The high ionic conductivity and good oxidation stability of halide-based solid electrolytes evoke strong interest in this class of materials. Nonetheless, the superior oxidative stability compared to sulfides comes at the expense of limited stability toward reduction and instability against metallic lithium anodes, which hinders their practical use. In this context, the gradual fluorination of Li 2 ZrCl 6- x F x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.2) is proposed to enhance the stability toward lithium-metal anodes. The mechanochemically synthesized fluorine-substituted compounds show the expected distorted local structure (M2-M3 site disorder) and significant change in the overall Li-ion migration barrier. Theoretical calculations reveal an approximate minimum energy path for Li 2 ZrCl 6- x F x ( x = 0 and 0.5) with an increase in the Li + migration energy barrier for Li 2 ZrCl 5.5 F 0.5 in comparison to Li 2 ZrCl 6 . However, it is found that the fluorine-substituted compound exhibits substantially lower polarization after 800 h of lithium stripping and plating owing to enhanced interfacial stability against the lithium metal, as revealed by density functional theory and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thanks to the formation of a fluorine-rich passivating interphase.

Background: Hospital-acquired infections represent increasing problems in health-care facilities worldwide. Adequate infection control measures are key elements in preventing those infections. Expert societies have published recommendations that help to reduce Hospital-acquired infections., Methods: In November 2019, a questionnaire-based point-prevalence survey, eliciting the adherence of 14 Tyrolean hospitals to the recommendations of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was performed. Additionally, standard infection control measures performed by different medical (clinical and infection control specialists) disciplines as well as the performed infection control measures of nurses and physicians were compared., Results: The survey revealed varying adherence to CDC-recommendations of different medical disciplines, with highest congruence by the infection control specialists and lower congruencies by all surveyed clinical disciplines. Concordance rate between nurses and physicians was high., Discussion: Explanations for the varying congruencies of clinical disciplines on the one hand and the infection control specialists on the other hand may be versatile. Possible lacks of knowledge about the required hygiene measures should be taken into account., Conclusions: The present survey showed moderate adherence of Tyrolean hospitals to the recommendations provided by CDC, however with noticeable differences between different medical disciplines. Electrolytes are considered crucial for the performance of batteries, and therefore indispensable for future energy storage research. This paper presents data that describes the effect of the electrolyte composition on the ionic conductivity. In particular, the data focuses on electrolytes composed of ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ). The mass ratio of EC to PC was varied, while keeping the mass ratio of (EC + PC) and EMC at fixed values of 3:7 and 1:1. The conducting salt concentration was also varied during the study. Conductivity data was obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at various temperatures. Based on the thus obtained temperature series, the activation energy for ionic conduction was determined during the analysis. The data is presented here in a machine-readable format and includes a Python package for analyzing temperature series of electrolyte conductivity according to the Arrhenius equation and EIS data. Shared autonomy aims at combining robotic and human control in the execution of remote, teleoperated tasks. This cooperative interaction cannot be brought about without the robot first recognizing the current human intention in a fast and reliable way so that a suitable assisting plan can be quickly instantiated and executed. Eye movements have long been known to be highly predictive of the cognitive agenda unfolding during manual tasks and constitute, hence, the earliest and most reliable behavioral cues for intention estimation. In this study, we present an experiment aimed at analyzing human behavior in simple teleoperated pick-and-place tasks in a simulated scenario and at devising a suitable model for early estimation of the current proximal intention. We show that scan paths are, as expected, heavily shaped by the current intention and that two types of Gaussian Hidden Markov Models, one more scene-specific and one more action-specific, achieve a very good prediction performance, while also generalizing to new users and spatial arrangements. Candidemia poses a major threat to ICU patients and is routinely diagnosed by blood culture, which is known for its low sensitivity and long turnaround times. We compared the performance of a novel, Candida -specific multiplex real-time PCR assay (Fungiplex ® Candida IVD Real-Time PCR Kit) with blood culture and another established diagnostic real-time PCR assay (LightCycler SeptiFast Test) with respect to Candida detection from whole blood samples. Clinical samples from 58 patients were analyzed by standard blood culture (BC) and simultaneously tested with the Fungiplex Candida PCR (FP) and the SeptiFast test (SF) for molecular detection of Candida spp. Compared to BC, the FP test showed high diagnostic power, with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 94.1%. Overall diagnostic accuracy reached 94.6%. Using SF, we found a sensitivity of 60%, a specificity of 96.1%, and an overall diagnostic accuracy of 92.9%. The Fungiplex Candida PCR has shown good sensitivity and specificity on clinical samples of high-risk patients for direct detection of Candida species in whole blood samples. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (eHUS) is a severe complication of human infections with Shiga toxins (Stxs)-producing Escherichia coli. A key step in the pathogenesis of eHUS is the interaction of Stxs with blood components before the targeting of renal endothelial cells. Here, we show that a single proteolytic cleavage in the Stx2a A-subunit, resulting into two fragments (A1 and A2) linked by a disulfide bridge (cleaved Stx2a), dictates different binding abilities. Uncleaved Stx2a was confirmed to bind to human neutrophils and to trigger leukocyte/platelet aggregate formation, whereas cleaved Stx2a was ineffective. Conversely, binding of complement factor H was confirmed for cleaved Stx2a and not for uncleaved Stx2a. It is worth noting that uncleaved and cleaved Stx2a showed no differences in cytotoxicity for Vero cells or Raji cells, structural conformation, and contaminating endotoxin. These results have been obtained by comparing two Stx2a batches, purified in different laboratories by using different protocols, termed Stx2a(cl; cleaved toxin, Innsbruck) and Stx2a(uncl; uncleaved toxin, Bologna). Stx2a(uncl) behaved as Stx2a(cl) after mild trypsin treatment. Background: Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) are an emerging problem in health care settings. The purpose of the investigation was to assess the extent of the outbreak including environmental contamination and to limit further transmission., Methods: We used retrospective patient and laboratory data including pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing and virulence and resistance gene analysis. For comparison of medians the Mann-Whitney and for comparison of proportions the Fisher exact tests were used., Results: PFGE typing of VRE strains of an outbreak of 15 VRE cases in a solid transplant unit revealed that nine of the cases belonged to one identical pattern (A), which was only found twice in the environment. Eleven further positive environmental samples showed a different, but identical PFGE pattern E. Only one patient was infected with this environmental strain.Two of nine (22.2%) PFGE A, but nine of eleven (81.2%) PFGE E samples were positive for gelatinase E ( p  = 0.01), which is described as enhancing biofilm production, suggesting a survival benefit for this strain on inanimate surfaces., Conclusion: Routine disinfection was not able to stop the cluster, but after repeated enforcement of the infection prevention and control (IPC) bundle such as training, strict adherence to hand hygiene and surface disinfection no further cases were observed. We conclude that certain VRE strains predominate in the environment whereas others predominate in humans. Possible effects of clothianidin seed-treated oilseed rape on honey bee colonies were investigated in a large-scale monitoring project in Northern Germany, where oilseed rape usually comprises 25-33 % of the arable land. For both reference and test sites, six study locations were selected and eight honey bee hives were placed at each location. At each site, three locations were directly adjacent to oilseed rape fields and three locations were situated 400 m away from the nearest oilseed rape field. Thus, 96 hives were exposed to fully flowering oilseed rape crops. Colony sizes and weights, the amount of honey harvested, and infection with parasites and diseases were monitored between April and September 2014. The percentage of oilseed rape pollen was determined in pollen and honey samples. After oilseed rape flowering, the hives were transferred to an extensive isolated area for post-exposure monitoring. Total numbers of adult bees and brood cells showed seasonal fluctuations, and there were no significant differences between the sites. The honey, which was extracted at the end of the exposure phase, contained 62.0-83.5 % oilseed rape pollen. Varroa destructor infestation was low during most of the course of the study but increased at the end of the study due to flumethrin resistance in the mite populations. In summary, honey bee colonies foraging in clothianidin seed-treated oilseed rape did not show any detrimental symptoms as compared to colonies foraging in clothianidin-free oilseed rape. The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) acts both as a developmental signal and as an integrator of environmental cues such as drought and cold. ABA perception recruits an ABA-binding regulatory component [regulatory component of ABA receptor (RCAR)/PYR1/PYL] and an associated protein phosphatase 2C (PP2C). Phytohormone binding inactivates the phosphatase activity of the coreceptor, permitting phosphorelay of the ABA signal via downstream protein kinases. RCARs and PP2C coreceptors are represented by small protein families comprising 14 and 9 members in Arabidopsis, respectively. The specificity of the RCAR-PP2C interaction and the constraints contributing to specific combinations are poorly understood. In this contribution, we analyzed RCAR7/PYL13, which is characterized by three variant amino acid residues in the conserved ABA-binding pocket. RCAR7 regulated the phosphatase activity of the PP2Cs ABI1, ABI2, and PP2CA in vitro at nanomolar ABA levels; however, it was unable to regulate the structurally related hypersensitive to ABA 1 (HAB1). Site-directed mutagenesis of HAB1 established ABA-dependent regulation by RCAR7. Conversion of the noncanonical amino acid residues of RCAR7 into the consensus ABA-binding pocket did not perceptibly change receptor function. Ectopic expression of RCAR7 in Arabidopsis resulted in ABA hypersensitivity affecting gene regulation, seed germination, and stomatal closure. The RCAR7 loss-of-function mutant revealed no changes in ABA responses, similar to the RCAR9 knockout line, whereas the combined deficiency of RCAR7 and RCAR9 resulted in ABA-insensitive seed germination. The study shows a role of RCAR7 in early plant development, proves its ABA receptor function, and identifies structural constraints of RCAR7-PP2C interaction.

Type 2C protein phosphatases (PP2Cs) form a structurally unique class of Mg(2+)-/Mn(2+)-dependent enzymes. PP2Cs are evolutionary conserved from prokaryotes to higher eukaryotes and play a prominent role in stress signalling. In this review, we focus on the evolution, function and regulation of the plant PP2Cs. The development of insecticides requires valid risk assessment procedures to avoid causing harm to beneficial insects and especially to pollinators such as the honeybee Apis mellifera. In addition to testing according to current guidelines designed to detect bee mortality, tests are needed to determine possible sublethal effects interfering with the animal's vitality and behavioral performance. Several methods have been used to detect sublethal effects of different insecticides under laboratory conditions using olfactory conditioning. Furthermore, studies have been conducted on the influence insecticides have on foraging activity and homing ability which require time-consuming visual observation. We tested an experimental design using the radiofrequency identification (RFID) method to monitor the influence of sublethal doses of insecticides on individual honeybee foragers on an automated basis. With electronic readers positioned at the hive entrance and at an artificial food source, we obtained quantifiable data on honeybee foraging behavior. This enabled us to efficiently retrieve detailed information on flight parameters. We compared several groups of bees, fed simultaneously with different dosages of a tested substance. With this experimental approach we monitored the acute effects of sublethal doses of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid (0.15-6 ng/bee) and clothianidin (0.05-2 ng/bee) under field-like circumstances. At field-relevant doses for nectar and pollen no adverse effects were observed for either substance. Both substances led to a significant reduction of foraging activity and to longer foraging flights at doses of ≥0.5 ng/bee (clothianidin) and ≥1.5 ng/bee (imidacloprid) during the first three hours after treatment. This study demonstrates that the RFID-method is an effective way to record short-term alterations in foraging activity after insecticides have been administered once, orally, to individual bees. We contribute further information on the understanding of how honeybees are affected by sublethal doses of insecticides.

The stridulation of the giant pill-millipede genus Sphaerotherium from South Africa, one of only three groups of millipedes that produce sounds, was studied. One hundred one stridulation series of a total of nine different species (Sphaerotherium dorsaloide, Sphaerotherium hanstroemi, Sphaerotherium mahaium, Sphaerotherium similare, Sphaerotherium punctulatum, Sphaerotherium convexitarsum, Sphaerotherium dorsale, Sphaerotherium rotundatum, and Sphaerotherium perbrincki) were analyzed. Stridulation sounds are produced only with a special field of ribs on the posterior surface of the posterior telopod, which is actively moved over a field of sclerotized nubs on the inner margin of the anal shield. The Sphaerotherium male usually stridulates only when in contact with a female to initiate mating. This seems to prevent the female from volvating into a ball or stimulate the female to uncoil when already rolled in. The sound analyzes revealed a broad frequency spectrum in all stridulation sounds produced, without obvious differences in frequency distribution among species. However, the temporal pattern of the stridulation varies greatly between species and seems to be species-specific, arguing for a species recognition function of the stridulation during courtship behavior. A single species (S. punctulatum) was found to stridulate during mating while three species also show postcopulatory stridulation. Apparently, pill-millipedes are not capable of acoustic perception, as no hearing organs are known, indicating that the communication is mainly based on perception of temporal vibration patterns, and not of the acoustic signal itself. The need to overcome the rolling-in reflex of the female is developed as a hypothesis why stridulation exists only in millipedes able to coil into a ball, and apparently evolved four times independently in the superorder Oniscomorpha.

Although texts and wall paintings suggest that bees were kept in the Ancient Near East for the production of precious wax and honey, archaeological evidence for beekeeping has never been found. The Biblical term "honey" commonly was interpreted as the sweet product of fruits, such as dates and figs. The recent discovery of unfired clay cylinders similar to traditional hives still used in the Near East at the site of Tel Re ov in the Jordan valley in northern Israel suggests that a large-scale apiary was located inside the town, dating to the 10th-early 9th centuries B.C.E. This paper reports the discovery of remains of honeybee workers, drones, pupae, and larvae inside these hives. The exceptional preservation of these remains provides unequivocal identification of the clay cylinders as the most ancient beehives yet found. Morphometric analyses indicate that these bees differ from the local subspecies Apis mellifera syriaca and from all subspecies other than A. m. anatoliaca, which presently resides in parts of Turkey. This finding suggests either that the Western honeybee subspecies distribution has undergone rapid change during the last 3,000 years or that the ancient inhabitants of Tel Re ov imported bees superior to the local bees in terms of their milder temper and improved honey yield.

Background: Praziquantel (PZQ) is the drug compound of choice in the control and treatment of schistosomiasis. PZQ is administered as a racemate, i. e. 1ratio1 mixture of enantiomers. The schistosomicidal activity arises from one PZQ-enantiomer, whereas the other enantiomer does not contribute to the activity. The WHO's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) has assigned the low-cost preparation of pure schistosomicidal (-)-PZQ a key priority for future R&D on PZQ, but so far this transition has not happened. PZQ has two major administration drawbacks, the first being the high dose needed, and its well documented bitter and disgusting taste. Attempts of taste-masking by low-cost means have not been successful. We hypothesized that the non-schistosomicidal component in PZQ would be the main contributor to the unpleasant taste of the drug. If the hypothesis was confirmed, the two major administration drawbacks of PZQ, the high dose needed and its bitter taste, could be addressed in one go by removing the component contributing to the bitter taste., Methods and Findings: PZQ was separated into its schistosomicidal and the non-schistosomicidal component, the absolute stereochemical configuration of (-)-PZQ was determined to be (R)-PZQ by X-ray crystallography, and the extent of bitterness was determined for regular racemic PZQ and the schistosomicidal component in a taste study in humans., Finding: The schistosomicidal component alone is significantly less bitter than regular, racemic PZQ., Conclusion: Our hypothesis is confirmed. We propose to use only the pure schistosomicidal component of PZQ, offering the advantage of halving the dose and expectedly improving the compliance due to the removal of the bitter taste. Therefore, (R)-PZQ should be specifically suitable for the treatment of school-age children against schistosomiasis. With this finding, we would like to offer an additional incentive to the TDR's recommendation to switch to the pure schistosomicidal (R)-PZQ.

The objective of this study is to determine the treatment result of severe fractures of the tibial pilon using a two-stage treatment plan with a singular implant type. The setting is a level 1 trauma centre, the design a consecutive series of patients with a retrospective data evaluation. Due to anatomical circumstances, soft-tissue treatment is extremely important for fractures of the tibial plafond. After promising results reported about a two-staged treatment plan with external fixation and secondary internal fixation, we incorporated this method in our treatment protocol. This consisted in a second stage of internal fixation with a specifically developed locked pilon plate with multi-directional applicable screws. Between March 2000 and February 2005, 42 patients with high-energy fractures of the tibial plafond were treated using a two-staged treatment plan: firstly the fracture was stabilized with an external fixator immobilizing the ankle joint. Secondly, after stabilization of the soft-tissue situation (mean 9.2 days) open reduction and internal fixation with a locked-screw plate was performed. Complications experienced included three cases of superficial wound necrosis, in two cases a deep vein thrombosis occurred. All fractures healed but two patients needed an early bone graft because of insufficient bony consolidation. At follow-up, six Patients had no deficit in the range of movement of the ankle compared with the unaffected side, 19 patients experienced a deficit of movement of less then one third compared to the opposite side. In 27 cases no or only mild posttraumatic arthritis of the ankle occurred. There was no secondary loss of reduction or need for arthrodesis. The mean AOFAS score was 73.4 (52-97). A two-stage treatment plan in fractures of the distal lower limb with external fixation followed by locked-plate osteosynthesis reduces local complications with a good functional result.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor influences flight behavior, orientation and returning success of forager honeybees (Apis mellifera) infested as adults. As impaired orientation toward the nest entrance might be due to deficiency in recognition and responsiveness to stimuli in the environment, we examined effects of V. destructor on sensory responsiveness, non-associative and associative learning of honey bee foragers by using proboscis extension reaction paradigm (PER). Although infested and uninfested workers were initially equally responsive to different concentrations of sugar water, we found differences in non-associative learning. In habituation, PER to repeated sugar stimulation of the antennae occurred faster in infested foragers compared to uninfested foragers. In sensitization, infested foragers showed a lower response to an odor stimulus following sugar stimulation than non-infested foragers. Differences in non-associative paradigms were more pronounced in bees with lower responsiveness to sucrose. In conditioning learning experiments, a significant reduction in proboscis extension response was found 1 min but not 12 min after a single conditioning trial indicating that V. destructor predominantly affects the non-associative components of learning and its underlying neural and molecular processes.

In the present study, a less known polyester based on tartaric acid was characterized with respect to its degradation mechanism. Poly(2,3-(1,4-diethyl tartrate)-co-2,3-isopropyliden tartrate) (PTA) differs from commonly used biodegradable polyesters, such as poly(lactides-co-glycolides) (PLGA) by the presence of additional cleavable bonds in the polymer side chains. This modification results in different polymer properties and influences polymer degradation. The hydrolytic degradation of PTA was studied in parallel to PLGA using disc-shape matrices, which were obtained by compression-molding. The discs were incubated in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution at 37 degrees C. The degraded samples were characterized for percentage mass loss, water absorption, decay of molecular weight and change in glass transition temperature. The results demonstrate that the degradation of PTA proceeds via bulk erosion similar to PLGA. However, the degradation of PTA implants is characterized by a rapid mass loss within a short period of time appearing after a definite lag phase without remarkable mass loss. This makes the polymer promising for pulsatile drug release systems.

Biodegradable polymers have been extensively studied for numerous drug delivery systems for human health purposes. The ever-increasing value of animals to human society allows the application of pharmaceutical developments in the veterinary field from those developed in human medicine. Although many similarities between the human and animal health industries exist there are also notable differences. This paper provides an insight into the animal health market with regard to the challenges and special considerations associated with veterinary drug delivery. It also gives an overview of biodegradable polymers that are used or have been tested in the veterinary field. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some recent developments in this area and to investigate the directions in which veterinary pharmaceutics is heading. In particular, examples of existing biodegradable veterinary drug delivery systems are presented together with applications including intravaginal devices, injectables and implantable systems.

Background: The Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valve is designed to optimize hemodynamics, reduce thrombogenicity, and avoid mechanical failure with a special hinge mechanism. The purpose of the study was to investigate the clinical performance and postoperative hemodynamic results of the first European patients receiving Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valves., Methods: From March 1998 to March 1999 a total of 54 Edwards MIRA valves model numbers 3600 (aortic, n = 44) and 9600 (mitral, n = 10) were implanted in 52 (36 male, 16 female; mean age 61 +/- 10.1 years) consecutive patients undergoing mechanical valve replacement in a prospective study. Follow-up of the patients including physical examination, ECG, blood tests, and Doppler were performed prior to discharge, at 6 months, at 1 year, and at least 2 years postoperatively., Results: Through October 2001 a total of 172 follow-up examinations were completed (51 patients at discharge, 46 patients at 6 months, 43 patients at 12 months, 32 patients at 2 years or beyond). All patients were in NYHA class I and II at the 6-month and 2+-year follow-up. All the patients stated an improved quality of life. Hospital mortality was 1.9%. There were no complications related to anticoagulation. Mean international normalized ratio at 6 months was 3.2 (range 1.9 to 4.3); lactate dehydrogenase was slightly increased with 264 +/- 103 U/L on average (normal value 80 to 240 U/L). No signs of valvular dysfunction or paravalvular leakage were observed. Mean pressure gradients were related to valve diameter: after mitral valve replacement (size 27, 29, 31 mm: 4.8, 3.2, 2.1 mmHg); after aortic valve replacement (size 19, 21, 23, 25 mm: 12.1, 13.1, 9.3, 8.2 mmHg)., Conclusions: These preliminary data suggest good hemodynamic function and a low rate of valve-related complications of the Edwards-MIRA mechanical prosthesis.

Here we investigated the possibility to develop different levels of correlation between in vitro drug release profiles and in vivo pharmacokinetic parameters for three Buserelin implant formulations. The in vitro and in vivo data were analyzed using model-independent and model-dependent methods. Since diffusion, dissolution and erosion effects influence drug release in most cases a simple kinetic model is unlikely to explain the overall in vivo release behavior. Thus the in vitro drug release curves were analyzed according to the theoretical models of Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas. For the formulation with predominant diffusion controlled release level A IVIVC could be established (R2=0.986). Independent on drug release mechanism, a level B correlation between the mean in vitro dissolution time (MDT) and mean in vivo residence time (MRT) was obtained with a correlation coefficient of 0.983. Finally, level C correlation were observed when single in vitro parameters, e.g. T50% (time required to release 50% of drug in vitro) where compared with single in vivo parameters like AUC. This study suggests that a level B correlation could be achieved even when drug release occurs by a combination of diffusion and erosion processes. More sophisticated in vitro models mimicking drug release under in vivo conditions are clearly desirable for parenteral depot formulations.

In a retrospective study, two groups of patients with delayed or non-union of the humeral diaphysis were compared. In group A, a 4.5-mm low-contact dynamic compression plate (LCDCP) was used for internal fixation and in group B, an internal plate fixator with locked screws was used. In all patients autologous bone grafting was performed. Group A consisted of 14 patients (mean age 38.9 years) and group B consisted of 19 patients (mean age 54.3 years). The mean duration of the delayed or non-union was 9.3 months (range 3-26 months) in group A and 24.8 months (range 3-216 months) in group B. In group A an average of 1.1 (range 0-2) previous operations had been performed, and in group B an average of 1.6 (range 0-4). One primary nerve palsy was diagnosed in group A and six in group B. Although the patients of group B were older, had longer-lasting non-unions, more previous operations and more severe initial injuries, only in group A was there a hardware failure due to osteoporosis which required re-osteosynthesis. All other patients showed bony consolidation without further operations. The LCDCP and the internal plate fixator both showed high consolidation rates, but we feel that the internal plate fixator may be the more reliable implant, especially in patients with poor bone stock.

Honeybee colonies maintain brood nest temperatures of 33-36 degrees C. We investigated brood nest thermoregulation at the level of individual worker behaviour and the transfer of heat from workers to the brood. Worker bees contribute to the regulation of brood nest temperature by producing heat while sitting motionless on the caps of brood cells. We report here an additional, newly observed heating strategy where heating bees enter empty cells between sealed brood cells and remain there motionless for periods of up to 45 min. Individually marked worker bees on the surface of sealed brood cells maintained thorax temperatures (T(th)) between 32.2+/-1.0 degrees C and 38.1+/-2.5 degrees C (mean +/- S.D.; N=20 bees) with alternating warming and cooling periods. Most of the observed bees made one or several long-duration visits (>2 min) to empty cells within the sealed brood area. T(th) at the time bees entered a cell [T(th(entry))] was 34.1-42.5 degrees C (N=40). In 83% of these cell visits, T(th(entry)) was higher (up to 5.9 degrees C; mean 2.5+/-1.5 degrees C; N=33) than the mean T(th) of the same bee. High values of T(th(entry)) resulted from preceding heating activity on the comb surface and from warm-ups just prior to cell visits during which T(th) increased by up to +9.6 degrees C. Bees inside empty cells had mean T(th) values of 32.7+/-0.1 degrees C (resting bees) to 40.6+/-0.7 degrees C (heat-producing bees) during long-duration cell visits without performing any visible work. Heating behaviour inside cells resembles heating behaviour on the brood cap surface in that the bees appear to be inactive, but repeated warmings and coolings occur and T(th) does not fall below the optimum brood temperature. Bees staying still inside empty cells for several minutes have previously been considered to be 'resting bees'. We find, however, that the heating bees can be distinguished from the resting bees not only by their higher body temperatures but also by the continuous, rapid respiratory movements of their abdomens. By contrast, abdominal pumping movements in resting bees are discontinuous and interrupted by long pauses. Heat transfer to the brood from individual bees on the comb surface and from bees inside empty cells was simulated under controlled conditions. Heating on the comb surface causes a strong superficial warming of the brood cap by up to 3 degrees C within 30 min. Heat transfer is 1.9-2.6 times more efficient when the thorax is in touch with the brood cap than when it is not. Heating inside empty cells raises the brood temperature of adjacent cells by up to 2.5 degrees C within 30 min. Heat flow through the comb was detectable up to three brood cells away from the heated thorax.

Oligomers are thought to accelerate the hydrolytic degradation of devices prepared from poly(lactide-co-glycolide), PLGA, due to their increased number of carboxylic end groups. To experimentally verify this hypothesis, two D,L-lactic acid oligomers having molecular weights close to their critical limit of solubility were synthesized and incorporated into PLGA films in three concentrations (0, 10, and 30% w/w). All films were translucent, rather flexible and initially amorphous. With increasing oligomer concentration the glass transition temperature (T(g)) and the molecular weight of films decreased prior to erosion. The degradation studies show that initial mass loss and water absorption are increased in oligomer-containing films as a function of average molecular weight and oligomer concentration. However, the incorporation of oligomers does not accelerate the degradation of films. By contrast, oligomer-containing films show extended lag phase until onset of polymer erosion. This was shown to be related to crystallization. Moreover, it was found that crystallization occurs earlier in oligomer-containing films and that the degree of crystallization is related to the average molecular weight of the oligomer. These findings bring new insight into the role of oligomers in the degradation process and can be used to explain why erosion in massive polymer devices occurs from the center to the surface.

A series of low molecular weight polymers of D,L-lactic acid has been synthesized. The oligomers were characterized with respect to molecular weight, glass transition temperature and solubility. The number average molecular weight of the oligomers ranged from 290 to 1320Da. Oligomers with an M(n)<800Da were soluble in buffer at pH 7.4 but insoluble in water and acidic medium. Kinetic studies were performed at pH 1.5, 4.5 and 7.4 using an accelerated in vitro monomer release test. The hydrolytic rate was dependent on molecular weight of oligomer, temperature and pH of the media, with the lowest rate found around pH 4.5. The activation energy was dependent on molecular weight and ranged from 47 to 67kJmol(-1). Random ester cleavage was identified as mechanism of hydrolysis in basic media whereas in acidic media chain-end cleavage ("unzipping") was the mode of action.

Honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera) maintain temperatures of 35-36 degrees C in their brood nest because the brood needs high and constant temperature conditions for optimal development. We show that incubation of the brood at the level of individual honeybees is done by worker bees performing a particular and not yet specified behaviour: such bees raise the brood temperature by pressing their warm thoraces firmly onto caps under which the pupae develop. The bees stay motionless in a characteristic posture and have significantly higher thoracic temperatures than bees not assuming this posture in the brood area. The surface of the brood caps against which warm bees had pressed their thorax were up to 3.2 degrees C warmer than the surrounding area, confirming that effective thermal transfer had taken place.

Defending a large social insect colony containing several thousands of workers requires the simultaneous action of many individuals. Ideally this action involves communication between the workers, enabling coordinated action and a fast response. The Asian dwarf honeybee, Apis florea, is a small honeybee with an open nesting habit and a comparatively small colony size, features that leave them particularly exposed to predators. We describe here a novel defence response of these bees in which the emission of an initial warning signal from one individual ("piping") is followed 0.3 to 0.7 seconds later by a general response from a large number of bees ("hissing"). Piping is audible to the human ear, with a fundamental frequency of 384 +/- 31Hz and lasting for 0.82 +/- 0.35 seconds. Hissing is a broad band, noisy signal, clearly audible to the human observer and produced by slight but visible movements of the bees' wings. Hissing begins in individuals close to the piping bee, spreads rapidly to neighbours and results in an impressive coordinated crescendo occasionally involving the entire colony. Piping and hissing are accompanied by a marked decrease, or even cessation, of worker activities such as forager dancing and departures from the colony. We show that whereas hissing of the colony can be elicited without piping, the sequential and correlated piping and hissing response is specific to the presence of potential predators close to the colony. We suggest that the combined audio-visual effect of the hissing might deter small predators, while the cessation of flight activity could decrease the risk of predation by birds and insects which prey selectively on flying bees.
