- Abstract
The ATHENA program bas been conceived to provide a systematic method for investigation of atmospheric reentry phenomena and, through the use of a test vehicle especially designed to reproduce ICBM trajectory dynamics, to facilitate the evaluation of advanced reentry concepts. The White Sands Missile Range has been selected to make critical reentry measurements. Green River, Utah, will be the launch site. Tracking radars will be provided at the launch site to perform flight safety surveillance, to provide acquisition data for range radars, and to monitor performance during the initial portion of the trajectory. This report contains discussions on (1) lauuch radar tracking precision, (2) launch radar optimum placement, (3) radar system and missile transponder parameters, and (4) maximum radar and missile transponder tracking capability.

- Abstract
This report describes the procedures and presents the results of the optical signature data reduction by the BMRS Data Center for Athena Flight Number 045 (Missile D023-QQ01). Part I of this report (a separate document) presents the radar signature data for this flight. No interim report was published on this flight and the data collection results have been incorporated in this report. The payload was a Mark 12 decoy and was the first of a series to be flown as a follow-up to the 'P' type payloads. The primary purpose of the test was to determine the effect of nose radius on body RCS during early re-entry with secondary objectives of wake onset altitudes, wake RCS characteristics, velocity-position history, and mass injection effects on body motion. Marginal data were obtained by the optical instrumentation which supported this mission because of the extensive cloud cover.

- Abstract
This document presents Propulsion Wind Tunnel (16T and 16S) test results performed on a full scale aft portion of the ATHENA H vehicle. The tests were conducted to evaluate fin tab effectiveness for roll augmentation, and to measure pressure on components of the ATHENA H tail and fin structure. The tests were conducted for tab deflection angles ranging from 0 to 30 degrees at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 4.0. The tests show that wedge tabs have more roll effectiveness than cantilever tabs, and pressure measurement provide realistic pressure over the tail and fin structure components. (Author)

- Abstract
The goddess Athena is currently perceived through a series of contradictions. She is both warrior and reconciler, killer and patron of the artisan, a goddess who denies her own womanhood and ignores the existence of women. Using Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and the extant complete plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, this thesis reconciles each of these contradictions both within themselves and with each other. It finds that Athena had a prominent role as goddess of the polis: as a warrior she protected the polis from the external threat of war, and as a reconciler she protected it from the internal threat of civil strife. As polis goddess, Athena encourages peace and prosperity in her city; this requires that she inspire the artisan with techne, and the politician with wisdom. As polis goddess, Athena was also concerned for the perpetuation of her city and as such protected the children who were to be the future citizens, and the mothers who bore and nurtured them. This thesis argues that, as patron of techne, Athena becomes the patron of all women's work (which was all craft work). From this association the evidence of civic religion and the drama is used to argue for a relationship between Athena and Athenian women which was independent from Athenian men, independent from their relationship with Athena, and just as special. A unified interpretation of Athena as the polis goddess affords us a fuller and more realistic image of her as the goddess of Athens and patron of all its people than does one based on the "Imperial Athena" of the fifth century who represents only one side of Athena's nature.

Event: SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2016, Edinburgh, United Kingdom., X-IFU: et al., The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) will provide spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy from 0.2 to 12 keV, with ~ 5" pixels over a field of view of 5 arc minute equivalent diameter and a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV. In this paper, we first review the core scientific objectives of Athena, driving the main performance parameters of the X-IFU, namely the spectral resolution, the field of view, the effective area, the count rate capabilities, the instrumental background. We also illustrate the breakthrough potential of the X-IFU for some observatory science goals. Then we brie y describe the X-IFU design as defined at the time of the mission consolidation review concluded in May 2016, and report on its predicted performance. Finally, we discuss some options to improve the instrument performance while not increasing its complexity and resource demands (e.g. count rate capability, spectral resolution)., We acknowledge support from the Athena Science Study Team, the Athena Working Group Chairs, the Athena Topical Panel Chairs and the Topical Panel members in strengthening the X-IFU top level performance requirements. Our team is developing the Cryogenic Anticoincidence Detector (CryoAC) of the ATHENA X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU). It is a 4-pixels TES-based detector, which will be placed less than 1 mm below the main TES array detector. We are now producing the CryoAC Demonstration Model (DM): a single pixel prototype able to probe the detector critical technologies, i.e. the operation at 50 mK thermal bath, the threshold energy at 20 keV and the reproducibility of the thermal conductance between the suspended absorber and the thermal bath. This detector will be integrated and tested in our cryogenic setup at INAF/IAPS, and then delivered to SRON for the integration in the X-IFU Focal Plane Assemby (FPA) DM. In this paper we report the status of the CryoAC DM development, showing the main result obtained with the last developed prototype, namely AC-S9. This is a DM-like sample, which we have preliminary integrated and tested before performing the final etching process to suspend the silicon absorber. The results are promising for the DM, since despite the limitations due to the absence of the final etching (high thermal capacity, high thermal conductance, partial TES surface coverage), we have been able to operate the detector with TB = 50 mK and to detect 6 keV photons, thus having a low energy threshold fully compatible with our requirement (20 keV)., Comment: Proceeding of the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2018

Silicon Pore Optics (SPO), developed at cosine with the European Space Agency (ESA) and several academic and industrial partners, provides lightweight, yet stiff, high-resolution X-ray optics. This technology enables ATHENA to reach an unprecedentedly large effective area in the 0.2-12 keV band with an angular resolution better than 5". After developing the technology for 50 m and 20 m focal length, this year has witnessed the first 12 m focal length mirror modules being produced. The technology development is also gaining momentum with three different radii under study: Mirror modules for the inner radii (Rmin = 250 mm), outer radii (Rmax = 1500 mm) and middle radii (Rmid= 737 mm) are being developed in parallel.

Systematic reproduction and distribution, duplication of any material in this publication for a fee or for commercial purposes, and modification of the contents of the publication are prohibited. The BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray) facility under construction at INAF-Brera Astronomical Observatory aims at performing the acceptance tests of the Silicon Pore Optics mirror modules of the ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics) X-ray observatory. The facility implements a grazing-incidence collimating mirror that, together with a monochromator and a beam expander stages based on crystals, enables the full X-ray illumination of the mirror modules under test. We present the development and test of the collimating mirror, a paraboloid sector having an optical surface of 400 mm -60 mm and sagittal radii of about 155 mm. The ground and lapped optics made of HOQ 310 fused quartz was corrected by bonnet polishing. In this paper, we report on the smoothing of mid-to-high spatial frequency error by pitch-tool polishing process, and on the correction of residual surface shape errors by ion-beam figuring process, both performed at INAF-Brera Astronomical Observatory. We present the X-ray test campaigns carried out on the mirror at PANTER facility, before and after coating it with a Pt layer via magnetron sputtering at DTU Space. The results provide an overview of the mirror performance in terms of angular resolution pre- and post-coating deposition.

ATHENA is an on-going Horizon 2020 Twinning project aiming to promote remote sensing technologies for cultural heritage (CH) applications in Cyprus. ATHENA project brings together the Eratosthenes Research Center (ERC) of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) with two internationally leading institutions of Europe, namely the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The project’s scope is to position the ERC regionally and stimulate future cooperation through placements at partner institutions and enhance the research and academic profile of all participants. The scientific strengthening and networking achieved through the ATHENA project could be of great benefit not only for Cyprus but for the entire Eastern Mediterranean, bearing a plethora of archaeological sites and monuments urgently calling for monitoring and safeguarding. The preservation of CH and landscape comprises a strategic priority not only to guarantee cultural treasures and evidence of the human past to future generations, but also to exploit them as a strategic and valuable economic asset. The objective of this paper is to present knowledge transfer examples achieved from the ATHENA project through intense training activities. These activities were also designed to enhance the scientific profile of the research staff and to accelerate the development of research capabilities of the ERC. At the same time the results from the training activities were also exploited to promote earth observation knowledge and best practices intended for CH. The activities included active and passive remote sensing data used for archaeological applications, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image analysis for change and deformation detection, monitoring of risk factors related to cultural heritage sites including archaeological looting etc.

Cult ,Phaselis ,Athena ,Athena Polias - Abstract
This article presents a newly discovered votive inscription found during the course of the 2013 survey conducted at the ancient city of Phaselis and in its territory1. The inscription was found where the stairs to the acropolis from the southwest of the theatre end, in front of the west wall of the tower structure give access to the acropolis Fig. 1b-2 . This inscription in the Doric dialect, on a limestone block measuring 0.315 x 0.77 x 0.61 m., records a dedication to Athena Polias. The letters 0.03 m. high, exhibit Late Archaic - Early Classical Period features - - - - and, consequently the inscription can be dated to the Vth century B.C., Bu makale, Phaselis antik kenti ve teritoryumunda sürdürülen 2013 yılı yüzey araştırmaları sırasında tiyatronun hemen güneybatısından akropolise girişin sağlandığı alandaki kule yapısının batı duvarı önünde keşfedilen yeni bir adak yazıtını tanıtmaktadır. Kentin baş tanrıçası Athena Polias için adanan söz konusu yazıt Dor diyalektindedir ve harf karakterlerinin Geç Arkaik - Erken Klasik Dönem özellikleri göstermesi nedeniyle M.Ö. V. yy.’a tarihlendirilmiştir: “Khrysias oğlu Euphanes servetinin ondabirlik adağını Athena Polias’a dua ederek adadı .”
