Abstract

AbstractObjectiveChitosan (CS) is currently used as a hemostatic agent in emergencies and in military settings. However, its application is limited owing to its poor hydrophilia at neutral pH. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is an important, water-soluble derivative of CS. In this study, we prepared CS and CMCS microspheres (CSMs and CMCSMs, respectively) and evaluated their hemostatic effect.MethodsTo prepare the microspheres of various sizes, we used the emulsion cross-linking technique. CMCSMs were also loaded with etamsylate (DIC). Clotting time in vitro and in a hepatic injury model was examined to evaluate the hemostatic effect.ResultsCMCSMs swelled more and clotted faster than did CSMs. CMCSMs loaded with DIC had no effect on hemostasis.ConclusionsBoth increasing material hydrophilicity and expanding the contact area promoted clotting, whereas chemical cross-linking hampered it because of decreased swelling. Abstract

Solid carbon source (SCS)-based denitrification is a promising technique for nitrogen removal from sewage. However, a sustainable and effective supply of carbon sources, crucial to denitrification performance, has always been challenging. This study developed four synthetic SCSs: biochar (BC), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), PHBV loaded on biochar (BCP), and PHBV loaded on biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (BCPF), to examine their denitrification efficiency enhancement. Insufficient carbon sources caused low nitrate removal (<45%) in the BC reactor during the entire experiment. At the biofilm formation stage (influent nitrate: 40 mg L-1), the relatively higher nitrate removal in biochar-based SCS reactors than in the P reactor in the first 4 h indicated that the biochar's rapid release of carbon sources played a priming role in denitrification. Then, the subsequent sharp decrease in nitrate removal revealed the biochar's unsustainable release of carbon sources for the denitrifiers. Similar to the P reactor, the nitrate removal in BCP and BCPF reactors gradually increased after 12 h until the 48 h mark, where the high nitrate removal efficiency was stabilized (P: 79.93%−93.74%, BCP: 86.90%−100%, and BCPF: 91.68%−100%), except in the BC reactor. Evidently, the decomposed products from PHBV provided sustainable carbon sources for the denitrifiers. Compared with the P reactor in the continuous running stage, BCP and (especially) BCPF reactors exhibited excellent resistance to load impact. Here, PHBV supplied sustainable carbon sources and electron donors for denitrification, while nZVI served as extra electron donors. The biochar dominantly provided habitats for denitrifiers and functioned as an electron mediator. Abstract

This work presents a sensitive voltammetric method for determination of curcumin by using a electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) in 100 mM KCl-10 mM sodium phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.40). The electrochemical behaviors of curcumin at ERGO/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, suggesting that the ERGO/GCE exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards curcumin, compared with bare GCE and GO/GCE electrodes. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin at the ERGO/GCE were also investigated and discussed systematically. Under physiological condition, the modified electrode showed linear voltammetric response from 0.2 μM to 60.0 μM for curcumin, with the detection limit of 0.1 μm. This work demonstrates that the graphene-modified electrode is a promising strategy for electrochemical determination of biological important phenolic compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work presents a sensitive voltammetric method for determination of folic acid by adsorbing methylene blue onto electrodeposited reduced graphene oxide film modified glassy carbon electrode (MB/ERGO/GCE) in 100 mM KCl-10 mM sodium phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.40). The surface morphology of the MB/ERGO/GCE modified electrode was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, displays that both MB and ERGO distributed homogeneously on the surface of GCE. The MB/ERGO/GCE modified electrode shows more favorable electron transfer kinetics for potassium ferricyanide and potassium ferrocyanide probe molecules, which are important electroactive compounds, compared with bare GCE, MB/GCE, and ERGO/GCE. The electrochemical behaviors of folic acid at MB/ERGO/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, suggesting that the modified electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards folic acid compared with other electrodes. Under physiological condition, the MB/ERGO/GCE modified electrode showed a linear voltammetric response from 4.0 μM to 167 μM for folic acid, and with the detection limit of 0.5 μM (S/N=3). The stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability of the modified electrode were examined. The developed method has been successfully applied to determination of FA in tablets with a satisfactory recovery from 96 % to 100 %. The work demonstrated that the electroactive MB adsorbing onto graphene modified electrode showed an enhanced electron transfer property and a high resolution capacity to FA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Synthetic dimension opens new horizons in quantum physics and topological photonics by enabling new dimensions for field and particle manipulations. The most appealing property of the photonic synthetic dimension is its ability to emulate high-dimensional optical behavior in a unitary physical system. Here we show that the photonic synthetic dimension can transform technical problems in photonic systems between dimensionalities, providing unexpected solutions to technical problems that are otherwise challenging. Specifically, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a fully reconfigurable photonic Galton board (PGB) in the temporal synthetic dimension, in which the temporal high-speed challenge is translated into a spatial fiber-optic length matching problem, leading to the generation of tera-sample-per-second arbitrary waveforms with ultimate flexibility. In the experiments, an arbitrary waveform with a widely tunable sampling rate, ranging from 10.42 GSa/s to a record high of 1.64 TSa/s, is demonstrated. The concept of dimension conversion offers possible solutions to various physical dimension-related problems, such as super-resolution imaging, high-resolution spectroscopy, and high-precision time measurement. Synthetic dimensions have drawn a lot of attention in photonics recently, where many physical phenomena have been explored. This work, on the other hand, utilizes the temporal synthetic dimension to solve a technical problem that is otherwise challenging, and showcases the generation of tera-sample-per-second arbitrary waveforms with extreme flexibility, which offers new possible solutions in many application-related problems.
