Research on nanoparticles (NPs) is gaining great attention in modulating abiotic stress tolerance and improving crop productivity. Therefore, this investigation was carried out to evaluate the effects of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) on growth and biochemical characteristics in two maize hybrids (YH-5427 and FH-1046) grown under normal conditions or subjected to saline stress. A pot-culture experiment was carried out in the Botanical Research Area of "the University of Lahore", Lahore, Pakistan, in a completely randomized design. At two phenological stages, both maize hybrids were irrigated with the same amount of distilled water or NaCl solution (EC = 5 dS m -1 ) and subjected or not to foliar treatment with a suspension of CuO-NPs. The salt stress significantly reduced the photosynthetic parameters (photosynthetic rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance), while the sodium content in the shoot and root increased. The foliar spray with CuO-NPs improved the growth and photosynthetic attributes, along with the N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content in the roots and shoots. However, the maize hybrid YH-5427 responded better than the other hybrid to the saline stress when sprayed with CuO-NPs. Overall, the findings of the current investigation demonstrated that CuO-NPs can help to reduce the adverse effects of salinity stress on maize plants by improving growth and physio-biochemical attributes.

This research article demonstrates the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical evaluation of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) on the surface of silanized graphene oxide (silanized GO), which is nanostructured and used to quantify 17-estradiol (E2) in wastewater. As characterization methods, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, dynamic scattering light (DSL), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were utilized to examine the synthesized GO, silanized GO, MIP-GO composite, and non-imprinted polymer (NIP)-GO (NIP-GO) composite. FTIR results confirmed the successful synthesis of GO composites. Raman study confirmed the synthesis of monolayer silanized GO, MIP-GO composite, and NIP-GO composite. Surface morphology revealed that after polymerization, the surface of silanized GO sheet-like morphology is covered with nanoparticles. Adsorption kinetics studies revealed that adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Further, we studied the performance of a MIP-GO-based sensor by optimizing the effects of pH, scan rate, and incubation period. The linear calibration was achieved between the oxidation peak current and E2 concentration from 0.1 to 0.81 ppm, with a detection limit of 0.037 ppm. The selectivity of the MIP-GO composite was also checked by using other estrogens, and it was found that E2 is 3.3, 0.5, and 1.4 times more selective than equilin, estriol, and estrone, respectively. The composite was successfully applied to the wastewater samples for the detection of E2, and a good percentage of recoveries were achieved. It suggests that the reported composite can be applied to real samples. PRACTITIONER POINTS: An innovative electrochemical sensor was developed for selective detection of 17-estradiol through molecularly imprinted polymer fabricated on the surface of silanized GO (MIP-GO composite). The developed method was comprehensively validated and found to be linear in the range of 0.1 to 0.8 ppm of 17-estradiol, with 0.037 ppm of limit of detection and 0.1 ppm of limit of quantification, respectively. The developed MIP-GO-composite-based electrochemical sensor was found 3.3, 0.5, and 1.4 times more selective for 17-estradiol than equiline, estriol, and estrone, respectively. The applicability of a developed sensor was also checked on wastewater samples, and a good percent recovery was obtained., (© 2024 The Authors. The utilization of nanobiochar in agricultural practices has garnered substantial interest owing to its promising potential. Its nano-size particles possess an enhanced ability to infiltrate plant cells, potentially instigating biochemical and physiological responses that augment stress tolerance. In our study, we aimed to assess the impact and extent of exogenously applied nanobiochar on the growth dynamics and antioxidative responses in Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) plants subjected to salt stress (50 mM NaCl) and drought stress (maintained at 60% field capacity) compared with respective controls (0 mM NaCl and 100% field capacity). Following a 15-day exposure to stress conditions, nanobiochar solution (at concentrations of 0, 1, 3, and 5% w/v) was sprayed on spinach plants at weekly intervals (at 14, 21, and 28 days after sowing). The foliar application of nanobiochar markedly improved biomass, net assimilation rate, leaf area, and various other growth parameters under drought and salinity stress conditions. Notably, the application of 3% nanobiochar caused the most significant enhancement in growth traits, photosynthetic pigments, and nutrient content, indicating its efficiency in directly supplying nutrients to the foliage. Furthermore, under drought stress conditions, the application of 3% nanobiochar elicited a notable 62% increase in catalase activity, a two-fold rise in peroxidase activity, and a 128% increase in superoxide dismutase activity compared to the control (without nanobiochar). Additionally, nanobiochar application enhanced membrane stability, evidenced by reduced lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage. The foliar application of 3% nanobiochar was found as a promising strategy to significantly enhance spinach growth parameters, nutrient assimilation, and antioxidative defense mechanisms, particularly under conditions of drought and salinity stress., (© 2024. Objectives: To estimate the frequency of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 among pregnant women, the impact in terms of obstetrical and clinical outcomes and vertical transmission to the neonates., Methods: The prospective, case-control study was conducted at Zainab Panjwani Memorial Hospital, Karachi, from March to December 2021, and comprised pregnant women regardless of gestational age who exhibited symptoms or had a suspicion of exposure to any confirmed coronavirus disease-2019 individual. They were screened for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection using polymerase chain reaction or serology. Those who tested negative were designated as control group A, while who had a positive serology result along with a negative polymerase chain reaction were taken as recovered case group B1, and those who tested positive for polymerase chain reaction were called the positive case group B2. Groups B1 and B2 were followed up till delivery. The clinical presentation of coronavirus disease-2019 infection in pregnancy and its obstetrical and neonatal outcomes was assessed. Products of conception were tested for the detection of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 genome. The viral genome from group B2 cases was sequenced to confirm vertical transmission. Data was analysed using GraphPad Prism V8., Results: Of the 139 pregnant women, 74(53.2%) were in group A with mean age 25.87±6.90 years, 49(35.3%) were in group B1 with mean age 25.53±7.02 years, and 16(11.5%) were in group B2 with mean age 27.12±5.03 years. The gestational age at which termination of pregnancy occurred was 38.3±1.26 weeks in group B1 and 38.3±1.85 weeks for group B2. There were 96 neonates across the 3 groups. Of the 11(11.45%) neonates in group B2, 1(9.09%) had postnatal transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 and this mother-neonate case was taken as the Indexed case. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 genome isolated from the neonate showed similar mutations as the viral strain infecting the mother., Conclusion: The risk of vertical transmission was found to be low. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 genome was the same for both the mother and the neonate.

Introduction: Anemia is a significant public health concern, primarily affecting young children, pregnant and postpartum women, and menstruating adolescent girls and women. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anemia and associated factors in women of reproductive age visiting a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan., Objective: The primary objective was to determine the prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age, while the secondary objective was to investigate potential causes of anemia within this demographic group., Design: A prospective cross-sectional approach was employed, adhering to Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. A questionnaire-based method was used to assess anemia, and data were collected from women aged 14 to 40 years., Method: The study was conducted at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center from January to May 2023. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (Institutional Review Board reference number JSMU/IRB/2023/699). A sample of 397 women was included, and various demographic and lifestyle factors were assessed., Results: In this study of 397 participants, 71.5% were found to have anemia, primarily microcytic anemia (48.2%). Anemia prevalence was highest among the 14-18 years age group (80.7%) and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds (73.6%). Factors such as frequent tea consumption, irregular mealtimes, and pica consumption were associated with higher anemia rates. Pregnant women and those with more children were at a heightened risk of anemia., Conclusion: The study reveals a notable prevalence of anemia among women of reproductive age with a surprising emphasis on younger individuals and lower socioeconomic groups. Dietary habits, lifestyle choices, and pregnancy status play significant roles in anemia development. Targeted interventions are essential, particularly for younger women, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and pregnant individuals, to combat anemia effectively in this region.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid, blood, and blood breakdown products between the brain's arachnoid and dura mater coverings. While steroids have been explored as a potential treatment option, their efficacy and safety remain uncertain. This meta-analysis and systematic review aimed to assess the impact of steroids on CSDH management, including mortality, recurrence, complications, and functional outcomes., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive literature search in major electronic databases up to June 2023, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews and Interventions. Inclusion criteria encompassed adult patients with CSDH, the use of steroids as monotherapy or adjuvant therapy, and clearly defined outcomes. Randomized controlled trials and cohort studies meeting these criteria were included in the study., Results: The initial search yielded 4315 articles, with 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Our findings indicate a non-significant trend toward reduced mortality with steroids in combination with standard care (Odds ratios [OR] = 0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.20-2.18). However, substantial heterogeneity was observed (I 2 = 70%). Sensitivity analysis, excluding influential studies, suggested a potential increased mortality risk associated with steroids (OR = 1.47, 95% CI 0.87-2.48). Steroids showed a possible benefit in reducing the recurrence of CSDH (OR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.20-1.67), but with significant heterogeneity (I 2 = 89%). No clear advantage of steroids was observed in terms of functional outcomes at three months (modified Rankin scale scores). Furthermore, steroids were associated with a significantly higher incidence of adverse effects and complications (OR = 2.17, 95% CI 1.48-3.17)., Conclusion: Steroids may have a potential role in reducing CSDH recurrence but do not appear to confer significant advantages in terms of mortality or functional outcomes. However, their use is associated with a higher risk of adverse effects and complications. In this study we report an environmentally friendly, facile and straightforward sonochemical synthetic strategy for a Co 3 O 4 /GO nanocomposite using N , N '-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediaminocobalt(ii) as a precursor and graphene oxide sheets as an immobilization support for Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The synthesis was facilitated by physical and chemical effects of cavitation bubbles. The synthesized nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized for its composition and morphology using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible, Raman and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), etc. The results show Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles of 10 nm (SD 3 nm) were prepared on well exfoliated sheets of GO. The applicability of the synthesized Co 3 O 4 /GO nanocomposite was optimized as a nanofiller for mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprised of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) and polyvinyl chloride. The affinity of the prepared MMMs was evaluated for the separation of O 2 /N 2 gases by varying the concentration of nanofiller, i.e. 0.03%, 0.04%, 0.05% and 0.075% (w/v). The results display high separation performance for O 2 /N 2 gases with excellent permeance (N 2 167 GPU and O 2 432 GPU at 1 bar) and O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 2.58, when the MMMs were loaded with 0.05% (w/v) of Co 3 O 4 /GO nanocomposite., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests that could influence the work reported in this paper., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between demographic variables, Postpartum Depression (PPD) and Satisfaction With Life (SWL) in postpartum women of Faisalabad district. This is the first time that a study on postpartum women has been conducted in Faisalabad. In this cross-sectional study sample of 120 postpartum women (age range 20-40) has been collected from Saint Raphael Hospital Faisalabad by using convenience sample technique. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and Satisfaction with life Scale were used to measure PPD and SWL among postpartum women. A demographic form used to obtain demographic characteristics of the sample. Results show significant negative relationship between PPD and SWL among postpartum women of Faisalabad at r=0.659 and 0.868, respectively. Results also show significant positive relationship of age and language with postpartum depression at r=0.236 and 0.316, respectively, and significant negative relationship of economic status, residence, hospital, and checkup pattern with postpartum depression with r= -0.365, -0.284, -0.192, & -0.206. Moreover, there is a non-significant relationship between SWL and any demographic variable. Results indicated that PPD and SWL are inversely linked in postpartum women at Faisalabad. And demographic variables are also linked with postpartum depression. We have investigated the protective potential of methanol extract of Iphiona aucheri (IAM) on the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress associated genes and inflammatory genes on carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) induced hepatic toxicity in rats. Hepatic damage markers: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin were elevated while the content of antioxidants: catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were decreased significantly ( p < 0.05) in CCl 4 treated rats as compared to the control group. The CCl 4 intoxication induced a higher expression of glucose-regulated protein 78 kDa (GRP78), X-box-binding protein 1 total (XBP1t), spliced X-box-binding protein 1 (XBP1s), unspliced X-box-binding protein 1 (XBP1u), C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and genes involved in inflammation and fibrosis: tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), mothers against DPP homolog 3 (SMAD3), alpha skeletal muscle actin (αSMA) and collagen type I alpha 1 chain (COL1A1). The intoxicated rats showed a low expression of the glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2) like-2 (Nrf2). The administration of IAM to intoxicated rats restored the expression of ER stress, inflammatory, fibrosis and antioxidant genes in a dose dependent manner. Our results indicated that IAM can impede the ER stress and inflammatory genes and it could be a complementary and alternative therapeutic agent for oxidative stress associated disorders., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

Objective: To assess the adherence level of obstetricians towards postpartum diabetes screening guidelines., Methods: The quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention study was conducted from May 2014 to April 2015 at Aga Khan Hospital for Women-Karimabad, Karachi, and comprised all obstetricians practicing at the time. All the booked women with gestational diabetes delivered in the 6 months before refresher lecture (group 1) and those delivering in the 6 months following the intervention (group 2) were included. Data was analysed using SPSS 19., Results: Of the 550 cases, 275(50%) each were in groups 1 and 2. All pregnant women had live-birth. The intervention made it thrice likely (95% confidence interval: 7.83) that a physician advised postpartum oral glucose tolerance test. Caesarean section increased the chances of getting test advice almost 4 times (95% confidence interval: 1.70, 9.10) compared to women who delivered vaginally. Women managed on insulin with / without metformin were 4 times likely to being advised the test compared to women managed on diet (confidence interval: 1.00, 17.09). Full-time employees advised 7 times more than the visiting obstetricians (confidence inter val: 1.33, 35.16)., Conclusions: It is time for more strategic planning regarding patient education the benefits of detection of abnormal glucose tolerance in early postpartum period.
