WOS: 000247835800028, Water distilled essential oil of aerial parts of Tanacetum cadineum (Boiss.) Heywood subsp. orientale Grierson (Asteraceae) was analyzed by GC and GC/MS methods. Ninety three compounds have been characterized representing 97.8% of the oil. 1,8-Cineole (1.8.9%), p-cymene (15.7%), terpinen-4-ol (14.8%), borneol (9.8%) and gamma-terpinene (3.5%) were found to be the major constituents of the oil. Antimicrobial activity of the oil was tested via micro-dilution broth method. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus epidemidis, Candida albicans were used as the test microorganisms.

The chemical composition of marjoram essential oil ( Origanum majorana L.) was determined by GC/FID and GC/MS. As major compounds of the oil terpinen-4-ol (21.3%), trans-sabinene hydrate (15.5%), γ-terpinene (14.0%), and α-terpinene (8.9%) were identified. The odour profile and evaluation of marjoram essential oil was established. Marjoram oil has antiradical activity with regard to DPPH, exceeding that of the phenolic component thymol. The oil exhibited scavenging effect on the hydroxyl radicals (OH•), as well, which substantially exceeded that towards the DPPH radical - the respective concentrations for 50% inhibition of the radicals (IC50) were 0.11μg/mL for OH• and 341.0μg/mL for DPPH. Marjoram essential oil was capable of antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid emulsion model system, where at concentration of 0.05% it inhibited conjugated dienes formation by 50.00% and the generation of linoleic acid secondary oxidized products by 79.85%.

The antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil (TTO), the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia are well documented. In order to optimize its therapeutic activity, TTO patches were designed. The aim of this work was the formulation of monolayer patches containing TTO. Moreover, the performance of oleic acid (OA) as a skin penetration enhancer in patches was evaluated. Terpinen-4-ol (T4OL), the main component of TTO, was the marker used to evaluate TTO skin permeability. The permeation study was performed through human epidermis by using Franz diffusion cells. Patches were prepared by using methacrylic copolymers, Eudragit E100 (EuE100) or Eudragit NE (EuNE), and a silicone resin, BioPSA7-4602 (Bio-PSA). TTO and OA contents were fixed at 10% w/w and 3% w/w, respectively. The patches were prepared by a casting method and characterised in terms of T4OL content and skin permeability. All the selected polymers were suitable as the main component of the patch matrix. Since the main critical issue in the use of TTO is related to its toxicity after absorption, the local administration of TTO can take advantage of the use of patches based on EuE100 because of the high retained amount and the low permeation of T4OL. In this matrix, OA slightly increased the T4OL retained amount, improving the efficacy and safety of TTO patches.
