Der Arbeit wird zunächst ein theoretischer Teil vorausgehen, in dem die italienische Sportsprache als eine besondere diaphasische Varietät vorgestellt und hinsichtlich ihrer linguistischen Charakteristika und ihres spezifischen Einsatzes in Texten untersucht werden soll. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Metaphern gelegt, welche wegen ihrer sprachlichen Besonderheiten in der Sportsprache besonders häufig zum Einsatz kommen. Diese Doktorarbeit versucht, die Bedeutung „des Reiches der Himmel (Gott)“ (ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν / τοῦ θεοῦ) in den Gleichnissen des Evangelisten Matthäus zu definieren. Dies geschieht durch das Studium der zehn Reichsgleichnisse bei Matthäus (Mt 13,24–30.37–43; 13,31–32; 13,33; 13,44; 13,45–46; 13,47–50; 18,23–35; 20,1–16; 22,1–14; 25,1–13), vor allem ihrer Struktur und Erzählung, mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf deren figurativen Inhalt. Eine genaue Analyse zeigt, dass die nicht-wörtliche Schicht in Form von sogenannten konzeptuellen Metaphern allen zehn Gleichnissen gemeinsam ist und die Kernbotschaft des „Reiches der Himmel“ bei Matthäus darstellt. Nach einer Untersuchung des Begriffes Reich in der Bibel und in der einschlägigen Literatur sowie einer Studie der Gleichnisse und ihrer Bildsprache stützt sich die Arbeit auf die konzeptuelle Metaphertheorie, um drei Hauptmetaphern des Reiches zu identifizieren. Diese Metaphern weisen auf drei vorherrschende Aspekte des Reiches hin: Sie sind die auffälligsten Muster, die auch andere Texte über das Reich prägen, und gründen auf der Erfahrung von Wachstum oder Entwicklung, von Gewinn und Prüfung oder von Gerichtsverhandlungen. Die Dissertation zeigt, dass die Matthäus-Gleichnisse das Reich des Himmels als etwas verstehen, was sich im Prozess der Verwirklichung befindet, was alle Menschen zur Teilnahme aufruft, und gleichzeitig warnen sie davor, dass dessen Vollendung nahe bevorsteht. Die Gleichnisse befassen sich sowohl mit dem Fortschritt des Reichs im Laufe der Zeit als auch mit der unmittelbaren Nähe seiner endgültigen Erfüllung, die eine Beurteilung der Gerechtigkeit jedes Einzelnen mit sich bringen wird. Letztendlich fordert das Reich dazu auf, zu vergeben, barmherzig-gerecht zu sein, seine Forderung anzunehmen (rechtschaffen zu leben) und zu erfüllen., This thesis attempts to define the meaning of “the Kingdom of the Heavens (God)” (ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν/τοῦ θεοῦ) in Matthew’s parables. This is achieved by studying the ten Matthean parables of the Kingdom (Matt 13:24–30.37–43; 13:31–32; 13:33; 13:44; 13:45–46; 13:47–50; 18:23–35; 20:1–16; 22:1–14; 25:1–13), especially their structure and narrative, with particular emphasis on their figurative content. Close analysis reveals that this non-literal layer, in the form of so-called conceptual metaphors, is common to all ten parables and indicative of the core message of the Matthean Kingdom. After an exploration of the concept of the Kingdom in the Bible and in the relevant literature, and an investigation of parables and figurative language, the thesis draws on conceptual metaphor theory to identify three main Kingdom metaphors. These metaphors point to the three dominant aspects of the Kingdom: they are the most conspicuous patterns that shape other Kingdom texts, and are based on the experience of growth or development, gain, and trial. The thesis demonstrates that the Matthean parables depict the Kingdom as being in the process of realisation, calling all people to participate in it, and warning that its consummation is fast approaching. The parables are concerned both with the Kingdom’s progress over time, and the close proximity of its ultimate fulfilment, which will bring a final assessment of each person’s righteousness. The core message of the Kingdom is a call to radical commitment which, if followed, will culminate in an enormous gain. This thesis is based on conceptual metaphor theory as first introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), which considers metaphor to play an essential role in language and human cognition. After offering an overview of the framework of the theory in the first part of the thesis, a study on the metaphors used in the UK referendum on the EU membership on 23 June 2016 is conducted. For this purpose, nine television debates broadcasted before the final election were transcribed and systematically searched. The findings and implications of this study are discussed in the second part of the thesis. The didactic part of the thesis explores the uses of conceptual metaphor for the second language classroom. In order to put the theory into practice, useful teaching materials are offered. An exemplary lesson plan that can help students develop their metaphorical competence is presented. In addition, the possibility of using conceptual metaphor as an organizing tool to expand vocabulary is explored. The concept of organizational identity is long-known within literature. Different perspectives on this topic have a defining question in common, namely “Who are we (as an organization)?”. This question produces inconsistencies when it comes to multiple identities and the search for a ‘true core’. Many researchers endorse the existence of multiple identities within an organization. Thus, multiple (conflicting) answers would be the result for a question that asks for a single answer. An in-depth problematization unveils the underlying root metaphor that causes multiplicity related inconsistencies. After a metaphor critique the rhizomatic metaphor is proposed to solve this multiplicity problem. The rhizomatic organizational identity shifts focus towards relations between different identities, thereby losing all sense of hierarchy between identities. It is believed that identities are equal but competing and rather dynamic than static. Goal setting and implementation is relevant to both organizations and individuals. The author with this research wants to have a deeper look at the core elements of successful goal setting and implementation. This master thesis aims at contributing to a deeper understanding of the research of goal setting, goal implementation and metaphors. The question arises if it is possible to elaborate a holistic metaphor to discuss goal implementation for individuals and organizations at the hand of literature research, conceptualization and testing. The author argues that a metaphor can be created by building a theoretical framework which serves as background for the metaphor. This theoretical framework emerges from literature review regarding individual and organizational goal setting and implementation. In order for the theoretical framework to emerge, the author includes scientific and non-scientific literature. The results from the qualitative testing of the metaphor indicate that the theoretical framework can be implemented into a metaphor which fits a broad variety of individual and organizational goals. It is in result possible to develop a metaphor suitable for both – organizations and individuals. The findings also show potential improvements to the metaphor elaborated by the author that coincide with the key components defined in the theoretical framework and literature review. Moreover, further research possibilities would be interesting to follow to evaluate in depth which key elements of the research can be improved for developing an even more detailed version of the metaphor.
