International audience; Transylvanian elites. During a first phase that lasted for almost two centuries, the name of the region remained closely connected to the titles of the Transylvanian authorities, both lay and ecclesiastical. Gradually, Transylvania also gained an autonomous geographical meaning, but the major shift took place only in the mid-sixteenth century, when Wallachians actually began to consider Transylvania a political community of its own. I contend that this change of view was only indirectly triggered by the new political status of Transylvania from the 1540 onwards. Instead, I claim that the interest taken by the Ottomans in thenew principality played a major role in modifying Wallachian views on Transylvania. As a result, the Transylvanian elites’ endeavours to convey a sense of a regional identity to Wallachians were successfully accomplished only in the mid-sixteenth century.

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the importance of folk culture for tourism development and to suggest options for better evaluation and effective use of the potential of folk culture tourism in the selected region based on the results of the analysis in the region of Wallachia. In the introduction of the practical part I deal with the current supply of Wallachia. The fundamental part was quantitative marketing research in the form of a questionnaire survey. The aim of the survey was to identify the participants of tourism in terms of demographic characteristics, determine the purpose of the visit, analyse their financial expenses, and identify subjective perception of culture and assessment of infrastructure and services in the region. I designed a new product called "Wallachia hunt", which aim was to involve young people in the Wallachia culture, tourism allows participants to actively and an interesting way to travel around the region and specifically to discover its natural and cultural wealth. "Wallachia hunt" is based on the worldwide known activity called geocaching. In my work I have put together a detailed proposal for annual testing of this activity.

The paper discusses the texts of hieromonk Macarius accompanying the printed books of the Crnojevi¢ printing office, whose print he had overseen: the foreword and afterword to the Octoechos in the First Tone (1494), afterword to the Psalter with Akolouthia (1495), and also partly the afterword to the Budanovci Tetraevangelion (1548), which preserves the altered colophon of the non-extant printed Cetinje Tetraevangelion. It additionally treats the afterwords to the Wallachian printed books: the Service Book (1508), Octoechos in the First Tone (1510) and the Tetraevangelion (1512). The analysis demonstrates that the foreword to the Cetinje Octoechos could indeed have been drafted by two men, with somewhat different ortho- graphic and linguistic practices - apart from Macarius, by Durad Crnojevic himself, whose name is signed in the book, or if not him, then hy somebody from his court office (for example, Nikola Popovic from Kosijeri). The traits most typical of Macarius can be seen im the afterword to the Cetinje Psalter, which he printed personally. The analysis of diacritical marks indicates that Macarius’ accentual system possessed the new rising stresses, different from those in his working environment, which leads one to the conclusion that Macarius had arrived from Herzegovina. The epithet which is appended to him as being “of Montenegro” should be interpreted in the light of the “mount” topos, so esteemed by the monks, as an eremitic, i.e. prominent monastic habitation. The Montenegro of monk Macarius on the one hand and the Zeta of Lord Durad Crnojevic and Metropolitan Vavylas on the other hand are not synonymous. Our further analysis also demonstrated that the same educated and skilful hieromonk Macarius did pursue his later printing activity in Wallachia. In conclusion, we append two direct pieces of evidence from Chilandar monastery itself that he deceased im this sanctuary, as its archiinandrite and a member of the brethren. The evidence includes Serbian Church Slavonic colophons on two Russian Church Slavonic manuscript psalters which mention this particular Macarius. Thus we can track down his entire known career argumentedly.

Large Blue butterfly (Phengaris arion) is one of the critically endangered species in Czech Republic and Europe. Its larvae spend only a short part of the life feeding on flower buds, the rest of the stage it live inside ant nests and feeds on ant broods. I studied preferences of the solely host ant genus Myrmica in Wallachia (eastern Czech Republic), where the butterfly is still abundant. At this sites I explored nests the ants in the time of full grown larvae and pupae (unfortunately I did not find any butterfly stadium), recorded environmental characteristics of the nest vicinity and sampled workers of the ants for further determination. Except some marginal effects I did not find a clear differences in the niche of individual ant species.

The hereby article presents an analogous analysis of the patrimonial and inheritance legal status of Moldovan women, contrasted with their counterparts in the neighbouring countries, such as Lithuania, Romania, Transylvania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro. In author’s opinion, woman’s patrimony served as a warranty for her legal and social status. Officially, women could not participate in the political life of the state, yet, some of them, possessing large estates, were indeed influential. Empowered by the autonomous possession and management of their assets, women attained some economic independence in the social sphere. Characterizing the differences and similarities in the status of women regarding the laws of succession, it should be observed that too much emphasis was placed on the legal inequality of women in different countries. In consequence, a stereotype was established in historical literature. Frequently, in European countries, an inconsistency or even a contradiction between legislation and law enforcement could be observed., The hereby article presents an analogous analysis of the patrimonial and inheritance legal status of Moldovan women, contrasted with their counterparts in the neighbouring countries, such as Lithuania, Romania, Transylvania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro. The process of 1711-1821 is a different period in terms of governance of Wallachia and Moldavia. In these years, the Ottoman Empire relinquished to appoint local governors for governance of Wallachia and Moldavia and assigned as voivodes the Greek families from the Phanar working in translations of Supreme Court and navy for years. These voivodes selected from aristocratic families residing in Phanar (Fener) district of Istanbul took many important tasks in both governorship in the region they appointed and correspondences with neighbour states in terms of foreign relations of Ottoman Empire and intelligence of confidential activities of them. In this study, Phanariotes are evaluated under light of original historical sources in terms of their positions in Ottoman Empire, their interpreting activities, their appointment to Wallachia and Moldavia as voivode, their intelligence works during period of governorship for Ottoman Empire on political developments and agreements in Europe by means of their intelligencers.

- Abstract
Hans von Aachen, court artist to the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, created a series of small painting called the Allegories on the Long Turkish War. Von Aachen made the Allegories between 1604 and 1606 and Rudolf II kept them bound in a red book in his Kunstkammer. This series selects events and battles from the Long War against the Ottoman Empire, 1593-1606, to create a flattering propagandistic image of the emperor in order to strengthen his support. Rudolf’s brother, Archduke Matthias of Austria, began plotting against the emperor beginning in 1600. By 1606 he was actively usurping Rudolf’s political power. I examine von Aachen’s visual description of imperial power, the alternate history the Allegories present, and the ways they engage with Neo-Platonic theories to convey validity to viewers. In my thesis, I outline the events of the Long War in order to compare them to von Aachen’s portrayals and to understand how he restructures chronological history to convey his message about Rudolf’s rulership. I briefly analyze each painting but I focus primarily on the eighth scene, the Conquest of Székesfehérvár. Sultan Mehmed III sits opposite Rudolf II in dignified defeat in this painting. I investigate the visual treatment of the sultan through the historical interactions between the Ottoman and Holy Roman Empires and propose the political function served by depicting him as a noble enemy. I finally discuss the way von Aachen uses symbols and allegory to convey a potent message and convince the viewer of its validity. Ultimately, these works should be seen as political propaganda used to combat Rudolf’s brother Archduke Matthias’ political takeover and not as Rudolf’s fantastical escapism from his losing battle against his brother.

Relief shown pictorially. Includes decorative title cartouche. In Volume I., 3-volume atlas contains 182 maps: 55 in Volume I, 70 in Volume II and 57 in Volume III. Dimensions: Volume I = 44 x 33 cm; Volume II = 47 x 33 cm; Volume III = 48 x 34. Board covers with abbreviated spine titles: Atlante geografico universale I -- Atlante geografico universale II -- Atlante geografico universale III. Cassini was both a painter and engraver who trained in Rome under Giambattista Piranesi (1720-1778). "Piranesi taught him the strict principles of Roman and Greek architecture, albeit that both Piranesi and Cassini utilized classical images in a Baroque style and context. Cassini's preparedness to contemplate a hybrid classical format - incorporating classical architecture and figures as fashionable forms - characterized a celestial glove he engraved in 1792. Cassini produced influential atlases, maps and globes at a time of major political upheaval in Europe. Many redrawn boundaries followed in the wake of the French Revolution and Napoleon's conquest. While Britain, Spain and France were engaged in worldwide imperial conflict, Cassini's views emerged, anticipating by over fifty years the insurrections in Italy in 1831 and 1848-49, as well as Cavour's advocacy at the Congress of Paris in 1856 of an "Italian State". The survival of some of Cassini's globes in Italian schools attests to his educational contribution to the emergence of Italian nationalism, if not to the great power campaigns and treaties that led to the creation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1859-60. Cassini's globes also provide insights into the ecclesiastical politics of Rome, and to successive military occupations of the Papal Sates - occupations that led to loss of sovereignty and the Law of Guarantees of 1871, passed by an Italian Parliament to safeguard the Pope in the Vatican". - Baldwin, Robert W. A political coup has shaken the Czech Republic since Boleslav the Kind Hearted Forever was ousted as king of Wallachia, a sleepy kingdom where locals drink 110-proof plum brandy for breakfast and use a wheat-backed currency pegged to the dollar. The faux Kingdom of Wallachia is nestled in the northeast corner of the Czech Republic, 230 miles from Prague. It was founded in 1997 by the itinerant photographer Tomas Harabis, its current foreign minister, as an elaborate practical joke. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper presents tourist attractions of Romania which refer to the history of such a legendary person as Vlad the Impaler (called "Dracula"). His life and places which are linked to his life are presented and analyzed in this text. Vlad was born and grew up in Sighisoara in Transylvania (Siebenburgen) as a son of Vlad Dracul hospodar of Wallachia. The house where Dracula lived, is today converted into a restaurant "Casa Vlad Dracul." Vlad Dracul's main task was to defend Transylvania from the attacks of Turkish armies, which were very dangerous and destructive for this region. That is why in Transylvania featured so called Fortress churches, raised to protect citizens before any military threat. Today we can visit these wonderful churches, as well as the great fortified refuge castles and the town. One of the best known castles is Bran. According to the legend, it was the castle of Vlad Dracul. In fact, he had never been to Bran and this history was created by Bram Stoker - the author of the book of Vampire Dracula. Wladislaus duke of Opole ,Wallachia ,Transylvania ,Poland ,Alexandru Basarab - Abstract

Dacia, the area of southeastern Europe that was later to become part of modern Romania, was by the first century part of the Roman Empire, although it was later overrun by the Goths and other barbarian tribes that caused the Romans to abandon the Dacian colony in 271. The original inhabitants of this area north of the Danube, thought to be Romanized Dacians, were driven out of their original homeland by these invaders. Their territory was settled by Slavic tribes, Bulgars, Avars, and, at the end of the ninth century, by the Magyars (Hungarians) and other tribes from central Asia. The Daco-Romans (later Romanians) disappeared from history for nearly a millennium, then reappeared as Vlachs, although south of their original homeland, around the eleventh century.
