For two states of opposite parity that cross as a function of an external magnetic field, the addition of an electric field will break the symmetry and induce an avoided crossing. A suitable arrangement of fields may be used to create a conical intersection as a function of external spatial coordinates. We consider the effect of the resulting geometric phase for ultracold polar molecules. For a Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field approximation, the geometric phase effect induces stable states of persistent superfluid flow that are characterized by half-integer quantized angular momentum.

We explore the potential energy surfaces for NH molecules interacting with alkali-metal and alkaline-earth atoms using highly correlated ab initio electronic structure calculations. The surfaces for interaction with alkali-metal atoms have deep wells dominated by covalent forces. The resulting strong anisotropies will produce strongly inelastic collisions. The surfaces for interaction with alkaline-earth atoms have shallower wells that are dominated by induction and dispersion forces. For Be and Mg the anisotropy is small compared to the rotational constant of NH, so that collisions will be relatively weakly inelastic. Be and Mg are thus promising coolants for sympathetic cooling of NH to the ultracold regime.

This paper describes the application of a relatively simple, but computationally tractable, "particle-on-a-sphere" (POS) model for quantum-mechanical calculation of large-amplitude, H atom dynamics in polyatomic hydrides (XH(n)), based on radially relaxed, two-dimensional angular motion of H atoms on the surface of a sphere. This work focuses on systems with many degrees of freedom, i.e., XH(4) (eight dimensional) and XH(5) (ten dimensional), with corresponding molecular analogs of CH(4) and CH(5) (+) and is applicable to rovibrationally excited states with J> or =0. A pairwise-additive potential fit for CH(5) (+), which yields remarkable agreement with geometries, energies, and barrier heights on the full-dimensional surface of Brown et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 4105 (2004)] is presented. Comparisons with experimental data and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) methods test convergence for the POS model and provide insight into multidimensional quantum rovibrational dynamics. In particular, POS energy-level patterns for a series of scaled CH(5) (+) potentials indicate an absence of strong tunneling behavior, consistent with the highly delocalized wave functions, large zero-point energies, and small interconversion barriers noted in previous DMC studies of Brown et al.

A potential energy surface for the lowest quartet electronic state ((4)A(')) of lithium trimer is developed and used to study spin-polarized Li+Li(2) collisions at ultralow kinetic energies. The potential energy surface allows barrierless atom exchange reactions. Elastic and inelastic cross sections are calculated for collisions involving a variety of rovibrational states of Li(2). Inelastic collisions are responsible for trap loss in molecule production experiments. Isotope effects and the sensitivity of the results to details of the potential energy surface are investigated. It is found that for vibrationally excited states, the cross sections are only quite weakly dependent on details of the potential energy surface.

New ab initio potential energy surfaces for the (2)Pi ground electronic state of the Ar-SH complex are presented, calculated at the RCCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV5Z level. Weakly bound rotation-vibration levels are calculated using coupled-channel methods that properly account for the coupling between the two electronic states. The resulting wave functions are analyzed and a new adiabatic approximation including spin-orbit coupling is proposed. The ground-state wave functions are combined with those obtained for the excited (2)Sigma(+) state [D. M. Hirst, R. J. Doyle, and S. R. Mackenzie, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 6, 5463 (2004)] to produce transition dipole moments. Modeling the transition intensities as a combination of these dipole moments and calculated lifetime values [A. B. McCoy, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 170 (1998)] leads to a good representation of the experimental fluorescence excitation spectrum [M.-C. Yang, A. P. Salzberg, B.-C. Chang, C. C. Carter, and T. A. Miller, J. Chem. Phys. 98, 4301 (1993)].

A general, full-dimensional computational method for the accurate calculation of rotationally and vibrationally excited states of tetra-atomic molecules is further developed. The resulting computer program may be run in serial and parallel modes and is particularly appropriate for molecules executing wide-amplitude motions and isomerizations. An application to the isomerizing acetylene/vinylidene system is presented. Large-scale calculations using a coordinate system based on orthogonal satellite vectors have been performed in six dimensions and vibrational term values and wave functions for acetylene and vinylidene states up to approximately 23 000 cm(-1) above the potential minimum have been determined. This has permitted the characterization of acetylene and vinylidene states at and above the isomerization barrier. These calculations employ more extensive vibrational basis sets and hence consider a much higher density of states than in any variational calculations reported hitherto for this system. Comparison of the calculated density of states with that determined empirically suggests that our calculations are the most realistic achieved for this system to date. Indeed more states have been converged than in any previous study of this system. Calculations on lower lying excited states of acetylene based on HC-CH diatom-diatom coordinates give nearly identical results to those based on orthogonal satellite vectors. Comparisons are also made with calculations based on HH-CC diatom-diatom coordinates.

We have carried out quantum dynamical calculations of vibrational quenching in Li + Li(2) collisions for both bosonic (7)Li and fermionic (6)Li. These are the first ever such calculations involving fermionic atoms. We find that for the low initial vibrational states considered here (v < or = 3), the quenching rates are not suppressed for fermionic atoms. This contrasts with the situation found experimentally for molecules formed via Feshbach resonances in very high vibrational states.

The Rb-NH interaction is investigated as a prototype for interactions between alkali-metal atoms and stable molecules. For spin-aligned Rb and NH that interact on a quartet surface (4A"), the interaction is relatively weak, with a well depth of 0.078 eV. However, there are also doublet surfaces of ion-pair character that are very much deeper (well depth 1.372 eV). They may be important for atom-molecule collision rates and offer the possibility of forming strongly dipolar molecules by photoassociation. Similar deeply bound ion-pair states are likely to exist for other alkali atom-molecule pairs.
