After years of research, the West German firm of BBC-Heidelberg has produced a high-energy battery based on a sodium-sulphur (Na/S) cell. Volkswagen AG (VW) will test the battery's performance in an electric drive Jetta automobile. The Na/S cell can store four times the energy of its lead-acid counterpart. Reactive substances in the battery consist of a fluid and the electrolyte solid. As a positive electrode, the battery uses melted sulphur, the negative side is a Beta-aluminum oxide, a ceramic solid. Keeping the battery's operating temperature within a 300 to 350C range is imperative. The VW system accomplishes this using a special heating and cooling system. Insulation also helps to prevent heat loss.
