Objectives: Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI) is an acquired disorder with multiple recurrent symptoms, which is associated with diverse environmental factors that are tolerated by the majority of people. IEI is an illness of uncertain aetiology, making it difficult to treat using conventional medicine. Therefore, there is a need for novel therapies to control the symptoms of IEI. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and impact of aromatherapy massage for individuals with IEI., Design: Non-blinded crossover trial., Setting: IEI patients who attended a clinic in Sapporo city were recruited, and sixteen patients were enrolled. Participants were clinically examined by an experienced medical doctor and met the criteria included in the working definition of IEI disorder., Interventions: During the active period, participants received four one-hour aromatherapy massage sessions every two weeks. During the control period, the participants did not receive any massages., Main Outcome Measurements: Scores on the IEI-scales trigger checklist, symptoms, life impact, and the State Anxiety Inventory were assessed before and after each period. Short-term mood enhancement was evaluated using the Profiles of Mood Status (POMS) before and after sessions., Results: Due to period effects, evaluation of the results had to be restricted to the first period, and the result showed no effect of intervention. All six sub-scales of the POMS improved after each session (mean score differences: 4.89-1.33, P<0.05)., Conclusions: Aromatherapy was well tolerated by subjects with IEI; however, aromatherapy, as applied in this study, did not suggest any specific effects on IEI condition., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. To facilitate urine sample preparation prior to head-space gas-chromatographic (HS-GC) analysis. Urine samples containing one of the five solvents (acetone, methanol, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and toluene) at the levels of biological exposure limits were aspirated into a vacuum tube via holder, a device commercially available for venous blood collection (the vacuum tube method). The urine sample, 5 ml, was quantitatively transferred to a 20-ml head-space vial prior to HS-GC analysis. The loaded tubes were stored at +4 ℃ in dark for up to 3 d. The vacuum tube method facilitated on-site procedures of urine sample preparation for HS-GC with no significant loss of solvents in the sample and no need of skilled hands, whereas on-site sample preparation time was significantly reduced. Furthermore, no loss of solvents was detected during the 3-d storage, irrespective of hydrophilic (acetone) or lipophilic solvent (toluene). In a pilot application, high performance of the vacuum tube method in sealing a sample in an air-tight space succeeded to confirm that no solvent will be lost when sealing is completed within 5 min after urine voiding, and that the allowance time is as long as 30 min in case of toluene in urine. The use of the holder-vacuum tube device not only saves hands for transfer of the sample to air-tight space, but facilitates sample storage prior to HS-GC analysis.

Objectives: In order to measure occupational exposure concentrations of ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), we developed a diffusive sampling method for monitoring ETBE and performed an ETBE exposure assessment., Methods: The applicability of diffusive samplers was examined by exposing the samplers to ETBE vapor in test chambers. The personal exposure levels of workers and airborne concentrations were measured at 4 gas stations., Results: The ETBE sampling rate for the diffusive samplers (VOC-SD, Sigma-Aldrich Japan) was 25.04 ml/min (25°C). Compared with the active sampling method, the diffusive samplers could be used for short-term measurements and in environments containing a mixture of organic solvents. The geometric mean (GM) of TWA-8h ETBE was 0.08 ppm (0.02-0.28 ppm) in 28 gas station workers and 0.04 ppm (0.01-0.21 ppm) in 2 gasoline tanker truck drivers. With regard to ETBE airborne concentrations, the GM was 4.12 ppm (0.93-8.71 ppm) at the handles of hanging pumps but dropped to less than 0.01 ppm (less than 0.01-0.01 ppm) at the side of a public road., Conclusion: The diffusive sampling method can be used for the measurement of occupational ETBE exposure. The threshold limit of TLV-TWA 5 ppm recommended by the ACGIH was not exceeded in any of the workers in this study.

Microorganisms are known to produce a range of volatile organic compounds, so-called microbial VOC (MVOC). Chamber studies where humans were exposed to MVOC addressed the acute effects of objective and/or subjective signs of mucosal irritation. However, the effect of MVOC on inhabitants due to household exposure is still unclear. The purpose of this epidemiological study was to measure indoor MVOC levels in single family homes and to evaluate the relationship between exposure to them and sick building syndrome (SBS). All inhabitants of the dwellings were given a self-administered questionnaire with standardized questions to assess their symptoms. Air samples were collected and the concentrations of eight selected compounds in indoor air were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry - selective ion monitoring mode (GC/MS-SIM). The most frequently detected MVOC was 1-pentanol at a detection rate of 78.6% and geometric mean of 0.60 microg/m(3). Among 620 participants, 120 (19.4%) reported one or more mucous symptoms; irritation of the eyes, nose, airway, or coughing every week (weekly symptoms), and 30 (4.8%) reported that the symptoms were home-related (home-related symptoms). Weekly symptoms were not associated with any of MVOC, whereas significant associations between home-related mucous symptoms and 1-octen-3-ol (per log(10)-unit: odds ratio (OR) 5.6, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.1 to 14.8) and 2-pentanol (per log(10)-unit: OR 2.3, 95% CI: 1.0 to 4.9) were obtained after adjustment for gender, age, and smoking. Associations between home-related symptoms and 1-octen-3-ol remained after mutual adjustment. However, concentrations of the selected compounds in indoors were lower than the estimated safety level in animal studies. Thus, the statistically significant association between 1-octen-3-ol may be due to a direct effect of the compounds or the associations may be being associated with other offending compounds. To investigate if it is appropriate to apply urine density correction when a urine sample is dense or dilute. Data on hippuric acid (HA-U), toluene (Tol-U), creatinine (CR) and specific gravity (SG) in end-of-shift urine samples and exposure to air-borne toluene were cited from previous publications. In practice, 837 cases were available, and they were classified into dense, intermediate and dilute groups taking 0.3 and 3.0 g/l of CR and 1.010 and 1.030 of SG as cut-off points. Lines of regression of HA-U and Tol-U (as observed, CR-corrected or SG-corrected) with air-borne toluene were calculated for each density groups, and correlation coefficients (CCs) were compared. The dense groups gave CCs similar to those of the intermediate groups. Dilute versus intermediate group comparison also gave promising results. These conclusions were however based primarily on the findings with observed values, because the numbers of cases in the dilute or dense group were limited when CR- or SG-correction was applied. Literature survey showed that urine density correction does not always improve the correlation between solvents in air and exposure makers in urine. It was concluded that no correction for urine density may be necessary in evaluating HA-U and Tol-U in dense (and probably also dilute) urine samples as markers of occupational toluene exposure. Just in case when correction for urine density is desired for any reason, SG-correction may be recommended.

This study aimed to clarify the role of blood lead level (Pb-B) as one of the cardiovascular risk factors. To evaluate the cardiovascular risk the second derivative finger photoplethysmogram (SDPTG) was used. The subjects comprised of 420 male bus drivers in Thailand. The subjects' age ranged from 20 to 60 yr. Mean age (+/- standard deviation) were 41.6 (+/- 7.7) yr. Mean working years was 8.8 (+/- 6.8) yr. Pb-B ranged from 2.5 to 16.2 microg/dl with the mean Pb-B of 6.3 (+/- 2.2) microg/dl. The mean of aging index of SDPTG (SDPTG-AI) were -0.50 (+/- 0.30). The SDPTG-AI increases with age, Pb-B, smoking and alcohol consumption. There was significant correlation between Pb-B and SDPTG-AI after controlling for age, body mass index and lifestyle factors. These results suggest that Pb-B is possibly an independent cardiovascular risk factor for bus drivers exposed to lower level of lead.

This paper discusses the characteristics of psychotherapy for pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) in the context of the curative effects of the movement of images. The 'autistic spectrum' is widened here and includes not only PDD, but also ADHD. The main common characteristic in these two sets of disorders seems to be the lack of a subject, which manifests itself as the absence of awareness of otherness and difficulties with boundaries and language. In these cases a normal psychotherapy is ineffective as it presupposes an established subject. However a psychotherapeutic approach with these patients can contribute to the emergence of a subject. In severe cases the process of union and separation which is enacted either in the therapeutic relationship or in symbolic play leads to the birth of a subject, and of language. In milder cases, such as ADHD, the moments of separation and confrontation with the therapist suffice. I will discuss a case of my own with Asperger's syndrome in which union and separation in the play therapy occurred simultaneously. This indicates that union and separation are not a consecutive process, but are simultaneous and lead to dialectical movement. However, in neurotic cases with an established subjectivity the symbolic meaning of image plays a central role. This corresponds to Jung's understanding of image in alchemy.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate whether styrene can affect the vibration perception threshold (VPT) and to examine the dose-effect relationship at current and past styrene exposure levels., Methods: VPT was examined using a Vibrometer (TM-31A) for 67 subjects exposed to styrene in a fiberglass reinforced plastic boat plant and 151 non-exposed subjects. We selected 67 age-matched controls out of the non-exposed subjects for the analyses. End shift urinary metabolites of styrene were measured for evaluation of the dose-effect relationship for the past eight years and at the time of VPT measurement. The current exposure level was expressed by the end shift urinary mandelic acid (MA) and phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA) levels. Cumulative exposure index (CEI) were calculated based on the exposure frequency and urinary MA concentrations measured for the past eight years., Results: The VPT of the exposed group was higher than that of non-exposed group. Multiple regression analysis revealed that past maximum exposure level and age were significant factors explaining the variation of VPT. Dose-effect relationship was recognized in upper limbs but not in lower limbs among exposure groups. When the exposed group was divided into high- and low-level groups for the past maximum exposure level by the cutoff point of MA 0.83 g/g cr (equivalent to 50 ppm in air) and compared to the control group, we found significant differences in the VPT in upper limbs, between the high-level exposed group and control group, and in lower limbs, between both of the high- and low-level exposed groups and the control group., Conclusion: If the maximum concentration of styrene exposure exceeded 50ppm in the past, effects of exposure to styrene on the VPT are likely to persist.

This study was initiated to evaluate o-cresol and benzylmercapturic acid in urine in comparison with other biomarkers, as tools to estimate the intensity of occupational exposure to toluene at low levels. In total, 108 solvent exposed workers (engaged in tape production) and 17 non-exposed controls (all men) participated in the study. The surveys were conducted in the second half of working weeks. Diffusive sampling was conducted to measure 8-h time-weighted average intensity of occupational exposure to toluene. Blood and urine samples were collected at the end of a working shift. Blood samples were subjected to analysis for toluene (Tol-B), and urine samples were analyzed for benzyl alcohol (BeOH-U), benzylmercapturic acid (BMA-U), o-cresol (o-CR-U), hippuric acid (HA-U) and toluene (Tol-U) by the methods previously described. The toluene concentrations in workplaces were low in general, with a geometric mean (GM) and the maximum concentration of 1.9 ppm and 8.8 ppm, respectively. The statistical analyses of the six biomarkers for correlation with air-borne toluene showed that both Tol-B and Tol-U gave a high correlation coefficient of 0.58 to 0.61 (p<0.01), whereas the coefficients for BeOH-U and BMA-U together with HA-U were all low (up to 0.22, depending on the correction for urine density) and statistically insignificant (p>0.10) in most cases. o-CR-U had an intermediary coefficient of 0.20 (p<0.05). Comparison with previous publications disclosed that BeOH-U, BMA-U and HA-U correlate with toluene in air when the exposure is intense (e.g., 50 ppm or above), but no longer proportional to air-borne toluene when the exposure is low, e.g., 2 ppm. Such appeared to be also the case for o-CR-U. In over-all evaluation, the validity of o-CR-U in monitoring occupational exposure to toluene at low levels (e.g., 2 ppm) appear to be limited, and BMA-U is not an appropriate biomarker. BeOH-U and HA-U are also inappropriate for this purpose. Only Tol-B and Tol-U may be employed to estimate toluene exposure at low levels.

This study was initiated to identify a marker of choice to monitor occupational exposure to toluene through quantitative evaluation of changes in correlation coefficients (CCs), taking advantage of a large database. Six known or proposed exposure markers in end-of-shift blood (B) and urine (U) were studied, i.e., toluene in blood (Tol-B) and benzyl alcohol, benzylmercapturic acid, o-cresol, hippuric acid and toluene in urine (BeOH-U, BMA-U, o-CR-U, HA-U, and Tol-U, respectively). To construct a database, data on 8-h time-weighted average intensity of occupational exposure to toluene and resulting levels of the six exposure markers in blood or urine were cited for 901 cases from previous four publications of this study group and combined with 146 new cases. In practice, 874 cases (all men) were available when extremely dilute or dense urine samples were excluded. The 874 cases were classified taking the upper limit (from 120 ppm to 1 ppm) of the toluene exposure concentration, and the CCs for the six markers with TWA toluene exposure intensity were calculated. For further evaluation, the 874 cases were divided into 10 per thousand in terms of TWA toluene exposures, and several 10 per thousand were combined so that sufficient numbers of cases were available for calculation of the CCs at various levels of toluene exposure. Perusal was made to know whether or not and which one of the six makers gave significant CC even at low level of toluene exposure. The CCs for BMA-U, o-CR-U and HA-U with TWA toluene exposure were well >0.7 when toluene exposure was intense (e.g., up to 60-100 ppm as the upper limit of the exposure range), but were reduced when the upper limit of toluene exposure was less than 50 ppm, and the CCs were as small as <==0.2 when the upper limit was about 10 ppm or less. In contrast, Tol-U and Tol-B were correlated with exposure to toluene down to the 0.4 when the cases in the 60th-100th per thousand were examined. The CCs for Tol-U and Tol-B were >0.3 also for cases in the 0th-60th or 30th-70th per thousand, whereas the CCs for other four markers were <0.3. In over-all evaluation, it was concluded that HA and o-CR are among the markers of choice to monitor occupational toluene exposure at high levels, and that only un-metabolized toluene in urine or in blood is recommended when toluene exposure level is low (e.g., 10 ppm or less). Toluene in urine may be preferred rather than that in blood due to practical reasons, such as non-invasiveness.

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to compare validity of various biomarkers of occupational exposure to toluene (Tol) at low levels. The focus was placed on the comparison of un-metabolized toluene in urine (Tol-U) and peripheral blood (Tol-B) with hippuric acid in urine (HA-U)., Methods: Surveys were conducted in 16 workplaces on the second half of working weeks, with participation of male solvent workers. Urine and peripheral blood samples were collected at the end of the shifts. After exclusion of cases with dense or diluted urine samples, 473 valid sets of samples were obtained for statistical evaluation. Time-weighted average exposure (for about 8-h) were monitored by diffusive sampling for toluene and other four solvents. Blood samples were subjected to the analyses for Tol-B, whereas urine samples were analyzed for HA-U and Tol-U., Results: The solvent exposures were low, i.e., a grand geometric mean (GM) Tol concentration was 1.6 ppm, and the GM for the SUM in the additiveness equation was 0.12. The correlation analyses of the biomarkers in urine and blood with Tol exposure showed that Tol-U and Tol-B were more closely [correlation coefficients (r) being 0.67 and 0.60, respectively] related than HA-U (r = 0.27). Results of receiver operator characteristic analyses were in agreement with the correlation analysis results., Conclusions: Taking the non-invasive nature of sampling together, Tol in the end-of-shift spot urine sample appears to be the marker of choice for biological monitoring of occupational exposure to Tol at low levels such as <2 ppm as a geometric mean.

Phenylglyoxylic acid (PhGA) and mandelic acid (MA) are two popular urinary markers of occupational exposure to styrene, but PhGA has been considered to be relatively unstable when urine samples are stored. This study was initiated to examine the stability of PhGA in urine under two storage conditions, i.e., at room temperature (at 25 degrees C) and in refrigeration (at 4 degrees C) for up to 14 days. The experiments showed that no substantial decrease was observed in either PhGA or MA even at room temperature within one day, but, depending on urine samples, a gradual decrease in PhGA took place both at 4 degrees C and more markedly at 25 degrees C when kept for a week. Further reduction was observed in two weeks even at 4 degrees C. No reduction was observed in MA up to two weeks both at 4 degrees C and at 25 degrees C. The observation on stability of MA and limited stability of PhGA (i.e., no significant decrease for 4 days when stored as refrigerated) was confirmed by a repeated experiment. Further analyses disclosed that PhGA when stored at 4 degrees C tended to be more unstable when urine samples were alkaline (e.g., at pH 8) rather than acidic (e.g., at pH 6 or below), but the trend varied subject to individual samples. Thus, the practical recommendation is that urine samples should be analyzed on the day of collection if all possible, or kept at 4 degrees C, or more preferably at -20 degrees C. Refrigeration will allow storage of up to 4 days without substantial decrease in either PhGA or MA.

Objectives: This study was initiated to make comparative evaluation of five proposed urinary markers of occupational exposure to toluene, i.e., benzyl alcohol, benzylmercapturic acid, omicron-cresol, hippuric acid and un-metabolized toluene., Methods: In practice, six plants in Japan were surveyed, and 122 Japanese workers (mostly printers; all men) together with 12 occupationally nonexposed control subjects (to be called controls; all men) agreed to participate in the study. Surveys were conducted in the second half of working weeks. Time-weighted average exposure (about 8 h) to toluene and other solvents were monitored by diffusive sampling. End-of-shift urine samples were collected and analyzed for the five markers by the methods previously described; simultaneous determination of omicron-cresol was possible by the method originally developed for benzyl alcohol analysis., Results: The toluene concentration in the six plants was such that the grand geometric mean (GM) for the 122 cases was 10.4 ppm with the maximum of 121 ppm. Other solvents coexposed included ethyl acetate (26 ppm as GM), methyl ethyl ketone (26 ppm), butyl acetate (1 ppm) and xylenes (1 ppm). By simple regression analysis, hippuric acid correlated most closely with toluene in air (r = 0.85 for non-corrected observed values) followed by un-metabolized toluene (r = 0.83) and o-cresol (r = 0.81). In a plant where toluene in air was low (i.e., 2 ppm as GM), however, un-metabolized toluene and benzylmercapturic acid in urine showed better correlation with air-borne toluene (r = 0.79 and 0.61, respectively) than hippuric acid (r = 0.12) or o-cresol (r = 0.17). Benzyl alcohol tended to increase only when toluene exposure was intense. Correction for creatinine concentration or specific gravity of urine did not improve the correlation in any case. Multiple regression analysis showed that solvents other than toluene did not affect the levels of omicron-cresol, hippuric acid or un-metabolized toluene. Levels of benzylmercapturic acid and un-metabolized toluene were below the limits of detection [limit of detections (LODs); 0.2 and 2 microg/l, respectively] in the urine from the control subjects., Conclusions: In over-all evaluation, hippuric acid, followed by un-metabolized toluene and omicron-cresol, is the marker of choice for occupational toluene exposure. When toluene exposure level is low (e.g., 2 ppm), un-metabolized toluene and benzylmercapturic acid in urine may be better indicators. Detection of un-metabolized toluene or benzylmercapturic acid in urine at the levels in excess of the LODs may be taken as a positive evidence of toluene exposure, because their levels in urine from the controls are below the LODs. The value of benzyl alcohol as an exposure marker should be limited.

This study aims to evaluate blood lead level (PbB) and blood pressure of bus drivers in Bangkok, Thailand, after the phasing out of lead in gasoline. The subjects comprised of 439 male bus drivers whose age ranged between 23 and 59 yr with the mean age of 42 +/- 8 yr. Average working experience was 10 +/- 7 yr. The mean of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 131 +/- 17 and 81 +/- 11 mmHg, respectively. PbB ranged from 2.5 to 16.2 microg/dl with the mean PbB of 6.3 microg/dl. Prevalence rate of systolic and diastolic hypertension among bus drivers were 23.0% and 18.2%, respectively. There were significant correlations between PbB and blood pressure both in systolic and diastolic blood pressure after controlling for age, BMI, alcohol consumption, smoking and physical exercise. However, the data on psycho-social factors which may affect on blood pressure of bus drivers were not available. Therefore, further study is needed to clarify the relationship between blood pressure and psycho-social stress among bus drivers in Bangkok. These findings suggested lead exposure at low PbB is related to increases in blood pressure.

Formaldehyde is a carcinogen to which humans are exposed daily, but few methods are available to quantify formaldehyde in biological samples. We developed a simple, sensitive and rapid technique for the quantification of formaldehyde in urine by derivatization with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine, using a headspace sampler coupled to a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. The detection limit was 1.08 microg/L. The overall recovery of formaldehyde spiked in urine was 99%. The concentration of formaldehyde in urine obtained from healthy volunteers ranged from 56.85 to 144.57 microg/L. This method can be used successfully to measure formaldehyde in urine.

Benzyl alcohol (BeOH) is a urinary metabolite of toluene, which has been seldom evaluated for biological monitoring of exposure to this popular solvent. The present study was initiated to develop a practical method for determination of BeOH in urine and to examine if this metabolite can be applied as a marker of occupational exposure to toluene. A practical gas-liquid chromatographic method was successfully developed in the present study with sensitivity low enough for the application (the limit of detection; 5 microg BeOH /l urine with CV=2.7%). Linearity was confirmed up to 10 mg BeOH/l, the highest concentration tested, and the reproducibility was also satisfactory with a coefficient of variation of 2.7% (n=10). A tentative application of the method in a small scale study with 45 male workers [exposed to toluene up to 130 ppm as an 8-h time-weighted average (8-h TWA)] showed that BeOH in the end-of-shift urine samples was proportional to the intensity of exposure to toluene. The calculated regression equation was Y=50+1.7X (r=0.80, p<0.01), where X was toluene in air (in ppm as 8-h TWA) and Y was BeOH in urine (in microg/l of end-of-shift urine). The levels of BeOH in the urine of the non-exposed was about 50 microg/l, and ingestion of benzoate as a preservative in soft drinks did not affect the BeOH level in urine. The findings as a whole suggest that BeOH is a promising candidate for biological monitoring of occupational exposure to toluene.

A polyphasic, culture-independent study was conducted to investigate the abundance and population structure of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in canal sediments receiving wastewater discharge. The abundance of AOB ranged from 0.2 to 1.9% and 1.6 to 5.7% of the total bacterial fraction by real-time PCR and immunofluorescence staining, respectively. Clone analysis and restriction endonuclease analysis revealed that the AOB communities influenced by the wastewater discharge were dominated by Nitrosomonas, were similar to each other, and were less diverse than the communities outside of the immediate discharge zone.

Modern consciousness is a cultural and historical achievement in the West and a developmental task for each person now. Modern consciousness consists in the emancipation from the power of community, animistic nature and the unconscious. It is connected with neurosis and psychotherapy because it has to do with inner conflicts. But today there is an increasing number of cases which are characterized by dissociation and acting out, without the feeling of conflicts. Consciousness seems to be changing toward a new conception which might be called 'postmodern consciousness'. The essence of postmodern consciousness is shown by interpreting two dreams internally. The first dream from a case of depersonalization indicates that it is not necessary to be entangled with the object. There is a different kind of coniunctio in the mode of seeing. The second dream from a case of dissociative disorder shows a world which has neither traces of pre-modern cosmology-high and low, here and the beyond-nor modern interiority. There is only surface and self-reflection without content. The discussion of dreams suggests that postmodern consciousness is not to be understood as premature and pathological. It is therapeutically important to refine and deepen postmodern consciousness.

Tokyo Bay, a eutrophic bay in Japan, receives nutrients from wastewater plants and other urban diffuse sources via river input. A transect was conducted along a line from the Arakawa River into Tokyo Bay to investigate the ecological relationship between the river outflow and the distribution, abundance and population structure of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Five surficial marine sediments were collected and analysed with polyphasic approaches. Heterogeneity and genetic diversity of beta-AOB populations were examined using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of 16S rRNA and amoA genes. A shift of the microbial community was detected in samples along the transect. Both 16S rRNA and amoA genes generated polymorphisms in the restriction profiles that were distinguishable at each sampling site. Two 16S rRNA gene libraries were constructed using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method to determine the major ammonia oxidizers maintaining high cellular rRNA content. Two major groups were observed in the Nitrosomonas lineage; no Nitrosospira were detected. The effort to isolate novel AOB was successful; the isolate dominated in the gene libraries. For quantitative analysis, a real-time PCR assay targeting the 16S rRNA gene was developed. The population sizes of beta-AOB ranged from 1.6 x 10(7) to 3.0 x 10(8) cells g(-1) in dry sediments, which corresponded to 0.1-1.1% of the total bacterial population. An immunofluorescence staining using anti-hydroxylamine oxidoreductase (HAO) antibody was also tested to obtain complementary data. The population sizes of ammonia oxidizers ranged between 2.4 x 10(8) and 1.2 x 10(9) cells g(-1) of dry sediments, which corresponded to 1.2-4.3% of the total bacterial fraction. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria cell numbers deduced by the two methods were correlated (R = 0.79, P < 0.01). In both methods, the number of AOB increased with the distance from the river mouth; ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were most numerous at B30, where the ammonium concentration in the porewater was markedly lower and the nitrite concentration was slightly higher than nearby sites. These results reveal spatial distribution and shifts in the population structure of AOB corresponding to nutrients and organic inputs from the river run-off and phytoplankton bloom.

The aim of this research was to clarify improvements in the occupational health management of small-scale enterprises by introducing the use of a checklist for organic solvents. We studied 25 small-scale enterprises producing lacquerware in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. We specifically designed a manual for checking the occupational health management that included a checklist for self-evaluation. The survey using the manual led us to find that the median of workers was 4. All workshops were equipped with local exhaust ventilators for spraying work. Overall recognition of a need for the occupational safety and health by managers was not particularly high. The need was found for producing a documented work standard, properly dealing with or controlling organic solvents, thus preventing workers from exposure to organic solvents. Eighteen small-scale enterprises answered yes to more than 50 percent of items on the checklist. The results of the checklist exercise revealed some problems in spraying workshops, such as no documented work standard, no inspection of tools or local exhaust ventilators before work, no prevention against exposure to organic solvents, and insufficient measures taken for occupational health education. The results in this research pointed out some need to improvements in the occupational health management.

Here we evaluate the influence of individual genetic polymorphisms of drug-metabolizing enzymes as well as body mass index (BMI) and lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption) on urinary metabolites after occupational exposure to styrene. Seventy-three workers exposed to styrene in a reinforced-plastics workplace were studied. The personal styrene exposure in the air and the urinary styrene metabolites mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid were measured. The subjects' genetic polymorphisms in the genes that encode the styrene-metabolizing enzymes CYP2E1, CYP2B6, EPHX1, GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 were determined. Neither genotype nor lifestyle significantly affected urinary metabolites. There was, however, an interaction between the CYP2E1 genotype and smoking. Among non-smokers, urinary styrene metabolites were significantly decreased in subjects with c1/c1 alleles of CYP2E1 as compared with those with the c1/c2 genotype. There was no significant difference in urinary metabolites among smokers. When the combined influence of the CYP2B6 genotype and the predicted activity of EPHX1 were examined, urinary metabolites in subjects with low enzyme activity were lower than in those with medium or high activity after high styrene exposure (>or=50 ppm). The results suggest that genetic susceptibility and lifestyle should be considered in biological monitoring of exposure to styrene.

There have been several epidemiological and experimental studies about styrene from the neuroendocrinological viewpoint. Some reported that styrene exposure affected the neuroendocrinological system and enhanced prolactin (PRL) secretion, but others have denied those effects. It was assumed that styrene exposure caused depletion of dopamine (DA), which is a PRL inhibitor, and that, in consequence, the PRL level increased. However, not only DA but also many other factors control PRL secretion. Therefore, the mechanism of hypersecretion of PRL has not yet been clearly elucidated. In addition, effects of styrene on the female reproductive system have been reported, but the susceptibility needs to be further studied. Therefore, to investigate what causes hypersecretion of PRL and how different the susceptibility is in males and females, we studied acute effects of styrene exposure on the neuroendocrinological system in male and female rats. Immediately after exposure to 150 ppm styrene vapor for 10 days (8 h/day), male and female rats were killed, and blood and brain samples were collected. The styrene concentration in blood, hormones such as PRL, growth hormone (GH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in plasma and neurotransmitters in various brain regions were measured. The styrene concentration in the blood of female rats was higher than that in male rats, and the PRL level was significantly increased in female exposed rats compared with controls. No significant change was observed in male rats. We did not observe any significant changes in DA, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or their metabolites. Because neurotransmitters were not affected in either male or female rats, the mechanism enhancing PRL secretion remains unclear. These results suggest that styrene exposure may cause hypersecretion of PRL and that the sensitivity to styrene exposure of the female may be higher than that of the male.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the workers occupationally exposed to a mixture of organic solvents and their visual functions. Here the visual functions included color vision (CV), visual contrast sensitivity (CS) and visual evoked potentials (VEP). Test subjects were 182 workers at 53 furniture factories in the same industrial area of Japan. As control, a group consisted of 96 workers without exposure to any organic solvent was also tested. Exposure assessments were made both by the environmental concentration and biological monitoring. CV and CS tests were carried out for all the subjects. VEP was measured for 21 exposed subjects who were considered to have impaired CV and CS. In the results, the color confusion index (CCI) values of the exposed subjects were significantly higher than that of the age-matched controls (P<0.01). Their CS values were significantly lower than those in the controls at spatial frequencies of 6 and 12 cycles per degree (cpd) (P<0.01 and <0.05, respectively). A significant correlation between the concentration of urinary methylhippuric acid and contrast sensitivity was found by a multiple regression analysis (P<0.05). CCI showed a negative correlation at all spatial frequencies of CS in a simple regression analysis, no abnormal data were found by the VEP test in the exposed subjects who were found to have impaired CV and CS. The results suppose that a low concentration of the mixed organic solvents might affect the retina and optic nerve. However, it needs to be further researched if such an impact affects the Brodmann's areas of visual cortex in the brain.
