Recent evidence indicates that empathic responses to others' pain are modulated by various situational and individual factors. However, few studies have examined how empathy and underlying brain functions are modulated by social hierarchies, which permeate human society with an enormous impact on social behavior and cognition. In this study, social hierarchies were established based on incidental skill in a perceptual task in which all participants were mediumly ranked. Afterwards, participants were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging while watching inferior-status or superior-status targets receiving painful or non-painful stimulation. The results revealed that painful stimulation applied to inferior-status targets induced higher activations in the anterior insula (AI) and anterior medial cingulate cortex (aMCC), whereas these empathic brain activations were significantly attenuated in response to superior-status targets' pain. Further, this neural empathic bias to inferior-status targets was accompanied by stronger functional couplings of AI with brain regions important in emotional processing (i.e. thalamus) and cognitive control (i.e. middle frontal gyrus). Our findings indicate that emotional sharing with others' pain is shaped by relative positions in a social hierarchy such that underlying empathic neural responses are biased toward inferior-status compared with superior-status individuals., (© The Author (2015). Efficient implicit emotion regulation processes, which run without awareness, are important for human well-being. In this study, to investigate the influence of implicit emotion regulation on psychological and electrophysiological responses to gains and losses, participants were required to select between two Chinese four-character idioms to match the meaning of the third one before they performed a monetary gambling task. According to whether their meanings were related to emotion regulation, the idioms fell into two categories. Event-related potentials and self-rating emotional experiences to outcome feedback were recorded during the task. Priming emotion regulation reduced subjective emotional experience to both gains and losses and the amplitudes of the feedback-related negativity, while the P3 component was not influenced. According to these results, we suggest that the application of implicit emotion regulation effectively modulated the subjective emotional experience and the motivational salience of current outcomes without the cost of cognitive resources. Comparing early- and late-onset blindness in individuals offers a unique model for studying the influence of visual experience on neural processing. This study investigated how prior visual experience would modulate auditory spatial processing among blind individuals. BOLD responses of early- and late-onset blind participants were captured while performing a sound localization task. The task required participants to listen to novel "Bat-ears" sounds, analyze the spatial information embedded in the sounds, and specify out of 15 locations where the sound would have been emitted. In addition to sound localization, participants were assessed on visuospatial working memory and general intellectual abilities. The results revealed common increases in BOLD responses in the middle occipital gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, precuneus, and precentral gyrus during sound localization for both groups. Between-group dissociations, however, were found in the right middle occipital gyrus and left superior frontal gyrus. The BOLD responses in the left superior frontal gyrus were significantly correlated with accuracy on sound localization and visuospatial working memory abilities among the late-onset blind participants. In contrast, the accuracy on sound localization only correlated with BOLD responses in the right middle occipital gyrus among the early-onset counterpart. The findings support the notion that early-onset blind individuals rely more on the occipital areas as a result of cross-modal plasticity for auditory spatial processing, while late-onset blind individuals rely more on the prefrontal areas which subserve visuospatial working memory.

The willingness to incur personal costs to enforce prosocial norms represents a hallmark of human civilization. Although recent neuroscience studies have used the ultimatum game to understand the neuropsychological mechanisms that underlie the enforcement of fairness norms; however, a precise characterization of the neural systems underlying fairness-related norm enforcement remains elusive. In this study, we used a coordinate-based meta-analysis on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using the ultimatum game with the goal to provide an additional level of evidence for the refinement of the underlying neural architecture of this human puzzling behavior. Our results demonstrated a convergence of reported activation foci in brain networks associated with psychological components of fairness-related normative decision making, presumably reflecting a reflexive and intuitive system (System 1) and a reflective and deliberate system (System 2). System 1 (anterior insula, ventromedial prefrontal cortex [PFC]) may be associated with the reflexive and intuitive responses to norm violations, representing a motivation to punish norm violators. Those intuitive responses conflict with economic self-interest, encoded in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which may engage cognitive control from a reflective and deliberate System 2 to resolve the conflict by either suppressing (ventrolateral PFC, dorsomedial PFC, left dorsolateral PFC, and rostral ACC) the intuitive responses or over-riding self-interest (right dorsolateral PFC). Taken together, we suggest that fairness-related norm enforcement recruits an intuitive system for rapid evaluation of norm violations and a deliberate system for integrating both social norms and self-interest to regulate the intuitive system in favor of more flexible decision making., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Although trait anxiety has been associated with risk decision making, whether it is related to risk per se or to the feeling of the risk, as well as the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms, remains unclear. Using a decision-making task with a manipulation of frame (i.e., written description of options as a potential gain or loss) and functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neurocognitive relationship between trait anxiety and decision making. The classic framing effect was observed: participants chose the safe option when it was described as a potential gain, but they avoided the same option when it was described as a potential loss. Most importantly, trait anxiety was positively correlated with this behavioral bias. Trait anxiety was also positively correlated with amygdala-based "emotional" system activation and its coupling with the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) when decisions were consistent with the framing effect, but negatively correlated with the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC)-based "analytic" system activation and its connectivity to the vmPFC when decisions ran counter to the framing effect. Our findings suggest that trait anxiety is not associated with subjective risk preference but an evaluative bias of emotional information in decision making, underpinned by a hyperactive emotional system and a hypoactive analytic system in the brain.

Stress has profound impacts on physiology, the brain, cognition and behaviour. In response to stress, the brain initiates several neuromodulatory and endocrine systems. This leads to the release of stress-sensitive mediators, including neuromodulators, hormones and neuropeptides, which in turn feed back on the brain and thus alters cognition and behaviour. As the progress of sophisticated cognitive neuroimaging techniques, cognitive neuroscientists have begun to elucidate the psychological and neural mechanisms underlying detrimental and beneficial effects of stress on emotion, cognition and behaviour in the human brain. Stress-related neuromodulations occur at various stages of information processing, from the initial vigilance, attention, executive functions, learning and memory, and emotion. We reviewed recent advances in cognitive neuroscience of stress and proposed a multidimensional model of stress for better understanding how stress-sensitive neuromodulatory and endocrine systems interplay to impact the brain, cognition and behaviour in humans.

The embodied view of language processing holds that language comprehension involves the recruitment of sensorimotor information, as evidenced by the somatotopic representation of action verbs in the motor system. However, this review has not yet been examined in logographic scripts such as Chinese, in which action verbs can provide explicit linguistic cues to the effectors (arm, leg, mouth) that conduct the action (hit, jump, drink). We compared the somatotopic representation of Chinese verbs that contain such effector cues and those that do not. The results showed that uncued verbs elicited similar somatotopic representation in the motor and premotor cortex as found in alphabetic scripts. However, effector-cued verbs demonstrated an inverse somatotopic pattern by showing reduced activation in corresponding motor areas, despite that effector-cued verbs actually are rated higher in imageability than uncued verbs. Our results support the universality of somatotopic representation of action verbs in the motor system.

Previously we reported that priming of visual motion perception is reduced in older adults compared to younger adults (Jiang, Greenwood, & Parasuraman, 1999, Psychology and Aging, 14(4), 619; Jiang, Luo, & Parasuraman, 2002b, Neuropsychology, 16(2), 140). To examine the neural mechanisms underlying this age-related effect, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded during perceptual judgments of motion directions by younger and older adults in two experiments. When judging single-step motion, both younger and older adults evoked significantly larger ERP late positive component (LPC) responses to unambiguous motion compared to LPC responses elicited by ambiguous motion. In contrast, compared to the younger adults, the older adults evoked comparable but delayed ERP responses to single motion steps. In the second experiment the younger and older groups judged the directions of two successive motion-steps (either motion priming or motion reversals). Under short (200-400 ms) stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA), the difference between the ERP responses to priming and reversal conditions was significantly larger for the younger than for the older adults. This study provides the first electrophysiological evidence that brain aging leads to delayed processing of single motion direction and visual motion priming as early as 100 ms in the early visual cortex. Age-related changes in strength and temporal characteristics of neural responses in temporal-parietal regions were particularly pronounced in older adults when successive motion signals are placed closely in time, within 400 ms.

Objective: To explore the satisfactory rate in patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) after cosmetic surgery., Methods: We designed a questionnaire to investigate the postoperative satisfactory rate in patients with BDD and without BDD., Results: There was significant difference in postoperative satisfactory rate between patients with BDD and without BDD., Conclusion: The patients with BDD have a lower satisfactory rate, which is even worse after repeated surgery.

Objective: To investigate if switch cost involved in shifting between neutral and emotional stimuli is reflected by ERPs correlates., Method: The subjects were 14 healthy right-handed college students (7 females, 7 males). Garavan's (1998) task paradigm which was important in studying inner attention shifting was used. The subjects were asked to watch a stimulus sequence comprising Schematic line drawings of faces with neutral and emotional expressions, and make counts of them (neutral faces or emotional faces). EEG signals were recorded at 64 sites., Result: 1) Switching between stimuli elicited slow responses, increased N2 amplitudes and reduced P300 amplitudes. 2) A negative component (Nd370) was found when ERP wave during non-switching trials was subtracted from that during switching trials, and it was found obviously at extensive parietal area. 3) Nd370 amplitude during switching from emotional stimuli to neutral ones was smaller than that during switching from neutral stimuli to emotional ones., Conclusion: Nd370 can be taken as an index of switch cost effect.

Objective: Based on the visual experimental paradigm "precue-target", the search range should be affected by different Chinese characters and the dynamic mechanisms of aging in the brain on the visual attention were investigated., Method: 16 young and 16 old subjects participated the experiment. Cue was comprised of three Chinese words "Large", or "Median" or "Small." The letter "T" was designed as the target stimulus. When the cue was the "large", "T" may appear within 3 circles. When the cue was the "median", "T" may appear within either the median and small circles. When the cue was small, the target "T" may appear only within the small circle., Result: The reaction time (RT) of the two groups of subjects became quick with the reduction of the cue size, while amplitudes of the P1 and N1 component of ERPs increased with the decrease of the cue scale. Old subjects showed longer RT than younger subjects did. The posterior P1 was enhanced significantly and the N1 was inhibited obviously in the old group. The P2 was manifested as significantly inhibitory effect not only in the amplitude but also in the abnormal and unstable waveform., Conclusion: The cognitive function of elderly subjects declined in the task of visual spatial attention. We demonstrated for the first time that the P2 was manifested as significantly inhibitory effect, which suggested that the age-related reduction could lead to dysfunction in the anterior scalp to visual spatial attention (voluntary attention).

Aim: To examine whether precuneus subserves the attentive control of finger movement or whether it mediates the movement preparation and motor inhibition., Methods: In the Preparation Stage, subjects were shown with a 5-number string in which each number stood for a key-pressing response, the number strings included a complex pattern (eg, 4-1-4-2-3), or a simple one (eg, 2-2-2-2-2), or a null one (ie, x-x-x-x-x). In the Execution Stage, five reaction signs were presented one by one and subjects were required to press the corresponding key to each sign sequentially (eg, in the 4-1-4-2-3 preparation example, subjects press key 4 to the first sign, press key 1 to the second sign, key 4 to the third sign and so on). For the null preparation pattern, five numbers, rather than the reaction signs, were shown at the same pace as in the other two conditions and subjects were to press the corresponding keys., Results: Left medial frontal gyrus (BA 6) and precentral gyrus (BA 6) were involved in both of the Preparation Stage and the Execution Stage, whereas left precuneus (BA 7) was activated only in the Execution Stage., Conclusion: Precuneus mediates the attentive control of finger movement, but not the movement preparation or motor inhibition.

Objective: To investigate the visual attention mechanisms of brain, the "cue-target" experimental paradigm was adopted, and the attended range was cued by different Chinese characters., Method: Sixteen healthy young participants (8 male and 8 female, 19-24 years old with an average of 21) served as the subjects. The stimulus sequence was "background-cue-target". The background was comprised of three homocentric white circles. Cue was the Chinese character " large", "median" and " small ". There were 8 capital English letters in each circle, which formed three homocentric circles. "T" was designed as the target stimulus. When the cue was large, the target "T" appeared within the three circles. When the cue was medium, "T" appeared within the medium and small circles. When the cue was small, the T maybe appeared only within the small circle., Result: The reaction time became short with the decrease of the cue scale, while P1 and N1 components amplitudes increased., Conclusion: These results not only provided the electrophysiological evidence for the spot light theory, but also indicated that the spot-light effect happened at the early period of the information processing.

Objective: To compare the cortical mechanisms associated with visual spatial attention directed by location cues and Chinese character cues., Method: Eleven healthy adults (mean age=19) with normal vision served as the subjects. In experiment I, the cue was a circle with black solid line. There were three cue sizes: small, medium and large. In experiment II, three black concentric circles were presented as background, their diameters were the same as the three cues used in experiment I. The cue was one of three Chinese characters small, medium or large respectively. The task of the subjects was to discriminate the target's orientation., Result: RT in experiment II was longer with short ISI. The anterosuperior N1 amplitude elicited by the cue in experiment II was larger than that in experiment I. The inferoposterior P1 latency in experiment II was longer than that in experiment I. Comparing the target evoked ERP, the inferoposterior P1 and N1, latency of experiment II was longer than that in experiment I, the inferoposterior P2 amplitude in experiment II was larger than that in experiment I., Conclusion: The processing of Chinese cue takes place at higher level functional brain regions compared to processing of location cue. The later requires more resource in the earlier stage of cue process and less in the subsequent stage of the task.

Objective. To observe features of early component N170 during face recognition. Method. Scalp distribution, amplitude, and latency of N170 was recorded during face recognition tasks in 16 normal subjects. Result. N170 was elicited by the face stimuli in only half of the subjects and the amplitude was modulated by cognitive tasks. Conclusion. N170 reflects not only face structure encoding unit but also direct visual processing unit. Whether N170 reflects the specialty in face recognition needs further study. The latency of N170 showed left hemisphere dominance and the amplitude showed right hemisphere dominance, indicating that it is not pure right hemisphere dominance in face recognition.

Objective. To compare the cortical mechanisms associated with the visual spatial attention directed by fixed location cues. Method. The subjects were 12 healthy right-handed young volunteers. The visual stimuli were presented with the sequence as: background-cue-target. The cue was a black circle varied in three different sizes randomly. The foci of the circles were always at the center of the screen. The task of the subjects was to search the target within the cue circle and discriminate its orientation. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded from 128 scalp sites. Result. The reaction time (RT) to the targets in the same location shortened when the cue size enlarged. The target evoked P1 and N1 components were not affected by the attentive region size, while the amplitudes of the inferoposterior P2 and anterosuperior N2 enlarged when the attentive region size enlarged. Conclusion. 1) The P1 and N1 components under visual attention were related to the spatial location processes mainly. 2) Cue-evoked P2 and N2 components were related to the size of attentive region. 3) The processes of spatial location information were earlier than attentive scale information, which supported the theory that spatial selection is a prerequisite for correct processes of visual object information.

Previously, Y. Jiang, P. Greenwood, and R. Parasuraman (1999) reported that priming of rotating three-dimensional visual objects is age sensitive. The current study investigated whether there is also an age-related difference in priming with simple two-dimensional (2-D) moving stimuli (i.e., whether a prime stimulus moving in a particular direction causes a subsequent ambiguous target stimulus to be seen moving in the same direction as the prime). In 2 experiments, younger and older adults judged the directions of moving sine-wave gratings. Groups differed neither in determining the direction of a single 2-D movement nor in detecting motion reversals in successively moving gratings. However, the older group showed a significant reduction in the extent of 2-D motion priming. The decrement in older adults for visual motion priming may reflect age-related changes in temporal processing in human visual cortex.
