The influence of microlensing in the profiles of the emission lines generated in a biconical geometry is discussed. Microlensing amplification in this anisotropic model is not directly related to the bicone's intrinsic size but depends on the orientation of the bicone axis and on the cone aperture. The orientation of the projected bicone with respect to the shear of the magnification pattern can induce very interesting effects, like the quasi-periodic enhancements of the red/blue part of the emission line profile or the lack of correlation between the broad line region (BLR) and continuum light curves of QSOs. The emission line profiles of a BLR moving in a high caustic concentration exhibit sharp features that are well defined in wavelength. These features (spikes) correspond to the scanning of the kinematics of the BLR by the caustic clusters. The biconical model can qualitatively reproduce with a transversal (with respect to the shear) movement of the BLR, the recurrent blue-wing enhancement detected in the emission line profile of the A image of the quasar lensed system SDSS J1004+4112. The probability of observing this repetitive event is almost a 2% for a fraction of matter in stars of a 5%. This result would make plausible the detection of the spectral variability in SDSS J1004+4112 under the hypothesis of microlensing of a bicone., Comment: 21 figures, quality severely reduced. The huge star formation events that occur at some galactic centers do not provide enough clues as to their origin, since the morphological signatures of the triggering mechanism are smeared out in the timescale of a few orbital revolutions of the galaxy core. Our high spatial resolution three-dimensional near-infrared spectroscopy for the first time reveals that a previously known hidden mass concentration is located exactly at the youngest end of a giant star-forming arc. This location, the inferred average cluster ages, and the dynamical times clearly indicate that the interloper has left behind a spur of violent star formation in M 83, in a transient event lasting less than one orbital revolution. The study of the origin (bar funneling or cannibalized satellite) and fate (black hole merging or giant stellar cluster) of this system could provide clues to the question of core growing and morphological evolution in grand-design spiral galaxies. In particular, our TreeSPH numerical modeling suggests that the two nuclei could coalesce, forming a single massive core in about 60 million years or less., Comment: 18 pages, including 4 figures (3 in color). In this work we study the physical and kinematical properties of the emission line region of Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Mrk 817 using three sets of observations, among which are high-resolution spectra obtained with the Isaac Newton Telescope on Canary Islands. We find that in Mrk 817 the Narrow (NEL) and Broad Emission Lines (BEL) are very complex, indicating that structure of both the Narrow (NLR) and Broad Line Region (BLR) is complex and consists of at least two sub-regions with different kinematical properties. We find that the BEL can be fitted with the two-component model, where the core of the line is coming from a spherical region with isotropic velocity distribution, and wings might be affected by a low inclined accretion disc (or disc-like emitting region). Also, we discuss the physical properties of the BLR. In this work we present the first results of a study of BAL QSOs (at low and high redshift), based on very deep Gemini GMOS integral field spectroscopy. In particular, the results obtained for the nearest BAL IR QSO Mrk 231 are presented. Very deep three-dimensional spectra and maps clearly show that the BAL systems I and II are extended (reaching 1.4-1.6" = 1.2-1.3 kpc, from the nucleus) and clearly elongated at the position angle close to the radio jet PA. Which suggest that the BAL systems I and II are both associated with the radio jet, and supporting the bipolar jet-wind model for some BALs. For the nuclear region of Mrk 231, the QSO and host-galaxy components were modelled, using a new technique of decoupling 3D spectra. From this study, the following main results were found: (i) in the pure host galaxy spectrum an extreme nuclear starburst component was clearly observed, mainly as a very strong increase in the flux, at the blue wavelengths; (ii) the BAL system I is observed in the spectrum of the host galaxy; (iii) in the clean/pure QSO emission spectrum, only broad lines were detected. 3D GMOS individual spectra (specially in the IR Ca II triplet) and maps confirm the presence of an extreme and young nuclear starburst (8 < age < 15 Myr), which was detected mainly in a ring or toroid with a radius r = 0.3" = 200 pc, around the very nucleus. The physical properties of the four expanding nuclear bubbles were analysed, using the GMOS 3D spectra and maps. The luminous infrared galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) is studied using optical integral field spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images. The stellar and ionized gas morphology shows lambda-dependent variations due to the combined effects of the dust internal extinction, and the nature and spatial distribution of the different ionizing sources. The two-dimensional ionization maps have revealed an off-nuclear conical structure of about 4 kpc in length, characterized by high excitation conditions and a radial gradient in the gas electron density. The apex of this structure coincides with B1 region of NGC3690 which, in turn, presents Seyfert-like ionization, high extinction and a high velocity dispersion. These results strongly support the hypothesis that B1 is the true nucleus of NGC3690, where an AGN is located. In the circumnuclear regions HII-like ionization dominates, while LINER-like ionization is found elsewhere. The Halpha emitting sources with ages from 3.3 to 7.2x10^6 years, have masses of between 6 and 680x10^6 Msun and contribute (extinction corrected) about 45% to the bolometric luminosity. The ionized (Halpha) and neutral (NaD) gas velocity fields show similar structure on scales of several hundred to about 1 kpc, indicating that these gas components are kinematically coupled. The kinematic structure is complex and on scales of about 0.2 kpc does not appear to be dominated by the presence of ordered, rotational motions. The large velocity dispersion measured in NGC3690 indicates that this galaxy is the most massive of the system. We present integral field spectroscopic observations of the quadruple-lensed QSO SDSS 1004+4112 taken with the fiber system INTEGRAL at the William Herschel Telescope on 2004 January 19. In May 2003 a blueward enhancement in the high ionization lines of SDSS 1004+4112A was detected and then faded. Our observations are the first to note a second event of similar characteristics less than one year after. Although initially attributed to microlensing, the resemblance among the spectra of both events and the absence of microlensing-induced changes in the continuum of component A are puzzling. The lack of a convincing explanation under the microlensing or intrinsic variability hypotheses makes the observed enhancements particularly relevant, calling for close monitoring of this object., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The observed enhancement of the Fe K$\alpha$ line in three gravitationally lensed QSOs (MG J0414+0534, QSO 2237+0305, H1413+117) is interpreted in terms of microlensing, even when equivalent X-ray continuum amplification is not observed. In order to interpret these observations, first we studied the effects of microlensing on quasars spectra, produced by straight fold caustic crossing over standard relativistic accretion disk. The disk emission was analyzed using the ray tracing method, considering Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics. When the emission is separated in two regions (an inner disk corresponding to the Fe K$\alpha$ line and an outer annulus corresponding to the continuum, or vice-versa) we find microlensing events which enhance the Fe K$\alpha$ line without noticeable amplification of the X-ray continuum, but only during a limited time interval. Continuum amplification is expected if a complete microlensing event is monitored. Second, we studied a more realistic case of amplification by caustic magnification pattern. In this case we could satisfactorily explain the observations if the Fe K$\alpha$ line is emitted from the innermost part of the accretion disk, while the continuum is emitted from a larger region. Also, we studied the chromatic effects of microlensing, finding that the radial distribution of temperature in the accretion disk, combined with microlensing itself, can induce wavelength dependent variability of $\sim$ 30% for microlenses with very small masses. All these results show that X-ray monitoring of gravitational lenses is a well suited method for studying of the innermost structure of AGN accretion disks., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We explore the use of Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) to observe extrasolar planet transits. Although this technique should find its full potential in space observations (e.g. JWST, TPF), we have tested its basics with ground based time series observations of HD209458b obtained with WHT+INTEGRAL during a transit. For this analysis we used 5550 spectra, obtained in 150 exposures during a period of >7 hours. We found that IFS offers 3 fundamental advantages with respect to previously used methods. (i) It improves the effective S/N in photon limited observations by distributing the light coming from the star into the 2 dimensions of the detector. (ii) This type of IFS data allows to 'auto-calibrate' instrumental and background effects. (iii) Since the star image characteristics as well as its photometric properties are extracted from the same data-cube, it is possible to decorrelate photometric instabilities induced by PSF variations. These data have also allowed us to explore the accuracy limits of ground based 'relative' spectrophotometry. This was done using a photometric index that probes the NaD lines, for which we obtained a nominal 1-sigma error of ~1.0x10^-4. This result, based on observations of only 1 transit, indicates that this type of ground observation can constrain the characterization of the transmission spectrum of extrasolar planets. The present observations are compatible with no extra NaD depression during the transit. Though this result seems to be inconsistent with the recently reported HST-STIS findings we point out its limited statistical meaning: the results disagree within 1-sigma, but agree within 2-sigma. We continue the development of our Voronoi Galaxy Cluster Finder (VGCF) technique by applying it to galaxy catalogs obtained with B and R band observations of four high galactic latitude fields of 0.5x0.5 square degrees each. These fields are deep R_lim ~23, B_lim ~26 and partially overlap the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS) fields at 0h and 2h. We run the VGCF also on the original V and I bands PDCS galaxy catalogs. We identify a total of 48 clusters that are particularly reliable being detected in at least two bands. The analysis of color-magnitude diagrams and, in a few cases, spectroscopic observations allow us to further increase the reliability of 25 of the 48 clusters. For these 26 clusters we also estimate redshifts that fall in the approximate range 0.2 < z < 0.6. We detect 41 VGCF clusters within the strict limits of the PDCS fields at 0h and 2h. The PDCS catalog for the same regions consists of 28 clusters. The two catalogs have 20 clusters in common. These clusters together with the remaining PDCS and VGCF clusters lead to a total number of 46 "independent" clusters. The total number of clusters is therefore 20% larger than the number of VGCF clusters and more than 60% larger than the number of PDCS clusters. These results confirm a) that the VGCF is a competitive algorithm for the identification of optical clusters, and b) that a combined catalog of matched-filter and VGCF clusters constitutes a significant progress toward a more complete selection of clusters from bidimensional optical data., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A

We present integral field spectroscopy of NGC 5033, a low luminosity Seyfert galaxy. The observations were made with INTEGRAL, a fiber based system operating at the WHT. The intensity map of the H$\beta$ emission line represents a spiral or ring-like pattern of HII regions. On the contrary, the [OIII] intensity map morphology is markedly anisotropic. The strong morphological differences imply that the [OIII] emitters represent highly ionized gas illuminated by the central source. The [OIII] map morphology is compatible with a biconical structure of ionization induced by strong extinction in the galaxy disc that also obscures half of the spheroidal stellar bulge. We identify the spectrum corresponding to the Seyfert 1 nucleus from the presence of H$\beta$ broad emission lines. This spectrum is located in a region where strong extinction is expected but exhibits the bluest spectral energy distribution. The Seyfert 1 nucleus seems to be offcenter with respect to the stellar rotation center. This result has been also found in other Seyfert galaxies and interpreted in terms of a past merger. The offcentering could indicate the presence of nonsymmetric departures in the gravitational potential which could be fueling the active nucleus. The kinematics of the [OIII] emitters show important deviations at a kpc scale with respect to the stellar velocity field and show features related to the asymmetrical morphology of the high ionization region., Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. IFS combined with HST WFPC imaging were used to characterize the central regions of the Seyfert 1 radio galaxy 3C 120. We carried out the analysis of the data, deriving intensity maps of different emission lines and the continua at different wavelengths from the observed spectra. Applying a 2D modeling to the HST images we decoupled the nucleus and the host galaxy, and analyzed the host morphology. The host is a highly distorted bulge dominated galaxy, rich in substructures. We developed a new technique to model the IFS data extending the 2D modeling. Using this technique we separated the Seyfert nucleus and the host galaxy spectra, and derived a residual data cube with spectral and spatial information of the different structures in 3C 120. Three continuum-dominated structures (named A, B, and C) and other three extended emission line regions (EELRs, named E1, E2 and E3) are found in 3C 120 which does not follow the general behavior of a bulge dominated galaxy. We also found shells in the central kpc that may be remnants of a past merging event in this galaxy. The origin of E1 is most probably due to the interaction of the radio-jet of 3C 120 with the intergalactic medium. Structures A, B, and the shell at the southeast of the nucleus seem to correspond to a larger morphological clumpy structure that may be a tidal tail, consequence of the past merging event. We found a bright EELR (E2) in the innermost part of this tidal tail, nearby the nucleus, which shows a high ionization level. We present VR magnification ratios of QSO 0957+561, which are inferred from the GLITP light curves of Q0957+561A and new frames taken with the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope about 14 months after the GLITP monitoring. From two photometric approaches and a reasonable range for the time delay in the system (415-430 days), we do not obtain achromatic optical continuum ratios, but ratios depending on the wavelength. These new measurements are consistent with differential extinction in the lens galaxy, the Lyman limit system, the damped Ly-alpha system, or the host galaxy of the QSO. The possible values for the differential extinction and the ratio of total to selective extinction in the V band are reasonable. Moreover, crude probability arguments suggest that the ray paths of the two components cross a similar dusty environment, including a network of compact dust clouds and compact dust voids. As an alternative (in fact, the usual interpretation of the old ratios), we also try to explain the new ratios as caused by gravitational microlensing in the deflector. From magnification maps for each of the gravitationally lensed images, using different fractions of the surface mass density represented by the microlenses, as well as different sizes and profiles of the V-band and R-band sources, several synthetic distributions of V-band and R-band ratios are derived. In some gravitational scenarios, there is an apparent disagreement between the observed pair of ratios and the simulated distributions. However, several microlensing pictures work well. In this Work we report, for the extreme starburst in the IR merger NGC 3256: (i) The detection of 4 galactic bubbles, associated with SN explosions.(ii) The first analysis of the spatial distribution of young star clusters (YSC) candidates.(iii) The kinematic study of the ionized gas in the core of of the main optical nucleus, performed with HST STIS spectra. We present integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of the central region of 3C 120. We have modeled the nuclear and host galaxy 3D spectra using techniques normally applied to imaging, decoupling both components, and obtained a residual datacube. Using this residual datacube, we detected the extended emission line region associated with the radio jet. We obtained, for the first time, a clean spectrum of this region and found compelling evidences of a jet-cloud interaction. The jet compresses and splits the gas cloud which is ionized by the AGN and/or by the strong local UV photon field generated by a shock process. We cannot confirm the detection of an extended emission line region associated with the counter-jet reported by Axon (1989)., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publishing in ApJ

A study of morphology, kinematics and ionization structure of the IR merger NGC 5514, is presented. This study is based mainly on Integral 2D spectroscopy obtained on 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain) and data from CASLEO (Argentina). Clear evidence of two extra-nuclear starbursts with young outflows and LINER activity are reported. One of these outflow generate a supergiant bubble, where the emission lines and kinematics maps show 4 extended ejections.
