We report the results of fluid transport experiments in aqueous foams under microgravity. Using optical and electrical methods, the capillary motion of the foam fluid and the local liquid fractions are monitored. We show that foams can be continuously wetted up to high liquid fractions ( approximately 0.3), without any bubble motion instabilities. Data are compared to drainage models: For liquid fractions above 0.2, discrepancies are found and identified. These new results on foam hydrodynamics and structure can be useful for other poroelastic materials, such as plants and biological tissues.

The electrostatic properties and the wetting behaviour of the human hair surface at the nanometric scale have been investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface potential imaging was used to determine the electrostatic properties while non-contact mode AFM was used to investigate the wetting properties of a test liquid, squalane. We have studied natural hair and hair in which different covalently (18-methyleicosanoic acid) and non-covalently bound fatty acids present at the cuticle surface were selectively extracted. This study shows how the removal of these acids causes various profound changes in hair wettability at the cuticle scale.

We investigated the interaction between an anionic polyelectrolyte (carboxymethylcellulose) and cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB) at the air/water interface, using surface tension, ellipsometry, and Brewster angle microscopy techniques. At low surfactant concentration, a synergistic phenomenon is observed due to the co-adsorption of polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes at the interface, which decreases the surface tension. When the surfactant critical aggregation concentration (cac) is reached, the adsorption saturates and the thickness of the adsorbed monolayer remains constant until another characteristic surfactant concentration, C0, is reached, at which all the polymer charges are bound to surfactant in bulk. Above C0, the absorbed monolayer becomes much thicker, suggesting adsorption of bulk aggregates, which have become more hydrophobic due to charge neutralization.

We have studied bubble motion within a column of foam allowed to undergo free drainage. We have measured bubble motion upward with time and as a function of their initial positions. Depending on the gas used, which sets the coarsening and drainage rates, different bubble upward motion types have been identified (constant speed, acceleration or deceleration) and explained in relation with liquid downward flows. The proofs of the consistency between bubble upward motion and liquid downward flow are obtained both by comparing the bubble motion curves to the liquid drainage ones, and by comparing the time variations of the liquid fraction extracted from bubble motion to direct liquid fraction measurements by electrical conductimetry. The agreement between bubble position tracking and electrical conductivity shows in particular that it is possible to determine the drainage regime from such simple bubble motion measurements. This work also allowed us to demonstrate a special case of foam coarsening and expansion, occurring when the foam gas is less soluble than the outside one, caused by diffusion of this external gas into the foam. All these results allow us to build a picture of drainage and coarsening seen from the bubble point of view.

We present a quantitative theory and experiments for the expansion dynamics of domains in stratifying foam films. Foam films containing micelles, colloidal particles or polymer-surfactant complexes often form layered structures and thin in a stepwise fashion: circular domains of lower thickness are formed and expand following a R(t) proportional variant t1/2 law. In the present paper the film is modeled by an incompressible three-dimensional fluid with incompressible surfaces. The film tension difference between the film and domains results in the formation of a rim at the domain boundary and a gradient in film thickness and pressure in the surrounding film. The material transport due to this gradient lets the domains grow. We present experiments utilizing the thin balance method to qualitatively confirm the thinning mechanism and to determine material parameters including local film viscosity of a film composed of 4400 ppm acrylamide/acrylamidomethylpropanesulfonate-copolymer and 0.006 mmol/l dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide solution. We found a film viscosity of about 60 times the bulk viscosity, consistent with previous measurement in the same system but using another method.

We have studied the drainage of foams made from Newtonian and non-Newtonian solutions of different viscosities. Forced-drainage experiments first show that the behavior of Newtonian solutions and of shear-thinning ones (foaming solutions containing either Carbopol or Xanthan) are identical, provided one considers the actual viscosity corresponding to the shear rate found inside the foam. Second, for these fluids, a drainage regime transition occurs as the bulk viscosity is increased, illustrating a coupling between surface and bulk flow in the channels between bubbles. The properties of this transition appear different from the ones observed in previous works in which the interfacial viscoelasticity was varied. Finally, we show that foams made of solutions containing long flexible PolyEthylene Oxide (PEO) molecules counter-intuitively drain faster than foams made with Newtonian solutions of the same viscosity. Complementary experiments made with fluids having all the same viscosity but different responses to elongational stresses (PEO-based Boger fluids) suggest an important role of the elastic properties of the PEO solutions on the faster drainage.

We report results of drainage in aqueous foams of small bubble size D (D=180 microm) prepared with SDS-dodecanol solutions. We have performed free-drainage experiments in which local drainage rates are measured by electrical conductivity and by light scattering techniques. We have investigated the role of the surfactant-cosurfactant mass ratio on the drainage regime. The results confirm that a drainage regime corresponding to a high surface mobility can indeed be found for such small bubbles, and show that an increase in the cosurfactant content can induce a transition to a low surface mobility drainage regime. We show that the transition is not linked to variations of the bulk properties, but rather to variations of the interfacial properties. However, the results show that the added amount of dodecanol to trigger the transition is quite high, evidencing that the relevant control parameter for drainage regimes includes both bubble size and interfacial contributions.

We studied the dynamics of two different types of domain shape relaxation in a stratifying foam film composed of an anionic polymer and cationic surfactant. Those films thin in stepwise fashion: circular domains of lower film thickness are formed, expand and coalesce until they cover the whole film surface. We found that the shape relaxation of coalescing domains is governed only by 2D dissipation, and the measurement of the time scales allows to determine the ratio between the driving force (line tension) and local film viscosity. Further, we analyzed the withdrawal of stripes and modeled it by a moving disc pulled by an external force. Here, 3D dissipation can not be neglected (Stokes paradox) and the equilibrium velocity depends logarithmically on the viscosity of the surrounding 3D air. The evaluation of both kinds of relaxation events yields the orders of magnitude of film viscosity and line tension. For the investigated system we found that the film viscosity is at least 30 times larger than the bulk viscosity, which can be explained by the local molecular ordering and strong interactions with film surfaces.

We report surface rheological measurements on Langmuir films of submicron-sized polymer coils (pancakes). The dynamics of the sol phase is found to be governed by free volume as in the simplest percolation problem. The observed rheology of the percolated phase (gel-like) is compatible with predictions for compressed arrangements of highly deformed soft particles interacting through their contact interfaces.

We have studied free horizontal liquid films made with semidilute polyelectrolyte solutions. A stratification phenomenon is observed during film thinning, with a step size close to the mesh size of the polymer network: dark domains nucleate and expand, the outer polymer layer dewetting a thinner film. The kinetics of dark spot expansion is not simply related to bulk viscosity and becomes faster when the film thickness decreases, suggesting an increase of the chain mobility of the confined polymer chains. These findings are similar to recent ones for other confined liquids and are the first reported so far for freely standing films.

DNA interacts with insoluble monolayers made of cationic amphiphiles as well as with monolayers of zwitterionic lipids in the presence of divalent ions. Binding to dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) or distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC) monolayers in the presence of calcium is accompanied by monolayer expansion. For the positively charged DODAB monolayer, this causes a decrease of surface potential, while an increase is observed for the DSPC monolayers. Binding to dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine preserves most of the liquid expanded-liquid condensed coexistence region. The liquid condensed domains adopt an elongated morphology in the presence of DNA, especially in the presence of calcium. The interaction of DNA with phospholipid monolayers is ion specific: the presence of calcium leads to a stronger interaction than magnesium and barium. These results were confirmed by bulk complexation studies.

We have examined the polymer/surfactant interaction in mixed aqueous solutions of cationic surfactants and anionic polyelectrolytes combining various techniques: tensiometry, potentiometry with surfactant-selective electrodes, and viscosimetry. We have investigated the role of varying polymer charge density, polymer concentration, surfactant chain length, polymer backbone rigidity, and molecular weight on the critical aggregation concentration (Cac) of mixed polymer/surfactant systems. The Cac of these systems, estimated from tensiometry and potentiometry, is found to be in close agreement. Different Cac variations with polymer charge density and surfactant chain length were observed with polymers having persistence lengths either smaller or larger than surfactant micelle size, which might reflect a different type of molecular organization in the polymer/surfactant complexes. The surfactant concentration at which the viscosity starts to decrease sharply is different from the Cac and probably reflects the polymer chain shrinkage due to surfactant binding.

We have performed forced drainage experiments on aqueous foams of bubble diameters D varying from 0.18 to 8 mm, and made with different surfactant and protein solutions (providing different surface viscoelastic properties). Changing bubble size or surface properties allows to evolve between two drainage regimes, the respective dimensionless permeabilities also varying with these parameters. We show that the bubble size and surface properties can be incorporated into a single surface mobility parameter that controls the transition between the two drainage regimes. The permeability measurements indicate how do the hydrodynamic resistances of the foam channels and nodes depend on surface mobility. Taking advantage of the large range of experimental conditions, leading to a variation of the mobility parameter over more than 3 decades, a simple and consistent description of both the drainage regimes and the transition in between them is obtained. For the smallest bubbles (D < 0.5 mm) anomalous behaviors are observed and discussed.

We report on the reduction of aqueous chloroaurate ions by glucose to form gold nanoparticles of uniform size. We further demonstrate the complexation of these particles with octadecylamine (ODA) monolayers at the air-water interface. Pressure-area (pi-A) isotherms as a function of time of complexation revealed a significant expansion of the monolayer. Surface pressure variation with time for constant areas after spreading of the monolayer was carried out to observe the kinetics of complexation of the colloidal particles at the interface. The kinetics of complexation of the particles at the interface was also monitored by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) measurements. Langmuir-Blodgett films of the particles complexed with ODA were formed at a subphase pH of 9 onto different substrates. Quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM) was used to quantify the amount of particles deposited per immersion cycle of the quartz crystal. The LB films were further characterized by UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. TEM measurements indicate a close packed and equidistant arrangement of colloidal particles in the LB film, probably due to hydrogen-bonding interactions.

We report investigations of hair surface potential under wetting at the nanometric scale by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface potential imaging was used to characterize the electrostatic properties of the hair samples. We found that the surface potential noticeably increases along the edges of the cuticles. These results are correlated with wetting behavior of different liquids performed using AFM in noncontact mode.

Because of the existence of large reserves, the production of heavy oils is presently the object of much interest. Some heavy oil reservoirs show anomalous behavior in primary production, with rates of production better than predicted. In Canada and Venezuela some heavy oils are produced in the form of "bubbly" oil, which is stable for several hours in open vessels. These crude oils are therefore commonly called "foamy oils". Since the presence of bubbles could be responsible for an enhanced rate of production, a better knowledge of the properties of the gas-oil interface is desirable. We have experimentally studied the effect of concentration of asphaltenes and resins on static and dynamic properties of oil-air interfaces and also on bulk viscosity. The experiments include surface tension measurements using the pendant-drop method, surface viscosity by the oscillating-drop method, foamability by continuous gas injection, and film lifetime. All the experiments were performed using resins and asphaltenes in toluene solutions at 20 degrees C. At first asphaltenes enhance foamability and film lifetime. All the experiments performed showed a change in regime for asphaltene concentrations around 10% by weight, possibly due to clustering. At the studied concentrations, the adsorption process at the air-oil interface is not diffusion controlled but rather involves a reorganization of asphaltene molecules in a network structure. The formation of a solid skin is well identified by the increase of the elastic modulus. This elastic modulus is also an important property for foam stability, since a rigid interface limits bubble rupture. The interface rigidity at long times decreases with increases in resin fraction, which could decrease foam stability as well as emulsion stability. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.

The serotonin transporter (SERT) is the target of several important antidepressant and psychostimulant drugs. It has been shown that under defined conditions, the transporter spread at the air/water interface was able to bind its specific ligands. In this paper, the interfacial organization of the protein has been assessed from dynamic surface pressure and ellipsometric measurements. For areas comprising between 10,400 and 7,100 A(2)/molecule, ellipsometric measurements reveal an important change in the thickness of the SERT film. This change was attributed to the reorientation of the transporter molecules from a horizontal to their natural predictive transmembrane orientation. The thickness of the SERT film at 7,100 A(2)/molecule was found to be approximately equal to 84 A and coincided well with the theoretical value estimated from the calculations based on the dimensions of alpha-helices containing membrane proteins. These data suggest that the three-dimensional arrangement of the SERT may be represented as a box with lengths d(z)=83--85 A and d(y) or d(x)=41--47 A.

Dilute mixed solutions of non-surface active anionic polymers (polyacrylamide and polystyrene sulfonate, xanthan) and various surfactants have been studied with several methods: surface tension, ellipsometry, X-ray and neutron reflectivity, thin film balance, surface and bulk rheology. A strong synergistic lowering of the surface tension is found with cationic surfactants in the concentration range where no appreciable complexation of surfactant and polymer occurs in the bulk solution (as seen from viscosity measurements). Despite appreciable differences between surface tension behaviour, the adsorbed layer is very similar for all the polymers: their thickness is small and the polymer chains are stretched along the surface. The surface tension behaviour of these polymers with non-ionic surfactants is also different. When the polymers are confined in thin films, the forces between surfaces are similar, and independent of surfactant nature: oscillatory forces are measured, which reflect the existence of a polymer network with a well defined mesh size. The connection of foam stability with surface and bulk complexation is far from clear.

Foams and emulsions are stabilized by surfactant monolayers that adsorb at the air-water and oil-water interfaces, respectively. As a result of monolayer adsorption, the interfaces become viscoelastic. We will describe experiments showing that foaming, emulsification, foam and emulsion stability, are strongly dependent upon the value of compression elasticity and viscosity. This will include excited surface wave devices for the measurement of surface viscoelasticity and thin film videointerferometry for the study of model films between air bubbles and emulsion drops.

A supported liquid membrane (SLM) containing a resorcinarene carrier has been used for the selective transport of erythritol, threitol, ribitol and xylitol from concentrated (1.0-0.01 M) aqueous solutions. The membrane is made of a microporous polytetrafluoroethylene film impregnated with a 0.01 M solution of the carrier in CCl4. The permeabilities of the SLM for all alditols were calculated. On the basis of the flux dependence on the initial concentrations of carrier and alditol, the rate-determining step in the transport mechanism is shown to be the migration of the 1:1 carrier-carbohydrate complex in the immobilized organic phase. The flux of sugar is related to the initial concentration of alditol in the feed phase by a saturation law, which allowed the determination of the apparent diffusion coefficients and the stability constants of the resorcinarene complexes of alditols formed in the liquid membrane.

The viscoelastic properties of insoluble monolayers have been investigated by the excited electrocapillary waves method. Effective negative values of dilational viscosities have been obtained in the liquid expanded and liquid condensed phases of insoluble monolayers of myristic, pentadecanoic, and stearic acids. However, the surface viscosity remains positive for the more expanded monolayers of ethyl palmitate ester. Possible origins of such a behavior are discussed in terms of transitional effects between the two-dimensional coexisting phases.

The velocity of gravity-driven flow through aqueous foams (forced drainage) has been determined by using electrical conductivity measurements in foams made with solutions of different surfactants. There is always a scaling behavior (power law) between the drainage velocity V and the imposed flow rate Q: V approximately Q(alpha), but the alpha coefficient varies between the different surfactant solutions and increases with surface viscosity. An explanation of this behavior will be given in terms of a transition between a node-dominated and a Plateau border-dominated viscous dissipation, for which theory predicts respectively alpha=1/3 and alpha=1/2.

The behavior of solubilized alkanes at the surface of DoTAB solutions for various surfactant bulk concentrations below and above the cmc is described. Several techniques such as tensiometry, ellipsometry, and Brewster angle microscopy, as well as an excited capillary wave device are used for the study. Alkanes do not wet the surface completely and form a mixed monolayer with the surfactant. Rather unusual viscoelastic behavior is observed for the mixed monolayers. This suggests a new type of relaxation phenomenon, but its origin remains to be elucidated. Copyright 1997 Academic Press. Copyright 1997Academic Press

The active transport of ammonia gas was obtained with an asymmetric composite membrane-model using H+ as carrier and the formation of water as chemical energy source. The experimental molecular pump externally limited by two silicone films permeable to gasses but not to liquids or ions is separated into two liquid layers by a central cation-exchange membrane. The first acid layer produces the aspiration of NH3, due to NH4+ formation, through the inlet silicone film; NH4+ is transferred to the second alkaline layer through the ion exchange membrane, by interdiffusion with K+; there NH4+ reacts with OH-, water is formed and NH3 is expelled throught the oulet silicone film. This new pump enlarges the applicability of in vitro active transport to non-enzymatic systems and energy sources different from ATP.
