This preliminary reconnaissance survey is intended to: develop a first estimate as to the potential number, location and characteristics of small-scale (50 kW to 15 MW) hydroelectric sites in Nevada; provide a compilation of various Federal and state laws and regulations, including tax and financing regulations, that affect small-scale hydroelectric development and provide information on sources of small-scale hydroelectric generation hardware and consultants/ contractors who do small scale hydroelectric work. The entire survey has been conducted in the office working with various available data bases. The site survey and site evaluation methods used are described, and data are tabulated on the flow, power potential, predicted capital expenditures required, etc. for 61 potential sites with measured flows and for 77 sites with derived flows. While a number of site testing campaigns are in progress throughout the world, the dominant efforts seem to be associated with plans for very large telescopes. These plans, improved telescope technology, and the realization that astronomical observations from space will put increasing demands on ground-based observing facilities have given new impetus to site identification and to the optimum utilization of existing sites. A most excellent review of the factors involved in site identification is now available in the Proceedings of the ESO Workshop on Site Testing for Future Large Telescopes, edited by A. Ardeberg and L. Woltjer, 1984. These Proceedings and Woolf’s review (1982, Ann. Rev. Astron. Astrophys. 20, 367) provide a solid background of current site evaluation factors.

The environment into which the wastewater is discharged, can be a valuable part of the onsite disposal system. If utilized properly, it can provide excellent treatment at little cost. However, if stressed beyond its assimilative capacity, the system will fail, resulting in a public health hazard or environmental degradation. Therefore, careful site evaluation is a crucial first step of onsite system design.

The ecology of a deepwater (100 meter) dredged material disposal site is described. The physical, chemical, and biological impacts of disposal are analyzed based on historical data and in-situ sampling. A comprehensive management plan is discussed based on these findings. This contribution is a brief outline of site stability evaluation techniques with reference to typical North Sea soil conditions. Elements of site evaluation are outlined, engineering methods described for preliminary assessment of soil liquefaction potential and slope stability during earthquake loading, and results of analyses from North Sea sites discussed. Generally soils on the North Sea continental shelf appear inherently stable. However, potential for slope failures during earthquakes may exist on the continental slope.

Results of preliminary study are presented which was performed under subtask 2.7 of the NTS Terminal Waste Storage Program Plan for 1978. Subtask 2.7 examines the feasibility of locating a nuclear waste repository in a granitic stock or pluton in southern Nevada near the Nevada Test Site (NTS). It is assumed for the purposes of this study that such a repository cannot be located at NTS. This assumption may or may not be correct. This preliminary report does not identify a particular site as being a suitable location for a repository. Nor does it absolutely eliminate a particular site from further consideration. It does, however, answer the basic question of probable suitability of some of the sites and present a systematic method for site evaluation. Since the findings of this initial study have been favorable, it will be followed by more exhaustive and detailed studies of the original 30 sites and perhaps others. In future studies some of the evaluation criteria used in the preliminary study may be modified or eliminated, and new criteria may be introduced.

The Estate Outside the Dwelling is a comparative study of six housing projects located in London and Sheffield, England. The major objective of the study was to learn how residents from family units in different stages in the family life cycle reacted to different building forms and aspects of site design. The focus of the study was, as suggested by the title, on the exterior of the buildings and the spaces between them. While not explicitly stated in the report, another important implicit objective was to provide guidance to local housing authorities as to characteristics of housing design that enhance resident satisfaction.

Final field adjustments to optimize combustion and performance, as well as the comprehensive on site evaluation program performed on this gas turbine, are described in this paper. Included are a description of a series of minor combustion modifications which were easily possible due to the unique single-combustion-chamber design. The primary task during this period was material evaluations for the Diablo Hawk and Hybla Gold events. Tuff, grout, concrete, saturated sand and reconstituted tuff were tested. The material evaluations are used for initial nuclear test site selection, detailed site evaluation (for purposes of insuring successful stemming and containment) and support of related experiments. The majority of the tests were uniaxial strain tests with accompanying physical property and ultrasonic velocity measurements. Additionally, hydrostatic and triaxial compression, heat transfer, burst, and permeability tests were conducted.

Progress in the development of a cost-effective exploration program for low- to moderate-temperature geothermal resources is reported. As part of this program two or three demonstration projects in Arizona will be brought on stream. The site-specific exploration, evaluation and development program as well as the state wide reconnaissance exploration program is continuing. The compilation of data for a geothermal energy resource map of Arizona has commenced. Geological field work was directed towards obtaining a broad overview of Arizona geology and regional reconnissance in the Springerville - St. Johns area. All outside projects are on schedule and the Landsat lineament map and report have been completed.

As part of the NOAO National New Technology Telescope Site Evaluation Project, on-site measurements of thermal infrared sky irradiance, atmospheric turbulence, optical image quality, and meteorological conditions were begun in 1984 on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and Mt. Graham, Arizona. These synoptic measurements will be used to assess the comparative astronomical performance levels of these sites and will provide the basis for a site recommendation matched to the specific requirements of the 15-meter NNTT. This overview describes the observation and analysis procedures employed for this site intercomparison.

An intensive cultural resources archaeological survey with site evaluation was conducted within the Fourche Creek Flood Control Project Area, Pulaski County, Arkansas. The area examined consisted of a 4.45 mile reach of Fourche Creek, a 5.54 mile reach of Rock Creek, and a 1.84 mile reach of Grassy Flat Creek. The project area consists of a corridor approximately 25 m either side of the present banks of these water courses and three designated material disposal areas consisting of approximately 100 acres total. Two sites were discovered. Site 3PU290 was an isolated find and site 3PU291 was a recent, 20th Century farm. Neither site was judged to be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Role of geologists in Soil Conservation Service, particularly in connection with dam building; types of drilling equipment used, organization of parties, and costs of drilling; drilling investigations involving foundations, emergency spillways, borrow material, and embankment drainage; geologic reports and laboratory analyses.

The purpose of this paper is the preparation of environmental criteria to be used to aid future developers, county planning board, and county commissioners in the evaluation of sites for proposed small scale residential developments, and whether that development will have an irreparable environmental impact. The criteria are intended to fill the gap between standards for housing developments and finished design and that of environmental impact of small scale housing developments in Cache County, Utah.

Le projet de recherche Evaluation des systèmes existants pour le suivi à long terme des déformations des ponts a été initié dans le but de préparer sous forme condensée une présentation et une évaluation des systèmes de mesure existants pour le suivi à long terme des déformations de ponts ainsi que des recommandations en vue d’applications particulières. Ce sujet est d’actualité car d’une part il importe de gérer au mieux les ouvrages et les ressources et d’autre part parce que plusieurs cas de déformations importantes de ponts en béton précontraint ont été constatés tant en Suisse qu’à l’étranger ces vingt dernières années. Ce document est premièrement destiné aux maîtres d’ouvrage pour les assister dans le choix des méthodes applicables aux ouvrages dont ils désirent suivre l’évolution et l’organisation des campagnes de mesure. Il doit permettre une utilisation rationnelle des moyens et des méthodes de suivi à long terme des ouvrages. La majorité des méthodes de mesures répertoriées sont bien connues. Le présent document définit leur domaine d’application et leurs limites. Certaines méthodes sont plus récentes et moins connues. Leurs propriétés et leur domaine d’application sont cernés et comparés à ceux des méthodes classiques. Il faut noter que plusieurs domaines de mesure qui ont été investigués sont en période de profonds changements, avec une intégration de plus en plus intime entre diverses méthodes de mesure, rendue possible par l’émergence de nouvelles techniques (positionnement GPS par exemple) et par l’intégration de l’informatique dans une grande partie des opérations de mesure. Il est probable qu’une ou plusieurs des méthodes de mesure nouvelles qui ne sont à l’heure actuelle pas encore mûres pour une application de terrain atteindront ce stade dans les années qui viennent. The research project Evaluation of existing measurement systems for the long-term monitoring of bridge deflections was initiated with the aim to prepare, in a condensed form, a presentation and comparison of the existing measurement systems for the long-term monitoring of bridge deflections, as well as recommendations for special applications. This is a very actual topic, as on the one hand, it is necessary to efficiently manage existing bridges, and on the other hand because several cases of large deflections of post-tensioned concrete bridges have been observed in Switzerland and other countries over the past 20 years. This document is primarily aimed at bridge owners to assist them in the selection of applicable methods to monitor bridges and to organise measurement campaigns. It will facilitate a rational use of available means and methods for the long-term monitoring of bridges. The majority of measurement methods listed are well known. The present document defines their application domain and their limitations. Some methods are more recent and less well known. Their properties and application domain are outlined and compared to those of classical methods. It must be noted that several of the measurement domains investigated are presently undergoing a period of profound changes, with increasingly more intimate interactions between various measurement methods. This convergence is made possible by the emergence of new measurement techniques (GPS positioning for example) and by the integration of computers in a large part of measurement methods. It is likely that one or more of the new measurement methods that are currently nor ready for field development will mature in the coming years. It would be advisable to follow and encourage their development through pilot projects of deflection monitoring.

The positioning of building complexes that are noise sensitive (hospitals) or noise producing (factories) on a new site or changing patterns of land use around the site can result in uncertain noise exposures. Analytical or computer‐based procedures for estimates of noise are useful, but limited. Acoustical scale modeling provides immediate predictions of changes in noise exposure as the positions of buildings, roadways, land profile, and other features are changed. The RANN program of NSF has sponsored MIT to develop an acoustical modeling system usable by engineering groups, environmental agencies, and developmental organizations. A prototype system has been developed and used in field/laboratory comparisons of sound propagation at various sites on the MIT campus. There have been reports recently of interference with EM measurements in the Gippsland area, presumably as a result of Omega site evaluation. In reply to my query, the Minister for Transport, Mr. Nixon, provided the following information (see attached diagrams): "As you are probably aware, seven of the intended eight Omega transmitting facilities are currently in operation. The Australian facility, when it is commissioned will complete the world-wide network. The radio frequencies that are currently being transmitted are shown in the Omega signal format in the attached figure 1. The frequencies are not radiated continuously by each station but only for a segment of time in the 10 second cycle, for example Norway radiates on 10.2 kHz followed by 13.6 kHz and then 11.333 kHz followed by five blank segments. The final signal format has not yet been established and will be an agenda item at a forthcoming Omega Technical Conference in Japan. At this point in time the proposed final signal format is shown in the attached figure 2. You should note that the Australian facility will occupy the Station G position in the signal format.'' The objectives of this note are to bring the matter to the attention of others who may be having difficulty for reason of these tests, and to point out some implications of the developments.
