A detailed analysis of the C(sp 3 )-H activation process by vinylidene Au I complexes is described based on an intrinsic bond orbital analysis. Based on our analysis this event can be divided into three phases: (i) hydride transfer, (ii) C-C bond formation, and (iii) σ to π rearrangement of the lone pair coordinated to Au. Small perturbations of the system lead to either a concerted asynchronous reaction, or a stepwise reaction featuring an intermediate with a C-H-C three-centre two-electron (3c-2e) bond. Al-F bonds are among the most stable σ bonds known, exhibiting an even higher bond energy than Si-F bonds. Despite a stability advantage and a potentially high Lewis acidity of Al-F complexes, they have not been described as structurally defined catalysts for enantioselective reactions. We show that Al-F salen complexes with appended ammonium moieties give exceptional catalytic activity in asymmetric carboxycyanations. In addition to aromatic aldehydes, enal and aliphatic substrates are well accepted. Turnover numbers up to around 10 4 were achieved, whereas with previous catalysts 10 1 -10 2 turnovers were typically attained. In contrast to Al-Me and Al-Cl salen complexes, the analogous Al-F species are remarkably stable towards air, water, and heat, and can be recovered unchanged after catalysis. The title reaction is involved in the formation of ammonia in the interstellar medium. We have calculated thermal rates including atom tunnelling using different rate theories. Canonical variational theory with microcanonically optimised multidimensional tunnelling was used for bimolecular rates, modelling the gas-phase reaction and also a surface-catalysed reaction of the Eley-Rideal type. Instanton theory provided unimolecular rates, which model the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type surface reaction. The potential energy was calculated on the CCSD(T)-F12 level of theory on the fly. We report thermal rates and H/D kinetic isotope effects. The latter have implications for observed H/D fractionation in molecular clouds. Tunnelling causes rate constants to be sufficient for the reaction to play a role in interstellar chemistry even at cryogenic temperature. We also discuss intricacies and limitations of the different tunnelling approximations to treat this reaction, including its pre-reactive minimum.

The final step of the water formation network on interstellar grain surfaces starting from the H + O 2 route is the reaction between H and H 2 O 2 . This reaction is known to have a high activation energy and therefore at low temperatures it can only proceed via tunneling. To date, however, no rate constants are available at temperatures below 200 K. In this work, we use instanton theory to compute rate constants for the title reaction with and without isotopic substitutions down to temperatures of 50 K. The calculations are based on density functional theory, with additional benchmarks for the activation energy using unrestricted single-reference and multireference coupled-cluster single-point energies. Gas-phase bimolecular rate constants are calculated and compared with available experimental data not only for H + H 2 O 2 → H 2 O + OH, but also for H + H 2 O 2 → H 2 + HO 2 . We find a branching ratio where the title reaction is favored by at least two orders of magnitude at 114 K. In the interstellar medium this reaction predominantly occurs on water surfaces, which increases the probability that the two reactants meet. To mimic this, one, two, or three spectator H 2 O molecules are added to the system. Eley-Rideal bimolecular and Langmuir-Hinshelwood unimolecular rate constants are presented here. The kinetic isotope effects for the various cases are compared to experimental data as well as to expressions commonly used in astrochemical models. Both the rectangular barrier and the Eckart approximations lead to errors of about an order of magnitude. Finally, fits of the rate constants are provided as input for astrochemical models.

Investigating how formamide forms in the interstellar medium is a hot topic in astrochemistry, which can contribute to our understanding of the origin of life on Earth. We have constructed a QM/MM model to simulate the hydrogenation of isocyanic acid on amorphous solid water surfaces to form formamide. The binding energy of HNCO on the ASW surface varies significantly between different binding sites, we found values between ∼0 and 100 kJ mol -1 . The barrier for the hydrogenation reaction is almost independent of the binding energy, though. We calculated tunneling rate constants of H + HNCO → NH 2 CO at temperatures down to 103 K combining QM/MM with instanton theory. Tunneling dominates the reaction at such low temperatures. The tunneling reaction is hardly accelerated by the amorphous solid water surface compared to the gas phase for this system, even though the activation energy of the surface reaction is lower than the one of the gas-phase reaction. Both the height and width of the barrier affect the tunneling rate in practice. Strong kinetic isotope effects were observed by comparing to rate constants of D + HNCO → NHDCO. At 103 K we found a KIE of 231 on the surface and 146 in the gas phase. Furthermore, we investigated the gas-phase reaction NH 2 + H 2 CO → NH 2 CHO + H and found it unlikely to occur at cryogenic temperatures. The data of our tunneling rate constants are expected to significantly influence astrochemical models.

Bonding and stabilizing effects in gold carbene complexes are investigated by using Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) and the intrinsic bond orbital (IBO) approach. The π-stabilizing effects of organic substituents at the carbene carbon atom coordinated to the gold atom are evaluated for a series of recently isolated and characterized complexes, as well as intermediates of prototypical 1,6-enyne cyclization reactions. A quantum chemical investigation of the Bu4N[Fe(CO)3(NO)]-catalyzed Cloke-Wilson rearrangement of vinyl cyclopropanes is reported. It was found that allylic C-C bond activation can proceed through a SN2' or SN2-type mechanism. The application of the recently reported intrinsic bond orbital (IBO) method for all structures indicated that one Fe-N π bond is directly involved. Quantum mechanical tunneling of atoms plays a significant role in many chemical reactions. The crossover temperature between classical and quantum movement is a convenient preliminary indication of the importance of tunneling for a particular reaction. Here we show, using instanton theory, that quantum tunneling is possible significantly above this crossover temperature for specific forms of the potential energy surface. We demonstrate the effect on an analytic potential as well as a chemical system. While protons move asynchronously along a Grotthuss chain in the classical high-temperature range, the onset of tunneling results in a synchronization of their movement.

Quantum mechanical tunneling of atoms allows chemical reactions to proceed through barriers too high for thermally activated processes. This causes hydroxycarbenes to decay rapidly and at a temperature-independent rate even at 11 K. In methylhydroxycarbene, tunneling causes decay through a mechanism that reveals a high but thin barrier rather than an alternative with a lower but broader barrier. No accurate estimates of the widths of such barriers and the lengths of tunneling paths were available. Herein, such a measure is provided by calculating the length of the tunneling paths by using instanton theory. Potential energies are provided by density functional theory verified by explicitly correlated coupled cluster CCSD(T) energies. Our results explain the decay efficiency in the known cases and suggest new substitutions to tune the effects of barrier widths and heights. Fluorination and replacement of the hydroxyl group by a thiol group change the qualitative character of the decay.
