Chronic pain is long-lasting pain that often persists during chronic diseases or after recovery from disease or injury. It often causes serious side effects, such as insomnia, anxiety, or depression which negatively impacts the patient's overall quality of life. Serotonin (5-HT) in the central nervous system (CNS) has been recognized as an important neurotransmitter and neuromodulator which regulates various physiological functions, such as pain sensation, cognition, and emotions-especially anxiety and depression. Its widespread and diverse receptors underlie the functional complexity of 5-HT in the CNS. Recent studies found that both chronic pain and anxiety are associated with synaptic plasticity in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), the insular cortex (IC), and the spinal cord. 5-HT exerts multiple modulations of synaptic transmission and plasticity in the ACC and the spinal cord, including activation, inhibition, and biphasic actions. In this review, we will discuss the multiple actions of the 5-HT system in both chronic pain and injury-related anxiety, and the synaptic mechanisms behind them. Temperature is closely associated with respiratory disease (RD) in children, but few studies have examined whether the relationship between ambient temperature and RD in children changed after the COVID-19 epidemic. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between temperature and RD in children after the COVID-19 epidemic in Guangzhou, China. We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to compare the relationship between temperature and RD among children in Guangzhou from 2018 to 2022. The results showed an S-shaped relationship between temperature and RD in the post-COVID-19 period with a reference minimum risk at a temperature of 21 °C and an increasing relative risk (RR) at extremely low temperature (ELT) and extremely high temperature (EHT). The highest RR associated with EHT was 1.935 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.314-2.850) at a lag of 0-14 days. The on-the-day lag effects were found to be strongest at the lag 0 day of EHT with a RR of 1.167 (95% CI: 1.021-1.334). Furthermore, each 1 °C increase in post-COVID-19 temperature increased the risk of RD by 8.2% (95% CI: 1.044-1.121). Our study provides evidence that the relationship between temperature and RD in children in Guangzhou changed after the COVID-19 epidemic, and high temperature is more likely to cause RD in children. Whether the nonthermal effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exist and how nonthermal RFR acts on the nervous system are unknown. An animal model of spatial memory impairment is established by exposing mice to 2856-MHz RFR in the range of thermal noise (≤1 °C). Glutamate release in the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) CA1 region is not significantly changed after radiofrequency exposure, whereas dopamine release is reduced. Importantly, RFR enhances glutamatergic CA1 pyramidal neuron calcium activity by nonthermal mechanisms, which recover to the basal level with RFR termination. Furthermore, suppressed dHPC dopamine release induced by radiofrequency exposure is due to decreased density of dopaminergic projections from the locus coeruleus to dHPC, and artificial activation of dopamine axon terminals or D1 receptors in dHPC CA1 improve memory damage in mice exposed to RFR. These findings indicate that nonthermal radiofrequency stimulation modulates ongoing neuronal activity and affects nervous system function at the neural circuit level., (© 2023 The Authors. This study established a model of mineral element homeostatic imbalance and examined the respiratory burst function of peripheral blood neutrophils and inflammatory and antioxidant indicators before and after the imbalance in sheep. The results showed that after an EDTA injection, the number of activated neutrophils in the peripheral blood was significantly higher than that in the control group ( p < 0.01). In addition, the serum IL-6 level was significantly increased ( p < 0.05) and matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) was inhibited ( p < 0.05), but returned to a normal level one week after the injection. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) levels were consistently higher after the injection and significantly higher than in the control group ( p < 0.05). CuZn-SOD, TNOS activity, serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels were significantly higher than before the injection ( p < 0.05). Combining the results of previous studies, the EDTA injection altered the metabolism and transcription of peripheral blood neutrophils. These changes enhance the respiratory burst function of neutrophils and alter the status of inflammatory and antioxidant indicators such as IL-6 and CuZn-SOD.

Pickering emulsions have received considerable attention for their stability and functionality. Environmentally responsive Pickering emulsions could be used as vehicles for oral administration. However, challenges still exist, such as nonbiocompatibility of emulsifier and mismatched response behavior in the gastrointestinal environment. In this study, a strategy was proposed that bioactive saponin glycyrrhizic acid (GA) was used as a pH-responsive substance to functionalize zein nanoparticles, and tannic acid (TA) was used as a primer for cross-linking GA and zein nanoparticles. The Pickering emulsions fabricated by zein/TA/GA nanoparticles (ZTGs) exhibited excellent stability at acid conditions while slowly demulsifying at neutral conditions, which can be further used as an intestine-targeted delivery system. Curcumin was encapsulated into ZTG-stabilized Pickering emulsions, and the encapsulation efficiency results suggested that the presence of GA coating remarkably facilitated the encapsulation of curcumin. An in vitro digestion study suggested that ZTGs provided protection for emulsions from pepsin hydrolysis and exhibited higher free fatty acid release as well as higher bioaccessibility of curcumin during simulated intestine digestion. This study provides an effective strategy to prepare pH-responsive Pickering emulsions for improving the oral bioaccessibility of hydrophobic nutraceuticals.

Developments of a drug delivery system (DDS) based on a natural supramolecular hydrogel have been of wide interest due to its biocompatibility, efficacy, and adjustable performance. However, a simple and efficient design of functional hydrogel DDS based on the templated interplay of gelator and model drug is still a challenge. In this work, natural glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) gel was selected as a carrier to encapsulate the model drug pyrazinamide (PZA). It was found that the carboxyl-amide interaction at the interface of gel-drug achieved polymorph control, stabilization, and pH-responsive release. Powder X-ray diffraction confirmed that the metastable γ form of PZA was obtained from the GA gel. Spectral analysis and molecular dynamics simulation showed that the protonation at the amide-O promoted the discretization of PZA molecules in solution, resulting in the polymorphism. Furthermore, the gel-drug interplay increased the stability of the γ form significantly from 2 days to 3 months by in situ encapsulation in the GA gel. In vitro release study indicated that the GA gel achieved targeted control release of PZA due to the pH-responsiveness property of GA. This work provides a promising option for hydrogel-based DDS design combined with polymorph control and stabilization.

For the X -cube prism three-charge-coupled-device (3CCD) camera, the spectra of the designed dichroic films in the X -cube prism shift with changes in the angle of incident light, producing non-uniformity of color on the image plane. We considered the influence of the incident angle on color performance in filter design and directly optimized the thin film to improve color consistency. An optical model was constructed to calculate the distribution of camera spectral sensitivity and independently correct the non-uniform color on the image plane. Results showed that the optimization and correction methods could significantly improve the color performance of the X -cube prism 3CCD camera.

The global prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing annually, and previous research reports on the relationship between exposure to air pollutants and GDM are not completely consistent. We investigated the association between air pollutant exposure and GDM in pregnant women in a retrospective cohort study in Guangzhou. We found that in the first trimester, exposure to PM 2.5 and CO showed a significant association with GDM. In the second trimester, exposure to PM 10 was significantly associated with GDM. In the third trimester, exposure to PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , SO 2 , and CO at IQR4 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.271, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.179-1.370; OR = 1.283, 95% CI: 1.191-1.383; OR = 1.230, 95% CI: 1.145-1.322; OR = 1.408, 95% CI: 1.303-1.522; OR = 1.150, 95% CI: 1.067-1.240, respectively) compared with IQR1 was positively associated with GDM. However, exposure to NO 2 was negatively associated with GDM in the first and second trimesters, and O 3 was negatively associated with GDM in the second and third trimesters. We found that the correlation between air pollutants and GDM in different trimesters of pregnancy was not completely consistent in this retrospective cohort study. Generally, in terms of electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction, single-atom catalysts show high selectivities yet low current densities whereas conventional nanoparticle catalysts exhibit relatively high current densities but low selectivities. This work combines the advantages of the two classes of catalysts by constructing a Ni-Gd-N-doped carbon black electrocatalyst within which Ni I active sites are exposed outside the carbon layers and Ni nanoparticles are encapsulated inside the carbon layers. The Gd atoms can not only influence the local electron densities of Ni 3d orbitals, thus strengthening the electronic activity, but also tailor the sizes of the Ni nanoparticles, thereby minimizing the activity toward hydrogen evolution. Accordingly, this electrocatalyst yields both a high CO faradaic efficiency (97 %) and a large current density (308 mA cm -2 ), alongside an outstanding stability (100 h)., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) has poor early diagnosis rates due to its insidious onset. Since human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) is highly expressed in patients with PC, we assessed whether serum HE4 could be a marker for the detection 3 of PC., Method: : Between May 2017 and October 2018, 127 patients with PC were recruited for the study along with 108 healthy controls who underwent health examinations. Serum HE4 concentrations were determined together with levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigens (CA) 242 (CA242), CA19-9, CA15-3, and CA72-4 by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) or chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA). Correlations between these biomarkers were assessed., Results: : Serum levels of all six biomarkers were higher in patients with PC than in controls (P < 0.05). No correlation was observed between the serum levels of HE4 and the five other tumor markers, although there were strongly significant positive correlations between CA19-9 and CA15-3, and between CA242 and CA72-4. The lack of correlation indicates that HE4 has independent value in the diagnosis of PC. The combined assessment of serum HE4 levels and the other tumor markers improved the sensitivity of diagnosis. In particular, HE4 combined with CA19-9 performed significantly better than HE4 alone, or CA19-9 combined with the other markers. The HE4/CA19-9 combination resulted in 94.49% sensitivity and 99.07% specificity (95% confidence interval: 96.9-100)., Conclusion: : HE4 is a biomarker associated with PC with a high specificity , either used alone, or evaluated with other biomarkers together improving the detection of PC. Catalytic ozonation of methyl mercaptan (CH 3 SH) can effectively control this unbearable odorous sulfur-containing volatile organic compound (S-VOC). The construction of an electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) coordination structure to maximize the number of active sites and increase the intrinsic activity of active sites is an effective means to improve catalytic performance. In this work, the abundant Si-OH groups on PSBA-15 (SBA-15 before calcination) were used to anchor Mn to form a Si-O-Mn-based EMSI coordination structure. Detailed characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal that the strong EMSI effect significantly adjusts and stabilizes the electronic structure of Mn 3d states, resulting in an electron-rich center on the Si-O-Mn bond to promote the specific adsorption/activation of ozone (O 3 ) and an electron-poor center on the (Si-O-)Mn-O bond to adsorb a large amount of CH 3 SH accompanied by its own oxidative degradation. In situ Raman and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses identify that catalytic ozonation over 3.0Mn-PSBA generates atomic oxygen species (AOS/*O) and reactive oxygen species (ROS/ • O 2 - ) to achieve efficient decomposition of CH 3 SH into CO 2 /SO 4 2- . Furthermore, the electrons obtained from CH 3 SH in electron-poor centers are transferred to maintain the redox cycle of Mn 2+/3+ → Mn 4+ → Mn 2+/3+ through the internal bond bridge, thus accomplishing the efficient and stable degradation of CH 3 SH prolonged to 180 min. Therefore, the rational design of catalysts with abundant active sites and optimized inherent activity via the EMSI effect can provide significant potential to improve catalytic performance and eliminate odorous gases.

The bacterial diversity of salted mackerel "one-night courtyard" at soft frozen area (-7℃-0℃) storage was studied. The fish samples at 0, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days were analysis for bacterial structure using high-throughput sequencing technologies (HTS) and biogenic amines using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The analysis results of HTS showed that the dominant bacteria species was varied gradually following with storage time. On the 0th, 21st, and 28th days of storage, dominant Vibrionaceae was accounting for 71.70%, 59.16%, and 70.68% of the total sequences analyzed, respectively. On the 14th and 35th days, Shewanellaceae was the dominant bacterial, accounting for 87.53% and 70.95% of the total sequences analyzed, respectively. In addition, 21st and 28th days, an abundance of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) was top. The dominant bacterial of Proteobacteria , Firmicutes , was producer of biogenic amines. Furthermore, the analysis results of HPLC shown the total biogenic amines of maximum amount 363.01 mg/kg in the sample of HY.14 lower than 1000 mg/kg of the FDA regulation. The range ability of cadaverine was obvious following with the storage time. Cadaverine was 87.36 mg/kg on the 0th day, and it was maximum amount of 276.89 mg/kg on the 14th days. Putrescine was 20 mg/kg on the 0th day and maximum amount of 55.04 mg/kg on the 28thdays of storage. The tyramine was smallest amount of production, and the largest amount was 38.99 mg/kg on 28th, and the smallest amount was 11.97 mg/kg on 35th. Nevertheless, the maximum amount of histamine was 55.04 mg/kg on the 0th day and about 23.14 mg/kg of histamine was little change from 14th to 35th days of storage. Dominant bacteria affect the change of biogenic amines. Constructing catalysts with electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) is promising for catalytic reactions. Herein, graphene-supported positively charged (Pt 2+ /Pt 4+ ) atomically dispersed Pt catalysts (AD-Pt-G) with Pt x C 3 ( x = 1, 2, and 4)-based EMSI coordination structures are achieved for boosting the catalytic ozonation for odorous CH 3 SH removal. A CH 3 SH removal efficiency of 91.5% can be obtained during catalytic ozonation using optimum 0.5AD-Pt-G within 12 h under a gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 mL h -1 g -1 , whereas that of pure graphene is 40.4%. Proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy/Raman, and electron spin resonance verify that the Pt x C 3 coordination structure with atomic Pt 2+ sites on AD-Pt-G can activate O 2 to generate peroxide species (*O 2 ) for partial oxidation of CH 3 SH during the adsorption period and trigger O 3 into surface atomic oxygen (*O ad ), *O 2 , and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) to accomplish a stable, high-efficiency, and deeper oxidation of CH 3 SH during the catalytic ozonation stage. Moreover, the results of XPS and DFT calculation imply the occurrence of Pt 2+ → Pt 4+ → Pt 2+ recirculation on Pt x C 3 for AD-Pt-G to maintain the continuous catalytic ozonation for 12 h, i.e., Pt 2+ species devote electrons in 5d-orbitals to activate O 3 , while Pt 4+ species can be reduced back to Pt 2+ via capturing electrons from CH 3 SH. This study can provide novel insights into the development of atomically dispersed Pt catalysts with a strong EMSI effect to realize excellent catalytic ozonation for air purification.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a real local oscillator (LO) has been extensively studied recently due to its security and simplicity. In this paper, we propose a novel implementation of a high-key-rate CVQKD with a real LO. Particularly, with the help of the simultaneously generated reference pulse, the phase drift of the signal is tracked in real time and then compensated. By utilizing the time and polarization multiplexing techniques to isolate the reference pulse and controlling the intensity of it, not only the contamination from it is suppressed, but also a high accuracy of the phase compensation can be guaranteed. Besides, we employ homodyne detection on the signal to ensure the high quantum efficiency and heterodyne detection on the reference pulse to acquire the complete phase information of it. In order to suppress the excess noise, a theoretical noise model for our scheme is established. According to this model, the impact of the modulation variance and the intensity of the reference pulse are both analysed theoretically and then optimized according to the experimental data. By measuring the excess noise in the 25km optical fiber transmission system, a 3.14Mbps key rate in the asymptotic regime proves to be achievable. This work verifies the feasibility of the high-key-rate CVQKD with a real LO within the metropolitan area.

WNT5A is one of the most highly investigated non-canonical Wnt ligands and is involved in the embryonic heart development, especially in formation of the cardiac conotruncal region by regulating the migration and differentiation of cardiac neural crest (CNC) and second heart field (SHF) cells. No study to date has comprehensively characterized the WNT5A regulatory variants in patients with congenital heart malformations (CHMs). The association between regulatory variants of the WNT5A gene and CHMs was examined in case-control association study in 1,210 CHMs and 798 controls. Individuals carrying a homozygous genotype CC (rs524153) or GG (rs504849) had a similarly reduced risk of conotruncal malformations. The homozygous genotypes (CC for rs524153 and GG for rs504849) were associated with a lower WNT5A transcriptional level compared with the transcriptional level of those with wild-type genotypes. Further functional analysis revealed that an additional upstream single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) rs371954924 (-5244GCCA > CC) in a linkage disequilibrium (LD) block with the above genotyped SNPs decreased WNT5A expression through the attenuated binding affinity with the transcription factor SOX9. This is the first demonstration that genetic variants in the regulatory regions of WNT5A play a vital role in sporadic conotruncal malformations susceptibility through the changeable expression of the WNT5A gene.

We report the first continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) experiment to enable the creation of 1 Mbps secure key rate over 25 km standard telecom fiber in a coarse wavelength division multiplexers (CWDM) environment. The result is achieved with two major technological advances: the use of a 1 GHz shot-noise-limited homodyne detector and the implementation of a 50 MHz clock system. The excess noise due to noise photons from local oscillator and classical data channels in CWDM is controlled effectively. We note that the experimental verification of high-bit-rate CVQKD in the multiplexing environment is a significant step closer toward large-scale deployment in fiber networks.

We present a method of achieving a wide-angle, lightweight, optical see-through, distortion-free head-mounted display (HMD) by using two similar ellipsoids. An HMD that achieves a single channel field-of-view (FOV) of 120°×120° with a 6 mm eye box and a total binocular FOV of 160°×120° with an 80° field overlap is designed as an example. This method can solve the complex tiling problem and the distortion problem of other catadioptric structures. This structure is used to offset distortion and correct aberrations.

We present a novel optical configuration of a phase-shifting interferometer for high-accuracy figure metrology of large dioptric convex spherical surfaces. The conformation and design considerations according to measurement accuracy, practicability, and system errors analysis are described. More in detail, we show the design principle and methods for the crucial parts. Some are expounded upon with examples for thorough understanding. The measurement procedures and the alignment approaches are also described. Finally, a verification experiment is further presented to verify our theoretical design. This system gives full-aperture and high-precision surface testing while maintaining relatively low cost and convenient operation.

Objective: Soil microorganisms play an important role in the vegetable soil ecosystem. Through 16S rRNA gene cloning library technology to analysis the composition of bacteria community structure in the typical vegetable soil. To revealed the microbial diversity in the typical vegetable soil, and laid the foundation for the relationship between land-use changed and the ecological environment., Methods: Total microbial DNA was directly extracted from a typical vegetable soil of Beijing and Shandong province. The clone library of 16S ribosomal RNA genes was amplified using PCR with universal bacterial primer sets. The PCR products were then subcloned into pGEM-T vector. Each unique restriction fragment polymorphism pattern, created by using two restriction endonucleases (Hinf I and Hae III), was designated as an operational taxonomic unit (OTU). Amplified DNA was used for diversity analysis., Results: Constructed bacterial phylogenetic trees of the samples revealed the gamma-proteobacteria, beta-proteobacteria and alpha-proteobacteria groups were dominant in both clone libraries. Bacterial species composition from Beijing and Shandong province included 124 OTUs and 92 OTUs, respectively., Conclusion: The dominant species of bacteria populations are proteobacteria in the typical vegetable soil of Beijing and Shandong areas. But bacterial diversity in the two typical vegetable soil samples was reduced. This phenomenon may be directly related to continuous cultivation for many years and plant a single vegetable species. At the same time, this phenomenon may also be an important reason to cause vegetable soil diseases widespread occurred and soil degradation.
