N-(benzoyl)-N'-(picolinylidene)-hydrazine) or [(Phtpy)(PPh3)2Ru]2+ (Phtpy=4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine) have been carried out. The length of the molecular rods is extended by successive insertion of 2,5-thiophene or 1,4-phenylene spacers in the bridging ligands. Oxidation of thiophene-containing Ru2II,II complexes induces isolation of stable Ru2II,III or Ru2III,III species. Electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR spectral studies demonstrate that the polyynediyl bridges with 2,5-thiophene units are more favorable for metal-metal charge transfer compared with those containing the same number of 1,4-phenylene units. Successive increase of thiophene spacers in mixed-valence complexes {RuII}-CC(C4H2S)mCC-{RuIII} (m=1, 2, 3) induced a smooth transition from almost electronic delocalization (m=1) to localization (m=3). For binuclear ruthenium complexes with intramolecular electron transfer transmitted across nine Ru-C and C-C bonds, electronic conveying capability follows {Ru}-CC(CC)2CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(C4H2S)CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(C6H4)CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(CH=CH)2CC-{Ru}. It is revealed that molecular wires capped with electron-rich (bph)(PPh3)2Ru endgroups are much more favorable for electronic communication than the corresponding electron-deficient (Phtpy)(PPh3)2Ru-containing counterparts. The intermetallic electronic communication is fine-tuned by modification of both the bridging spacers and the ancillary ligands.

Heteroheptanuclear ReM6 (M = Cu 2, Ag 3) complexes of 5,5-diethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine were prepared by the reaction of [M2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) with the precursor compound Re(Me3SiC[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3)(CO)3Cl in the presence of potassium fluoride by fluoride-catalyzed desilylation. When [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ reacts directly with Me3SiC[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3, a binuclear CuI complex [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(SiMe3C[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3)2]2+ (4) was isolated. Further addition of [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ into a THF-MeOH (3:1, v/v) solution of 4 in the presence of potassium fluoride induced isolation of a tetradecanuclear CuI14 complex [Cu14(mu-dppm)14(C[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]C)2]10+, which is composed of a binuclear Cu2(mu-dppm)2 and four triangular trinuclear Cu3 units. Both heteroheptanuclear ReIMI6 and tetradecanuclear CuI14 complexes display luminescence in both solid states and dichloromethane solutions at room temperature with emissive lifetimes in the range of microseconds. The dual emissive feature for the ReM6 and CuI14 complexes is ascribed tentatively to originate from both MLCT [d(Re/Cu) -->pi* (bpy)] and LMCT (acetylide --> M3) transitions. .

A remarkable cluster-cluster interaction is operative in dimers of delocalized Ru3O(OAc)5(py)2 clusters with ortho-metallated 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym) in an unprecedented mu4-eta1(C),eta1(C),eta2(N,N),eta2(N,N) bonding mode; interconversion of the dimeric species [{Ru3O(OAc)5(py)2}2(micro4-bpym)]n+ (n = 0, 1 or 2) with different charges is attainable by chemical oxidation or reduction.

Incorporation of diplatinum complex Pt2(micro-dppm)2(bpyC[triple bond]C)4 or Pt2(mu-dppm)2(phenC[triple bond]C)4 with Ln(hfac)3(H2O)2 (Ln = Nd, Eu, Yb) gave a series of Pt2Ln2 and Pt2Ln4 bimetallic arrays, in which the excitation of d(Pt) -->pi*(R-C[triple bond]C) MLCT absorption induces sensitisation of lanthanide luminescence through efficient d --> f energy transfer from Pt(II) alkynyl chromophores.

Polynuclear heterovalent Au(III)-M(I) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) cluster complexes [Au(III)Cu(I)8(mu-dppm)3(tdt)5]+ (1), [Au(III)3Ag(I)8(mu-dppm)4(tdt)8]+ (2), and [Au(III)Au(I)4(mu-dppm)4(tdt)2]3+ (3) were prepared by reaction of [Au(III)(tdt)2]- (tdt = toluene-3,4-dithiolate) with 2 equiv of [M(I)2(dppm)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane). Complex 3 originates from incorporation of one [Au(III)(tdt)2]- with two [Au(I)2(dppm)2]2+ components through Au(III)-S-Au(I) linkages. Formation of complexes 1 and 2, however, involves rupture of metal-ligand bonds in the metal components and recombination between the ligands and the metal atoms. The Au(tdt)2 component connects to four M(I) atoms through Au(III)-S-M(I) linkages in syn and anti conformations in complexes 1 (M = Cu) and 3 (M = Au), respectively, but in both syn and anti conformations in complex 2 (M = Ag). The tdt ligand exhibits five types of bonding modes in complexes 1-3, chelating Au(III) or M(I) atoms as well as bridging Au(III)-M(I) or M(I)-M(I) atoms in different orientations. Although complexes 1 and 2 are nonemissive, Au(III)Au(I)(4) complex 3 shows room-temperature luminescence with emission maximum at 555 nm (tau(em) = 3.1 micros) in the solid state and at 570 nm (tau(em) = 1.5 micros) in acetonitrile solution.

Reaction of oxo-centered triruthenium precursor compound [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(CH3OH)](PF6) (1) with 1.3 equiv of bipyridine ligand at ambient temperature gave oxo-centered triruthenium derivatives [Ru3O(OAc)5{micro-eta1(C),eta2(N,N)bipyridine}(py)2](PF6) (bipyridine = 4,4'-dibutyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy) (2),4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy) (3), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) (4), 5,5'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine (Br2bpy) (5), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) (6)). Formation of compounds 2-6 involved substitution of the axial methanol and one of bridging acetates in the precursor compound 1 by an orthometalated bipyridine. Reduction of 2 and 4 by addition of excess hydrazine gave one-electron-reduced neutral products Ru3O(OAc)5(py)2{micro-eta1 (C),eta2(N,N)-bipyridine} (bipyridine = dbbpy (2a), bpy (4a)). As established in the structure of 3 by X-ray crystallography, the orthometalated 2,2'-bipyridine adopts a micro-eta1(C),eta2(N,N) bonding mode. In the 1H NMR spectra of 2-6, the protons of acetate, pyridine, and bipyridine show obvious paramagnetic shifts. Tentative assignments of these proton signals were carried out. Absorption spectra of the bipyridine triruthenium derivatives show characteristic intracluster charge transfer (IC) transitions in the visible to near-infrared region (600-1000 nm) and cluster-to-ligand charge transfer (CLCT) transitions at 320-450 nm. By comparison of the redox data for 2-6, it is concluded that introducing electron-donating substituents to the bipyridine favors stabilizing the [RuIII3]+ and [RuIII2RuII]0 states against disproportionation.

Reaction of Pt(diimine)(edt) (edt = 1,2-ethanedithiolate) with M(2)(dppm)(2)(MeCN)(2)(2+) (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) gave heterotrinuclear complexes [PtCu(2)(edt)(mu-SH)(dppm)(3)](ClO(4)) (11) and [PtCu(2)(diimine)(2)(edt)(dppm)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (diimine = 2,2'-bpyridine (bpy), 12; 4,4'-dibutyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy), 13; phenanthroline (phen), 14; 5-bromophenanthroline (brphen), 15) when M = Cu(I). The reaction, however, afforded tetra- and trinuclear complexes [Pt(2)Ag(2)(edt)(2)(dppm)(2)](SbF(6))(2) (17) and [PtAu(2)(edt)(dppm)(2)](SbF(6))(2) (21) when M = Ag(I) and Au(I), respectively. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectroscopy, (1)H and (31)P NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography for 14, 17, and 18. The Pt(II)Cu(I)(2) heterotrinuclear complexes 11-15 exhibit photoluminescence in the solid states at 298 K and in the frozen acetonitrile glasses at 77 K. It is likely that the emission originates from a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (dithiolate-to-Pt) (3)[p(S) --> d(Pt)] transition for 11 and from an admixture of (3)[d(Cu)/p(S)-pi(diimine)] transitions for 12-16. The Pt(II)(2)Ag(I)(2) heterotetranuclear complexes 17 and 18 are nonemissive in the solid states and in solutions at 298 K but show photoluminescence at 77 K. The Pt(II)Au(I)(2) heterotrinuclear complexes 19-21, however, are luminescent at room temperature in the solid state and in solution. Compounds 19 and 20 afford negative solvatochromism associated with a charge transfer from an orbital of a mixed metal/dithiolate character to a diimine pi orbital.

Unusual AuI-AgI heterometallic complexes [Au5Ag8(mu-dppm)4{1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}(CCC6H4R-4)7]3+ (R = H 1, CH3 2, But 3) were isolated by reactions of polymeric silver arylacetylides (AgCCC6H4R-4)n with binuclear gold component [Au2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), in which cyclotrimerization of arylacetylide -CCC6H4R-4 affords trianion {1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}3- with an unprecedented mu5-bonding mode. Compounds 1(SbF6)3-3(SbF6)3 exhibit intense photoluminescence derived from an MLCT (Au5Ag8 --> CCC6H4R-4) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered excited states.

A simultaneous redox, alkylation, self-assembly reaction under solvothermal conditions afforded a novel copper(I) chain polymer constructed of luminescent Cu3I4- and unprecedented EtS-4-C5H4N+Et components (Et = CH3CH2).

A series of Ag(I)-Cu(I) heteronuclear alkynyl complexes were prepared by reaction of polymeric (MCCC(6)H(4)R-4)(n)() (M = Cu(I) or Ag(I); R = H, CH(3), OCH(3), NO(2), COCH(3)) with [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PXPPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (M' = Ag(I) or Cu(I); X = NH or CH(2)). Heterohexanuclear complexes [Ag(4)Cu(2)(mu-Ph(2)PNHPPh(2))(4)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(4)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 1; CH(3), 2) were afforded when X = NH, and heterooctanuclear complexes [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(6)(MeCN)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 3; CH(3), 4; OCH(3), 5; NO(2), 6) were isolated when X = CH(2). Self-assembly reaction between (MCCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(n) and [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2), however, gave heterohexadecanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](2)(ClO(4))(4) (7). The heterohexanuclear complexes 1 and 2 show a bicapped cubic skeleton (Ag(4)Cu(2)C(4)) consisting of four Ag(I) and two Cu(I) atoms and four acetylide C donors. The heterooctanuclear complexes 3-6 exhibit a waterwheel-like structure that can be regarded as two Ag(3)Cu(CCC(6)H(5))(3) components put together by three bridging Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) ligands. The heterohexadecanuclear complex 7 can be viewed as a dimer of heterooctanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](ClO(4))(2) through the silver and acetyl oxygen (Ag-O = 2.534 (4) A) linkage between two waterwheel-like Ag(6)Cu(2) units. All of the complexes show intense luminescence in the solid states and in fluid solutions. The microsecond scale of lifetimes in the solid state at 298 K reveals that the emission is phosphorescent in nature. The emissive state in compounds 1-5 is likely derived from a (3)LMCT (CCC(6)H(4)R-4 --> Ag(4)Cu(2) or Ag(6)Cu(2)) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered (d --> s) excited state. The lowest lying excited state in compounds 6 and 7 containing electron-deficient 4-nitrophenylacetylide and 4-acetylphenylacetylide, respectively, however, is likely dominated by an intraligand (3)[pi --> pi] character.

Reactions of oxo-centered triruthenium acetate complexes [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(CH3OH)](PF6) (py = pyridine, OAc = CH3COO-) (1) with nearly equimolar amounts of dppa [bis(diphenylphosphino)acetylene] or dppen [trans-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene] gave [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(L)](PF6) (L = dppa, 2; dppen, 3). With 2.4 equiv of 1, the reactions provided diphosphine-linked triruthenium dimers, [[Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2]2(L)](PF6)2 (L = dppa, 4; L = dppen, 5), respectively. Similarly, the reactions of [Ru3O(OAc)6(L')2(MeOH)]+ [L' = dmap (4-(dimethylamino)pyridine), 1a; L' = abco (1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), 1b] with dppen gave dppen-linked dimers, [[Ru3O(OAc)6(dmap)2]2(dppen)](SbF6)2 (6) and [[Ru3O(OAc)6(abco)2]2(dppen)](BF4)2 (7), respectively. The chemical reduction of 2, 4, and 5 by hydrazine afforded one- or two-electron-reduced, neutral products, Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(dppa) (2a), [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2]2(dppa) (4a), and [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2]2(dppen) (5a), respectively. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, ES-MS, UV-vis, IR, and 31P NMR spectroscopies, and cyclic and differential-pulse voltammetries. The molecular structures of compounds 2, 4, 5, 5a, 6, and 7 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 0.1 M (Bu4N)PF6-acetone, the monomers and dimers of triruthenium clusters show reversible and multistep redox responses. The two triruthenium cluster centers in dimers undergo stepwise reductions and oxidations due to the identical redox processes of the individual Ru3O cluster cores, suggesting the presence of electronic communications between them through the conjugated diphosphine spacer. The redox wave splitting mediated by dppa containing an ethynyl group (C triple bond C) is found to be more extensive than that by dppen containing an ethenyl (C=C) one. It appears that the redox wave splitting is enhanced by the introduction of electron-donating substituents on the auxiliary pyridine rings.

A supramolecular cube has been formed by linking WS3Cu3 clusters with bidentate ligands. Eight WS3Cu3 clusters, which have an incomplete cubane-like structure, serve as the three connecting nodes of the cube, while 12 bridging cyanide anions coordinated to copper centers lie along the edges of the cube. Eight chloride anions and four lithium cations are located inside the cube.

Reactions between the building blocks [Ag2(mu-Ph2PXPPh2)2(MeCN)2]2+ and [Pt(C[triple bond]CC6H4R-p)4]2- (R = H, CH3) afforded strongly luminescent acetylide-linked neutral heterohexanuclear complexes Pt2Ag4(mu-Ph2PNPPh2)4 (C[triple bond]CC6H4R-p)4 (R = H, 1; CH3, 2) for X = NH, but a heterotrinuclear complex cation [PtAg2(mu-PPh2CH2PPh2)2 (C[triple bond]CC6H5)2(CH3CN)2]2+ (3(2+)) for X = CH2.

Dicyanamide-bound mononuclear compounds Cp(dppe)FeN(CN)2 (3) and Cp(PPh3)2RuN(CN)2 (4) were isolated in high yields by the reactions of Cp(dppe)FeCl (1) and Cp(PPh3)2RuCl (2), respectively, with excess sodium dicyanamide. Compounds 3 and 4 are excellent precursors for the design of dicyanamide-bridged binuclear complexes [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2N(CN)2](SbF6) (5) and [[Cp(PPh3)2Ru]2N(CN)2](SbF6) (6) by the incorporation with 1 and 2, respectively. Controlling oxidation of 5 with ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate afforded the mixed-valence compound [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2N(CN)2](PF6)2 (5a) which exhibits a broad absorption band in the near-infrared region (centered at 1500 nm, epsilon = 750 cm-1 M-1) due to the intervalence charge transfer of Robin and Day class II mixed-valence system. Tricyanomethanide-bound mononuclear compounds Cp(dppe)FeC(CN)3 (7) and Cp(PPh3)2RuC(CN)3 (8) were prepared by the same methods as 3 and 4 using potassium tricyanomethanide as the starting material instead. The tricyanomethanide-bridged binuclear complexes [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2C(CN)3](CF3SO3) (9) and [[Cp(PPh3)2- Ru]2C(CN)3](SbF6) (10) were prepared by the reactions between 7 and 1 and between 8 and 2, respectively. Cyclic voltammograms of the dicyanamide/tricyanomethanide-bridged binuclear complexes showed stepwise reversible one-electron oxidation waves with the potential separation of the two redox couples in the range 0.14-0.25 V, indicating the demonstrably electronic communication is operative between the organometallic components through a dicyanamide/tricyanomethanide spacer with metal...metal distances more than 7.8 A. Furthermore, the electronic coupling transmitted by the tricyanomethanide is appreciably greater than that by the dicyanamide. The complexes 3-10 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, 1H and 31P NMR, and ES-MS. The crystal structures of 3 and 5-9 were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Self-assembly between the building blocks [M2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (M = Cu or Ag; dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) and M'(aet)2 (aet = 2-aminoethanethiolate) afforded luminescent heterohepta-nuclear complexes [Cu4M'3(mu-dppm)3(mu 3-aet)4(mu-aet)2]4+ (M' = Ni 1; Pd 2) or heterotrinuclear complexes [Ag2M'(mu-dppm)2(mu-aet)2]2+ (M' = Ni 3, Pd 4).
