Premise of the Study: Current reproduction in polycarpic plants may be affected by a wide variety of factors, including carryover or "historical" effects derived from environments experienced early in life and from previous investments in organ preformation or other life functions, such as growth or reproduction. Historical effects as determinants of plant reproductive success in a specific season have received considerably less attention than events during the current reproductive episode, especially for short-lived plants. •, Methods: We used structural equation modeling to assess direct and indirect relations between past reproduction and both subsequent reproduction and growth in Helianthemum squamatum, a short-lived polycarpic plant. Additionally, we explored the effects of current reproduction on future survival (binomial variable) by using logistic regression. •, Key Results: Historical effects derived from previous growth positively affected current reproduction, suggesting the existence of a reproductive hierarchy in the population, in which some individuals are consistently better growers and seeders. The lack of effects of current reproduction on future reproduction, together with the existence of a negative effect on future survival, suggests that to invest maximally in reproduction at the expense of a short life span may be the optimal strategy for H. squamatum, a species inhabiting very unpredictable ecosystems. •, Conclusions: Historical effects derived from past investments in growth or reproduction may have important consequences for current plant performance and may play an essential role in shaping life histories.

In the modeling of complex biological systems, and especially in the framework of the description of metabolic pathways, the use of power-law models (such as S-systems and GMA systems) often provides a remarkable accuracy over several orders of magnitude in concentrations, an unusually broad range not fully understood at present. In order to provide additional insight in this sense, this article is devoted to the renormalization group analysis of reactions in fractal or self-similar media. In particular, the renormalization group methodology is applied to the investigation of how rate-laws describing such reactions are transformed when the geometric scale is changed. The precise purpose of such analysis is to investigate whether or not power-law rate-laws present some remarkable features accounting for the successes of power-law modeling. As we shall see, according to the renormalization group point of view the answer is positive, as far as power-laws are the critical solutions of the renormalization group transformation, namely power-law rate-laws are the renormalization group invariant solutions. Moreover, it is shown that these results also imply invariance under the group of concentration scalings, thus accounting for the reported power-law model accuracy over several orders of magnitude in metabolite concentrations., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Fifty-six pharmaceuticals of various chemical groups, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and cardiovascular drugs, were detected in four selected river waters receiving sewage effluents in the Community of Madrid (Spain). A promising approach for the degradation of those residues is the application of a photo-Fenton treatment. Several new bioassays using fern spores were employed for the evaluation of acute and chronic toxicity based on mitochondrial activity, DNA and chlorophyll quantifications of as-received river water and photo-Fenton-treated samples. photo-Fenton treatment provided a high degree of total organic carbon mineralization with up to 70% reduction for river water samples. In addition, the elimination of most of the studied pharmaceutical compounds was confirmed. A few compounds, however (salicylic acid, ofloxacin, caffeine, cotinine and nicotine), seemed more resistant, with after-treatment concentrations between 4 and 44ngL(-1). Nicotine showed the most refractory behaviour with concentrations ranging from 29 to 224ngL(-1) for treated samples. Photo-Fenton treatment yielded a significant decrease in acute and chronic toxicity, even though some residual toxicity remained after treatment. This fact seemed to be related to the presence of toxicants in the water matrix, probably of inorganic nature, rather than the toxic effect of the studied pharmaceutical compounds, as revealed by the effective removal of these compounds and high TOC mineralization of photo-Fenton treatments.

Changes in forested landscapes may have important consequences for ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation. In northern Spain, major changes in land use occurred during the second half of the 20th century, but their impacts on forests have not been quantified. We evaluated the dynamics of landscape and forest distribution patterns between 1957 and 2003 in Fragas do Eume Natural Park (northwestern Spain). We used orthoimages and a set of standard landscape metrics to determine transitions between land cover classes and to examine forest distribution patterns. Eucalypt plantations showed the greatest increase in area (197%) over time. Furthermore, transitions to eucalypt plantations were found in all major land cover classes. Forest showed a net decline of 20% in total area and represented 30% of the landscape area in 2003. Forest losses were mainly due to eucalypt plantations and the building of a water reservoir, while forest gains were due to increases in shrubland, meadows and cultivated fields which had been recolonised. Forest patch size and core area decreased, and edge length increased over time. In turn, increases were obtained in mean distance between forest patches, and in adjacency to eucalypt plantations and to a water reservoir. These results suggest an increase in forest fragmentation from 1957 to 2003, as well as a change in the nature of the habitat surrounding forest patches. This study shows that land use changes, mostly from eucalypt plantation intensification, negatively affected forested habitats, although some regeneration was ongoing through ecological succession from land abandonment., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The current classification of what used to be called Catapyrenium comprises eight genera belonging to distinct lineages in the Verrucariaceae. Previous phylogenetic studies have shown that the redefined genus Catapyrenium (Catapyrenium s. str.) is monophyletic and sister of Placidiopsis within the Staurothele group, but this relationship was based on only two species from each genus. We conducted a phylogenetic study of Catapyrenium and Placidiopsis as currently delimited to evaluate the monophyly of each genus and infer infrageneric relationships. An initial family level phylogenetic analysis based on the nuLSU locus and implementing a backbone constraint tree (with both weighted maximum parsimony and bootstrap maximum likelihood approaches) was performed to infer phylogenetic placements of Catapyrenium and Placidiopsis taxa not included in previous molecular systematic studies. The results of this analysis were used to define the ingroup for a second phylogenetic analysis based on nuITS and nuLSU and centered on Catapyrenium s. str. and Placidiopsis. Placidiopsis was found to be monophyletic, whereas Catapyrenium s. str. was not. Catapyrenium dactylinum was found to be closely related to Placopyrenium caeruleopulvinum and Placopyrenium stanfordii, all of which were closely related to Placocarpus schaereri and Verrucula. In addition we found genus Placopyrenium to be polyphyletic. The resulting trees confirmed that Catapyrenium s. str. (excluding C. dactylinum) and Placidiopsis constitute two sister monophyletic entities. The data do not support Placidiopsis cinerascens and P. tenella as two distinct species because no characters can be used to distinguish them. Thus P. tenella is here reduced to synonymy with P. cinerascens.

This study reports the analogies and differences found when comparing TiO(2) photocatalytic treatment for chemical oxidation and microorganisms inactivation, using methylene blue and Escherichia coli as references, respectively. In both processes the activation is based on the same physicochemical phenomena and consequently a good correlation between them is observed when analyzing the effect of operational variables such as catalyst concentration or incident radiation flux, both factors influencing common stages such radiation absorption and generation of reactive oxygen species. However, different microbiological aspects (osmotic stress, repairing mechanism, regrowth, bacterial adhesion to the titania surface, etc) makes disinfection kinetics significantly more complex than the first-order profiles usually observed for the oxidation of chemical pollutants. Moreover, bacterial inactivation reactions are found to be extremely sensitive to the composition of water and modifications of the catalysts in comparison with the decolorization of the dye solutions, showing opposite behaviors to the presence of chlorides, incorporation of silver to the catalysts or the use of different types of immobilized TiO(2) systems. Therefore, the activity observed for the photocatalytic oxidation of organics can not be always extrapolated to photocatalytic disinfection processes., ((c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Photocatalytic inactivation of Enterococcus faecalis using TiO(2) suspensions was investigated and compared to the inactivation of the most commonly used faecal indicator strain Escherichia coli. In contrast to the inactivation in pure deionized water, disinfection of effluents from the biological process of an urban wastewater plant showed a longer initial lag phase and higher survival fractions after several hours of irradiation. Moreover, the fluctuation of the composition of the effluents strongly affects the overall inactivation rate, not directly related to changes in the values of organic matter content. Additionally, it was found that E. faecalis seems to be more resistant than E.coli towards the photocatalytic treatment. These results could be related to the differences in the cell wall structure of both microorganisms. The main conclusion of this work is that attention must be paid when transferring results obtained for model organism to real bacteria consortia and from laboratory experiments with deionized water to effluents from sewage plants.

To shed light on how biological and technological systems can establish or maintain a synchronous functioning, we address the problem of how to engineer an external pinning action on a network of dynamical units. In particular, we study the regulation of a network toward a synchronized behavior by means of a bidirectional interaction with an external node that leaves unchanged its inner parameters and architecture. We demonstrate that there are two classes of networks susceptible of being regulated into a synchronous motion and provide a simple method, for each one of them, to properly design a pinning sequence to achieve regulation. We also discuss how the obtained sequence can be compared with a topological ranking of the network nodes.

We report 13 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci for Neochamaelea pulverulenta (Cneoraceae) using an enriched-library approach. Although this plant species is tetraploid, expected patterns for tetrasomic segregation were completely absent, and all loci analysed showed a diploid pattern of inheritance. We detected a total of 102 alleles in 57 individuals genotyped (mean number of alleles per locus was 7.85). The values of observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.193 to 0.737 and 0.425 to 0.812 respectively. Disomic segregation, levels of polymorphism and the exclusionary power of the developed markers render them readily applicable for parentage assignment of dispersed seeds, and for analyses of spatial genetic structure and population connectivity., (© 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

Epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated using two kinds of nanofiller, amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and non-treated long carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The non-cured mixtures were analysed through viscosity measurements. The effect of the nanoreinforcement on the curing process was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Finally, the characterisation of cured nanocomposites was carried out studying their thermo-mechanical and electrical behaviour. At room temperature, the addition of CNTs causes a viscosity increase of epoxy monomer much more marked than the introduction of CNFs due to their higher specific area. It was probed that in that case exists chemical reaction between amino-functionalized CNTs and the oxirane rings of epoxy monomer. The presence of nanoreinforcement induces a decrease of curing reaction rate and modifies the epoxy conversion reached. The glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites decreases with the contents of CNTs and CNFs added, which could be related to plasticization phenomena of the nanoreinforcements. The storage modulus of epoxy resin significantly increases with the addition of CNTs and CNFs. This augment is higher with amino-functionalized CNTs due, between other reasons, to the stronger interaction with the epoxy matrix. The electrical conductivity is greatly increased with the addition of CNTs and CNFs. In fact, the percolation threshold is lower than 0.25 wt% due to the high aspect ratio of the used nanoreinforcements.

Frequency-dependent processes are relevant for flowering plant reproduction, especially for species with disassortative mating. In an individual-based study, we tested not only the effects of local density on reproductive success at small spatial scales, but also those of neighborhood quality. To test the neighborhood effects on the reproduction of Armeria caespitosa, a dimorphic Mediterranean high-mountain endemic, we introduce a novel pollination context (PC) index that considered the distance, floral display, and floral morph of neighbors at small scales (within 2 m from the focal plant), studying rock and pasture populations at both edges of the species altitudinal distribution. Reproductive success depended significantly on PC only at the low populations, suggesting that the PC effects are population-dependent and supporting the hypothesis that the neighborhood quality influences the reproductive success of A. caespitosa at least in stressful conditions. Moreover, fruit set was morph-dependent in the high-pasture population. The specific role of the spatial structure of compatible vs. incompatible morphs at small scales of the dimorphic self-incompatibility system in Armeria deserves further attention. Parameters other than plant density are useful for the study of small-scale density-dependent processes that affect pollination and other reproductive components, especially if they integrate neighborhood quality information at adequate spatial scales.

We propose a new approach for synchronizing a population of synthetic genetic oscillators, which consists in the entrainment of a colony of repressilators by external modulation. We present a model where the repressilator dynamics is affected by periodic changes in temperature. We introduce an additional plasmid in the bacteria in order to correlate the temperature variations with the enhancement of the transcription rate of a certain gene. This can be done by introducing a promoter that is related to the heat shock response. This way, the expression of that gene results in a protein that enhances the overall oscillations. Numerical results show coherent oscillations of the population for a certain range of the external frequency, which is in turn related to the natural oscillation frequency of the modified repressilator. Finally we study the transient times related with the loss of synchronization and we discuss possible applications in biotechnology of large-scale production coupled to synchronization events induced by heat shock.

Submicron particles of mesoporous MSU-2 silica have been obtained by using Tergitol NP-9 as nonionic surfactant and TEOS as silica precursor. The material has been chemically modified with 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, SEM, N2 adsorption, FT-IR spectroscopy, 29Si-NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis. The enviromental application of such material (denoted MTTZ-MSU-2b) in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated waters has been demonstrated. The maximum adsorption capacity of this material was found to be 0.73 +/- 0.01 mmol/g for Pb(II) and 0.94 +/- 0.01 mmol/g for Zn(II), and is higher than the capacity of most of the other functionalized mesoporous materials previously reported. The very high access of these metal ions to the binding sites in the adsorbent has also been demonstrated (adsorption efficiency equal to 0.88 and 1.13 for Pb(II) and Zn(II), respectively).

A SBA-15 mesoporous silica has been chemically modified with 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole. The newly synthesized material (MTTZ-SBA-15) has been characterized, by powder X-ray diffraction, N(2) adsorption, FT-IR, (13)C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and used to preconcentrate Zn(II) in water samples. The effect of some variables on the adsorption capacity has been studied using the column techniques. The adsorption capacity of the prepared material followed the order: Zn>>Cu>Cd>>Mn, and under optimized conditions the maximum adsorption value for Zn(II) was 0.96+/-0.01 mmol/g with the adsorption efficiency of 0.76. In column experiments, adsorption was quantitative for 1000 mL of 7.65 x 10(-4)mM of Zn(II) solution and adsorbed ions were eluted out by 5 mL of 1M HCl (preconcentration factor of 200). Spiked tap water and mineral water were used for the preconcentration and determination of Zn(II) by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), and a 102+/-2 and 98+/-3% recoveries were obtained. The LOD and LOQ values of the proposed method were found to be 8.0 x 10(-6) and 1.23 x 10(-5)mM, respectively. The relative standard deviation for four preconcentration experiments was found to be

Recent work has shown that certain plants can identify their kin in competitive settings through root recognition, and react by decreasing root growth when competing with relatives. Although this may be a necessary step in kin selection, no clear associated improvement in individual or group fitness has been reported to qualify as such. We designed an experiment to address whether genetic relatedness between neighbouring plants affects individual or group fitness in artificial populations. Seeds of Lupinus angustifolius were sown in groups of siblings, groups of different genotypes from the same population and groups of genotypes from different populations. Both plants surrounded by siblings and by genotypes from the same population had lower individual fitness and produced fewer flowers and less vegetative biomass as a group. We conclude that genetic relatedness entails decreased individual and group fitness in L. angustifolius. This, together with earlier work, precludes the generalization that kin recognition may act as a widespread, major microevolutionary mechanism in plants.

This paper deals with the nonlinear propagation of ultrasonic waves in mixtures of air bubbles in water, but for which the bubble distribution is nonhomogeneous. The problem is modelled by means of a set of differential equations which describes the coupling of the acoustic field and bubbles vibration, and solved in the time domain via the use and adaptation of the SNOW-BL code. The attenuation and nonlinear effects are assumed to be due to the bubbles exclusively. The nonhomogeneity of the bubble distribution is introduced by the presence of bubble layers (or clouds) which can act as acoustic screens, and alters the behaviour of the ultrasonic waves. The effect of the spatial distribution of bubbles on the nonlinearity of the acoustic field is analyzed. Depending on the bubble density, dimension, shape, and position of the layers, its effects on the acoustic field change. Effects such as shielding and resonance of the bubbly layers are especially studied. The numerical experiments are carried out in two configurations: linear and nonlinear, i.e. for low and high excitation pressure amplitude, respectively, and the features of the phenomenon are compared. The parameters of the medium are chosen such as to reproduce air bubbly water involved in the stable cavitation process.

Background and Aims: Variation in fitness depends on corresponding variation in multiple traits which have both genetically controlled and plastic components. These traits are subjected to varying degrees of local adaptation in specific populations and, consequently, are genetically controlled to different extents. In this study it is hypothesized that modulation of different traits would have contrasting relevance for the fitness of populations of diverse origins. Specifically, assuming that environmental pressures vary across a latitudinal gradient, it is suggested that inherited variation in traits differentially determines fitness in annual Lupinus angustifolius populations from contrasting latitudinal origins in western Spain., Methods: Seeds of L. angustifolius from three contrasting origins were grown in a common garden. Traits related to more plastic vegetative growth and more genetically conserved phenology were measured, together with estimates of reproductive success. Fitness was estimated by the number of viable seeds per plant. Structural Equation Models were used to infer causal relationships among multiple traits and fitness, separating the direct and indirect effects of morphological, phenological and reproductive traits., Key Results: Phenological, vegetative and reproductive traits accounted for most of the fitness variation. Fitness was highest in plants of southernmost origin, mainly due to earlier flowering. Fitness within each seed origin was controlled by variation in different traits. Southern origin plants that grew to a larger size achieved higher fitness. However, plant size in plants of northernmost origin was irrelevant, but early flowering promoted higher fitness. Variation in fruit and seed set had a greater effect on the fitness of plants of central origin than phenological and size variation., Conclusions: It is concluded that modulation of a functional trait can be relevant to fitness in a given population (i.e. affecting intensity and direction), but irrelevant in other populations. This points to the need to consider integrated phenotypes when trying to unravel local adaptation effects over single traits.

We propose a Monte Carlo methodology for the joint estimation of unobserved dynamic variables and unknown static parameters in chaotic systems. The technique is sequential, i.e., it updates the variable and parameter estimates recursively as new observations become available, and, hence, suitable for online implementation. We demonstrate the validity of the method by way of two examples. In the first one, we tackle the estimation of all the dynamic variables and one unknown parameter of a five-dimensional nonlinear model using a time series of scalar observations experimentally collected from a chaotic CO2 laser. In the second example, we address the estimation of the two dynamic variables and the phase parameter of a numerical model commonly employed to represent the dynamics of optoelectronic feedback loops designed for chaotic communications over fiber-optic links.

According to life-history theory, reproductive investments involve costs in terms of growth, future fecundity, and/or survival. However, studies to date have often failed to detect costs of reproduction, with survival costs among the less documented. We investigated the cost of reproduction in Helianthemum squamatum (Cistaceae), a short-lived perennial of semiarid Mediterranean environments. After experimental flower removal, we evaluated next season's growth, reproduction, and survival of the plants. We also monitored an indicator of plant physiological status (F(v)/F(m)) and leaf nutrient concentration at key phenological stages during reproduction. Survival rate in deblossomed plants was significantly higher than in control plants. As far as we know, this is the first experimental evidence of a survival cost of reproduction in a perennial plant. In contrast, no cost to growth or reproduction was found during the next season, and no significant differences in F(v)/F(m) or leaf nutrients were found between control and deblossomed plants. Helianthemum squamatum's success in semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems seems to rely on a persistent seed bank, combined with a sustained high reproductive output at the expense of survival. We conclude that this strategy might be more common than previously thought among short-lived shrubby plants growing in stressful Mediterranean areas.

We show that the topology and dynamics of a network of unsynchronized Kuramoto oscillators can be simultaneously controlled by means of a forcing mechanism which yields a phase locking of the oscillators to that of an external pacemaker in connection with the reshaping of the network's degree distribution. The entrainment mechanism is based on the addition, at regular time intervals, of unidirectional links from oscillators that follow the dynamics of a pacemaker to oscillators in the pristine graph whose phases hold a prescribed phase relationship. Such a dynamically based rule in the attachment process leads to the emergence of a power-law shape in the final degree distribution of the graph whenever the network is entrained to the dynamics of the pacemaker. We show that the arousal of a scale-free distribution in connection with the success of the entrainment process is a robust feature, characterizing different networks' initial configurations and parameters.

When noise is present in a scattering system, particles tend to escape faster from the scattering region as compared with the noiseless case. For chaotic scattering, noise can render particle-decay exponential, and the decay rate typically increases with the noise intensity. We uncover a scaling law between the exponential decay rate and the noise intensity. The finding is substantiated by a heuristic argument and numerical results from both discrete-time and continuous-time models.

A new synthesis route, based on the silanization of zeolitic seeds, has been applied to prepare nanocrystalline TS-1 zeolite with hierarchical porosity, leading to materials exhibiting high catalytic activity in 1-octene epoxidation with organic hydroperoxides as oxidizing agents.

In this paper we make a thorough exploration of the technique of partial control of chaotic systems. This control technique allows one to keep the trajectories of a dynamical system close to a chaotic saddle even if the control applied is smaller than the effects of environmental noise in the system, provided that the chaotic saddle is due to the existence of a horseshoelike mapping in phase space. We state this here in a mathematically precise way using the Conley-Moser conditions, and we prove that they imply that our partial control strategy can be applied. We also give an upper bound of the control-noise ratio needed to achieve this goal, and we describe how this technique can be applied for large noise values. Finally, we study in detail the effect of imperfect targeting in our control technique. All these results are illustrated numerically with the paradigmatic Hénon map.

The authors of this paper wish to draw attention to certain not-so-well-known aspects concerning the epithet "Knight of the Woeful Countenance", by which Cervantes' character Don Quixote is universally known. Cervantes used it to highlight the loss of his hero's molars and incisors; thus, the reduced vertical dimension of his face, along with his sagging cheeks and deepened facial furrows, was the reason for his permanently sorrowful countenance. Luis Martínez, a professional illustrator following instructions from the authors of this paper, has recreated the face of Don Quixote as Miguel de Cervantes may well have imagined it for his celebrated character.

By using finite Lyapunov exponent distributions, we get insight into both the local and global properties of a dynamical flow, including its nonhyperbolic behavior. Several distributions of finite Lyapunov exponents have been computed in two prototypical four-dimensional phase-space Hamiltonian systems. They have been computed calculating the growth rates of a set of orthogonal axes arbitrarily pointed at given intervals. We analyze how such distributions serve or not for tracing the orbit nature and local flow properties such as the unstable dimension variability, as the axes are allowed or not to tend to the largest stretching direction. The relationship between the largest and closest to zero exponent distribution is analyzed. It shows a linear dependency at short intervals, related to the number of degrees of freedom of the system. Finally, the hyperbolicity indexes, associated to the shadowing times, are calculated. They provide interesting information at very local scales, even when there are no Gaussian distributions and the values cannot be regarded as random variables.

Background and Aims: Plant species typical of cold and warm habitats differ in a suite of morpho-physio-phenological traits, although their evolutionary routes have been poorly explored. Here, it is advocated that traits typical of different climate regimes can be largely driven by contrasting branch architectures. This is explored within Saxifraga. First, an investigation was carried out to determine whether series Ceratophyllae (lateral inflorescences) is segregated to lowlands compared with Pentadactylis (terminal inflorescences). Then, two altitudinal vicariants, S. trifurcata (lowland, with lateral inflorescences) and S. canaliculata (highland, with apical inflorescences), were selected. It was hypothesized that apical flowering of S. canaliculata constrains its growth period, bringing with it traits typical of short growth season plants, and conversely for S. trifurcata., Methods: The hypothesis was tested by measuring plant compactness and organ pre-formation in seven populations of these species along an altitude gradient., Key Results: Most variables differed among species. Morphological variables at all scales support that the architecture of S. canaliculata generates a more compact habit. A higher number of primordia and earlier inflorescence pre-formation in S. canaliculata indicate that it begins organogenesis earlier. Data on organogenesis suggest that the different timing of inflorescence initiation may be the origin of the contrasting architectures. Within species, shoot compactness increased, and the length of lateral primordia decreased, as altitude increased. All other metrics were similar among locations of the same species at contrasting altitudes., Conclusions: The hypotheses linking elevational segregation of species, architecture and pheno-morphological traits were validated at broad (gen. Saxifraga) and local (altitudinal vicariants) scales. This supports the initial idea that shoot architecture may to a large extent condition high altitude adaptive syndrome.

Theories based on competition for resources predict a monotonic negative relationship between population density and individual biomass in plant populations. They do not consider the role of facilitative interactions, which are known to be important in high stress environments. Using an individual-based 'zone-of-influence' model, we investigated the hypothesis that the balance between facilitative and competitive interactions determines biomass-density relationships. We tested model predictions with a field experiment on the clonal grass Elymus nutans in an alpine meadow. In the model, the relationship between mean individual biomass and density shifted from monotonic to humped as abiotic stress increased. The model results were supported by the field experiment, in which the greatest individual and population biomass were found at intermediate densities in a high-stress alpine habitat. Our results show that facilitation can affect biomass-density relationships.

The aims of this study were to test the face, content, and construct validities of a virtual-reality haptic arthroscopy simulator and to validate four assessment hypothesis. The participants in our study were 94 arthroscopists attending an international conference on arthroscopy. The interviewed surgeons had been performing arthroscopies for a mean of 8.71 years (σ = 6.94 years). We explained the operation, functionality, instructions for use, and the exercises provided by the simulator. They performed a trial exercise and then an exercise in which performance was recorded. After having using it, the arthroscopists answered a questionnaire. The simulator was classified as one of the best training methods (over phantoms), and obtained a mark of 7.10 out of 10 as an evaluation tool. The simulator was considered more useful for inexperienced surgeons than for surgeons with experience (mean difference 1.88 out of 10, P value < 0.001). The participants valued the simulator at 8.24 as a tool for learning skills, its fidelity at 7.41, the quality of the platform at 7.54, and the content of the exercises at 7.09. It obtained a global score of 7.82. Of the subjects, 30.8% said they would practise with the simulator more than 6 h per week. Of the surgeons, 89.4% affirmed that they would recommend the simulator to their colleagues. The data gathered support the first three hypotheses, as well as face and content validities. Results show statistically significant differences between experts and novices, thus supporting the construct validity, but studies with a larger sample must be carried out to verify this. We propose concrete solutions and an equation to calculate economy of movement. Analogously, we analyze competence measurements and propose an equation to provide a single measurement that contains them all and that, according to the surgeons' criteria, is as reliable as the judgment of experts observing the performance of an apprentice.

In this paper we study how to avoid escapes in open dynamical systems in the presence of dissipation and forcing, as it occurs in realistic physical situations. We use as a prototype model the Helmholtz oscillator, which is the simplest nonlinear oscillator with escapes. For some parameter values, this oscillator presents a critical value of the forcing for which all particles escape from its single well. By using the phase control technique, weakly changing the shape of the potential via a periodic perturbation of suitable phase varphi , we avoid the escapes in different regions of the phase space. We provide numerical evidence, heuristic arguments, and an experimental implementation in an electronic circuit of this phenomenon. Finally, we expect that this method might be useful for avoiding escapes in more complicated physical situations.

Habitat fragmentation is a major cause of species rarity and decline because it increases local population extinctions and reduces recolonisation rates of remnant patches. Although two major patch characteristics (area and connectivity) have been used to predict distribution patterns in fragmented landscapes, other factors can affect the occurrence of a species as well as the probability of it becoming extinct. In this paper, we study the spatial structure and dynamics of the butterfly Iolana iolas in a 75-patch network of its host plant (Colutea hispanica) to determine the relative importance of patch area, connectivity and habitat quality characteristics on occupancy, extinction and density over the period 2003-2006. Occupancy in 2003, incidence (proportion of years occupied) and probability of extinction were mostly affected by patch area. Smaller patches were less likely to be occupied because they had a higher probability of extinction, partly due to environmental stochasticity. The density of I. iolas was negatively related to patch area in all study years. Only in 2004 was the density of I. iolas positively influenced by fruit production per plant. Our results suggest that for I. iolas, and probably for other specialist butterflies with clearly delimited resource requirements, metapopulation dynamics can be satisfactorily predicted using only geometric variables because most habitat characteristics are subsumed in patch area. However, this hypothesis should be subject to further testing under diverse environmental conditions to evaluate the extent of its generalisation.

In a region in phase space where there is a chaotic saddle, all initial conditions will escape from it after a transient with the exception of a set of points of zero Lebesgue measure. The action of an external noise makes all trajectories escape faster. Attempting to avoid those escapes by applying a control smaller than noise seems to be an impossible task. Here we show, however, that this goal is indeed possible, based on a geometrical property found typically in this situation: the existence of a horseshoe. The horseshoe implies that there exist what we call safe sets, which assures that there is a general strategy that allows one to keep trajectories inside that region with control smaller than noise. We call this type of control partial control of chaos.

A system consisting of two map-based neurons coupled through reciprocal excitatory or inhibitory chemical synapses is discussed. After a brief explanation of the basic mechanism behind generation and synchronization of bursts, parameter space is explored to determine less obvious but biologically meaningful regimes and effects. Among them, we show how excitatory synapses without any delays may induce antiphase synchronization; that a synapse may change its character from excitatory to inhibitory and vice versa by changing its conductance, without any change in reversal potential; and that small variations in the synaptic threshold may result in drastic changes in the synchronization of spikes within bursts. Finally we show how the synchronization effects found in the two-neuron system carry over to larger networks.

Light has been identified as one of the main factors affecting seaweed ecophysiology. We investigated the dependence of nutrient metabolism on sun and shade light conditions and whether episodes of upwelling of nutrient-rich subsuperficial water could reduce the summer nutrient limitation driving physiological changes in Palmaria palmata (L.) Kuntze. We measured the major nutrient pools, photosynthetic pigments, and light curves, under sun and shade conditions during a summer period when one upwelling was recorded. The redundancy analysis (RDA) produced two clear groups: sun- and shade-acclimated algae. Light was the major predictive factor. Sun-acclimated algae exhibited higher carbon (C) and lower nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content in association with the storage of floridoside (main C reserve) to benefit from higher irradiance (under nutrient limitation). Among N pools, N reserves (phycoerythrin, nitrate) were a lower proportion of the total N in sun-acclimated algae, suggesting their degradation to fulfill the N demands of the cell. The orthophosphate content was also lower in sun-acclimated algae, indicating its utilization as a nutrient reserve. In contrast, N within cell walls and membranes and chl a contributed to a similar proportion of the total N in sun- and shade-acclimated algae, suggesting a response to sustain cell integrity. Transient high nutrient concentration due to the upwelling was unrelated to the nutrient content of the thallus. The storage of C as floridoside from high light exposure was shown to be the driving force for the metabolic adjustment of P. palmata at the end of summer before the onset of dormancy., (© 2008 Phycological Society of America.)

This study assesses how different phases of shoot growth underlie seasonal change in leaf and stem dry matter content (LDMC and SDMC, respectively) of 12 woody Mediterranean species. The relationship between LDMC and nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations is also explored and the seasonal vs interspecies variability of LDMC compared. LDMC, SDMC and shoot elongation rate (SER) were measured on a monthly basis for a minimum of 12 months. Bud growth rate (BGR) and NSC concentrations were also assessed in several of the study species. LDMC and SDMC decreased during shoot elongation in spring and increased in summer, showing a significant negative correlation with SER, but were unrelated to BGR. Half of the species analysed showed a positive relationship between LDMC and NSC. Seasonal fluctuations of LDMC within species were higher than interspecies differences, and species ranking was significantly affected by the month of sampling, except during winter months. Seasonal changes in LDMC and SDMC are mainly related to shoot elongation phenology, and NSC sink-source relationships between old and growing organs can explain this relationship in some species. Owing to the high seasonal variability in LDMC, it is recommended that samples for comparative purposes should be collected as close to the winter as possible.

A mesoporous silica (MCM-41) has been chemically modified with 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole using the homogeneous route. This synthetic route involved the reaction of 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane prior to immobilization on the support. The resulting material (MTTZ-MCM-41) has been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen gas sorption, FT-IR and MAS NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis. The solid was employed as a Zn(II) adsorbent from aqueous solutions at room temperature. The effect of several variables (stirring time, pH, metal concentration, addition of ethanol, presence of other metals in the medium) has been studied using batch and column techniques. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry was used to determine the Zn(II) concentration in the filtrate or in the eluted solution after the adsorption process. Results obtained indicate that under the optimum conditions (pH 8 and 2 h stirring time), the maximum adsorption value for Zn(II) was 1.59+/-0.01 mmol/g, whereas the adsorption capacity of the unmodified mesoporous silica was about 0.010+/-0.001 mmol/g. On the other hand, the Zn(II) adsorption on the MTTZ-MCM-41 was independent of the presence of ethanol and other metals (Cu(II), Mn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II)) in the medium. Finally, experiments carried out in order to study the regeneration capacity of the MTTZ-MCM-41 revealed that the adsorption capacity of this material was maintained after 3 cycles of the adsorption/desorption process.

The effect of weak dissipation on chaotic scattering is relevant to situations of physical interest. We investigate how the fractal dimension of the set of singularities in a scattering function varies as the system becomes progressively more dissipative. A crossover phenomenon is uncovered where the dimension decreases relatively more rapidly as a dissipation parameter is increased from zero and then exhibits a much slower rate of decrease. We provide a heuristic theory and numerical support from both discrete-time and continuous-time scattering systems to establish the generality of this phenomenon. Our result is expected to be important for physical phenomena such as the advection of inertial particles in open chaotic flows, among others.

The effect of several variables (stirring time, pH, temperature, metal concentration, presence of other metals) has been studied using batch and column techniques. In batch experiments, 15 min stirring time, 55 degrees C and pH 8 were the optimal conditions for Pb(II) adsorption. In column experiments, sorption was quantitative for 1000 mL of 2.41 x 10(-4 )mM of Pb(II) solution and adsorbed ions were eluted out by 5 mL of 1 M HCl (preconcentration factor of 200). Spiked tap water was used for the preconcentration and determination of Pb(II) by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and a 100% recovery was obtained. The LOD and LOQ values of the proposed method were found to be 3.52 x 10(-3) and 4.20 x 10(-3 )mM, respectively. The RSD for three preconcentration experiments was found to be

This paper examines the robustness of isochronous synchronization in simple arrays of bidirectionally coupled systems. First, the achronal synchronization of two mutually chaotic circuits, which are coupled with delay, is analyzed. Next, a third chaotic circuit acting as a relay between the previous two circuits is introduced. We observe that, despite the delay in the coupling path, the outer dynamical systems show isochronous synchronization of their outputs, i.e., display the same dynamics at exactly the same moment. Finally, we give here the first experimental evidence that the central relaying system is not required to be of the same kind of its outer counterparts.

Through phase plane analysis of a class of two-dimensional spiking and bursting neuron models, covering some of the most popular map-based neuron models, we show that there exists a trade-off between the sensitivity of the neuron to steady external stimulation and its resonance properties, and how this trade-off may be tuned by the neutral or asymptotic character of the slow variable. Implications of the results for the suprathreshold behavior of the neurons, both by themselves and as part of networks, are presented in different regimes of interest, such as the excitable, regular spiking, and bursting regimes. These results establish a consistent link between single-neuron parameters and resulting network dynamics, and will hopefully be useful as a guide for modeling.

Background and Aims: Germination and seedling establishment, which are critical stages in the regeneration process of plant populations, may be subjected to natural selection and adaptive evolution. The aims of this work were to assess the main limitations on offspring performance of Silene ciliata, a high mountain Mediterranean plant, and to test whether local adaptation at small spatial scales has a significant effect on the success of establishment., Methods: Reciprocal sowing experiments were carried out among three populations of the species to test for evidence of local adaptation on seedling emergence, survival and size. Studied populations were located at the southernmost margin of the species' range, along the local elevation gradient that leads to a drought stress gradient., Key Results: Drought stress in summer was the main cause of seedling mortality even though germination mainly occurred immediately after snowmelt to make the best use of soil moisture. The results support the hypothesis that species perform better at the centre of their altitudinal range than at the boundaries. Evidence was also found of local adaptation in seedling survival and growth along the whole gradient., Conclusions: The local adaptation acting on seedling emergence and survival favours the persistence of remnant populations on the altitudinal and latitudinal margins of mountain species. In a global warming context, such processes may help to counteract the contraction of this species' ranges and the consequent loss of habitat area.

We study the dynamics of networks of inhibitory map-based bursting neurons. Linear analysis allows us to understand how the patterns of bursting are determined by network topology and how they depend on the strength of synaptic connections, when inhibition is balanced. Two kinds of patterns are found depending on the symmetry of the network: slow cyclic patterns riding on subthreshold oscillations where almost all neurons contribute bursts in a sparse manner and fast patterns of bursts in which only one of two mutually exclusive groups of neurons take part. We also discuss the properties of the neuron model that underlie the described phenomena, comment on the limitations of the technique of analysis, and point to some possible ways to overcome them.

Background and Aims: Environmental variability at several scales can determine plant reproductive success. The main goal of this work was to model the reproductive flexibility of a semi-arid specialist considering different scales of environmental variability., Methods: A 2-year field study was performed on the determinants of the female reproductive success of Helianthemum squamatum, an Iberian gypsophyte, considering two scales of environmental variability: differences between two contrasting slope aspects; and, on individual scale, the neighbouring microenvironment. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate simultaneously the potential effects of environmental variability at both scales, together with flowering phenology and plant size on the reproductive output of H. squamatum. The following reproductive response variables were considered: number of flowers, fruit-set, number of viable and aborted seeds per fruit, and number of seeds per plant., Key Results: Contrary to expectations, environmental variability exerted a weak or even absent effect on the reproductive variables considered, while flowering phenology and plant size, which did not vary between slopes, played a major role. Surprisingly, the absolute reproductive variables were even higher in the extremely dry year of 2003, although only on the south-facing slope. The relatively milder conditions of the north-facing slope did not involve any advantage to this species in terms of reproductive output., Conclusions: The species seemed to be considerably well adapted to the environmental unpredictability characteristic of Mediterranean systems, considering its ability to maintain reproduction across contrasting environments and contrasting climatic conditions. These findings make us face the question of what must be considered stressful conditions in the case of a stress-tolerant specialist.

In the framework of transduction, nondestructive testing, and nonlinear acoustic characterization, this article presents the analysis of strongly nonlinear vibrations by means of an original numerical algorithm. In acoustic and transducer applications in extreme working conditions, such as the ones induced by the generation of high-power ultrasound, the analysis of nonlinear ultrasonic vibrations is fundamental. Also, the excitation and analysis of nonlinear vibrations is an emergent technique in nonlinear characterization for damage detection. A third-order evolution equation is derived and numerically solved for extensional waves in isotropic dissipative media. A nine-constant theory of elasticity for isotropic solids is constructed, and the nonlinearity parameters corresponding to extensional waves are proposed. The nonlinear differential equation is solved by using a new numerical algorithm working in the time domain. The finite-difference numerical method proposed is implicit and only requires the solution of a linear set of equations at each time step. The model allows the analysis of strongly nonlinear, one-dimensional vibrations and can be used for prediction as well as characterization. Vibration waveforms are calculated at different points, and results are compared for different excitation levels and boundary conditions. Amplitude distributions along the rod axis for every harmonic component also are evaluated. Special attention is given to the study of high-amplitude damping of vibrations by means of several simulations. Simulations are performed for amplitudes ranging from linear to nonlinear and weak shock.

Phenotypic plasticity is considered the major means by which plants cope with environmental heterogeneity. Although ubiquitous in nature, actual phenotypic plasticity is far from being maximal. This has been explained by the existence of internal limits to its expression. However, phenotypic plasticity takes place within an ecological context and plants are generally exposed to multifactor environments and to simultaneous interactions with many species. These external, ecological factors may limit phenotypic plasticity or curtail its adaptive value, but seldom have they been considered because limits to plasticity have typically addressed factors internal to the plant. We show that plastic responses to abiotic factors are reduced under situations of conservative resource use in stressful and unpredictable habitats, and that extreme levels in a given abiotic factor can negatively influence plastic responses to another factor. We illustrate how herbivory may limit plant phenotypic plasticity because damaged plants can only rarely attain the optimal phenotype in the challenging environment. Finally, it is examined how phenotypic changes involved in trait-mediated interactions can entail costs for the plant in further interactions with other species in the community. Ecological limits to plasticity must be included in any realistic approach to understand the evolution of plasticity in complex environments and to predict plant responses to global change.

Objectives: To evaluate the mechanical behavior of resin cements used for luting fiber post. The influence of the curing mode is analysed., Methods: Nanoindentation techniques have been applied to determine hardness and Young's modulus of disc-shaped specimens of three types of cements: chemical- , photo- and dual-cured, provided by Ivoclar-Vivadent. Results obtained have been compared with measurements performed inside the post-cement-dentin system. Mechanical properties are evaluated together with scanning electron micrographs showing the post-cement and dentin-cement interfaces., Results and Significance: Differences have been detected between mechanical measurements performed inside the post-cement-dentin system and those carried out in laboratory disc-shaped specimens. The close presence of post and dentin boundaries has a lot of influence on the cement behavior. The nanoindentation measurements indicate that the photo-cured cement exhibits a high hardness and stiffness, but with a more marked tendency to brittle failure. The chemically cured cement is the material with higher ability to bear deformation without damage, although its hardness and elastic modulus are significantly lower. Dual-cured cements present the best combination of properties.

Mountain plants are particularly sensitive to climate warming because snowmelt timing exerts a direct control on their reproduction. Current warming is leading to earlier snowmelt dates and longer snow-free periods. Our hypothesis is that high-mountain Mediterranean plants are not able to take advantage of a lengthened snow-free period because this leads to longer drought that truncates the growing season. However, reproductive timing may somewhat mitigate these negative effects through temporal shifts. We assessed the effects of flowering phenology on the reproductive success of Silene ciliata, a Mediterranean high-mountain plant, across an altitudinal gradient during two climatically contrasting years. The species showed a late-flowering pattern hampering the use of snowmelt water. Plant fitness was largely explained by the elapsed time from snowmelt to onset of flowering, suggesting a selective pressure towards early flowering caused by soil moisture depletion. The proportion of flowering plants decreased at the lowest population, especially in the drier year. Plants produced more flowers, fruits and seeds at the highest population and in the mild year. Our results indicate that water deficit in dry years could threaten the lowland populations of this mountainous species, while high-altitude environments are more stable over time.

In the framework of the study of nonlinear acoustic phenomena arising in high-power ultrasonic resonators, this paper deals with the numerical prediction of the behaviour of strongly nonlinear waves in resonators. In particular three-dimensional cavities in complex modal configurations are analyzed. The main motivation of this work is the understanding and optimisation of high-power ultrasonic applications in fluids. Based on conservation laws written in Lagrangian coordinates and the isentropic state equation, several evolution equations (one-dimensional, two-dimensional, three-dimensional and axisymmetric) are proposed and numerically solved in the time domain. No restriction on nonlinearity level is imposed. These developments allow the simulation of the time evolution of the pressure distribution inside the cavity, as well as the harmonics distribution. Distortion, nonlinear attenuation and rms pressure can be studied. Periodic (continue) and pulsed signal excitation are possible. Some results referred to complicated nonlinear waves are presented.

Through the last years, different strategies to enhance synchronization in complex networks have been proposed. In this work, we show that synchronization of nonidentical dynamical units that are attractively coupled in a small-world network is strongly improved by just making phase-repulsive a tiny fraction of the couplings. By a purely topological analysis that does not depend on the dynamical model, we link the emerging dynamical behavior with the structural properties of the sparsely coupled repulsive network.

Background and Aims: Although allopolyploidy is a prevalent speciation mechanism in plants, its adaptive consequences are poorly understood. In addition, the effects of allopolyploidy per se (i.e. hybridization and chromosome doubling) can be confounded with those of subsequent evolutionary divergence between allopolyploids and related diploids. This report assesses whether fern species with the same ploidy level or the same altitudinal distribution have similar germination responses to temperature. The effects of polyploidy on spore abortion and spore size are also investigated, since both traits may have adaptive consequences., Methods: Three allotetraploid (Dryopteris corleyi, D. filix-mas and D. guanchica) and three related diploid taxa (D. aemula, D. affinis ssp. affinis and D. oreades) were studied. Spores were collected from 24 populations in northern Spain. Four spore traits were determined: abortion percentage, size, germination time and germination percentage. Six incubation temperatures were tested: 8, 15, 20, 25 and 32 degrees C, and alternating 8/15 degrees C., Key Results: Allotetraploids had bigger spores than diploid progenitors, whereas spore abortion percentages were generally similar. Germination times decreased with increasing temperatures in a wide range of temperatures (8-25 degrees C), although final germination percentages were similar among species irrespective of their ploidy level. Only at low temperature (8 degrees C) did two allotetraploid species reach higher germination percentages than diploid parents. Allotetraploids showed faster germination rates, which would probably give them a competitive advantage over diploid parents. Germination behaviour was not correlated with altitudinal distribution of species., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that (i) relative fitness of allopolyploids at sporogenesis does not differ from that of diploid parents and (ii) neither does allopolyploidization involve a change in the success of spore germination.
