To accurately evaluate the pollution and risk of heavy metals in crops and farmlands near mines, we determined the contents of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in 10 farmland soil sampling sites and six crops (pak choi, rice, spring onion, radish, Chinese cabbage, Chrysanthemum coronarium ) in an area near the Niujiaotang Pb-Zn mine in Duyun City, China. Four evaluation methods were compared, including the potential ecological hazard index, Nemeiro comprehensive pollution assessment, risk assessment code, and the ratio of secondary phase to primary phase methods. The average concentration of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn exceeded the soil environmental background levels in Niujiaotang and Guizhou Province. Cd exceeded the standard substantially, and Zn pollution accumulation was the most evident. Heavy metal contamination of crops was in the order pak choi > Chinese cabbage > spring onion > paddy > radish > Chrysanthemum coronarium , whereas heavy metal concentration in crops were in the order Zn > As > Cr > Cd > Ni > Pb. The levels of all heavy metals except Cu exceeded Chinese food hygiene standards. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic chemicals in crops present significant risks to adults and children. Risk evaluation considering the morphological contents of heavy metals rather than their total concentration was more accurate for environmental quality assessment of agricultural soils. Samples should be collected at different times to study the spatial and temporal distribution, and further studies on the migration transformation of heavy metals between the tailings pond-soil-crop should be conducted.

Caohai Lake is a typical natural lake-type karst plateau wetland, which is sensitive to environmental changes, and the release of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in sediment is a potential factor of nitrogen pollution in this lake. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics and source analysis of DON in karst lake sediment. Surface sediment samples were collected from Caohai Lake in southwest China, and the sample locations were distributed across almost the entire wetland area, during both the wet and dry seasons. The DON content and fluorescence spectroscopy were determined and analysed using a three-dimensional fluorescence-parallel factor analysis (3DEEM-PARAFAC) model. The mean DON content in the sediment during the dry season (67.79 ± 42.96 mg/kg) was higher than that in the wet season (28.57 ± 20.97 mg/kg). There were four fluorescent components of DON in the sediment: C1 (tyrosine-like protein), C2 (terrestrial humus), C3 (tryptophan-like protein) and C4 (terrestrial humus). The DON in the surface sediment of Caohai Lake was influenced by terrestrial sources and biological activities. These findings help reveal the circulation mechanism of endogenous nitrogen in the lake and provide theoretical support for the prevention and control of nitrogen pollution in Caohai Lake., (© 2022. Guanine nucleotide-binding (G) proteins, namely, phosphate-binding (P) loop GTPases, play a critical role in life processes among different species. Based on the structural characteristics, G proteins can be divided into heterotrimeric G proteins, small G proteins and multiple unique unconventional G proteins. The highly conserved unconventional G protein YchF is composed of a core G domain, an inserted coiled-coil domain, and a TGS domain from the N-terminus to the C-terminus. In this review, we compared the structural characteristics of the G domain in rice OsYchF1 with those of Rattus norvegicus heterotrimeric G protein α-subunit and human small G protein Ras-related G protein C and analyzed the binding modes of these G proteins with GTP or ATP by performing molecular dynamics simulations. In summary, it will provide new insights into the enormous diversity of biological function of G proteins.

The weathering and leaching of mining tailings have released large amounts of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As), causing serious pollution in the surrounding soil, water, and sediments. To understand the leaching characteristics of Sb and As in mining tailings, Zuoxiguo and Qinglong mining tailings were collected for analysis. The average content of Sb in Zuoxiguo and Qinglong tailings was 5902.77 mg/kg and 1426.43 mg/kg, respectively, while that of As was 412.53 mg/kg and 405.26 mg/kg, respectively, which exceeded the local background value. Furthermore, the concentrations of Sb in the leachate of Zuoxiguo and Qinglong increased with time; the average Sb concentration in the leachate of Zuoxiguo and Qinglong was 1470.48 μg/L and 70.20 μg/L, respectively, while that of the As concentration was 31.20 μg/L and 6.45 μg/L, respectively. This suggests that the concentrations of Sb and As in the leachate of Zuoxiguo are both higher than those in the leachate of Qinglong and that the pH of the leachate of Zuoxiguo and Qinglong significantly changed within the first day under different initial pH conditions, and tended to be between 6 and 8, after one day. The results of the average health risk index showed that As in the leachate from Zuoxiguo and Qinglong for children was 5.67 × 10 -4 and 9.13 × 10 -5 , respectively, and 4.43 × 10 -4 and 7.16 × 10 -5 , respectively, for adults. As in the leachate from Zuoxiguo poses serious carcinogenic risks for residents, and in the study area, As poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the local government must manage As in these areas.

Introduction: Clarifying the links between iron and FGF23, SOX9 expression in chondrocytes would be helpful for comprehending articular cartilage degradation pathogenesis in blood-induced arthritis and exploring new protective methods., Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine iron regulation of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and SRY-box 9 (SOX9) in human chondrocytes, an area which is unexplored in blood-induced arthritis cartilage degradation pathogenesis., Methods: Expression of FGF23, SOX9, MMP13 and collagen Ⅱ in articular cartilage of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) or haemophilic arthritis (HA) was determined by western blot (WB). Iron-induced FGF23 and SOX9 mRNA and protein expression in primary human normal chondrocyte cells (HUM-iCell-s018) was quantified by qRT-PCR and WB, respectively., Results: We found that compared with OA patients, the expression of FGF23, MMP13 in articular cartilage of patients with HA was up-regulated, while the expression of SOX9, collagen Ⅱ was down-regulated. A regional air quality model system (RAQMS) driven by the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is applied to investigate the distribution and evolution of mineral dust and anthropogenic aerosols over China in April 2020, when air quality was improved due to reduced human activity during the COVID-19 epidemic, whereas dust storms began to attack China and deteriorated air quality. A dust deflation model was developed and improved mineral dust prediction. Model validation demonstrated that RAQMS was able to reproduce PM 10 , PM 2.5 and aerosol components reasonably well. China suffered from three dust events in April 2020, with the maximum hourly PM 10 concentrations exceeding 700 μg m -3 in downwind cities over the North China Plain (NCP). Mineral dust dominated PM 10 mass (>80%) over the Gobi deserts in north and west China, while it comprised approximately 30-50% of PM 10 over wide areas of east China. The domain and monthly mean dust mass fractions in PM 10 were estimated to be 47% and 43% over the North China Plain and east China, respectively. On average, mineral dust contributed up to 22% and 21% of PM 2.5 mass over the North China Plain and east China in April 2020, respectively. Sulfate and nitrate produced by heterogeneous chemical reactions on dust surface accounted for approximately 9% and 13% of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) concentration over the North China Plain and east China, respectively. Objectives: This study is aimed at determining whether CT-based radiomics models can help differentiate renal angiomyolipomas with minimal fat (AMLmf) from other solid renal tumors., Methods: This retrospective study included 58 patients with a postoperative pathologically confirmed AMLmf (observation group) and 140 patients with other common renal tumors (control group). Non-contrast-enhanced CT and contrast-enhanced CT data were evaluated. Radiomics features were extracted from manually delineated volume of interest (VOIs). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used for feature screening. Five classifiers, including logistic regression, multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), k -nearest neighbor (KNN), and logistic regression (LR), were used, with leave-out validation (128 training, 60 testing). The diagnostic performance of the classifier was evaluated and compared by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis., Results: Among the 1029 extracted features, prediction models of AMLmf were composed, by 2, 10, 4, and 9 selected features for precontrast phase (PCP), corticomedullary phase (CMP), nephrographic phase (NP), and excretory phase (EP), respectively. Models of CMP and NP achieved adequate performance after using MLP classifier, with prediction accuracy of 0.767 (AUC 0.85, sensitivity 0.76, and specificity 0.78) and 0.783 (AUC 0.83, sensitivity 0.79, and specificity 0.78), respectively. MLP model of features selected from the combination of the all features had the best diagnostic performance (accuracy 0.8500, sensitivity 0.8095, specificity 0.9444, and AUC 0.9193)., Conclusions: Radiomics features may help to distinguish benign AMLmf from common malignant kidney masses, which may contribute to the selection of interventions for renal tumors., Competing Interests: YX was employed by Huiying Medical Technology Company. Introduction: Studying the pathological changes of ligaments in patients with haemophilic arthritis (HA) has important significance for guiding the release of ligaments during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and exploring interventions to prevent ligament lesions., Aim: This study was conducted to show the pathological changes and investigate the lysine oxidase (LOX) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, -2, and -3 levels in the ligaments of patients with HA compared with those of patients with osteoarthritis (OA)., Methods: Ligaments obtained during the TKA were stained with Masson trichrome, Verhoeff-Van Gieson and haematoxylin and eosin to show the basic pathological changes. Collagen I, elastin, LOXs and MMP-1, -2, and -3 expression levels were detected via western blot. LOX and MMP-1, -2, and -3 mRNA expression levels were analysed via quantitative real-time PCR., Results: Compared with OA ligaments, HA ligaments were constructed more loosely with wider gaps, more breaks, haemocytodeposition and local hypertrophy among the fibres. LOXs and MMP mRNA expression levels were upregulated in the HA tissues, which was consistent with the western blot results. Collagen I and elastin levels were also higher in patients with HA., Conclusions: The metabolism of the ligaments in patients with HA is more complex than in those with OA, and the ligaments of patients with HA have stronger healing and destruction processes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in soils around an antimony smelter at Qinglong together with the soil pollution levels and potential ecological risk. The results show that (1) total concentrations of As (23 ~ 539 mg/kg) and Sb (19.7 ~ 5681 mg kg -1 ) were higher than the Guizhou province-level background values (As, 20; Sb, 2.24), especially Sb. Their dominant geochemical speciation was the residual fraction which accounted for > 90% of the total concentrations. (2) The distribution of As and Sb in soils influenced mainly by land-use type, altitude, predominant wind direction, and distance from the pollution source. (3) The geo-accumulation index shows that the soil was highly contaminated with Sb and moderately with As. The potential ecological risk index shows that As posed a moderate risk and Sb a high risk. Background: The Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology guidelines 2018 and the recent update of that (version 2020) recommends accurate examination before major treatment for decision(s) in cases of colon cancer. Also, the difficulty in the identification of the lesion during colectomy may lead to resection of a wrong segment of the colon or a more extensive resection than planned. Accurate pre-colectomy local staging of colon cancer is required to make decisions for treatment of colon cancer. The objective of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the computed tomography colonography (CTC) for pre-colectomy tumor location and tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) staging of colon cancer., Methods: Data of preoperative colonoscopies, CTC, surgeries, and surgical pathology of a total of 269 patients diagnosed with colon cancer by colonoscopy and biopsy and underwent pre-colectomy location and TNM staging by CTC were collected and analyzed. The consistency between the radiological and the surgery/surgical-pathological for location and TN stages of colon tumor were estimated with the weighted kappa or kappa coefficient (κ) at 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: CTC detected 261 (93%) and colonoscopy detected 201 (72%) correct locations of tumors. Sensitivity and accuracy of CTC for detection of location of colon tumors were 100% and 92.58% (κ = 0.89; 95% Cl: 0.83-0.95). 72.48% sensitivity, 90.64% specificity, and 83.57% accuracy were reported for CTC in differentiation of tumors confined to the colon wall (T1/T2) from advanced tumors (T3/T4) (κ = 0.69, 95% Cl: 0.51-0.75). 81.01% sensitivity, 89.11% specificity, and 83.93% accuracy of CTC was reported for differentiation of tumors between low-intermediate risk and high risk (κ = 0.68, 95% Cl: 0.53-0.75). 69.31% sensitivity, 66.15% specificity, and 67.14% accuracy of CTC were reported for N staging of tumors (κ = 0.41, 95% Cl: 0.59-0.69)., Conclusions: CTC has high diagnostic parameters for pre-colectomy location and T staging of colon tumors except patients of colon cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy., Level of Evidence: III., Technical Efficacy Stage: 2.

The pollution of heavy metals and their harm to human health and the ecological environment have caused widespread concern. In this research, we collected Qinglong antimony mine tailings (8-meter deep) and then analyzed the content changes, geochemical behavior, and ecological risk assessment of 7 heavy metals (Sb, As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb) in the tailing profile, providing a theoretical basis for strengthening the source control and risk control of heavy metals. In addition, the chemical forms of Sb and As were analyzed, and the relationship between their forms and their physical and chemical properties was analyzed by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that the concentrations of Sb (671.97-13896.62 mg/kg), As (287.38-657.36 mg/kg), Cu (27.61-74.48 mg/kg), and Cd (0.49-1.76 mg/kg) in the tailings greatly exceeded their background values, those of Pb (15.67-125.74 mg/kg) and Cr (22.69-185.88 mg/kg) moderately exceed their background values, while that of Zn (41.66-94.48 mg/kg) was slightly below its background value. Among the chemical forms of Sb and As, the residual fraction (F4) had the highest concentration. RDA showed that the pH and tailing particle size were significantly correlated with the chemical species content of Sb and As (p < 0.05). The improved I geo analysis showed that the tailings were extremely polluted with Sb; highly polluted with As; uncontaminated to moderately polluted with Cd, Cu, and Pb; and uncontaminated with Zn and Cr, and the average I geo values were in the following order: Sb >As > Pb > Cd > Cu > Zn > Cr. The potential environmental risk index showed that Sb and As imposed a serious risk and Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn imposed a low risk, which was basically consistent with the results of the improved I geo values. This research provides comprehensive theoretical approaches to better understand the source control and risk control of heavy metals in tailing ponds.

Black carbon (BC) is the most important aerosol light-absorbing component, and its effect on radiation forcing is determined by its microphysical properties. In this study, two microphysical parameters of refractory BC (rBC), namely, size distribution and mixing state, in urban Beijing from 2013 to 2019 were investigated to understand the effects of source changes over the past years. The mass equivalent diameter of rBC (D c ) exhibited bimodal lognormal distributions in all seasons, with the major modes accounting for most (>85%) of the rBC masses. The mass median diameter (MMD) was obviously larger in winter (209 nm) than in summer (167 nm) likely due to the contribution of more rBC with larger D c from solid fuel combustion and enhanced coagulation of rBC in polluted winter. More rBC particles were thickly coated in winter, with the number fraction of thickly coated rBC (f coatBC ) ranging within 29%-48% compared with that of 12%-14% in summer. However, no evidential increase in BC light-absorption capability was observed in winter. This finding was likely related to the lower absorption efficiency of larger rBC in winter, which partly offset the coating-induced light enhancement. Two stage of decreases in MMD and f coatBC were observed, accompanied with a persistent decrease in rBC loading, thereby reflecting the discrepant effects of source control measures on rBC loading and physical properties. The control measures in the earlier stage before 2016 was more efficient to reduce the rBC loading but slightly influenced the microphysical properties of rBC. As of 2016, the reduction in rBC concentration slowed down because of its low atmospheric loading. However, rBC showed a more obvious decrease in its core size and became less coated. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neurological disorder that occurs in patients with liver insufficiency. However, its pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Pharmacotherapy is the main therapeutic option for HE. It targets the pathogenesis of HE by reducing ammonia levels, improving neurotransmitter signal transduction, and modulating intestinal microbiota. Compared to healthy individuals, the intestinal microbiota of patients with liver disease is significantly different and is associated with the occurrence of HE. Moreover, intestinal microbiota is closely associated with multiple links in the pathogenesis of HE, including the theory of ammonia intoxication, bile acid circulation, GABA-ergic tone hypothesis, and neuroinflammation, which contribute to cognitive and motor disorders in patients. Restoring the homeostasis of intestinal bacteria or providing specific probiotics has significant effects on neurological disorders in HE. DSC-TG-FTIR-MS coupling technology was used to study the mechanism of two typical binders, that is, BR and F 2604 , on the thermal decomposition behavior of the HMX crystal. The results show that both BR and F 2604 can induce premature decomposition of HMX and increase the activation energy of HMX. Especially in the case of HMX/BR particles, the decomposition temperature is the lowest, but the activation energy is the highest. Based on the results of DSC-TG-FTIR-MS, it is found that the rapid mechanism of binder and active intermediate products inhibits the reaction of relatively inert intermediate products and prolongs the continuous generation time of gas products in the composite particles, which delays the decomposition of HMX to a certain extent. Background: There is a large difference in postoperative survival in patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer. We aimed to develop nomograms incorporating both hematological biomarkers and clinical characteristics to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with radical surgery for non-metastatic colorectal cancer., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on date from 508 patients who underwent radical resection of colorectal cancer at the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from December 2011 to December 2015. Simple random sampling was performed by dividing these patients into a training set (n=355) and validation set(n=153), which yielded a 7:3 ratio in the sample sizes between these groups. Based on COX regression analysis of the results from the training cohort, a nomogram was developed to predict the three-year and five-year overall survival rate, and internal verification was also performed. The nomogram prediction accuracy and discriminating ability were evaluated by Harrell's C-index (C-index), calibration curves and were compared with the colorectal cancer TNM staging system., Results: We found that age, degree of differentiation, T stage, N stage, neurological invasion, neutrophils, monocytes, HGB, and LDH were independent risk factors for predicting OS in patients with colorectal cancer. In the training cohort, the C index was 0.796 (95% CI: 0.761-0.831). In the validation cohort, the C index was 0.671 (95% CI: 0.656-0.686).The nomogram showed a stronger predictive ability than did TNM staging. Decision curve analysis showed that the nomogram had value in terms of clinical application., Conclusion: Our nomogram combined hematological biomarkers and clinical characteristics and was highly effective in predicting OS in patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer. A regional air quality model system (RAQMS) with a volatility basis set approach for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation and an emission inventory of semi-volatile (SVOC) and intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOC) are applied to investigate the distribution and evolution of organic aerosols over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in winter 2014, with focus on Beijing. Model validation demonstrates the model is capable of reproducing meteorological variables and major aerosol components, and the model significantly improves SOA and organic aerosol (OA) simulations by taking S/IVOCs (SVOC + IVOC) and relevant aging processes into account. SVOC and IVOC emissions in the BTH region are estimated to be 0.47 Tg and in a range of 0.09-0.36 Tg, respectively, which are about 18% and 4-14% of the emission amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The distribution of mean organic aerosols is characterized by a high concentration belt oriented southwest-northeast from southern Hebei to Beijing, with the maximum concentration up to 50 μg m -3 in Beijing and Shijiazhuang. The simulated SOA concentration is comparable in magnitude to primary organic aerosol (POA) concentration, and the SOA/OA ratio is around 50% in most areas of the BTH region. In terms of domain average, the percentage contributions to SOA mass concentration from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs), SVOCs, IVOCs and biogenic VOCs are estimated to be 46.1%, 40.1%, 9.4% and 4.4%, respectively, in the BTH region during the study period, which indicates an important role of S/IVOCs in SOA formation. From clean to haze periods, both POA and SOA concentrations apparently increase, with an increasing (decreasing) trend of the SOA/OA (POA/OA) ratio. SOA dominates over POA in fine organic aerosols during the haze periods. The increase of POA in hazy days is mainly due to the weakened vertical diffusion and accumulation near the surface, whereas the increase of SOA is likely attributed to both the reduced diffusivity and a series of competing chemical processes, in which the decreased photolysis rate by aerosol attenuation tends to decrease SOA concentration by about 6% during the most severe haze day, whereas the lower surface air temperature and higher POA and S/IVOC concentrations in haze days both enhance gas to particle partition, and consequently lead to higher SOA concentration., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential significance of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) in differentiating high-grade pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNENs) from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A total of 50 patients, including 37 patients with PDAC and 13 patients with high-grade pNENs, underwent pancreatic multiple b-values DWI with 15 b-values including 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200, 400, 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 and 2,000 sec/mm 2 . Standard apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC standard ) and IVIM parameter [slow apparent diffusion coefficient (D slow ), fast apparent diffusion coefficient (D fast ), fraction of fast apparent diffusion coefficient (ƒ)] values of PDAC and pNENs were compared. P<0.05 was considered to indicate a statistically significant difference. Receiver operating characteristics analysis was performed in order to evaluate the diagnostic potential of IVIM parameters for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. D slow of pNENs was significantly lower compared with that of PDAC (0.460 vs. 0.579×10 -3 mm 2 /sec; P=0.001). D fast of pNENs was significantly higher compared with that of PDAC (13.361 vs. 4.985×10 -3 mm 2 /sec; P<0.001). Area under the curve of D slow , D fast and combined D slow and D fast was 0.793, 0.863 and 0.885 respectively. The specificity and sensitivity of D slow ≤0.472×10 -3 mm 2 /sec were 97.3 and 53.9%, respectively, for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. The specificity and sensitivity of D fast >9.58×10 -3 mm 2 /sec were 91.9 and 69.2%, respectively, for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. When D slow and D fast were combined, the specificity and sensitivity for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC were 76.9 and 100%, respectively. Taken together, these results indicated that the diffusion-associated parameter D slow and the perfusion-associated parameter D fast of IVIM-DWI may differentiate high-grade pNENs from PDAC with high diagnostic accuracy, and that IVIM-DWI may be a valuable biomarker in differentiating pancreatic neoplasms., (Copyright: © Ma et al.)

The characteristics, distributions, and direct radiative effects (DRE) of marine aerosols in the western Pacific Ocean over East Asia during the period from 17 March to 22 April 2014 were investigated by an online-coupled regional atmospheric chemistry/aerosol-climate model RIEMS-Chem (Regional Integrated Environmental Model System with Chemistry). The emissions and relevant processes of sea salt, marine primary organic aerosol (MPOA), sulfate and Methyl sulfonic acid (MSA) produced from dimethylsulfide (DMS) were parameterized and coupled with RIEMS-Chem. The model results for total aerosol masses (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ), inorganic and carbonaceous aerosols, gas precursors, and aerosol optical depth (AOD) were compared with various observational data sets including a research cruise Dongfanghong II from the Yellow Sea to the open oceans, near-surface aerosol and gas concentrations from the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) and China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC), and AOD from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). Model comparisons demonstrated a generally good skill of the RIEMS-Chem in representing the temporal and spatial variations of these variables. The distributions of marine aerosols were characterized by the maximum sea salt concentration up to 70 μg m -3 in the ocean northeast of Japan, the maximum concentration of MPOA >2 μg m -3 in the East China Sea and in portions of the northwest Pacific (NWP) region, and the maximum DMS-produced aerosol concentration >0.3 μg m -3 in the southern parts of the ocean. It was noteworthy that marine aerosols can be easily transported to the inland areas of south China. The clear-sky DREs by sea salt ranging from -9 to -17 W/m 2 occurred in the open oceans northeast of Japan, comparable to the DREs of -10 ~ -20 W/m 2 by anthropogenic aerosols, whereas the DREs by MPOA were strongest (up to -1.3 Wm -2 ) in the East China Sea and the oceans northeast of Japan due to active phytoplankton blooms there and comparable in magnitude to the DREs by sea salt (around -3 Wm -2 ) in the East China Sea. The maximum DRE by the DMS-produced aerosols was -0.4 Wm -2 mainly in the northern parts of the South China Sea. Sea salt exhibited an increasing radiative importance from the China marginal seas to the open oceans, accounting for 10% and 33% of the DREs by all aerosols, respectively. Under all-sky conditions, the sum of DREs by all the marine aerosols were estimated to be -2.2 W/m 2 , -3.5 W/m 2 , -2.3 W/m 2 , and -4.3 W/m 2 averaged over the entire domain, ocean, East China Sea, and the NWP region, accounting for 20%, 27%, 13%, and 36% of the DREs by all aerosols, respectively, which demonstrated the important role of marine aerosols in modulating shortwave radiation in springtime in the western Pacific Ocean which was just downwind of the Asian continent with large amounts of anthropogenic and dust emissions., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. In the process of bone regeneration, relatively early biological events including inflammatory response, angiogenesis, or stem cell homing, help the accompanying target actions of cell differentiation and calcification. Herein, we proposed a novel cell-guided tissue engineering system based on a surface-functionalized porous hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds with the ability to recruit cells and accelerate the differentiation of them along the osteoblastic lineage for optimizing large-sized bone defect repair. Inspired by microstructural properties of natural bone, HA scaffolds similar to the trabecular bone structure were prepared via a sugar sphere leaching technique, in which the inter-pore opening size was controllable. Dexamethasone (Dex)-loaded hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin microspheres (Dex@CDMs) and stromal cell derived factor-1 (SDF-1) were uniformly immobilized onto HA surface by a cross-linked alginate coating. The resulting scaffold (SDF-1/Dex@CDMs-HA) enabled the on-demand dual-delivery of SDF-1 and Dex. In vitro cell culture assays showed that initially released SDF-1 markedly stimulated the migration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to the deep interior of the scaffold, providing abundant target cells for the function of Dex which was subsequently released. Osteogenic differentiation potential of these cells was also further facilitated via a synergistic action of SDF-1 and Dex. Additionally, in vivo studies demonstrated that the cell-guided system effectively improved the early cell recruitment and vascularization within the deep interior of scaffold and significantly accelerated the extensive formation of osteoid and mineralized tissue compared with the controls. Accordingly, such a microsphere coating-decorated multifunctional scaffold shows a promising potential for cell-free bone tissue engineering applications., (Copyright © 2018. Here, a new kind of Salecan derived polysaccharide metallohydrogel was reported. Successful fabrication of Salecan metallohydrogel was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and rheological measurements. Scanning electron microscope investigations have been conducted to elucidate the morphology of Salecan/Cr 3+ gel (SCgel). We found that the pore size of metallohydrogel can be tailored by adjusting the Cr 3+ dose during gel formation. After that, swelling and de-swelling behaviors were systematically studied. The increasing of chromium ion concentration and the presence of saline solutions will cause the decrease of swelling percentage. It is assumed that the decreasing hydrophilicity of Salecan, the increase of crosslinking density, and the complexation of the carboxylate group with saline ions are the main syneresis mechanisms. Zhijin coal-mining district, located in Midwestern Guizhou Province, has been extensively exploited for several decades. The discharge of acid mine drainage (AMD) has constituted a serious threat to local water environmental quality, which greatly affected the normal use of local people. The Permian limestone aquifer is the essential potable water supply for local people, which covered under the widely distributed coal seams. To investigate the origin of the water, the evolutionary processes, and the sources of dissolved sulfate in the karst waters, the mine water, surface water, and groundwater near the coal mines were sampled for stable isotopes (H, O, and S) and conventional hydrochemical analysis. The results of hydrochemistry and isotopic composition indicate that the regional surface water and partial karst groundwater are obviously affected by coal-mining activities, which is mainly manifested in the increase of water solute concentration and the change of hydrochemical types. The isotopic composition of δ 2 H H2O and δ 18 O H2O indicates that the major recharge source of surface water and the groundwater is atmospheric precipitation and that it is influenced obviously by evaporation in the recharge process. The surface water is mainly controlled by the oxidation of pyrite, as well as the dissolution of carbonate rocks, whereas that of natural karst waters is influenced by the dissolution of carbonate rocks. The resulting δ 34 S SO4 values suggest that the dissolved sulfate source in the surface water is mainly pyrite oxidation but atmospheric precipitation for the karst groundwater. Given the similar chemistry and isotopic composition between surface water and partial groundwater, it is reasonable to assume that most of the dissolved sulfate source in part of the groundwater was derived through the oxidation of pyrite in the coal. Furthermore, the contamination of the surface water and partial groundwater from the coal seam has occurred distinctly in the catchment, which is enriched in SO 4 2- and is mostly depleted δ 34 S in sulfate.

Regional transport and chemical conversions are two major processes that lead to the severe haze pollution in China. Our observations during five haze episodes in Beijing between February 19 and March 12 of 2014 show that the two processes played different roles as PM 2.5 increased from the clean (<75μgm -3 ) to the light-medium pollution level (75-150μg m-3) and to levels of heavy (150-250μgm -3 ) and severe (>250μgm -3 ) pollution. In the initial twelve hours of each episode, the PM 2.5 reached the light-medium level with an increase of approximately 120μgm -3 . At the same time, the particle (~10-700nm) number concentration also showed a distinct increase accompanied by a rapid increase in the mean diameter. A light-medium PM 2.5 occurred in the south areas prior to the haze occurrence in Beijing and the southerly winds were predominant, indicating the rapid increase of PM 2.5 in the initial stage was caused by the regional transport from the south. Subsequently, PM 2.5 elevated to the heavy and severe levels when the wind was weak, relative humidity was high and ozone concentration was low. The increase of PM 2.5 in the elevated stages was characterized by a high percentage (45% for the heavy level and 55% for the severe level) of secondary inorganic components, indicating the substantial contribution of the formation of secondary aerosols. In addition, the increases of the mean diameter (from 108nm to 120nm) and the total volume concentration (by 67%) are regarded as a consequence of heterogeneous reactions on the surfaces of aerosol particles because the particle number concentration remained nearly constant in these two stages. Our results indicate that, during the five winter haze episodes, the regional transport from the south was the major reason for the initial-stage PM 2.5 increase, while heterogeneous reactions dominated the later elevation., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Aerosol optical properties and the effect of hygroscopic growth on the scattering coefficients at a rural site in the southern North China Plain were investigated based on a two-month observation conducted in the summer of 2014. The scattering coefficient of dry aerosols was high, with a mean (±standard deviation) of 338.8±209.9Mm -1 (520nm) during the observation period. A noticeable enhancement in aerosol scattering due to hygroscopic growth was observed, e.g., by a factor of 2.28±0.69 at RH of 80% (referred to as f(RH=80%)) and 3.39±1.14 at RH of 85% (f(RH=85%)). The high content of water-soluble secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs), accounting for 53.1% of fine particulate matter (i.e., PM 2.5 ) on average, was mainly responsible for the high hygroscopicity. f(RH=80%) increased with increasing SIA mass fraction in PM 2.5 . This was especially the case when SIAs were mainly in finer particulate matter, i.e., PM 1 . A number of considerably low f(RH=80%) values was observed due to relatively low mass fraction of SIAs in PM 1 despite high fraction in PM 2.5 . Particle size distributions, especially those of SIAs, also played a remarkable role in the hygroscopicity of ambient aerosols. No significant difference in hygroscopicity was found between different pollution episodes due to the dominance of SIAs in all the cases. To improve the understanding of NH 3 variation in urban Beijing, high temporal resolution (1-min averaged) NH 3 data derived during the summer of 2009 were analyzed. The results indicated that after rain there was generally an increase in NH 3 concentration. The analysis of the 1-min data revealed that a weak but significant linear correlation existed between NH 3 and NO x in August, indicating a connection between NH 3 concentrations and traffic levels during summer. This was further supported by peak NH 3 levels approximately coinciding with morning rush hours. The daily NH 3 concentrations were weakly correlated with NH 4 + concentrations, suggesting that NH 3 played an important precursor role in NH 4 + in PM 2.5 formation. The mean mass ratio of NH 3 /NH x was 0.76±0.13. This revealed that NH x (NH 3 +NH 4 + ) was influenced by local sources during the summer period and that NH 3 dry deposition could contribute substantially to NH x deposition. A high temperature, relative humidity, and degree of oxidization could increase photochemical reactions and aqueous processing, having the important effect of SO 2 to SO 4 2- and NH 3 to NH 4 + conversion in summer. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by dyslipidemia and mediated by both innate and adaptive immune responses. Inflammation is a critical factor at all stages of atherosclerosis progression. Proinflammatory cytokines accelerate atherosclerosis progression, while anti-inflammatory cytokines ameliorate the disease. Accordingly, strategies to inhibit immune activation and impede immune responses towards anti-inflammatory activity are an alternative therapeutic strategy to conventional chemotherapy on cardiocerebrovascular outcomes. Since a number of Chinese medicinal plants have been used traditionally to prevent and treat atherosclerosis, it is reasonable to assume that the plants used for such disease may suppress the immune responses and the resultant inflammation. This review focuses on plants that have immunomodulatory effects on the production of inflammatory cytokine burst and are used in Chinese traditional medicine for the prevention and therapy of atherosclerosis.

Comprehensive identification of somatic structural variations (SVs) and understanding their mutational mechanisms in cancer might contribute to understanding biological differences and help to identify new therapeutic targets. Unfortunately, characterization of complex SVs across the whole genome and the mutational mechanisms underlying esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is largely unclear. To define a comprehensive catalog of somatic SVs, affected target genes, and their underlying mechanisms in ESCC, we re-analyzed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from 31 ESCCs using Meerkat algorithm to predict somatic SVs and Patchwork to determine copy-number changes. We found deletions and translocations with NHEJ and alt-EJ signature as the dominant SV types, and 16% of deletions were complex deletions. SVs frequently led to disruption of cancer-associated genes (e.g., CDKN2A and NOTCH1) with different mutational mechanisms. Moreover, chromothripsis, kataegis, and breakage-fusion-bridge (BFB) were identified as contributing to locally mis-arranged chromosomes that occurred in 55% of ESCCs. These genomic catastrophes led to amplification of oncogene through chromothripsis-derived double-minute chromosome formation (e.g., FGFR1 and LETM2) or BFB-affected chromosomes (e.g., CCND1, EGFR, ERBB2, MMPs, and MYC), with approximately 30% of ESCCs harboring BFB-derived CCND1 amplification. Furthermore, analyses of copy-number alterations reveal high frequency of whole-genome duplication (WGD) and recurrent focal amplification of CDCA7 that might act as a potential oncogene in ESCC. Our findings reveal molecular defects such as chromothripsis and BFB in malignant transformation of ESCCs and demonstrate diverse models of SVs-derived target genes in ESCCs. Recurrent lumbar disc herniation (rLDH) is a common complication following primary discectomy. This systematic review aimed to investigate the current evidence on risk factors for rLDH.Cohort or case-control studies addressing risk factors for rLDH were identified by search in Pubmed (Medline), Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane library from inception to June 2015. Relevant results were pooled to give overall estimates if possible. Heterogeneity among studies was examined and publication bias was also assessed.A total of 17 studies were included in this systematic review. Risk factors that had significant relation with rLDH were smoking (OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.53-2.58), disc protrusion (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.15-2.79), and diabetes (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.06-1.32). Gender, BMI, occupational work, level, and side of herniation did not correlate with rLDH significantly.Based on current evidence, smoking, disc protrusion, and diabetes were predictors for rLDH. Patients with these risk factors should be paid more attention for prevention of recurrence after primary surgery. More evidence provided by high-quality observational studies is still needed to further investigate risk factors for rLDH.

In response to increasing trends in sulfur deposition in Northeast Asia, three countries in the region (China, Japan, and Korea) agreed to devise abatement strategies. The concepts of critical loads and source-receptor (S-R) relationships provide guidance for formulating such strategies. Based on the Long-range Transboundary Air Pollutants in Northeast Asia (LTP) project, this study analyzes sulfur deposition data in order to optimize acidic loads over the three countries. The three groups involved in this study carried out a full year (2002) of sulfur deposition modeling over the geographic region spanning the three countries, using three air quality models: MM5-CMAQ, MM5-RAQM, and RAMS-CADM, employed by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean modeling groups, respectively. Each model employed its own meteorological numerical model and model parameters. Only the emission rates for SO(2) and NO(x) obtained from the LTP project were the common parameter used in the three models. Three models revealed some bias from dry to wet deposition, particularly the latter because of the bias in annual precipitation. This finding points to the need for further sensitivity tests of the wet removal rates in association with underlying cloud-precipitation physics and parameterizations. Despite this bias, the annual total (dry plus wet) sulfur deposition predicted by the models were surprisingly very similar. The ensemble average annual total deposition was 7,203.6 ± 370 kt S with a minimal mean fractional error (MFE) of 8.95 ± 5.24 % and a pattern correlation (PC) of 0.89-0.93 between the models. This exercise revealed that despite rather poor error scores in comparison with observations, these consistent total deposition values across the three models, based on LTP group's input data assumptions, suggest a plausible S-R relationship that can be applied to the next task of designing cost-effective emission abatement strategies.
