Recent progress in the development of edge-emitting and surface-emitting photonic-crystal distributed-feedback lasers is reviewed. Abstract

A differential 3ω technique is employed to determine the thermal conductivity of the AlAs[SUB0.07]Sb[SUB0.93] ternary alloy, the Al[SUB0.9]Ga[SUB0.l]AS[SUB0.07]Sb[SUB0.93] quaternary alloy, and an (AlAs)[SUB1] /(AlSb)[SUB11] digital-alloy superlattice. Between 80 and 300 K, the thermal conductivities for all three samples are relatively insensitive to temperature. The thermal conductivity of the (AlAs)[SUB1] /(AlSb)[SUB11] superlattice is smaller than that of the AlAs[SUB0.07]Sb[SUB0.93] ternary alloy, but much larger than the predictions of a model for phonon transport across the superlattice interfaces. A ten-stage interband cascade laser with 13 µm-wide, 4 mm-long ridge waveguide and Au electroplating for improved epitaxial-side-up heatsinking operates CW to a temperature of 269 K, where the emission wavelength is 4.05 µm. A five-stage interband cascade laser with ridge width 22 µm and Au electro-plating for improved epitaxial-side-up heatsinking emits >260 mW per facet for CW operation at 80 K (λ=3.4 µm) and 100 mW at 200 K (λ=3.6 µm). 649. Impact of National Tax Policies on Homeownership.

Abstract

"Though most would argue that homeownership gains more from federal income tax structure than does owning rental stock, some tax benefits accrue to landlords that do not accrue to owner‐occupants. This paper explores the differences between the costs of owning housing and the rents landlords must charge to earn a certain return on equity for particular properties, in various years from 1960 to the present. The paper also speculates on the effects of certain changes in the tax structure on costs to owners and landlords through the 1980s. In the 1960s the advantages of being an owner‐occupant over being a landlord increased as the value of the property increased. This trend became more pronounced in the early to mid‐1970s, and it continued into the late 10702, though the differences between owners and landlords became less marked. The economics of the early 1980s revived the balance between the two groups, but with exceptionally high real estate prices." The authors conclude that although real estate offers "a good tax shelter, given deducibility of interest and taxes, measures aimed at decreasing such advantages would present even greater problems."
