Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a mixture of multiple components, which is associated with several chronic diseases, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. We evaluated the association between daily PM 2.5 and PM 2.5-10 exposure and hospital visits for respiratory diseases. Hospital visits for respiratory diseases were collected from Yinzhou Health Information System database. We used generalized additive models to examine the excess relative risk (ERR) and 95% confidence interval for hospital visits for respiratory diseases associated with each 10-μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 and PM 2.5-10 concentration. Non-linear exposure-response relationship between PM exposure and hospital visits for respiratory diseases was evaluated by a smooth spline. The ERRs for hospital visits for respiratory diseases associated with a 10-μg/m 3 increase in the 6-day cumulative average concentration of PM 2.5 and PM 2.5-10 were 5.40 (95% CI 2.32, 8.57) and 6.37% (95% CI 1.84, 11.10), respectively. The findings remained stable when we adjusted other gaseous air pollution. PM 2.5 and PM 2.5-10 were associated with the increased visits for the acute upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, asthma, and COPD. In this time-series study, we found a positive association between daily particulate matter exposure and hospital visits for respiratory diseases.

Background: Epigenetic alternation is a common contributing factor to neoplastic transformation. Although previous studies have reported a cluster of aberrant promoter methylation changes associated with silencing of tumor suppressor genes, little is known concerning their sequential DNA methylation changes during the carcinogenetic process. The aim of the present study was to address a genome-wide search for identifying potentially important methylated changes and investigate the onset and pattern of methylation changes during the progression of colorectal neoplasia., Methods: A three-phase design was employed in this study. In the screening phase, DNA methylation profile of 12 pairs of colorectal cancer (CRC) and adjacent normal tissues was analyzed by using the Illumina MethylationEPIC BeadChip. Significant CpG sites were selected based on a cross-validation analysis from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Methylation levels of candidate CpGs were assessed using pyrosequencing in the training dataset (tumor lesions and adjacent normal tissues from 46 CRCs) and the validation dataset (tumor lesions and paired normal tissues from 13 hyperplastic polyps, 129 adenomas, and 256 CRCs). A linear mixed-effects model was used to examine the incremental changes of DNA methylation during the progression of colorectal neoplasia., Results: The comparisons between normal and tumor samples in the screening phase revealed an extensive CRC-specific methylomic pattern with 174,006 (21%) methylated CpG sites, of which 22,232 (13%) were hyermethylated and 151,774 (87%) were hypomethylated. Hypermethylation mostly occurred in CpG islands with an overlap of gene promoters, while hypomethylation tended to be mapped far away from functional regions. Further cross validation analysis from TCGA dataset confirmed 265 hypermethylated promoters coupling with downregulated gene expression. Among which, hypermethylated changes in MEEPD2 promoter was successfully replicated in both training and validation phase. Significant hypermethylation appeared since precursor lesions with an extensive modification in CRCs. The linear mixed-effects modeling analysis found that a cumulative pattern of MPPED2 methylation changes from normal mucosa to hyperplastic polyp to adenoma, and to carcinoma (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that epigenetic alterations of MPPED2 promoter region appear sequentially during the colorectal neoplastic progression. It might be able to serve as a promising biomarker for early diagnosis and stage surveillance of colorectal tumorigenesis.

Urea is an important indicator of liver and kidney disease, and very frequently determined in clinical chemistry. The reference measurement procedures (RMPs) for serum urea recognized by the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine are spectrophotometry, and isotope dilution (ID)-mass spectrometry (MS) coupled with gas chromatography. This study investigated a candidate RMP (cRMP) for detecting serum urea directly via ID-liquid chromatography (LC)-MS/MS, without derivatization, which simplifies pre-processing samples. The cRMP was developed and evaluated relative to the recognized RMP, inter- and intra-laboratories. The intra-precisions were 1.35%, 1.98% and 1.47% at 4.95, 24.74 and 31.36 mmol/L, respectively; inter-precision was 2.10%, 2.60% and 2.10%. The relative bias for the measurement of standard human serum (SRM 909c) was -0.49%. The relative biases were 0.41% and 0.02% for IFCC-RELA (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine-External Quality Assessment Scheme [EQAS] for reference laboratories) 2015A and 2015B. The linearity response between 2.4 mmol/L and 53.7 mmol/L was R 2  = 0.9989. No carryover, ion suppression, or interference was detected. Correlation was acceptable with the reference spectrophotometry (R 2  = 0.9985, P <  0.0001). Between our laboratory and other reference laboratories, the absolute deviation range for IFCC-RELA 2016A and 2016B was from -0.63 to 1.52 mmol/L. Purified Brazilin from Sappan wood extract has been reported with significant antitumor effect, especially on human T24 cells and bladder cancer mouse models. Brazilin can significantly induce expression of c-Fos and GADD45β and transfection expression of c-Fos and GADD45β in T24 cells can induce significant cell morphology changes, reduced viability and cell death, while transfection of siRNA-c-Fos and siRNA-GADD45β can reverse the induced cell death. Co-transfection of both c-Fos and GADD45β into T24 cells resulted in a significantly additive effect when compared to single transfection with only c-Fos or GADD45β. Meanwhile, transfection of interfering siRNA-c-Fos or siRNA-GADD45β can partially rescue the cell viability and siRNA co-transfection showed increased rescue rate. The transfection expression and interference with pcDNA3.1-c-Fos/siRNA-c-Fos or pcDNA3.1-GADD45β/siRNA-GADD45β did not affect each other's expression. Moreover, analysis of c-Fos and GADD45β regulated genes and signal pathways showed that no common regulated genes or pathways were present. A candidate reference measurement procedure (RMP) for measurement of unconjugated estriol in human serum has been developed and validated. The proposed method is highly reliable and uses isotope dilution coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) and requires no derivatization. An appropriate amount of serum was accurately weighed and spiked with an isotopically labeled internal standard. Unconjugated estriol and its internal standard were extracted from serum matrix using liquid-liquid extraction prior to reversed-phase LC-MS/MS. Calibrator bracketing was used to give higher specificity and accuracy for assigning serum level. The accuracy of the candidate RMP was validated by split-sample comparison to established RMPs. The lowest limit of detection (LLoD) and lowest limit of quantification (LLoQ) for developed RMP was estimated to be 0.14 nmol/L and 0.35 nmol/L, respectively. Both intra- and inter-assay imprecisions were ≤2.19% at 1.39, 17.34 and 69.35 nmol/L, respectively. Recoveries were 98.54% to 100.34% and linear response ranged from 0.35 to 173.38 nmol/L. No interference was observed. Biases were 5.6% and 2.8% against the targets of RELA2015A (3.87 nmol/L) and RELA2015B (40.62 nmol/L), respectively. Moreover, the candidate RMP was successfully applied to measure level of unconjugated estriol in serum samples of pregnant women (n = 3) and compared with two immunoassays in clinical laboratory. Our developed method is simple, accurate, and can be used as a candidate RMP to determine total unconjugated estriol level in human serum. Tetracycline (TC) is one of the most widely used antibiotics with significant impacts on human health and thus it needs appropriate approaches for its removal. In the present study, we evaluated the performance and complete pathway of the TC electrochemical oxidation on a Ti/Ti 4 O 7 anode prepared by plasma spraying. Morphological data and composition analysis indicated a compact coating layer on the anode, which had the characteristic peaks of Ti 4 O 7 as active constituent. The TC electrochemical oxidation on the Ti/Ti 4 O 7 anode followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the TC removal efficiency reached 95.8% in 40 min. The influential factors on TC decay kinetics included current density, anode-cathode distance and initial TC concentration. This anode also had high durability and the TC removal efficiency was maintained over 95% after five times reuse. For the first time, we unraveled the complete pathway of the TC electrochemical oxidation using high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) and gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with mass spectrometer (MS). ·OH radicals produced from electrochemical oxidation attack the double bond, phenolic group and amine group of TC, forming a primary intermediate (m/z = 461), secondary intermediates (m/z = 432, 477 and 509) and tertiary intermediates (m/z = 480, 448 and 525). The latter were further oxidized to the key downstream intermediate (m/z = 496), followed by further downstream intermediates (m/z = 451, 412, 396, 367, 351, 298 and 253) and eventually short-chain carboxylic acids. We also evaluated the toxicity change during the electrochemical oxidation process with bioluminescent bacteria. The bioluminescence inhibition ratio peaked at 10 min (55.41%), likely owing to the high toxicity of intermediates with m/z = 461, 432 and 477 as obtained from quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. The bioluminescence inhibition ratio eventually decreased to 16.78% in 40 min due to further transformation of TC and intermediates. By comprehensively analyzing the influential factors and complete degradation pathway of TC electrochemical oxidation on the Ti/Ti 4 O 7 anode, our research provides deeper insights into the risk assessment of intermediates and their toxicity, assigning new perspectives for practical electrochemical oxidation to effectively eliminate the amount and toxicity of TC and other antibiotics in wastewater., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic nephropathy in Ningbo Yinzhou district., Methods: Nephropathy screening was conducted among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) registered in Ningbo Yinzhou district. Demographic information, clinical examination information, diabetes complications and behavioral risk factors of enrolled patients were collected. Logistic regression model was used to identify possible risk factors for the occurrence of diabetic nephropathy., Results: Among 10 604 T2DM patients included in this study, there were 3744 cases of diabetic nephropathy(35.31%). Univariate analysis showed that gender, age, education level, diabetes duration, glycemic control, hypertension, stroke, smoking and waist circumference were associated with diabetic nephropathy ( P <0.05 or P <0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that male, elders, long diabetes duration, hypertension and smoking were independent risk factors of diabetic nephropathy ( P <0.05 or P <0.01)., Conclusions: sDiabetic nephropathy is of high prevalence in T2DM patients. Male patients, elders, and those with long diabetes duration, hypertension and smoking habits are more likely to have diabetic nephropathy.

A novel IBAF system (altered conventional biological aerated filter (BAF) for intermittent aeration) was used to treat BDD anodes electrochemical oxidation gasification wastewater effluent, after which 454 pyrosequencing was applied to investigate the bacterial community of IBAF and demonstrate the relationship between dissolved oxygen (DO) and the bacterial community. The results showed that the concentration of COD, NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N reached 55.08, 7.64 and 7.76 mg/L, respectively, in IBAF effluent because of changes in the DO concentration at 30 days after system start-up. The bacterial community results revealed that the 40 cm sample had the highest bacterial diversity. The bacterial species were approximate in total samples at phylum and family level, but the relative abundance was significantly different because of change in DO concentration. Background: With the elderly population comprising an increasing large proportion of society, a valid and reliable measure of social health in the elderly is indispensable for a comprehensive health assessment. The objective of this study is to develop a Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE)., Methods: A draft scale was generated based on a literature review and expert surveys. Pilot testing was conducted from December 14, 2015, to January 8, 2016. Some items were removed after assessment with five statistical analysis methods. Field testing began on November 6, 2016, and ended on January 20, 2017. After field testing, the reliability and validity of the scale were assessed and the norms in Hangzhou were calculated., Results: In the two tests, 430 and 2404 subjects were included in the statistical analyses. The long form of the SHSE (SHSE-L) contained 25 items, 14 of which were also in the short form (SHSE-S). The internal consistency of the SHSE-L was acceptable. The test-rest reliability and inter-rater reliability were moderate, but the concurrent validity, construct validity, and convergent and discriminant validity were desirable in both versions. The standard and percentile rank norms in Hangzhou, China were developed based on the field testing data., Conclusions: The population-based social health of the Chinese elderly can be validly and reliably assessed with the SHSE.

Key Points: Shank3 increases the HCN channel surface expression in heterologous expression systems. Shank3 Δ13-16 deficiency causes significant reduction in HCN2 expression and I h current amplitude in thalamocortical (TC) neurons. Shank3 Δ13-16 - but not Shank3 Δ4-9 -deficient TC neurons share changes in basic electrical properties which are comparable to those of HCN2-/- TC neurons. HCN channelopathy may critically mediate events downstream from Shank3 deficiency., Abstract: SHANK3 is a scaffolding protein that is highly enriched in excitatory synapses. Mutations in the SHANK3 gene have been linked to neuropsychiatric disorders especially the autism spectrum disorders. SHANK3 deficiency is known to cause impairments in synaptic transmission, but its effects on basic neuronal electrical properties that are more localized to the soma and proximal dendrites remain unclear. Here we confirmed that in heterologous expression systems two different mouse Shank3 isoforms, Shank3A and Shank3C, significantly increase the surface expression of the mouse hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic-nucleotide-gated (HCN) channel. In Shank3 Δ13-16 knockout mice, which lack exons 13-16 in the Shank3 gene (both Shank3A and Shank3C are removed) and display a severe behavioural phenotype, the expression of HCN2 is reduced to an undetectable level. The thalamocortical (TC) neurons from the ventrobasal (VB) complex of Shank3 Δ13-16 mice demonstrate reduced I h current amplitude and correspondingly increased input resistance, negatively shifted resting membrane potential, and abnormal spike firing in both tonic and burst modes. Impressively, these changes closely resemble those of HCN2-/- TC neurons but not of the TC neurons from Shank3 Δ4-9 mice, which lack exons 4-9 in the Shank3 gene (Shank3C still exists) and demonstrate moderate behavioural phenotypes. Additionally, Shank3 deficiency increases the ratio of excitatory/inhibitory balance in VB neurons but has a limited impact on the electrical properties of connected thalamic reticular (RTN) neurons. Objective: To predict the incidence of lung cancer in Jiashan county from 2017 to 2019 on the basis of the incidence rates of lung cancer during 1987-2016., Methods: Lung cancer incident cases were derived from cancer registry system of Jiashan. Crude incidence, age-standardized incidence rate by the Chinese standard population (ASR China) and the world standard population (ASR world) were calculated. Annual percent change (APC) was used to examine the temporal trend, and the autoregressive integrated moving average method (ARIMA) of time series model was used to predict the incidence rates from 2017 to 2019., Results: There were 6103 lung cancer incident cases during 1987-2016 in Jiashan county. Averagely, the crude incidence rate, ASR China and ASR world were 53.77/10 5 , 25.24/10 5 and 34.15/10 5 , respectively. The crude incidence rate, ASR China and ASR world in male were 78.30/10 5 , 34.77/10 5 and 51.87/10 5 , which were higher than those in female (29.15/10 5 , 14.31/10 5 and 17.99/10 5 ). Crude incidence rate increased from 27.58/10 5 in 1987 to 111.24/10 5 in 2016, and the APC was 5.28%. Crude incidence rate predicted by ARIMA model from 2017 to 2019 would be 135.64/10 5 , 145.97/10 5 and 152.63/10 5 , and the predicted crude incidence rate for 2017 was close to the real incidence rate in 2017 (135.95/10 5 )., Conclusions: The incidence of lung cancer in Jiashan has been increased dramatically over the past 30 years and will continue to increase in the future.

Background: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been widely used in preliminary screening for colorectal cancer (CRC). The high-risk factor questionnaire (HRFQ) and quantitative risk-assessment method (QRAM) are recommended for estimating the risk of CRC qualitatively and quantitatively in China., Aim: We aimed to prospectively compare the diagnostic values of CRC preliminary screening methods to identify which method is preferable as a screening strategy., Methods: Individuals aged 40-74 years old were enrolled in a mass CRC screening program from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2014, in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province, China. FIT of two stool specimens at 1-week intervals was performed by laboratory personnel and face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained investigators. Screening data in the program were linked to a CRC surveillance and registry system, and CRC cases reported in the system were regarded as true patients., Results: A total of 96,043 subjects were included. The sensitivity and specificity of FIT for detecting CRC cases were 75.49% (95% CI 69.84-80.39) and 90.36% (95% CI 90.17-90.54), respectively. QRAM was more sensitive (p < 0.001) and less specific (p < 0.001) than HRFQ. The sensitivity and specificity of FIT along with HRFQ were 86.56% (95% CI 81.81-90.22) and 81.37% (95% CI 81.12-81.62), and those of FIT along with QRAM were 88.93% (95% CI 84.47-92.23) and 73.95% (95% CI 73.67-74.23)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CRC preliminary screening with FIT and QRAM in parallel has high sensitivity and satisfactory specificity, and is a useful strategy in mass screening programs.

It has been shown that adipose tissue hyperplasia (increased adipocyte number or adipogenesis) has beneficial effects on metabolic health. The aim of the present study was to determine whether phytol could modulate hyperplasia/adipogenesis and glucose homeostasis, and to explore the underlying mechanisms in mice fed high-fat and high fructose diet (HFFD). Our results demonstrated that phytol administration decreased body weight gain and inguinal subcutaneous white adipose tissue (iWAT) weight. However, phytol significantly increased the adipocyte number in iWAT, with the smaller average adipocyte diameter. Meanwhile, OGTT result showed that phytol improved glucose tolerance. In accord, phytol administration markedly increased expression of marker genes associated with adipogenesis (PPARγ and C/EBPα) and glucose uptake (AS160 and GLUT4) and activated PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in mice iWAT. In agreement with the in vivo findings, the in vitro results indicated that 100 μM phytol significantly enhanced 3T3-L1 adipogenesis and glucose uptake, and activated PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. However, phytol-induced enhancement of 3T3-L1 adipognesis and glucose uptake, activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, elevation of marker genes involved in adipogensis and glucose uptake, as well as translocation of GLUT4 from cytoplasm to membrane were abolished by Wortmannin, a specific PI3K/Akt inhibitor. Taken together, phytol increased adipocyte number in iWAT and improved glucose tolerance in mice fed HFFD, which was coincident with the enhanced adipogenesis and glucose uptake in 3T3-L1, and was associated with activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Estrogen measurements are important in the assessment of female reproductive function and have expanding roles in other fields. A simple, accurate, highly sensitive and specific isotope-dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and evaluated to simultaneously measure three endogenous estrogens in serum: estrone (E 1 ), 17β-estradiol (E 2 ), and estriol (E 3 ). Chromatographic separation was achieved on a C 18 column before electrospray ionization triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The sample preparation in this assay requires no derivatization and extraction by liquid-liquid extraction. After optimization of the extraction conditions, the final extraction efficiency of E 1 , E 2 , and E 3 was 83.8%, 78.9%, and 77.3% respectively. The metabolites and structural analogs that have the same molecular masses as the estrogens were separated under the optimized liquid chromatography conditions. Method validation showed satisfactory linearity over the concentration range of 20-10000 pg mL -1 for all three estrogens (r 2  > 0.997). The limits of quantification were 5, 10, and 10 pg mL -1 for E 1 , E 2 , and E 3 respectively, and their recoveries ranged from 94.7% to 103.5%. The accuracy of the proposed method was further evaluated with use of certified reference materials BCR-576, BCR-577, and BCR-578 for E 2 and 2014 International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine External Quality Assessment Scheme for Reference Laboratories in Laboratory Medicine samples for E 3 , whose certified values were determined by reference methods. Great agreement was observed between the measured values and the certified values. Satisfactory precision (coefficients of variation less than 7.44%) was also obtained for the three estrogens. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to measure the three estrogens in serum samples of pregnant women in the second trimester and to assess the accuracy of chemiluminescent immunoassays in clinical laboratories by determination of E 2 and unconjugated E 3 in serum samples. The potential ecotoxicity of three metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs) toward Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated, including titanium dioxide (TiO2), copper oxide (CuO), and zinc oxide (ZnO). The true particle sizes of NPs in medium were significantly larger than the advertised sizes. Bacterial toxicity tests showed that the three NPs were harmful to varying degrees. The toxicity of CuO toward E. coli increased with the increasing concentration of CuO. The toxicity of ZnO and TiO2 toward E. coli was highest at NP concentration of 5 and 20 mg/L, respectively, but decreased when the NP concentration was higher, which is closely related with the nanoparticle sizes. Ion toxicity further demonstrated that dissolved metal ions were also responsible for the toxicity of CuO and ZnO. These results highlight the need for caution during the use and disposal of such manufactured nanomaterials to prevent unintended environmental impacts.

The occurrence of antibiotics in the environment has recently raised serious concern regarding their potential threat to aquatic ecosystem and human health. In this study, the magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin was applied for removing three commonly-used antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TCN) and amoxicillin (AMX) from water. The results of batch experiments show that the maximum adsorption capacities on the MIEX resin for SMX, TCN and AMX were 789.32, 443.18 and 155.15μg/mL at 25°C, respectively, which were 2-7 times that for the powdered activated carbon. The adsorption kinetics of antibiotics on the MIEX resin could be simulated by the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 =0.99), and the adsorption isotherm data were well described by the Langmuir model (R 2 =0.97). Solution pH exhibited a remarkable impact on the adsorption process and the absorbed concentrations of the tested antibiotics were obtained around the neutral pH. The MIEX resin could be easily regenerated by 2mol/L NaCl solution and maintained high adsorption removal for the tested antibiotics after regeneration. Anion exchange mechanism mainly controlled the adsorption of antibiotic and the formation of hydrogen binding between the antibiotic and resin can also result in the increase of adsorption capacity. Recently, air pollution has attracted a substantial amount of attention in China, which can be influenced by a variety of factors, but the association between air pollution and human activity is not quite clear. Based on real-time online data (January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014) of air pollution and meteorology reported by official sites, and demographic, economic, and environmental reform data in a statistical yearbook, the influences of meteorological factors (temperature, relative humidity, precipitation intensity, and wind force) and human activities on PM 2.5 pollution were explored. After correlation analysis, logistic regression analysis, and a nonparametric test, weak negative correlations between temperature and PM 2.5 pollution were found. In most cases, festival and morning peak hours were protection and risk factors of PM 2.5 pollution, respectively. In addition, government actions, such as an afforestation project and increasing financial expenditure for energy saving and environmental protection, could greatly contribute to alleviating pollution of PM 2.5 . The findings could help officials formulate effective laws and regulations, and then PM 2.5 pollution related to the pattern of human activity would be ameliorated., Implications: Most of the time, festival and morning peak hours are protection and risk factors for PM 2.5 pollution, respectively. Increasing the percentage of afforestation area and financial expenditure for energy saving and environmental protection could significantly reduce PM 2.5 pollution. The findings can help officials formulate effective laws and regulations, and then PM 2.5 pollution related to the pattern of human activity, especially government action, will be ameliorated.

Pharmaceuticals have been widely detected in the aquatic environment and demonstrated to be potential risks to humans and the environment. Understanding emission pathways of pharmaceuticals is essential to the control of pharmaceutical contamination for environmental management. The present study is aimed at testing the hypothesis that non-wastewater pathway is also significant to the emission of pharmaceuticals into the environment. To this end, we compared the actual production with the amount of 12 antibiotics obtained by back calculation from sewage concentrations in Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing. The results showed that for over a half of investigated antibiotics, the emission through non-wastewater pathways accounted for approximately 30-80% of the total emission, varying with individual antibiotics. It was revealed that non-wastewater emission pathways could be of significance for pharmaceuticals emitted into the environment, of which disposed by household waste could be among the most important non-wastewater pathways., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Background: A consensus on an accurate method to measure γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity for clinical purposes has not been achieved among practicing clinical laboratories. To improve analytical trueness, we evaluated the influences of matrix effects in proficiency testing (PT) materials on the measurement of GGT activity in human serum samples., Methods: Five fresh frozen human samples (FFS1-5) and five lyophilized proficiency testing materials (Lyo1-5) were distributed to 23 participating clinical laboratories for the measurement of GGT activity. Target GGT activity values for the samples were obtained by using previously approved reference methods. The results obtained by the Beckman Coulter Unicel DxC 800 Synchron analyzer were compared to the target values assigned by two reference laboratories, and the commutability of the lyophilized materials was evaluated according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guideline EP14-A2., Results: The relative bias between the results obtained by the Beckman Coulter analyzer and the reference target values ranged from -27.2% to -18.0% for FFS1-5 and from 9.1% to 2.5% for Lyo1-5. Non-commutability of all lyophilized samples falling outside of the 95% prediction interval was observed., Conclusions: The results obtained for the lyophilized PT materials were deemed acceptable within the total allowable errors, suggesting that matrix effects may impart a false sense of confidence that clinical analytical systems are performing very well. A primary reference measurement procedure on fresh frozen serum provides a valuable method for evaluating the trueness of results measured by PT.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of percutaneous compression plate (PCCP) and hollow compression screw in the treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures., Methods: Between January 2010 and June 2014, 70 patients with displaced femoral neck fractures were randomly divided into 2 groups. After reduction, fracture was fixed with PCCP in 35 cases (group A) and with hollow compression screw in 35 cases (group B). There was no significant difference in the gender, age, cause, side and type of fractures, time from injury to operation, associated disease, pre-operative Harris score and visual analogue scale (VAS) score between 2 groups ( P >0.05). The operation time, intra-operative blood loss, fracture healing time, fracture reduction quality, time of rehabilitation and weightloading; complication, post-operative Harris score and post-operative VAS score were compared between 2 groups., Results: The incisions healed by first intention. All patients were followed up 13-34 months (mean, 23.7 months). There were significant differences in operation time, intra-operative blood loss, and fracture healing time between 2 groups ( P <0.05). There was no significant in the fracture reduction quality between 2 groups ( P >0.05). Avascular necrosis of the femoral head occurred in 2 cases of group A after operation (fracture reduction quality: grade IV); and avascular necrosis of the femoral head occurred in 4 cases of group B after operation (fracture reduction quality: grade I in 2 cases, grade Ⅱ in 1 case, grade Ⅲ in 1 case, and grade IV in 1 case), nonunion in 1 case, and screw loosening in 3 cases; and there was significant difference in the incidence of bone nonunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head between 2 groups ( χ 2 =-3.997, P =0.046). Difference was significant in fracture reduction quality in the patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head and nonunion between 2 groups ( χ 2 =1.991, P =0.047）. The time of rehabilitation and weight-loading of group A was significantly earlier than that of group B ( P <0.05); the Harris and VAS scores of group A were significantly better than those of group B at 12 months after operation ( P <0.05)., Conclusions: PCCP for treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures has better static stability and better sliding dynamic pressure effect than hollow compression screw, and it can provide earlier rehabilitation and weight-loading postoperatively and obviously decrease the incidence of bone nonunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head, but avascular necrosis of the femoral head still occur in patients with poor reduction or comminuted fracture.

Objective: To explore the association between particulate matter (PM) and daily hospital visits of coronary heart diseases in Ningbo. Methods: Daily data of hospital visits from January 2014 to June 2015 (516 days in total) were obtained from the Yinzhou Health Information System in Ningbo. Daily air pollution data for PM and meteorological data were collected from the database of Ningbo Environmental Monitoring Center and Ningbo Meteorological Bureau. Time-series analysis by quasi-Poisson generalized additive model was used to examine the association between air pollution and hospital visits for coronary heart diseases by adjustment of long-term trends, seasonal patterns and meteorological variables (temperature, humidity), and day of week. Results: An increase of an IQR of PM 2.5 accounted for 1.98% (95% CI :-0.59%-4.63%) increase of hospital visits for coronary heart diseases. The associations between PM 2.5 and hospital visits for coronary heart diseases among female and the elderly (≥75 years) were stronger ( ER =2.70%,95% CI :0.01%-5.47%; ER =3.35%, 95% CI: 0.12%-6.69%). The effects of PM 2.5~10 attenuated after adjustment for PM 2.5. Conclusion: PM 2.5 had short-term effects on daily hospital visits for coronary heart diseases in Ningbo, and such association was stronger among female and the elderly.

Background: Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of various diseases, and the establishment of relevant, reliable reference intervals (RI) is key to avoiding misdiagnoses. In 2011, IFCC published the new reference measurement procedure (RMP) for the determination of serum ALP in which one of the main modifications was the measuring temperature of the assay. Here, the new RMP was used to help establish RIs for serum ALP concentrations in healthy Chinese Han., Methods: Volunteer individuals in Guangdong province, China (n=1622) were screened by questionnaire and laboratory testing for eligibility as a reference. Blood (20 mL) was collected and samples were measured by the Roche Modular system using the new RMP for the serum ALP compatible method. Partitioning of values by gender and/or age was evaluated with a standard normal deviate test after removing outliers. A simple non-parametric method for a two-sided 95% distribution of reference values was calculated., Results: Serum ALP concentrations were obtained from the cohort of eligible reference individuals (n=658). The RI for serum ALP in males age 18-79 years was 48-131 U/L. Females were partitioned into two age groups based on statistical analysis, 18-49 years and 50-79 years, and the RIs derived were 40-106 U/L and 57-159 U/L, respectively., Conclusions: RIs for serum ALP for Chinese Han individuals in between the ages of 18 and 79 years were determined and required partitioning due to the higher ALP values of females age 50-79 years.

The relationship between physical activity (PA) before cancer diagnosis and all cancer mortality among the general population is not well defined because of inconsistent results from published studies. Thus, the lack of a meta-analysis that addresses that issue prompted the current report. We conducted a literature search of PubMed and Web of Science to identify all relevant epidemiological studies published before February 28, 2015. We performed categorical and dose-response meta-analyses to evaluate and quantify the association between pre-diagnosis PA and all cancer mortality. A total of 32 prospective cohort studies involving 59,362 cancer deaths were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled relative risks (RRs) of all cancer mortality were 0.80 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.76-0.85)] for highest versus lowest PA group and 0.85 (95% CI = 0.82-0.88) for PA versus non/occasional PA group. Dose-response analysis showed that the increment in pre-diagnosis PA level was associated with a decreased risk of cancer death continuously. Moreover, an increment of 10 MET-h/week was related to a 7% lower risk for all cancer mortality (RR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.91-0.95). In conclusion, the present meta-analysis provides evidence of an inverse association between pre-diagnosis PA and all cancer mortality among the general population. Background: The intake of fish and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may benefit cognitive function. However, optimal intake recommendations for protection are unknown., Objective: We systematically investigated associations between fish and PUFA intake and mild-to-severe cognitive impairment risk., Design: Studies that reported risk estimates for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), cognitive decline, dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), or Parkinson disease (PD) from fish, total PUFAs, total n-3 (ω-3) PUFAs, or at least one n-3 PUFA were included. Study characteristics and outcomes were extracted. The pooled RR was estimated with the use of a random-effects model meta-analysis. A dose-response analysis was conducted with the use of the 2-stage generalized least-squares trend program., Results: We included 21 studies (181,580 participants) with 4438 cases identified during follow-up periods (2.1-21 y). A 1-serving/wk increment of dietary fish was associated with lower risks of dementia (RR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.90, 0.99; P = 0.042, I(2) = 63.4%) and AD (RR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.90, 0.95; P = 0.003, I(2) = 74.8%). Pooled RRs of MCI and PD were 0.71 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.82; P = 0.733, I(2) = 0%) and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.99; P = 0.221, I(2) = 33.7%), respectively, for an 8-g/d increment of PUFA intake. As an important source of marine n-3 PUFAs, a 0.1-g/d increment of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake was associated with lower risks of dementia (RR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.76, 0.96; P < 0.001, I(2) = 92.7%) and AD (RR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.51, 0.76; P < 0.001, I(2) = 94.5%). Significant curvilinear relations between fish consumption and risk of AD and between total PUFAs and risk of MCI (both P-nonlinearity < 0.001) were observed., Conclusions: Fishery products are recommended as dietary sources and are associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment. To optimize the production conditions for exopolysaccharides with higher antioxidant activities from Xerocomus badius cultured in shrimp byproduct medium, Plackett-Burman design, path of steepest ascent, and response surface methodology were explored. Based on the results of Plackett-Burman design and path of steepest ascent, a Box-Behnken design was applied to optimization and the regression models. The optimal cultural condition for high yield and antioxidant activity of the exopolysaccharides was determined to be 10.347% of solid-to-liquid ratio, a 4.322% content of bran powder, and a 1.217% concentration of glacial acetic acid. Culturing with the optimal cultural conditions resulted in an exopolysaccharides yield of 4.588 ± 0.346 g/L and a total antioxidant activity of 2.956 ± 0.105 U/mg. These values are consistent with the values predicted by the corresponding regression models (RSD < 5%).

Background: Forecasting the disease burden of the elderly will contribute to make a comprehensive assessment about physical and mental status of the elderly in China and provide a basis for reducing the negative consequences of aging society to a minimum., Methods: This study collected data from a public database online provided by Global Burden of Disease Study 2010. Grey model GM (1, 1) was used to forecast all-cause and disease-specific rates of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2015 and 2020., Results: After cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, we found that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) were still the greatest threats in the elderly, followed by injuries. As for 136 predicted causes, more than half of NCDs increased obviously with age, less than a quarter of communicable, material, neonatal, and nutritional disorders or injuries had uptrend., Conclusions: The findings display the health condition of the Chinese elderly in the future, which will provide critical information for scientific and sociological researches on preventing and reducing the risks of aging society.

Objective: To compare the efficacy difference in the treatment of senile insomnia among western, medication, acupuncture and the integrated therapy of acupuncture and western medication., Methods: Ninety-eight patients of senile insomnia were randomized into a western medication group (30 cases), an acupuncture group (35 cases) and an integrated acupuncture and medication group (35 cases). In the western medication group, estazolam 1mg was prescribed, taken 30 min before going to bed, oryzanol 20 mg, oral administration, three times a day, for 4 weeks totally. In the acupuncture group, the simple acupuncture therapy was applied at Shenmen (HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Anmian (Extra), Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1), as well as the supplementary points selected according to the differentiation. The acupuncture treatment was given once a day, 5 treatments a week, for 4 weeks totally. In the integrated acupuncture and medication group, the western medication was combined with acupuncture. The dosage and usage of western medication were same as those in the western medication group; and acupoints in acupuncture treatment were same as those in the acupuncture group. The treatment lasted for 4 weeks in the three groups. Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and clinical efficacy were observed before treatment, after 4 weeks' treatment and in 4 weeks after discontinuity of treatment in the three groups., Results: Four weeks after treatment, the clinical curative rates were 3. 3% (1/30), 21. 2% (7/33) and 25. 7% (9/35) in the western medication group, the acupuncture group and the integrated acupuncture and medicines group separately. The total effective rates were 70. 0%(21/30), 93. 9%(31/33) and 97. 1%(34/35) in the three groups separately. The curative rates and the total effective rates in the integrated acupuncture and medication group and the acupuncture group were higher than those in the western medication group separately (all, P<0. 01). PSQI scores after 4 Weeks' treatment were all improved as compared with those before treatment in the three groups (all P<0. 05). PSQI score in either the integrated acupuncture and medication group or the acupuncture group was lower than that in the western medication group, indicating the significant difference (both P< 0. 05). Four weeks after discontinuity of treatment, the efficacy was stable in the acupuncture group and the integrated acupuncture and medication group. PSQI score did not change as compared with that in the 4th week of treatment. The score in the western medication group ran back, close to that before treatment (P>0. 05). During the treatment, a few patients had dry mouth in the western medication group. The adverse reactions were not discovered in the other two groups., Conclusion: The integrated therapy of acupuncture and medication achieves the quick efficacy on senile insomnia and rapidly relieves the symptoms, with quite high clinical curative rate and total effective rate obtained. The long-term efficacy is better than that of western medication. The integrated therapy is the first option among the three therapeutic programs.

Background: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is routinely analyzed in clinical laboratories for the comprehensive assessment of hepatic and osteal diseases. The official reference measurement procedure (RMP) of ALP was released by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) in 2011. However, most of the commercial kits still trace back to the old version (1983). There was a difference between the trace measurement procedure and the RMP. Therefore, the discrepancy among clinical systems and application of the new RMP for ALP in clinical laboratories was studied., Methods: According to the recommendation of the IFCC, the RMP for ALP (2011) was reproduced. The reference measurement system (RMS) for serum ALP and 19 clinical systems were included in the external quality assessment (EQA). The relative bias was calculated between the clinical systems' results and RMS, as well as each clinical system and the average value of all clinical systems. The qualified rates (passing score in percentage) for the 19 clinical systems were compared by using two different standards. In the comparison experiment, two clinical systems were evaluated before and after calibration by RMP. The clinical acceptability at the medical decision point was evaluated., Results: The performance of the reproduced RMP for ALP was: total imprecision was 0.33% and 0.42% at 336.9 U/L and 138.74 U/L, respectively. The accuracy was in the acceptable range. Excellent linearity was obtained for linear regression (R = 0.9998). In the EQA experiment, the relative bias of clinical systems and RMP ranged from -26.36% to 19.49%, and the majority of them had a negative value. Relative bias of clinical systems and the average value of 19 clinical systems ranged from -24.28% to 33.48%. The qualified rate for clinical systems was 53% - 89% evaluated by Standard 1 and was 95% - 100% evaluated by Standard 2. In the comparison experiment, the relative bias for the two clinical systems decreased and both of the clinical systems showed less relative bias at the medical decision points after calibration by RMP., Conclusions: There was a much higher discrepancy among clinical systems for the testing of serum ALP. Traceability and standardization would likely be improved for clinical systems by the application of RMP for ALP (2011) in clinical laboratories.

Background: Numerous studies examining the relationship between CD44 expression and prognostic impact in patients with osteosarcoma have yielded inconclusive results. The aim of this meta-analysis was carried out to investigate the relationship between CD44 expression and the survival in patients with osteosarcoma., Methods: We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the prognostic role of CD44 expression on the overall survival rate and metastasis, which compared the positive and negative expression of CD44 in patients of the available studies., Results: A detailed search was made in MEDLINE and EMBASE for relevant original articles published in English. Finally, a total of six studies with 329 osteosarcoma patients were involved to estimate the relationship between CD44 expression and metastasis of tumor and overall survival. Positive expressions of CD44 did not predict neoplasm metastasis (RR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.00-1.84, P = 0.50), and the results indicated that higher expression of CD44 could not predict poorer survival in osteosarcoma with the pooled HR of 0.55 (95% CI: 0.27-1.13, P = 0.47)., Conclusions: The findings from this present meta-analysis suggest that CD44 expression is not associated with overall survival rate and metastasis in osteosarcoma., Virtual Slides: The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1373995521295618.

The development of highly active carbon material catalysts in catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) has attracted a great deal of attention. In this study different carbon material catalysts (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers and graphite) were developed to enhance the CWAO of phenol in aqueous solution. The functionalized carbon materials exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the CWAO of phenol. After 60 min reaction, the removal of phenol was nearly 100% over the functionalized multi-walled carbon, while it was only 14% over the purified multi-walled carbon under the same reaction conditions. Carboxylic acid groups introduced on the surface of the functionalized carbon materials play an important role in the catalytic activity in CWAO. They can promote the production of free radicals, which act as strong oxidants in CWAO. Based on the analysis of the intermediates produced in the CWAO reactions, a new reaction pathway for the CWAO of phenol was proposed in this study. There are some differences between the proposed reaction pathway and that reported in the literature. First, maleic acid is transformed directly into malonic acid. Second, acetic acid is oxidized into an unknown intermediate, which is then oxidized into CO2 and H2O. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate target gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Although recent studies have indicated that miR-146a is involved in the tumorigenesis of various types of malignancies, few studies have investigated its role in colorectal cancer. In the current study, we examined the expression of miR-146a in colorectal cancer tissue and adjacent normal controls using publicly available expression profiling data. We then conducted a population-based case-control study which included 554 colorectal cancer cases and 566 matched healthy controls to assess the association of a genetic variant (rs2910164) in miR-146a with colorectal cancer susceptibility. We observed decreased expression of miR-146a in rectal cancer tissue compared with adjacent normal controls (P < 0.001). Association between miR-146a rs2910164 polymorphism and risk of colorectal cancer was detected with effect modification by alcohol drinking status (P for interaction = 0.010). Among non-alcohol drinkers, individuals with CC/CG genotype had an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with those carrying GG genotype (odds ratio (OR) = 1.63, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.07 ∼ 2.47). Our findings indicate an association between miR-146a dysregulation and colorectal cancer, and suggest that miR-146a may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis. Further large population-based prospective studies as well as mechanistic investigations are warranted to validate our findings.

Biodegradation experiments were carried out with capsaicin to evaluate its degradability. The results show that capsaicin was readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions. The values of Kow and the calculated bioconcentration factor indicate that capsaicin have a low potential for bioconcentration. The fish acute toxicity tests conducted with Brachydanio rerio show LC50 for capsaicin was 5.98 mg L(-1). The tests of alga growth inhibition conducted with Selenastrum capricornutum suggest EC50 for capsaicin was 114 mg L(-1). The calculated PNEC (Predicted No Effect Concentration) was 4.9×10(-4) mg L(-1). The average PEC (Predicted Environmental Concentration) for OECD-EU commercial harbor and marina were 3.99×10(-6) and 2.49×10(-5) mg L(-1), respectively. These indicate that the PEC was much less than the PNEC for capsaicin. The low Kp value of capsaicin suggests the data about the risk of capsaicin to sediment organisms can be waived. According to the results from the analysis of the degradation, bioaccumulation, toxicity and accumulation in sediment, it can be concluded that capsaicin used as active substance for antifouling system on ships poses relatively low risk to marine environment., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The apoB/apoA1 ratio has been reported to be associated with the metabolic syndrome (MetS), and it may be a more convenient biomarker in MetS predicting. However, whether apoB/apoA1 ratio is a better indicator of metabolic syndrome than other biomarkers and what is the optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio as an indicator of metabolic syndrome in Chinese population remain unknown. Thus, we carried out the current study to assess the predictive value of apoB/apoA1 ratio and determine the optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio for diagnosing MetS in a Chinese population., Method: We selected 1,855 subjects with MetS and 6,265 individuals without MetS based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the China Health Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2009. MetS was identified based on the diagnostic criteria of International Diabetes Federation (2005). Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the apoB/apoA1 ratio and risk of MetS, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed to test the predictive value of apoB/apoA1 ratio and calculate the appropriate cut-off value., Results: Compared with the lowest quartile of apoB/apoA1 ratio, subjects in the fourth quartile had a higher risk of MetS in both men [odds ratio (OR) = 2.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) =1.82-3.83] and women (OR = 5.18, 95% CI = 3.87-6.92) after adjustment for potential confounders. The optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio for MetS detection was 0.85 in men and 0.80 in women. Comparisons of ROC curves indicated that apoB/apoA1 ratio was better than traditional biomarkers in predicting MetS., Conclusion: Our results suggest that, apoB/apoA1 ratio has a promising predictive effectiveness in detection of MetS. An apoB/apoA1 ratio higher than 0.85 in men and 0.80 in women may be a promising and convenient marker of MetS.

Background: The People's Republic of China's population is aging rapidly, partly because of the impact of the one-child policy and improvements in the health care system. Caring for bedridden seniors can be a challenge for many families in the People's Republic of China., Objective: To identify the inequality of income among different age groups and social statuses, and evaluate the medical burden and health insurance compensation in the People's Republic of China., Methods: We measured income inequality and insurance compensation levels among bedridden patients in Zhejiang province, People's Republic of China. Factor analysis and Gini coefficients were used to evaluate degree of income inequality and insurance compensation level., Results: We found distinct regional disparities in Zhejiang province, including the aspects of income, expenses, and time. Gini coefficients of older adults with long-term care needs in urban and rural areas were 0.335 and 0.602, respectively. In all age groups, Gini coefficients increased after adjustment for medical expenditures, and the inequality persisted after insurance reimbursement was taken into consideration., Conclusion: A significant income disparity between rural and urban areas was observed. Inequality increased with age, and medical expenditure is a huge burden for older people with long-term care needs. Health insurance does not play an important role in reducing inequalities among patients who need long-term care services.

Background: Cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Cysteine, known to be involved in a myriad of immuno-modulatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-carcinogenic pathways, has not been investigated in the aetiology of oesophageal or gastric cancers. To examine the relationship between serum cysteine concentration and risk of these cancers we conducted a nested case-cohort study within the General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial in Linxian, China., Methods: 498 oesophageal squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) and 255 gastric cardia adenocarcinomas (GCAs) were matched by age and sex to 947 individuals from the wider cohort. We calculated HRs and 95% CIs using the case-cohort estimator for the Cox proportional hazards models, stratified on age and sex, with adjustment for potential confounders., Results: Higher concentrations of serum cysteine were significantly associated with a lower risk of both OSCC and GCA. For those in the highest quartile of serum cysteine, compared to those in the lowest, the multivariate HRs were 0.70 for OSCC (95% CI 0.51 to 0.98) and 0.59 for GCA (95% CI 0.38 to 0.91). These associations were dose dependent (p for trend=0.006 and 0.008, respectively). These inverse associations were not significantly modified by other risk factors, with the exception of age, where a stronger association was noted among persons in the older age strata., Conclusion: Higher serum concentrations of cysteine were associated with a significantly reduced risk of OSCC and GCA. Cysteine should be further investigated for its potential as a chemopreventive agent for upper gastrointestinal cancers.

Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis (S. Choleraesuis) usually causes systemic infections in man and needs antimicrobial treatment. Multidrug resistance (MDR) in S. Choleraesuis is thus a great concern in the treatment of systemic non-typhoid salmonellosis. A large plasmid, pSC138, was identified in 2002 from a S. Choleraesuis strain SC-B67 that was resistant to all antimicrobial agents commonly used to treat salmonellosis, including ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. Complete DNA sequence of the plasmid had been determined previously (Chiu et al., 2005). In the present study, the sequence of pSC138 was reannotated in detail and compared with several newly sequenced plasmids. Some transposable elements and drug resistance genes were further delineated. Plasmid pSC138 was 138,742 bp in length and consisted of 177 open reading frames (ORFs). While 134 of the ORFs displayed significant identity levels to other plasmid and prokaryotic sequences, the remaining 43 ORFs have not been previously reported. Mobile elements, including two integrons, seven insertion sequences and eight transposons, and a truncated prophage together encompass at least 66,781 bp (48.1%) of the plasmid genome. The sequence of pSC138 consists of three major regions: a large composite transposable region Tn6088 with a Tn21-like backbone inserted by a variety of integrons or transposable elements; a transfer/maintenance region that contains a conserved ISEcp1-mediated transposon-like element Tn6092, carrying an AmpC gene, bla(CMY-2), that confers the ceftriaxone resistance; and a Rep&#95;3 type of replication region. Another seven bacteremic strains of S. Choleraesuis that expressed the same MDR phenotype were identified during 2003-2008. The same Rep&#95;3 type replicase and the bla(CMY-2)-containing, ISEcp1-mediated transposon-like element were found in the MDR isolates, suggesting a successful preservation and dissemination of the MDR plasmid. Comparison of pSC138 with other recently published plasmids revealed a high identity level between partial sequences of pSC138 and plasmids of the same or different incompatibility groups. The large MDR region found in pSC138 may provide a niche for the future evolution of the plasmid by acquisition of relevant resistance genes through the panoply of mobile elements and illegitimate recombination events., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. China has one of the highest carrier prevalences of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the world: nearly 10% of the general population. The disease burden of HBV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is also believed to be among the world's largest, and that of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is likely to be substantial as well. However, the epidemiology and measures to control HBV and HCV infection in China remain relatively unknown outside the country. We review the epidemiology of HBV and HCV infection, the disease burden of and risk factors for HCC, and current control measures against HBV and HCV infection in China. We also discuss the relevant literature and implications for future studies of hepatitis and HCC in China.

Background: Cancer constitutes a serious burden of disease worldwide and has become the second leading cause of death in China. Alcohol consumption is causally associated with the increased risk of certain cancers. Due to the current lack of data and the imperative need to guide policymakers on issues of cancer prevention and control, we aim to estimate the role of alcohol on the cancer burden in China in 2005., Methods: We calculated the proportion of cancers attributable to alcohol use to estimate the burden of alcohol-related cancer. The population attributable fraction was calculated based on the assumption of no alcohol drinking. Data on alcohol drinking prevalence were from two large-scale national surveys of representative samples of the Chinese population. Data on relative risk were obtained from meta-analyses and large-scale studies., Results: We found that a total of 78,881 cancer deaths were attributable to alcohol drinking in China in 2005, representing 4.40% of all cancers (6.69% in men, 0.42% in women). The corresponding figure for cancer incidence was 93,596 cases (3.63% of all cancer cases). Liver cancer was the main alcohol-related cancer, contributing more than 60% of alcohol-related cancers., Conclusions: Particular attention needs to be paid to the harm of alcohol as well as its potential benefits when making public health recommendations on alcohol drinking.

Catalytic ozonation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) in aqueous solution (5mg/L) under various reactions was performed to examine the effect of catalyst dosage, catalyst particle size, ozone dosage, and gas flow rate on the mineralization of DMP. The mineralization of DMP can be achieved via ozonation and the presence of Ru/AC could greatly accelerate the mineralization rate of DMP in ozonation process. In the continuous experiment of the Ru/AC catalyzed ozonation of DMP, total organic carbon (TOC) removals were kept stable around 75% during 42 h reaction. No leaching of ruthenium was observed in the treated water samples. The treatment of natural water using Ru/AC+O(3), Ru/AC+O(2) and ozonation alone was studied. In the Ru/AC+O(3) process, TOC removals, the reductions of the haloacetic acid formation potentials (HAAFPs), and the reductions of the trihalomethane formation potentials (THMFPs) of 11 water samples were 22-44%, 39-61% and 50-65%, respectively. Ru/AC+O(3) process was much more effective than ozonation alone for TOC removal and the reduction of disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) in the treatment of natural water. It is a promising water treatment technology.

CeO2-TiO2 catalysts are prepared by coprecipitation method, and the activity and stability in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of phenol are investigated in a batch reactor and packed-bed reactor. CeO2-TiO2 mixed oxides show the higher activity than pure CeO2 and TiO2, and CeO2-TiO2 1/1 catalyst displays the highest activity in the CWAO of phenol. In a batch reactor, COD and TOC removals are about 100% and 77% after 120 min in the CWAO of phenol over CeO2-TiO2 1/1 catalyst at reaction temperature of 150 degrees C, the total pressure of 3 MPa, phenol concentration of 1000 mg/L, and catalyst dosage of 4 g/L. In a packed-bed reactor using CeO2-TiO2 1/1 particle catalyst, over 91% COD and 80% TOC removals are obtained at the reaction temperature of 140 degrees C, the air total pressure of 3.5 MPa, the phenol concentration of 1000 mg/L for 100 h continue reaction. Leaching of metal ions of CeO2-TiO2 1/1 particle catalyst is very low during the continuous reaction. CeO2-TiO2 1/1 catalyst exhibits the excellent activity and stability in the CWAO of phenol.
