- Abstract
S ometimes I look at children today, being taken by car from one place to another, and I wonder when they get the chance to have any real fun. When I think back to my childhood, what I remember most is the freedom - to explore on my own, take risks and play the rebel, learn about life for myself. Growing up in the 1930s, in the Polish town of Bielsko, I escaped as soon as I could from the nannies who were supposed to look after me and my brother. They would come to collect me from school, and I'd already be gone - off down the hill on my sledge. At night, I'd slip out alone and go skiing by moonlight - it was much more dangerous, but that was half the fun. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
