A reliable synthetic route to fused polycyclic indolines is documented by the development of a stereoselective gold catalyzed cascade cyclization of indole propargylic alcohols.

A new and convenient stereocontrolled synthesis of the optically pure (S)-alpha-methyl,alpha-amino acids 6(a-d) that exploits the chiral synthon 1,4-N,N-[(S)-1-phenylethyl]-piperazine-2,5-dione (1) is described. The (S)-1-phenylethyl group, bonded to each of the N-atoms of the 2,5-diketopiperazine, acts as a chiral inductor in the first alkylation, while the steric hindrance appears to be the determining factor of stereocontrol in third and forth alkylation.

A family of new functional bis-cyclometalated thiophene-based cationic iridium complexes have been prepared and fully characterized. The introduction of formyl groups into the thienyl-based cyclometalating ligand (thpy-CHO) allows one to perform further functionalizability and to confer to the whole species potentially interesting perspectives as functional materials. The X-ray crystal structures of three complexes, namely, [Ir(thpy)(2)bpy]PF(6), [Ir(thpy-CHO)(2)bpy]PF(6), and [Ir(thpy-CHO)(2)phen]PF(6), are reported. A rich reduction voltammetric pattern of the complexes is outlined, and the effect of the substituents on the cyclic voltammetric behavior is fully elucidated. Finally, the electrochemiluminescence spectra of all of the species have been obtained in acetonitrile by annihilation of the one-electron-oxidized and -reduced forms, showing very similar features with respect to the luminescence (as both the shape and energy of the emission bands).

A new anticancer-active platinum(II) compound [Pt(A9pyp)(dmso)(cbdca)], containing the E-1-(9-anthryl)-3-(2-pyridyl)-2-propenone ligand (abbreviated as A9pyp) has been synthesized by the replacement of the anionic chloride ligands in cis-[Pt(A9pyp)(dmso)Cl(2)] by the dianionic chelating cyclobutanedicarboxylate ligand (abbreviated as cbdca). The in vitro relevance of the leaving group of these new platinum(II) compounds has been investigated. Measurements of the time-dependent intracellular accumulation of both compounds in human ovarian carcinoma cell lines show that the leaving group affects their cellular uptake. In addition, the leaving group also influences DNA platination, and, therefore, has an effect on the biological activity against a pair of human ovarian carcinoma cell lines, i.e. sensitive and resistant to cisplatin.

A series of oligomers of the type Boc-(L-Phe-D-Oxd)(n)-OBn (Boc = tert-butoxycarbonyl; Oxd = 4-methyl-5-carboxy oxazolidin-2-one; Bn = benzyl) were prepared for n = 2-5. The shortest oligomer, Boc-(L-Phe-D-Oxd)(2)-OBn, aggregates and forms a fiber-like material with an anti-parallel beta-sheet structure in which the oligopeptide units are connected to each other by only one intermolecular hydrogen bond. The longer oligomers exhibit structural heterogeneity. They start to organize into secondary structures by the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds at the pentamer level. Microscopy and diffraction of the oligomers indicated a crystalline character for only the shorter ones.

By reacting copper(II) acrylate with pyrazole (Hpz), two trinuclear copper derivatives [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(CH2CHCOO)2(H2O)2(Hpz)], 1, and [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(CH2CHCOO)2(CH3OH)], 2, are obtained, in water and methanol respectively, while copper(II) methacrylate affords [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(CH2C(CH3)COO)2], 3, independently from the solvent used. In 1 and 2 two triangular trinuclear units are connected through acrylate bridges forming hexanuclear clusters that, in the case of 2 are further connected through double syn-syn carboxylate bridges, generating a 1-D coordination polymer. In the case of 3 a different 1-D coordination polymer is obtained by alternating syn-syn and syn-anti double carboxylate bridges connecting the trinuclear clusters. In all cases H-bonds contribute both to the stabilization of these arrangements and to the formation of more extended supramolecular networks. Compounds 1-3 are valuable catalysts in the peroxidative oxidation with aqueous H2O2, in MeCN at 25 degrees C, of cycloalkanes (i.e. cyclohexane and cyclopentane) to the corresponding ketones and alcohols (overall yield up to 36%, TON = 36), following a radical mechanism as shown by radical trap experiments, and the effects of various factors are studied. Electrochemical experiments show that the copper(II) centres are reduced to copper(I) and copper(0).

New (arene)ruthenium(II) derivatives containing neutral HL or anionic L(-) ligands (arene = p-cymene or benzene, HL in general, in particular HL(1) = bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid and HL(2) = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid) have been synthesized and analytically and spectrally characterized. The ligands in neutral form coordinate ruthenium in a chelating kappa(2)-N,N'-bidentate fashion affording 1:1 derivatives of formula [Ru(arene)(HL)Cl]Cl, where the inner Cl can be replaced by a phosphine. These derivatives show very high conductance values in water, due to the contribution of H(3)O(+) produced by deprotonation of the -COOH fragment in HL ligands and consequent formation of 1:2 electrolytes such as [Ru(arene)(kappa(3)-N,N',O-L)]Cl(2) species. However, the remaining derivatives contain monoanion L(-) ligands coordinating in the tripodal kappa(3)-N,N',O-tridentate fashion. The solid-state X-ray structure of the complex [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(kappa(3)-N,N',O-L(1))]PF(6) confirmed such behavior. The redox properties of those compounds have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, which, on the basis of their measured Ru(II/III) oxidation potentials, have allowed for the ordering of the HL and L(-) ligands according to their electron-donor character. This is accounted for by DFT calculations, which show a relevant contribution of L ligand orbitals to the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) when they are coordinated in the monoanionic tridentate form, while for derivatives containing neutral HL ligands, the main contribution to the HOMOs comes from orbitals of the metal and chlorine atoms, the overall contribution from the bidentate HL ligand orbitals being small. Values of the Lever electrochemical E(L) ligand parameter (a measure of the net electron donor character of a ligand) have been estimated for the above and related acylpyrazolonate ligands, as well as for the eta(6)-coordinated benzene and cymene.

Arene ruthenium(II) complexes containing bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands have been prepared by reacting the ligands L' (L' in general; specifically L(1) = H(2)C(pz)(2), L(2) = H(2)C(pz(Me2))(2), L(3) = H(2)C(pz(4Me))(2), L(4) = Me(2)C(pz)(2) and L(5) = Et(2)C(pz)(2) where pz = pyrazole) with [(arene)RuCl(mu-Cl)](2) dimers (arene = p-cymene or benzene). When the reaction was carried out in methanol solution, complexes of the type [(arene)Ru(L')Cl]Cl were obtained. When L(1), L(2), L(3), and L(5) ligands reacted with excess [(arene)RuCl(mu-Cl)](2), [(arene)Ru(L')Cl][(arene)RuCl(3)] species have been obtained, whereas by using the L(4) ligand under the same reaction conditions the unexpected [(p-cymene)Ru(pzH)(2)Cl]Cl complex was recovered. The reaction of 1 equiv of [(p-cymene)Ru(L')Cl]Cl and of [(p-cymene)Ru(pzH)(2)Cl]Cl with 1 equiv of AgX (X = O(3)SCF(3) or BF(4)) in methanol afforded the complexes [(p-cymene)Ru(L')Cl](O(3)SCF(3)) (L' = L(1) or L(2)) and [(p-cymene)Ru(pzH)(2)Cl]BF(4), respectively. [(p-cymene)Ru(L(1))(H(2)O)][PF(6)](2) formed when [(p-cymene)Ru(L(1))Cl]Cl reacts with an excess of AgPF(6). The solid-state structures of the three complexes, [(p-cymene)Ru{H(2)C(pz)(2)}Cl]Cl, [(p-cymene)Ru{H(2)Cpz(4Me))(2)}Cl]Cl, and [(p-cymene)Ru{H(2)C(pz)(2)}Cl](O(3)SCF(3)), were determined by X-ray crystallographic studies. The interionic structure of [(p-cymene)Ru(L(1))Cl](O(3)SCF(3)) and [(p-cymene)Ru(L')Cl][(p-cymene)RuCl(3)] (L' = L(1) or L(2)) was investigated through an integrated experimental approach based on NOE and pulsed field gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR experiments in CD(2)Cl(2) as a function of the concentration. PGSE NMR measurements indicate the predominance of ion pairs in solution. NOE measurements suggest that (O(3)SCF(3))(-) approaches the cation orienting itself toward the CH(2) moiety of the L(1) (H(2)C(pz)(2)) ligand as found in the solid state. Selected Ru species have been preliminarily investigated as catalysts toward styrene oxidation by dihydrogen peroxide, [(p-cymene)Ru(L(1))(H(2)O)][PF(6)](2) being the most active species.

1-Allyl-2-pyrroleimines obtained from (S)-valinol and (S)-phenylglycinol underwent highly diastereoselective addition of allylmagnesium chloride, used in excess amounts, to give the corresponding secondary amines with concomitant allyl to (Z)-1-propenyl isomerization of the 1-pyrrole substituent. Transformation of the 2-amino alcohol moiety to an oxazolidinone, or its cleavage and subsequent N-protection, followed by ring-closing metathesis of the two alkene groups gave the unsaturated bicyclic compound. Full hydrogenation of the alkene function and the aromatic rings afforded the indolizidine derivative as a mixture of two or three diastereomers with a ratio which was dependent on the nature of both the N-substituent and the catalyst. The two prevalent diastereomers were isolated, and their configuration was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Formation of the trinuclear triangular copper derivative [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(EtCOO)2(H2O)] x H2O, 1b (Hpz = pyrazole), has been simply achieved by addition of Hpz to a water solution of Cu(EtCOO)2 x H2O and leaving the resulting solution to crystallize at ca. 12 degrees C. When the reaction and crystallization were carried out at a slightly higher temperature (18-22 degrees C), the compound [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(EtCOO)2(H2O)], 1c, formed. Single-crystal X-ray molecular structure determinations show that both compounds have analogous trinuclear triangular structures, but very different supramolecular assemblies, due mainly, but not only, to the crystallization molecule of H2O in 1b. In particular, contrarily to the previously reported, strictly related, [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(EtCOO)2(EtOH)], 1a, the propionate ions in 1b and 1c do not bridge different triangular units, whereas they are involved in intra- and intermolecular H-bonds, generating complex supramolecular 2-D MOFs. Compounds 1a and 1c act as remarkably active and selective catalysts or catalyst precursors for liquid biphasic (MeCN/H2O) peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclopentane to the corresponding alcohols and ketones.

The design, synthesis and properties of liquid-crystalline semiconducting oligothiophenes containing dithienothiophene (DTT), benzothiadiazole (BTZ) and carbazole (CBZ) rigid cores are described. The effect of molecular structure (shape, size and substitution) on their thermal behaviour and electrical properties has been investigated. Polarised optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses have revealed highly ordered smectic mesophases for most of the newly synthesised compounds. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies performed at various temperatures have shown that the smectic order is retained in the crystalline state upon cooling across the transition temperature, affording cast films with a more favourable morphology for FET applications.

A new class of chiral oligothiophenes is described. Mono-, bi-, ter-, and quarterthiophenes have been linked to enantiopure trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (DACH) via diamino or diimino moieties. The stereochemistry of DACH, the type of linker, and oligothiophene size determine the conformational flexibility of these molecules and consequently their molecular and supramolecular helicity in solution and in the solid state. The case of diaminobis(bithiophene), which inverts helicity and shows chiral amplification in the transition from solution to film, is described in detail. Based on the combined use of circular dichroism in solution and in the solid state, single-crystal/thin-film X-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy, a working mechanism has been proposed to explain this unexpected behavior.

New chiral chelating C2 bis-oxazoline-amide ligands (1) exhibiting a highly flexible molecular structure have been prepared in high yield through a versatile synthetic pathway. Combined crystallographic, variable temperature (VT)-NMR, IR, and ESI-MS studies have been carried out to investigate the nature of the 1-Pd complexes that are effective tools in controlling the stereochemical outcome of Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylations (ee up to 98%).

Three sets of oligomers containing the 4-carboxy-5-methyloxazolidin-2-one (Oxd) moiety have been synthesized with the aim of checking whether these molecules are able to fold in ordered structures: A set [Boc-(L-Ala-L-Oxd)(n)-OR], B set [Boc-(L-Ala-D-Oxd)(n)-OR], and C set [Boc-(Aib-L-Oxd)(n)-OR] preferential conformations have been analyzed with IR absorption, NMR, and CD. We have noticed that in these oligomers three stabilizing effects are active: (i) the rigid Oxd -CO-N(CH<)-CO- moiety, which always tend to assume a trans conformation; (ii) the formation of Oxd C=O...H-(alpha)C intramolecolar H-bonds; (iii) the alternate formation of 1 <-- 4 intramolecular C=O...H-N H-bonds. Through the analysis of the experimental data, we could demonstrate that only the oligomers of the B set are able to meet all three requirements listed above. By a deeper insight into the CD spectra, we gathered that the secondary structure adopted by the B set oligomers is a beta-bend ribbon spiral, which is a subtype of the 3(10)-helix.

A new family of mono- and dinuclear ruthenium polypyridyl complexes containing 5-aryltetrazolate ligands such as the deprotonated form of 4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzonitrile (4-TBNH) and bis(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzene (BTBH(2)) have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The reactivity of the mononuclear species toward different electrophiles such as H(+) and CH(3)(+) has been investigated, and the effects of the resulting regioselective electrophilic attacks on the electronic and structural properties of the tetrazolate ligand have been studied by NMR ((1)H, (13)C) spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structures. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, together with an electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical investigation of the uncoordinated ligand and complexes, has been performed, highlighting a rather good luminescence efficiency and a poor bridge-mediated electronic communication between the metal centers of the dinuclear complexes. The electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of the dinuclear species has been explored, and for one of these, an exceptionally high ECL efficiency has been observed, comparable to that of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+), which is considered a standard in ECL studies.

The synthesis, characterization, and structure-guided application of a new class of highly versatile chiral C(2)-symmetric diamine-oligothiophene ligands in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric transformations are presented. Experimental investigations of the intimate role of pendant pi-conjugate oligothiophenes in determining the catalytic activity of the corresponding chiral Pd complexes are described. Their unusual behavior opens up new routes toward the logical design of finely tuned organometallic catalysts by remote structural functionalizations.

The chiral clusters [H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(12-n)(L)(n)] (n = 1, 2; L = NMDPP), 1,1-[H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(L-L)] (L-L = DUPHOS, DIPAMP), 1,2-[H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(DIOP)] and [{H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(DIOP)}(2)] have been synthesized by derivatizing the parent carbonyl cluster [H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(12)] with the appropriate mono- or didentate chiral phosphine ligand. The phosphine-substituted clusters were found to be able to catalyze the (asymmetric) hydrogenation of tiglic acid albeit with relatively low selectivity (enantiomeric excesses varying from 0 to 23%). It was found that the stability of the chiral ruthenium hydride clusters and the product distribution obtained in the catalytic reactions are dependent on the nature of the chiral phosphine. The crystal structures of [H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(12-n)(L)(n)] (n = 1, 2; L = NMDPP), 1,1-[H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(L-L)] (L-L = DUPHOS, O-DUPHOS (partially oxygenated ligand), DIPAMP), 1,2-[H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(DIOP)] and [{H(4)Ru(4)(CO)(10)(DIOP)}(2)] are presented.

The reactions of pyrazole (Hpz) with some copper(II) carboxylates in the presence of water yield trinuclear copper derivatives characterized by the triangular core [Cu3mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(RCOO)2] (R = H, C2H5, C3H7). Copper(II) formate gives [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(HCOO)2(Hpz)2] (1), whereas copper propionate and butyrate afford [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(C2H5COO)2(EtOH)] (2) and [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(C3H7COO)2(MeOH)(H2O)] (3), respectively, both containing solvent molecules coordinated to copper atoms. Magnetic susceptibilities are consistent with a single unpaired electron for each trinuclear unit of 1-3, and EPR measurements indicate that higher spin states, generated by exchange coupling between copper atoms, may be populated at room temperature. Density-functional calculations provide the description of the electronic structures of 1-3, allowing, at the same time, the assignment of their UV-vis absorption spectra. X-ray molecular structure determinations show that triangular trinuclear units of 1 are connected to each other through single formate bridges, forming one-dimensional (1D) zigzag coordination polymers, whereas in 2 and 3, two oxygen atoms of two carboxylate ions doubly bridge two copper atoms of different triangles, thus generating hexanuclear units. Moreover, in 2, two other propionate ions link together two hexanuclear units yielding a 12-membered cycle and giving rise to 1D coordination polymers. The supramolecular assemblies of 1-3 are compared to that of the previously reported trinuclear triangular copper(II) derivative [Cu3(mu3-OH)(mu-pz)3(CH3COO)2(Hpz)] (A), where a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer is present. The reactions of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (Hpz) with copper(II) carboxylates in the same conditions yield 1:2 Cu(RCOO)2/Hpz adducts.

[reaction: see text] The aldol condensation of acetone with several isatins is described. The desired compound was obtained in quantitative yield and with good enantioselectivities up to 77%. The best results were obtained with 10 mol % H-D-Pro-L-beta3-hPhg-OBn as a catalyst, resulting in the preferential formation of the (R)-enantiomer. The absolute configuration of the newly formed chiral center has been assigned by an X-ray diffraction study and CD spectra analysis of the molecules.

The almost quantitative formation of the triangular trinuclear copper derivative [Cu3(3-OH)(-pz)3(MeCOO)2(Hpz)] (1) (Hpz = pyrazole), has been simply achieved by adding Hpz to an ethanol solution of Cu(MeCOO)2 x H2O. An X-ray molecular structure determination shows that 1 is completely unsymmetric and that trinuclear units result assembled in an extended bidimensional network formed through acetate bridges and hydrogen bonds. EPR and magnetic measurements are consistent with the presence of a single unpaired electron. Theoretical density functional calculations carried out for S = 1/2 provide a thorough description of the electronic structure of 1, allowing a detailed assignment of its UV-vis absorption spectrum. Compound 1 reacts with MeONa, yielding [Cu3(micro3-OH)(micro-pz)3(MeCOO)(MeO)(Hpz)] (2) and [Cu3(micro3-OH)(micro-pz)3(MeO)2(Hpz)] (3) through the substitution of one and two acetate ions, respectively, with MeO- ion(s). The spontaneous self-assembly of the triangular trinuclear Cu3 moiety seems to occur only with pyrazole as can be inferred by the results obtained in the reactions of copper(II) acetate with some substituted pyrazoles leading to the formation of mononuclear [Cu(MeCOO)2(L)2] (4-8) and dinuclear [Cu(MeCOO)2(L)]2 (9-11) (L = substituted pyrazole) compounds. Also the presence of acetate ions seems to play a leading role in determining the formation of the trinuclear triangular arrangement, as indicated by the formation of a mononuclear derivative, [Cu(CF3COO)2(Hpz)]2 (compound 12), in the reaction of copper(II) trifluoroacetate with pyrazole. Compounds 1-3, as well as some other mono- and dinuclear copper(II)-substituted pyrazole complexes, have been tested as catalyst precursors in cyclopropanation reaction, observing the formation of products in a syn:anti ratio opposite that normally reported., (Copyright 2004 American Chemical Society)

The silver-assisted ligand metathesis reaction involving a platinum(II) complex of formula [PtClMe(N,N-chelate)] with acetonitrile has been investigated. By using a suitably hindered N,N-chelate, an otherwise hardly detectable trinuclear species has been isolated and characterized through X-ray diffractometry. The trinuclear cation consists of two nearly orthogonal [PtCl(Me)(N,N-chelate)] square-planar units entrapping an Ag(+) cation through the chloride ligands that, acting as bidentate, form a linear AgCl(2) unit with two nonequivalent Ag-Cl bonds. The residual acidity of the silver cation is satisfied by one secondary Ag-Pt interaction [Ag-Pt(1) = 2.82 A] in which the platinum atom acts as a donor. Kinetic studies have demonstrated that the silver assistance operates both through a simple associative step and through a pathway in which the above trinuclear complex is an active intermediate. In a noncoordinating solvent the latter species evolves with AgCl loss and formation of a dinuclear Pt,Pt complex showing a rare single chloride bridge.

Reaction between [(eta5-Cp')3Mo3S4]+ and [Ni(1,5-cod)2] (Cp' = methylcyclopentadienyl; 1,5-cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in THF at ambient temperature yielded a coordinatively unsaturated cubane-like cluster cation, [(eta5-Cp')3Mo3S4Ni]+. The ligand sphere at the Ni atom could be saturated by coordinating dimethyl sulfide, diethyl sulfide, di(tert-butyl) sulfide, tetrahydrothiophene, thiochroman-4-ol, 1,4-dithiane, pyridine, quinoline, or 4,4'-bipyridine. The products structurally model a mode of substrate coordination on proposed binding sites of heterogeneous MoNi sulfide hydrotreating catalysts. No stable coordination compounds could be isolated for thiophene derivatives. X-ray crystal structures are reported for the ligand-bridged dicluster compounds [[(eta5-Cp')3Mo3S4Ni]2(mu-C4H4S2)][pts]2 (C4H8S2 = 1,4-dithiane) and [[(eta5-Cp')3Mo3S4Ni]2(mu-bipy)][pts]2 (bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine).
