Abstract: The substitution of Zn on the Cu-site and Si on the Ge-site of CuGeO3 quenches the spin-Peierls state. All substitutions lead to a suppression of the spin-Peierls gap seen below T SP =14K at 30 cm−1 and to a change of the temperature dependence of the spinon continuum at 200–350 cm−1 attributed to a frustration induced Heisenberg exchange scattering. A substitution of Zn on the Cu-site has the strongest effect. The change of the continuum results from a local depression of the spin-Peierls gap near the impurity.

Abstract: We have investigated the effect of pressure and magnetic field on the specific heat of CeCu2Si2 and CeNi2Ge2, two undoped compounds close to an antiferromagetic (afm) quantum critical point. In a CeCu2Si2 sample showing an afm phase at p=0, application of a pressure of p=0.7 GPa results in a replacement of this phase by superconductivity and to non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behaviour in C/T. In CeNi2Ge2 the NFL behaviour present at p=0 is suppressed by either a magnetic field B=8 T or a pressure p=1.3 GPa. For both compounds, the NFL effects are consistent (as T→0) with C/T=γ0-αT1/2 as expected when TN→0.

The normal-state ρaband ρcare measured in Bi2Sr1.95La0.05CuOy(Tc∼13 K) by suppressing superconductivity with 61-T pulsed magnetic fields. In the sample with smallest ρab(74μΩcm at 0.66 K), metallic ρabis found to coexist with “semiconducting” ρcdown to our lowest temperature. In samples with larger residual ρab, the in-plane conduction becomes insulating at low temperatures even when ρab(T) showns linear-Tbehavior aboveTc.

Positive-muon spin rotation (µ+ SR) measurements have been carried out in the new heavy-fermion superconductors UM2Al3, M=Ni and Pd. In UNi2Al3 the observedµ+ frequencies in zero applied field indicate commensurate antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of U moments ~0.1µB/U atom. These moments coexist with superconductivity and have the highest values observed in an AF heavy-fermion superconductor. The absence of well-defined frequencies in zero-fieldµ+ SR in the AF state of UPd2Al3 suggests symmetricµ+ stopping sites. In this systemµ+ SR linewidths belowTc yield a preliminary value of ~8000 Å for the London penetration depth.

An elastic neutron scattering study was performed on the new superconducting heavy fermion systems UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3. The neutron diffraction patterns reveal unambiguously long range antiferromagnetic order in UPd2Al3 with an ordered magnetic momentµU = (0.85±0.03)µB, which coexists with the superconducting state. This is by far the largestµU value observed for any heavy fermion superconductor. For UNi2Al3, no long-range magnetic order could be observed for temperaturesT?1.5 K, yielding an upper limit of the ordered moment of 0.2µB.

UPd2Al3 is a new heavy-fermion superconductor with a recordTc of 2 K. In addition, it shows a transition to long-range antiferromagnetic order atTN=14 K. Its Sommerfeld coefficient is reduced from ?p=210mJ/K2 mole in the paramagnetic to ?0=150mJ/K2 mole in the antiferromagnetic phase.

We have investigated the compound YbNiAl, which crystallizes in the same structure as the well-known mixed-valent system YbCuAl, and have found that it is the first example of a clear cut Yb-based heavy-fermion antiferromagnet. The resistivity increases logarithmically by 25% between 100 and 10 K, C/Textrapolates below 0.4 K to a γ value of 350 mJ/K2mol and the entropy at the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN= 3 K reaches only 0.45RIn 2. We compare the properties of this compound with those of YbPtAl, where Yb is trivalent.
