Abstract

Lean Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 (LDX2404) is the newest commercial type of duplex stainless steels, recently introduced by Outokumpu®. This paper investigates the dynamic tensile failure (spall strength) of this new alloy under different peak stresses (4.5 GPa to 8.2 GPa) via the recovered plate-impact experiment using a single stage gas gun. The microstructural investigation for the as-received and soft recovered post-shock material conditions were accomplished using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) and optical microscopy. The effect of the radial release waves and the effectiveness of using momentum trap rings on the spall strength and the spall damage during the impact experiment were studied. Results indicate that LDX2404 experienced spall damage for the entire range of tested peak stresses. The spall strength was not affected by the implementation of momentum trapping rings whereas; the damage content was highly influenced. The spall damage of LDX 2404 exists parallel to the phase boundary interfaces, which are normal to the impact direction. Abstract

Under ballistic impact or blast loading, the high strain rate and high temperature behaviour of armour steels is key to their response to a given threat. This experimental and numerical investigation examines the tensile response of a class 4a improved rolled homogenous armour steel (IRHA) and a high hardness armour steel (HHA). Cylindrical tensile specimens were tested at a range of strain rates from 0.001 s-1 to 2700 s-1. Quasi-static, elevated temperature tests were performed from room temperature up to 300°C. While the HHA is strain rate insensitive, the IRHA displays a significant increase in strength across the range of loading rates reducing the ultimate strength difference between the materials from 19% at 0.001s-1 to 4.6% at 2700s-1. An inverse numerical modelling approach for constitutive model calibration is presented, which accurately captured the dynamic material behaviour. The modified Johnson-Cook strength and Cockcroft-Latham (C-L) fracture models were capable of predicting the ballistic limit of each material to within 5% of the experimental result and to within 10% for deformation under blast loading. The blast rupture threshold of both materials was significantly over-estimated by the C-L model suggesting stress state or strain rate effects may be reducing the ductility of armour steel under localised blast loading. Abstract

This work studied the mechanical response and the associated microstructures and failure mechanisms of additively manufactured Ti matrix composites with in-situ synthesised Ti 2 Ni and TiC x reinforcements under a variety of loading rates. The composites were fabricated using directed energy deposition technique with Ti–6Al–4V (Ti64) and Ni coated graphite (NCG) powders. Different proportions of Ti64 and NCG were mixed to manufacture the specimens with different compositions. Compression tests were conducted at strain rates in the range of 10−3 to 800 s−1. Our results show that the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the composites change with the NCG fraction. The failure mechanisms of the composites are a combination of tensile fracture of brittle TiC x precipitates and shear of the Ti matrix. The composites with higher NCG content exhibit increased strength, reduced ductility and less strain rate sensitivity. Under high strain rate compression loading, the Ti–Ni–C composite can provide enhanced strength with the ductility unchanged, which make it a prospective material for the applications subjected to impact loads. Abstract

A general methodology to estimate dislocation density in cubic metals using microhardness measurements has been established. The proposed methodology is based on the Indention Size Effect (ISE) and microstructural strengthening mechanisms. The methodology was validated using published experimental data of a pure Nickel (FCC) and Tungsten (BCC), as well as our own data on dual phase (BCC and FCC) lean duplex stainless steel 2101(LDSS 2101). The estimations of dislocation densities for LDSS 2101 phases were confirmed via X-ray diffraction measurements. Abstract

The influence of peak compressive stress on the dyamic tensile fracture (spall) in a multi-phase steel, austenite, ferrite and martensite phases, was investigated in as-received and pre-strained conditions. Plate impact experiments were done at ⁓3.0 GPa and ⁓6.0 GPa compressive peak stresses. Results showed that peak stress increase results in about 20% increase in the spall strength for samples tested in the as-received condition, and about 15% increase for the pre-strained samples. These increases could be related to the effects of peak stress on the tensile stress that causes spallation. However, introducing plastic deformations in the pre-strained samples had negligible effects on the spall strength. Microstructural examinations revealed that incipient spall damage was parallel to the phase boundaries and mainly accommodated by ferrite grains as quasi-cleavage transgranular fracture. Samples shocked in the as-received condition with full spallation experienced a quasi-cleavage fracture within the ferrite compared with a cleavage fracture within the ferrite for samples shocked in the pre-strained condition. Deformation within the austenite phase due to plate-impact testing was dependent on the initial sample condition, the pre-strained samples showed more deformation than the as-received samples. Abstract

• Ti–Ni–C metal matrix composites with graded properties are additively manufactured. • Distribution densities and morphologies of TiC precipitates can be controlled • The microstructure of Ti–Ni–C composite changes gradually with chemical gradient • Ti–Ni–C composite becomes harder and more brittle with increasing Ni and C content Ti–Ni–C functionally graded composites were fabricated using a LENS™ additive manufacturing system. A vertical chemical gradient was created by varying powder inputs linearly from Ti–6Al–4V at the bottom layer to approximately 40%wt Ni coated graphite at the top layer. Our results show that the phase constitution, microstructure, and hardness of the composites gradually change with chemical composition. With an increasing Ni coated graphite content, the in-situ synthesised TiC precipitates are distributed more densely, and their morphologies change from tiny flakes to dendrites and finally become coralloid structures. Abstract

• Influence of impactor mass on impact behaviour of pultruded composites is studied. • Both external and internal damage characteristics are comparatively analysed. • A precursor damage mode to ultimate failure is observed for pultruded composites. This paper reports on the results of an experimental study on glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) pultruded profiles subjected to low-velocity impact loading. The effects of impactor mass on the impact response of pultruded composites were investigated. Composite specimens were tested under two series of loading conditions using a drop-weight impact facility. The first set of tests was conducted with different impactor masses (i.e. 5.5, 10.5, 15.5 and 20.5 kg) under the same impact energy of 67 J. The specimens in the second set were subjected to varying impactor masses of 6, 12, 24 and 36 kg at the same initial velocity of 4.4 m/s, resulting in different impact energies. The internal and external damage of pultruded composites was analysed to compare the failure mechanisms, including matrix cracking, delamination, and fibre breakage, as functions of the initial impact energy. The results showed that the extent of impact-induced damage increased with ascending impact energies (ascending impactor masses) up to the point at which the specimen was perforated. The initial impact energy was the dominant parameter that controlled the damage tolerance characteristics of pultruded composites. Abstract

Microstructural changes and ferrite phase transformation under shock loading, between 8.5 GPa and 17.5 GPa, in a hot-rolled Lean Duplex Stainless Steel (commercially known as LDX 2101) were investigated in as-received and pre-deformed conditions. The latter condition was considered to distinguish classical deformation twins at high strain rates from those associated to the reversible ferrite phase transformation. Plate impact experiments were used to introduce compressive shock loading at peak stresses below and above the stress threshold of the ferrite phase transformation, 13 GPa. Effects of shock loading were also examined by compressing shocked samples quasi-statically and comparing their response with those tested in the as-received condition. The microstructural examinations revealed that the ferrite in LDX 2101 experienced a reversible phase transformation at a peak stress of ~17 GPa. The fingerprints for this transformation were {112}<111> primary twins and {332}<113> primary and secondary twins. In addition, the yield stress of the sample pre-shocked at ~17 GPa showed a considerable increase (⁓150 MPa) compared to the flow stress in as-received conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

691. Dimensional quantification of embedded voids or objects in three dimensions using X-ray tomography.

Abstract

Scientific digital imaging in three dimensions such as when using X-ray computed tomography offers a variety of ways to obtain, filter, and quantify data that can produce vastly different results. These opportunities, performed during image acquisition or during the data processing, can include filtering, cropping, and setting thresholds. Quantifying features in these images can be greatly affected by how the above operations are performed. For example, during binarization, setting the threshold too low or too high can change the number of objects as well as their measured diameter. Here, two facets of three-dimensional quantification are explored. The first will focus on investigating the question of how many voxels are needed within an object to have accurate geometric statistics that are due to the properties of the object and not an artifact of too few voxels. These statistics include but are not limited to percent of total volume, volume of the individual object, Feret shape, and surface area. Using simple cylinders as a starting point, various techniques for smoothing, filtering, and other processing steps can be investigated to aid in determining if they are appropriate for a specific desired statistic for a real dataset. The second area of investigation is the influence of post-processing, particularly segmentation, on measuring the damage statistics in high purity Cu. The most important parts of the pathways of processing are highlighted.
