Tremendous advances in the study of magnetic light-matter interactions have recently been achieved using man-made nanostructures that exhibit and exploit an optical magnetic response. However, naturally occurring emitters can also exhibit magnetic resonances in the form of optical-frequency magnetic-dipole transitions. Here we quantify the magnetic nature of light emission using energy- and momentum-resolved spectroscopy, and leverage a pair of spectrally close electric- and magnetic-dipole transitions in trivalent europium to probe vacuum fluctuations in the electric and magnetic fields at the nanometre scale. These results reveal a new tool for nano-optics: an atomic-size quantum emitter that interacts with the magnetic component of light.

We demonstrate that magnetic dipole transitions provide an additional degree of freedom for engineering emission spectra. Without the need for a high-quality optical cavity, we show how a simple gold mirror can strongly tune the emission of trivalent europium. We exploit the differing field symmetries of electric and magnetic dipoles to selectively direct the majority of emission through each of three major transitions (centered at 590, 620, and 700 nm), and present a model that accurately predicts this tuning from the local electric and magnetic density of optical states.

Population dynamics in systems composed of cyclically competing species has been of increasing interest recently. Here we investigate a system with four or more species. Using mean field theory, we study in detail the trajectories in configuration space of the population fractions. We discover a variety of orbits, shaped like saddles, spirals, and straight lines. Many of their properties are found explicitly. Most remarkably, we identify a collective variable that evolves simply as an exponential: Q ∝ e(λt), where λ is a function of the reaction rates. It provides information on the state of the system for late times (as well as for t→-∞). We discuss implications of these results for the evolution of a finite, stochastic system. A generalization to an arbitrary number of cyclically competing species yields valuable insights into universal properties of such systems.

The Purcell effect is commonly used to increase light emission by enhancing the radiative decay of electric dipole transitions. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the opposite effect, namely, the inhibition of electric dipole transitions, can be used to strongly enhance light emission via magnetic dipole transitions. Specifically, by exploiting the differing symmetries of competitive electric and magnetic dipole transitions in trivalent europium, we demonstrate a fourfold enhancement of the far-field emission from the (5)D(0)→(7)F(1) magnetic dipole transition in trivalent europium. We show that this strong enhancement is well predicted by a three-level model that couples the individual Purcell enhancement factors of competitive transitions from the same excited state.

A patient with a 10-year history of Crohn's disease presented to our ophthalmology service with symptoms of acute anterior uveitis. Previous episodes had been treated successfully with topical steroids.However, on this occasion after treatment with topical steroids, the patient developed macular oedema with concurrent optic neuritis in the affected eye.Furthermore, optic neuritis persisted despite oral steroid treatment contrary to expectations based on current literature. After 6 months of treatment, optic disc oedema had markedly improved but was replaced by sectoral disc pallor.

We present a study of the first silicon microdisk resonators which are smaller than the free-space resonant wavelength in all spatial dimensions. Spectral details of whispering gallery modes with azimuthal mode number m = 4-7 are measured in microdisks with diameters between 1.35 and 1.89microm and are studied at wavelengths from 1.52 to 1.62microm. For the structures considered here, m = 5 is the highest azimuthal mode order in a subwavelength cavity and has measured Q = 1250. These results agree well with theoretical calculations using a finite difference frequency domain method and fit an exponential scaling law relating Q to disk radius via m.

Motivated by a series of experiments that revealed a temperature dependence of the dynamic scaling regime of growing surfaces, we investigate theoretically how a nonequilibrium growth process reacts to a sudden change of system parameters. We discuss quenches between correlated regimes through exact expressions derived from the stochastic Edwards-Wilkinson equation with a variable diffusion constant. Our study reveals that a sudden change of the diffusion constant leads to remarkable changes in the surface roughness. Different dynamic regimes, characterized by a power-law or by an exponential relaxation, are identified, and a dynamic phase diagram is constructed. We conclude that growth processes provide one of the rare instances where quenches between correlated regimes yield a power-law relaxation.

Using Monte Carlo simulations and a domain-wall theory, we discuss the effect of coupling several totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) to a finite reservoir of particles. This simple model mimics directed biological transport processes in the presence of finite resources such as protein synthesis limited by a finite pool of ribosomes. If all TASEPs have equal length, we find behavior which is analogous to a single TASEP coupled to a finite pool. For the more generic case of chains with different lengths, several unanticipated regimes emerge. A generalized domain-wall theory captures our findings in good agreement with simulation results.

We revisit the classical model for voter dynamics in a two-party system with two basic modifications. In contrast to the original voter model studied in regular lattices, we implement the opinion formation process in a random network of agents in which interactions are no longer restricted by geographical distance. In addition, we incorporate the rapidly changing nature of the interpersonal relations in the model. At each time step, agents can update their relationships. This update is determined by their own opinion, and by their preference to make connections with individuals sharing the same opinion, or rather with opponents. In this way, the network is built in an adaptive manner, in the sense that its structure is correlated and evolves with the dynamics of the agents. The simplicity of the model allows us to examine several issues analytically. We establish criteria to determine whether consensus or polarization will be the outcome of the dynamics and on what time scales these states will be reached. In finite systems consensus is typical, while in infinite systems a disordered metastable state can emerge and persist for infinitely long time before consensus is reached.

The implementation of modernizing medical careers (MMC) has resulted in some specialties being allocated very inexperienced trainees such as ophthalmology. We aim to describe the process of implementation of MMC and how it may affect the service provision in smaller specialities such as ophthalmology. A methodical approach in a district hospital setting was used to provide early core training to such trainees involving managerial support. The quality of service provided by newer trainees can be enhanced by providing early structured training during induction to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm and continued learning. This example can be used in other units and specialties.

Aim: Fluticasone propionate (FP) and mometasone furoate (MF) are inhaled corticosteroids that possess a high ratio of topical to systemic activity. The systemic bioavailability of MF has been claimed to be minimal (1%). FP has been shown to exhibit the same degree of systemic effects, but its systemic availability is between 13 and 17%. We hypothesize that FP and MF have comparable systemic availabilities that can explain their potential to cause systemic effects., Methods: Steady-state FP and MF trough plasma samples were determined from a clinical study by Fardon et al. in patients with persistent asthma (forced expiratory volume in 1 s = 91%). The percent plasma protein binding of FP and MF was measured using ultracentrifugation. Free FP plasma concentrations were normalized for their differences in receptor binding affinity compared with MF and linked to overnight urinary cortisol/creatinine with an inhibitory E(max)., Results: A plot of steady-state FP and MF total trough plasma concentrations vs. dose showed that both drugs exhibit dose linearity. MF has comparable bioavailability to FP based on the steady-state concentrations observed for the different doses. The free plasma concentration producing 50% of urinary cortisol suppression (IC(50)) for MF was not statistically different from the free, normalized IC(50) for FP., Conclusion: FP and MF have similar pulmonary deposition and the same potential to cause systemic side-effects due to their similar IC(50) values. The observed urinary cortisol suppression of FP and MF is in agreement with their systemic availability, their differences in plasma protein binding and receptor binding affinity.

We study the effects of local inhomogeneities, i.e., slow sites of hopping rate q<1, in a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process for particles of size l>or=1 (in units of the lattice spacing). We compare the simulation results of l=1 and l>1 and notice that the existence of local defects has qualitatively similar effects on the steady state. We focus on the stationary current as well as the density profiles. If there is only a single slow site in the system, we observe a significant dependence of the current on the location of the slow site for both l=1 and l>1 cases. When two slow sites are introduced, more intriguing phenomena emerge, e.g., dramatic decreases in the current when the two are close together. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior when q-->0. We also explore the associated density profiles and compare our findings to an earlier study using a simple mean-field theory. We then outline the biological significance of these effects.

Silicon carbide particles exhibit both electric and magnetic optical resonances, allowing unexplored dielectric metamaterial designs. Experimental extinction spectra and Mie theory calculations of single microscale rod-shaped particles reveal three observable midinfrared resonant modes. Two of the modes are degenerate, with a frequency that can be tuned according to a resonance condition derived within the Letter. The existence of both electric and magnetic resonances may enable a novel negative refractive index metamaterial design.

As a solvable and broadly applicable model system, the totally asymmetric exclusion process enjoys iconic status in the theory of nonequilibrium phase transitions. Here, we focus on the time dependence of the total number of particles on a 1-dimensional open lattice and its power spectrum. Using both Monte Carlo simulations and analytic methods, we explore its behavior in different characteristic regimes. In the maximal current phase and on the coexistence line (between high and low density phases), the power spectrum displays algebraic decay, with exponents -1.62 and -2.00, respectively. Deep within the high and low density phases, we find pronounced oscillations, which damp into power laws. This behavior can be understood in terms of driven biased diffusion with conserved noise in the bulk.

When a light wave strikes a metal film it can, under appropriate conditions, excite a surface plasmon polariton (SPP)--a surface electromagnetic wave that is coupled to the free electrons in the metal. Such SPPs are involved in a wide range of phenomena, including nanoscale optical waveguiding, perfect lensing, extraordinary optical transmission, subwavelength lithography and ultrahigh-sensitivity biosensing. However, before the full potential of technology based on SPPs (termed 'plasmonics') can be realized, many fundamental questions regarding the interaction between light and matter at the nanoscale need to be answered. For over 200 years, Young's double-slit experiment has been a valuable pedagogical tool for demonstrating the wave nature of light. Here, we perform a double-slit experiment with SPPs to reveal the strong analogy between SPP propagation along the surface of metallic structures and light propagation in conventional dielectric components (such as glass waveguides). This allows us to construct a general framework to describe the propagation, diffraction and interference of SPPs. It also suggests that there is an effective diffraction limit for the lateral confinement of SPPs on metal stripe waveguides, and justifies the use of well-developed concepts from conventional optics and photonics in the design of new plasmonic devices.

A two-dimensional lattice gas of two species, driven in opposite directions by an external force, undergoes a jamming transition if the filling fraction is sufficiently high. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the growth of these jams (''clouds''), as the system approaches a nonequilibrium steady state from a disordered initial state. We monitor the dynamic structure factor S(k{x},k{y};t) and find that the k{x}=0 component exhibits dynamic scaling, of the form S(0,k{y};t)=t;{beta}S[over](k{y}t;{alpha}) . Over a significant range of times, we observe excellent data collapse with alpha=12 and beta=1 . The effects of varying filling fraction and driving force are discussed.

A 68-year-old man, who underwent a left lower lobectomy for a typical carcinoid tumor 30 years previously, presented with a 2-year history of left-sided chest pain. A computed tomographic scan, an octreotide scan, and pleural biopsy all showed recurrence of carcinoid tumor in the pleura. He underwent left chest wall resection, and histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of typical carcinoid tumor. A review of the literature indicates that this is only the second reported case of pleural recurrence after previous complete resection of typical pulmonary carcinoid tumor. This case is even more unusual in that the recurrence presented so long after surgery.

The aim of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy is to achieve optimal drug targeting by producing pulmonary effects with a minimum of systemic side effects. To achieve a favorable safety and efficacy profile, an ICS should possess the necessary pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics. Ideally, an ICS would have high pulmonary deposition efficiency, high systemic clearance, negligible oral bioavailability, sustained pulmonary residence time, selective binding to the corticosteroid receptor, and high plasma protein binding. Recent developments in ICS therapy have used these concepts in producing more effective compounds resulting in drugs with a very high therapeutic index. Additional developments may consider exploring improvements in delivery devices and drug formulations to improve pulmonary residence time.

Intravenous administration of pooled, polyvalent human immunoglobulin (IVIG) has been used for over 20 years as a therapy for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). IVIG is available in limited quantities, and clinical preparations have been associated with the transfer of human pathogens. We have proposed that high-dose monoclonal antibody may be used in lieu of IVIG to achieve beneficial effects in the treatment of ITP. The current study investigates the effects of high-dose monoclonal antibody therapy in a rat model of ITP. Hybridoma cells secreting a murine monoclonal antiplatelet antibody (7E3) and murine monoclonal anti-methotrexate IgG (AMI) were grown in serum-free media. Next, 7E3, 8 mg kg(-1), was administered intravenously to rats following pretreatment with saline or AMI (1 g kg(-1) IV). AMI and 7E3 plasma concentrations were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and platelet count was determined with a Cell-Dyne hematology analyzer. Severe, transient thrombocytopenia was induced by 7E3. Platelet counts dropped to approximately 8% of initial values within 1 hour after 7E3 administration. AMI pretreatment dramatically affected 7E3-induced thrombocytopenia, significantly altering the time course of thrombocytopenia (P < .05) and significantly decreasing the severity of 7E3-induced thrombocytopenia (ie, following AMI pretreatment, nadir platelet count was greater than 8-fold that of the control group, P < .05). In addition, AMI pretreatment induced a 57% increase in 7E3 clearance (1.13 +/- 0.13 mL h(-1) kg(-1) vs 0.72 +/- 0.08 mL h(-1) kg(-1), P < .05). Consequently, high-dose monoclonal antibody therapy attenuated thrombocytopenia and produced a moderate increase in the clearance of antiplatelet antibodies in a rat model of ITP.

Aim: To assess the factors determining patient choice of GH device, and whether offering free patient choice improves compliance with GH therapy., Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study performed on patients offered free choice of GH device in a regional growth clinic. In a subgroup having home delivery, GH compliance was assessed using ampoule counts., Results: 125 patients (74 (59%) male), median (range) 9.30 (1.0-18.3) years were commenced on GH from January 2001 to March 2004, and offered free choice of device. 68 (54%) chose a needled device, and 57 (46%) needle-free. There was no statistical difference in age, sex or diagnostic category between the two groups. Light blue devices were more likely to be chosen by males (p=0.056). Questionnaires giving reasons for choosing a device were available in 40, and a further 50 gave reasons for both choosing a specific device and not choosing others. Other than choice of needled/needle-free device, the factor most likely to determine choice was 'ease of use'. Only 6 (4.8%) subsequently changed device, and compliance remained high but unchanged at approximately 90%., Conclusions: There are no specific features which determine what GH device a patient will choose. For those units offering free patient choice, a wide range of different devices should be made available., (Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel.)

Although surface polariton modes supported by finite-width interfaces can guide electromagnetic energy in three dimensions, we demonstrate for the first time to our knowledge that such modes can be modeled by the solutions of two-dimensional dielectric slab waveguides. An approximate model is derived by a ray-optics interpretation that is consistent with previous investigations of the Fresnel relations for surface polariton reflection. This model is compared with modal solutions for metal stripe waveguides obtained by full vectorial magnetic-field finite-difference methods. The field-symmetric modes of such waveguides are shown to be in agreement with the normalized dispersion relationship for analogous TE modes of dielectric slab waveguides. Lateral confinement is investigated by comparison of power-density profiles, and implications for the diffraction limit of guided polariton modes are discussed.

We study the phenomenon of real space condensation in the steady state of a class of one-dimensional mass transport models. We derive the criterion for the occurrence of a condensation transition and analyze the precise nature of the shape and the size of the condensate in the condensed phase. We find two distinct condensate regimes: one where the condensate is Gaussian distributed and the particle number fluctuations scale normally as L(1/2) where L is the system size, and the second regime where the particle number fluctuations become anomalously large and the condensate peak is non-Gaussian. We interpret these results within the framework of sums of random variables.

Inhaled therapy with either glucocorticoids and/or beta(2)-adrenergic drugs remains the mainstay of asthma treatment. In the last few years, a number of new products have been introduced into the market with the goal of improving efficacy and safety. This review article summarises the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of inhaled drugs for topical delivery necessary to achieve this goal. Pharmacokinetic properties include a high pulmonary deposition, low oral bioavailability, optimised pulmonary residence time and a very high systemic clearance. Optimisation of pharmacodynamic properties, such as receptor selectivity, may also yield drugs with improved pulmonary selectivity. As existing drugs also provide high efficacy and safety profiles, future developments will represent only slight improvements and quantum leap improvements are unlikely to occur.

We present the exact solution for the full dynamics of a nonequilibrium spin chain and its dual reaction-diffusion model, for arbitrary initial conditions. The spin chain is driven out of equilibrium by coupling alternating spins to two thermal baths at different temperatures. In the reaction-diffusion model, this translates into spatially alternating rates for particle creation and annihilation, and even negative "temperatures" have a perfectly natural interpretation. Observables of interest include the magnetization, the particle density, and all correlation functions for both models. Two generic types of time dependence are found: if both temperatures are positive, the magnetization, density, and correlation functions decay exponentially to their steady-state values. In contrast, if one of the temperatures is negative, damped oscillations are observed in all quantities. They can be traced to a subtle competition of pair creation and annihilation on the two sublattices. We comment on the limitations of mean-field theory and propose an experimental realization of our model in certain conjugated polymers and linear chain compounds.

We present precision Monte Carlo data and analytic arguments for an asymmetric exclusion process, involving two species of particles driven in opposite directions on a 2xL lattice. To resolve a stark discrepancy between earlier simulation data and an analytic conjecture, we argue that the presence of a single macroscopic cluster is an intermediate stage of a complex nucleation process: in smaller systems, this cluster is destabilized while larger systems form multiple clusters. Both limits lead to exponential cluster size distributions, controlled by very different length scales.

Plasmonic waveguides can guide light along metal-dielectric interfaces with propagating wave vectors of greater magnitude than are available in free space and hence with propagating wavelengths shorter than those in vacuum. This is a necessary, rather than sufficient, condition for subwavelength confinement of the optical mode. By use of the reflection pole method, the two-dimensional modal solutions for single planar waveguides as well as adjacent waveguide systems are solved. We demonstrate that, to achieve subwavelength pitches, a metal-insulator-metal geometry is required with higher confinement factors and smaller spatial extent than conventional insulator-metal-insulator structures. The resulting trade-off between propagation and confinement for surface plasmons is discussed, and optimization by materials selection is described.

This laboratory is investigating the use of anti-methotrexate IgG (AMI) and anti-methotrexate Fab fragments (AMF) within an inverse targeting strategy that is designed to enhance the pharmacokinetic selectivity of intraperitoneal (i.p.) chemotherapy. The goal of this study was to develop enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to determine concentrations of AMI and AMF in mouse and rat plasma. An antigen-specific ELISA was developed for AMI and AMF in mouse and rat plasma. The assay was validated with respect to precision and accuracy by evaluating the recovery of AMI and AMF from mouse and rat plasma samples. Preliminary pharmacokinetic studies of AMI and AMF were performed in Sprague-Dawley rats and Swiss Webster mice. The animals were instrumented with a jugular vein cannula and administered AMI or AMF, 15 mg kg(-1) via the cannula. Plasma samples were taken at various time points and analyzed using the ELISA, and the observed concentration vs. time profiles were subjected to non-compartmental pharmacokinetic analyses. Standard curves for the ELISAs were found to be linear over concentration ranges of 0-250 and 0-350 ng mL(-1) for AMI and AMF, respectively. Intra-assay and inter-assay recovery of AMI and AMF from plasma samples were found to be within 15% of theoretical values. Preliminary pharmacokinetic investigations of AMI allowed estimation of AMI clearance to be 0.017 mL kg(-1) min(-1) in the rat and 0.043 mL kg(-1) min(-1) in the mouse. AMF clearance was estimated to be 0.038 and 1.93 mL kg(-1) min(-1) in the mouse and rat, respectively. In conclusion, ELISAs have been developed and validated for quantitation of AMI and AMF in rat and mouse plasma. The assays will allow further investigations of AMI and AMF pharmacokinetics.

We present a study by linear stability analysis and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a simple model of biological coevolution. Selection is provided through a reproduction probability that contains quenched, random interspecies interactions, while genetic variation is provided through a low mutation rate. Both selection and mutation act on individual organisms. Consistent with some current theories of macroevolutionary dynamics, the model displays intermittent, statistically self-similar behavior with punctuated equilibria. The probability density for the lifetimes of ecological communities is well approximated by a power law with exponent near -2, and the corresponding power spectral densities show 1/f noise (flicker noise) over several decades. The long-lived communities (quasisteady states) consist of a relatively small number of mutualistically interacting species, and they are surrounded by a "protection zone" of closely related genotypes that have a very low probability of invading the resident community. The extent of the protection zone affects the stability of the community in a way analogous to the height of the free-energy barrier surrounding a metastable state in a physical system. Measures of biological diversity are on average stationary with no discernible trends, even over our very long simulation runs of approximately 3.4 x 10(7) generations.

The process of protein synthesis in biological systems resembles a one dimensional driven lattice gas in which the particles have spatial extent, covering more than one lattice site. We expand the well studied totally asymmetric exclusion process, in which particles typically cover a single lattice site, to include cases with extended objects. Exact solutions can be determined for a uniform closed system. We analyze the uniform open system through two approaches. First, a continuum limit produces a modified diffusion equation for particle density profiles. Second, an extremal principle based on domain wall theory accurately predicts the phase diagram and currents in each phase. Finally, we briefly consider approximate approaches to a nonuniform open system with quenched disorder in the particle hopping rates and compare these approaches with Monte Carlo simulations.

The time evolution of structure factors (SF) in the disordering process of an initially phase-separated lattice depends crucially on the microscopic disordering mechanism, such as Kawasaki dynamics (KD) or vacancy-mediated disordering (VMD). Monte Carlo simulations show unexpected "dips" in the SFs. A phenomenological model is introduced to explain the dips in the odd SFs, and an analytical solution of KD is derived, in excellent agreement with simulations. The presence (absence) of dips in the even SFs for VMD (KD) marks a significant but not yet understood difference of the two dynamics.
