Three nested molybdenum wire arrays with initial outer diameters of 45, 50, and 55 mm were imploded by the ∼20 MA, 90 ns rise-time current pulse of Sandia’s Z accelerator. The implosions generated Mo plasmas with ≈10% of the array’s initial mass reaching Ne-like and nearby ionization stages. These ions emitted 2–4 keV L-shell x rays with radiative powers approaching 10 TW. Mo L-shell spectra with axial and temporal resolution were captured and have been analyzed using a collisional-radiative model. The measured spectra indicate significant axial variation in the electron density, which increases from a few times 1020 cm-3 at the cathode up to ∼3×1021 cm-3 near the middle of the 20 mm plasma column (8 mm from the anode). Time-resolved spectra indicate that the peak electron density is reached before the peak of the L-shell emission and decreases with time, while the electron temperature remains within 10% of 1.7 keV over the 20–30 ns L-shell radiation pulse. Finally, while the total yield, peak total power, and peak L-shell power all tended to decrease with increasing initial wire array diameters, the L-shell yield and the average plasma conditions varied little with the initial wire array diameter. Recent experiments conducted on the Saturn pulsed-power generator at Sandia National Laboratories [R. B. Spielman et al., in Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Dense Z Pinches, Laguna Beach, CA, 1989, edited by N. R. Pereira, J. Davis, and N. Rostoker (American Institute of Physics, New York, 1989), p. 3] have produced large amounts of x-ray output, which cannot be accounted for in conventional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculations. In these experiments, the Saturn current had a rise time of ∼180 ns in contrast to a rise time of ∼60 ns in Saturn’s earlier mode of operation. In both aluminum and tungsten wire-array Z-pinch implosions, 2–4 times more x-ray output was generated than could be supplied according to one-dimensional (1D) magnetohydrodynamic calculations by the combined action of the j×B acceleration forces and ohmic heating (as described by a classical Braginskii resistivity). In this paper, we reexamine the problem of coupling transmission line circuits to plasma fluid equations and derive expressions for the Z-pinch load circuit resistance and inductance that relate these quantities in a 1D analysis to the surface resistivity of the fluid, and to the magnetic field energy that is stored in the vacuum diode, respectively. Enhanced energy coupling in this analysis, therefore, comes from enhancements to the surface resistivity, and we show that plasma resistivities approximately three orders of magnitude larger than classical are needed in order to achieve energy inputs that are comparable to the Saturn experiment x-ray outputs. Large enhancements of the plasma resistivity increase the rate of magnetic field and current diffusion, significantly modify the qualitative features of the MHD, and raise important questions as to how the plasma fluid dynamics converts enhanced energy inputs into enhanced x-ray outputs. One-dimensional MHD calculations in which resistivity values are adjusted phenomenologically are used to illustrate how various dynamical assumptions influence the way enhanced energy inputs are channeled by the fluid dynamics. Variations in the parameters of the phenomenological model are made in order to determine how sensitively they influence the dynamics and the degree to which the calculated x-ray outputs can be made to replicate the kinds of large variations in the experimental x-ray power data that were observed in three nominally identical aluminum wire shots on Saturn. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Radiation transport redistributes energy within a medium through the emission and reabsorption of photons. These processes also have a pronounced effect on the spectrum of radiation that escapes the medium. As the deliverable energies of plasma drivers such as lasers and pulsed-power generators steadily increase, denser and/or more massive plasmas can be created. Such plasmas are more absorptive to their own emitted radiation, with portions of the line spectrum frequently being highly opaque. Thus, radiation transport becomes more important, along with the need to consider its impact on the design of experiments and their diagnosis. This tutorial paper covers the basic theory and equations describing radiation transport, its physical effects, experimental examples of transport phenomena, and current challenges and issues. Among the specific topics discussed are requirements for local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), conditions for diffusion and the use of the diffusion approximation, the formation of emission and absorption lines, the approach of an emitted spectrum to the Planck limit, and diagnostic applications of transport effects. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. A computationally efficient method for transporting radiation in multidimensional plasmas has been developed and evaluated. The basis of this method is a uniform plasma approximation that allows one to utilize existing escape probability techniques that are successfully used in one-dimensional (1D) calculations to approximately solve the multidimensional radiation transport problem. This method is superior to diffusion methods because (1) the probability of escape technique insures that the plasma goes to the correct optically thin and thick limits, (2) the effects of line absorption due to photoexcitations are modeled, and (3) this method uses source functions that are based on a self-consistent nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium calculation, not an ad hoc assumption that the source functions are Planckian. This method is highly efficient because equation of state information from 1D calculations is tabulated as a function of plasma internal energy, ion density, and the line probability of escape from a uniform plasma, and then used in multidimensional calculations. Given the internal energy and ion density, and by calculating the line probability of escape from a zone of the multidimensional plasma, the equation of state, including emissivities and absorption coefficients, of the zone is determined from the table. Total radiative power, K-shell radiative power, total radiative yield, K-shell radiative yield, and plasma density and temperature profiles obtained from 1D Z-pinch calculations employing this method are in good agreement with the same powers, yields, and profiles calculated using a full radiation transport model. Plasmas 2, 2765 (1995)] to determine the influence of radiation transport in argon Z-pinch experiments performed on the Z machine [R. B. Spielman et al., Phys. Hardware and software have been developed for recording and displaying accurate image and spectral data produced by z-pinch plasma radiation sources at the Double-EAGLE facility at Maxwell Physics International. Desktop computers are used to acquire the data, analyze it, and display and print the results. Of the four charge-coupled device (CCD) image recording systems implemented, two record x rays directly and two record optical light emission from electron-excited phosphors. The CCD systems required careful shielding to allow them to operate in the harsh radio frequency noise environment. During a series of shots at the SATURN facility at Sandia National Laboratories, the quality of a keV x-ray spectrum recorded directly with a CCD compared well with an equivalent spectrum recorded with 2497 film. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. This paper presents a simple physics-based model for the interpretation of key metrics in laser direct drive. The only input parameters required are target scale, in-flight aspect ratio, and beam-to-target radius, and the importance of each has been quantified with a tailored set of cryogenic implosion experiments. These analyses lead to compact and accurate predictions of the fusion yield and areal density as a function of hydrodynamic stability, and they suggest new ways to take advantage of direct drive. To provide examples, we discuss how the inferred mix width behaves relative to theory and then show how it could be exploited to perform a direct drive implosion with a Lawson metric or χ_{noα} of 0.24±0.02-using a novel parameter space at high velocities and beam radii on the OMEGA laser-that projects to ignition at a laser energy of ≤2.0 MJ.

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. Background: Whole Health (WH) is a patient-centered model of care being implemented by the Veterans Health Administration. Little is known about how use of WH services impacts patients' health and well-being., Objective: We sought to assess the association of WH utilization with pain and other patient-reported outcomes (PRO) over 6 months., Design: A longitudinal observational cohort evaluation, comparing changes in PRO surveys for WH users and Conventional Care (CC) users. Inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to balance the two groups on observed demographic and clinical characteristics., Participants: A total of 9689 veterans receiving outpatient care at 18 VA medical centers piloting WH., Interventions: WH services included goal-setting clinical encounters, Whole Health coaching, personal health planning, and well-being services., Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was change in pain intensity and interference at 6 months using the 3-item PEG. Secondary outcomes included satisfaction, experiences of care, patient engagement in healthcare, and well-being., Key Results: By 6 months,1053 veterans had utilized WH and 3139 utilized only CC. Baseline pain PEG scores were 6.2 (2.5) for WH users and 6.4 (2.3) for CC users (difference p = 0.028), improving by - 2.4% (p = 0.006) and - 2.3% (p < 0.001), respectively. In adjusted analyses, WH use was unassociated with greater improvement in PEG scores compared to CC - 1.0% (- 2.9%, 1.2%). Positive trends were observed for 8 of 15 exploratory outcomes for WH compared to CC. WH use was associated with greater improvements at 6 months in likelihood to recommend VA 2.0% (0.9%, 3.3%); discussions of goals 11.8% (8.2%, 15.5%); perceptions of healthcare interactions 2.5% (0.4%, 4.6%); and engagement in health behaviors 2.2% (0.3%, 3.9%)., Conclusion: This study provides early evidence supporting the delivery of WH patient-centered care services to improve veterans' experiences of and engagement in care. Laser-direct-drive fusion target designs with solid deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel, a high-Z gradient-density pusher shell (GDPS), and a Au-coated foam layer have been investigated through both 1D and 2D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. Compared with conventional low-Z ablators and DT-push-on-DT targets, these GDPS targets possess certain advantages of being instability-resistant implosions that can be high adiabat (α≥8) and low hot-spot and pusher-shell convergence (CR&#95;{hs}≈22 and CR&#95;{PS}≈17), and have a low implosion velocity (v&#95;{imp}<3×10^{7}cm/s). Using symmetric drive with laser energies of 1.9 to 2.5MJ, 1D lilac simulations of these GDPS implosions can result in neutron yields corresponding to ≳50-MJ energy, even with reduced laser absorption due to the cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) effect. Two-dimensional draco simulations show that these GDPS targets can still ignite and deliver neutron yields from 4 to ∼10MJ even if CBET is present, while traditional DT-push-on-DT targets normally fail due to the CBET-induced reduction of ablation pressure. If CBET is mitigated, these GDPS targets are expected to produce neutron yields of >20MJ at a driven laser energy of ∼2MJ. The key factors behind the robust ignition and moderate energy gain of such GDPS implosions are as follows: (1) The high initial density of the high-Z pusher shell can be placed at a very high adiabat while the DT fuel is maintained at a relatively low-entropy state; therefore, such implosions can still provide enough compression ρR>1g/cm^{2} for sufficient confinement; (2) the high-Z layer significantly reduces heat-conduction loss from the hot spot since thermal conductivity scales as ∼1/Z; and (3) possible radiation trapping may offer an additional advantage for reducing energy loss from such high-Z targets.

Introduction The development and spread of innovation are known challenges in health care. The US Veterans Health Administration (VHA) created a "Shark Tank"-style competition directed at frontline employees. In this annual, systemwide competition, employees submit innovations to the competition, and winning innovations receive support for implementation in other facilities. Method A multiple case study design was used to understand facility engagement in the competition, and the relationship between engagement and organizational conditions. The authors created a typology to describe the relationship between facility engagement in the competition and organizational conditions for innovation. Results Overall, there was high participation in the VHA's competition across all 130 facilities. The authors identified 7 mutually exclusive types of facility engagement. Discussion As expected, facilities with the most established conditions for innovation were the most engaged in the competition. Additionally, other facilities had various ways to be involved. Consequently, there may be benefit to the VHA tailoring how they work with facilities, based on organizational conditions. Larger facilities with ongoing research and more resources may be more suited to develop innovations, whereas smaller facilities could benefit from a focus on adoption. For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Luminescent carbon nanomaterials are important materials for sensing, imaging, and display technologies. This work describes the use of microwave heating for the template-assisted preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers (CNFs) from the reaction of a range of beverage-related precursors with the nitrogen-rich polyethyleneimine. Highly luminescent robust carbon fibers that were 10 to 30 m in length and had a diameter of 200 nm were obtained under moderate conditions of temperature (250-260 °C) and a short reaction time (6 min). The high aspect ratio fibers showed wavelength-dependent emission that can be readily imaged using epifluorescence. The development of these multi-emissive one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterials offers potential for a range of applications.

Carbon based nanomaterials offer the potential to provide solutions to key technological challenges. This work describes the preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers by template-assisted microwave pyrolysis of environmentally friendly precursors, citric acid and polyethyleneimine, in aqueous solution. SEM reveals a dense forest of vertically aligned cylindrical carbon nanofibers with an average diameter of ca. 200 nm, which are shown by TEM to be amorphous. Compositional analysis indicated the incorporation of amino and pyrrolic nitrogen, and carbon-oxygen moieties. These species contribute to UV light absorption with an absorption shoulder and tail towards visible wavelengths. UV excitation gave visible (blue) emission at ca. 450 nm with a quantum yield of ca. 5%; emission decay under pulsed excitation was predominantly mono-exponential with a lifetime of ca. 1 ns. The emission maximum is largely excitation wavelength independent suggesting the involvement of citrazinic acid-type functionalities in the fiber photophysics. Reversible pH-dependent excitation and emission behaviour was observed, with maximum emission at ca. pH 7. Nanofiber emission was also quenched in aqueous solutions of metal cations, in a concentration-dependent manner. Single nanofiber emission intensity was quite stable under continuous excitation permitting single fiber quenching-based metal ion detection whereby a significant (>90%) and prompt (sub-10 s) quenching was observed upon exposure to sub-millimolar Fe(iii) solutions. Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are particularly common in the shoulder/neck region for some tasks that involve low force exertions, for example computer work. It has been demonstrated that muscle activity may be stimulated by cognitively demanding tasks. There is a lack of studies on the relationship between qualitative levels of cognitive loading, level of muscle activity, and muscle fatigue., Aims: To investigate the effects of quantitative levels of cognitive loading on conduction velocity changes and isometric endurance times for the upper trapezius., Methods: Participants performed a combination of three levels of a cognitively demanding computer task (0, 1.59 and 3 Bits) while simultaneously performing either of two isometric endurance tests (20 and 40% MVC) for the upper trapezius., Results: Information load had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on normalized conduction velocity slopes for the 40% but not for the 20% maximum voluntary contraction conditions. Information load had a highly significant effect on endurance times for both exertion levels (P < 0.01)., Conclusions: This study found that performing a high-difficulty cognitive task while simultaneously performing increasingly higher levels of static isometric shoulder abduction exertions, fatigued the trapezius muscle quicker than performing an equivalent exertion with low cognitive load. Experiments with cylindrical copper wire arrays at the 1-MA Zebra facility show that high temperatures exist in the precursor plasmas formed when ablated wire array material accretes on the axis prior to the stagnation of a z pinch. In these experiments, the precursor radiated approximately 20% of the >1000 eV x-ray output, and time-resolved spectra show substantial emission from Cu L-shell lines. Modeling of the spectra shows an increase in temperature as the precursor forms, up to approximately 450 eV, after which the temperature decreases to approximately 220-320 eV until the main implosion.

We report the results of a series of current scaling experiments with the Z accelerator for the compact, single, 20-mm diameter, 10-mm long, tungsten-wire arrays employed for the double-ended hohlraum ICF concept [M. E. Cuneo, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 48, R1 (2006)]. We measured the z -pinch peak radiated x-ray power and total radiated x-ray energy as a function of the peak current, at a constant implosion time tau&#95;{imp}=80ns . Previous x-ray emission current scaling for these compact arrays was obtained at tau&#95;{imp}=95ns in the work of Stygar [Phys. Rev. E 69, 046403 (2004)]. In the present study we utilized lighter single-tungsten-wire arrays. For all the measurements, the load hardware dimensions, materials, and array wire number (N=300) were kept constant and were the same as the previous study. We also kept the normalized load current spatial and temporal profiles the same for all experiments reported in this work. Two different currents, 11.2+/-0.2MA and 17.0+/-0.3MA , were driven through the wire arrays. The average peak x-ray power for these compact wire arrays increased by 26%+/-7%to158+/-26TW at 17+/-0.3MA from the 125+/-24TW obtained at a peak current of 18.8+/-0.5MA with tau&#95;{imp}=95ns . The higher peak power of the faster implosions may possibly be attributed to a higher implosion velocity, which in turn improves the implosion stability, and/or to shorter wire ablation times, which may lead to a decrease in trailing mass and trailing current. Our results show that the scaling of the radiated x-ray peak power and total radiated x-ray energy scaling with peak drive current to be closer to quadratic than the results of Stygar We find that the x-ray peak radiated power is P&#95;{r} proportional, variantI;{1.57+/-0.20} and the total x-ray radiated energy E&#95;{r} proportional, variantI;{1.9+/-0.24} . We also find that the current scaling exponent of the power is sensitive to the inclusion of a single data point with a peak power at least 1.9sigma below the average. If we eliminate this particular shot from our analysis (shot 1608), the power and energy scaling becomes closer to quadratic. Namely, we find that the dependence on the peak load current of the peak x-ray radiated power and the total x-ray radiated energy become P&#95;{r} proportional, variantI;{1.71+/-0.10} and E&#95;{r} proportional, variantI;{2.01+/-0.21} , respectively. In this case, the power scaling exponent is different by more than 2sigma from the previously published results of Stygar Larger data sets are likely required to resolve this uncertainty and eliminate the sensitivity to statistical fluctuations in any future studies of this type. Nevertheless, with or without the inclusion of shot 1608, our results with tau&#95;{imp}=80ns fall short of an I2 scaling of the peak x-ray radiated power by at least 2sigma . In either case, the results of our study are consistent with the heuristic wire ablation model proposed by Stygar (P&#95;{r} proportional, variantI;{1.5}) . We also derive an empirical predictive relation that connects the power scaling exponent with certain array parameters.

Musculo Skeletal Disorders (MSDs) are the focus of considerable attention and research in occupational health, which is in part due to high prevalence rates and associated costs. In the United States, the total cost associated with MSDs increased from $81 billion in 1986 to $215 billion in 2005 [3]. Epidemiological studies have repeatedly shown associations between work-related psychosocial factors and MSDs, and the role of psychosocial factors and stress in these disorders has received increased attention. Several reviews have reported associations between MSDs and work-related psychosocial factors such as high workload/demands, high perceived stress levels, low social support, low job control, low job satisfaction and monotonous work. Several theories have been proposed to explain the apparent relationship between stress and MSDs in the workplace from a biological perspective. These include the biopsychosocial model of job stress, the hyperventilation theory, the migraine theory, the muscle spindle theory and the Cinderella hypothesis. Within the literature, a vast array of questionnaires have been developed in an attempt to measure the psychosocial factors that occur within the workplace. This article presents a discussion of existing knowledge of the psychosocial risk factors potentially linked to MSDs and potential pathways to injury. A discussion of evaluation approaches used to estimate psychosocial risk exposures in workplaces is also presented.

Axially localized NaF dopants are coated onto Al cylindrical wire arrays in order to act as spectroscopic tracers in the stagnated z-pinch plasma. Non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium kinetic models fit to Na K-shell lines provide an independent measurement of the density and temperature that is consistent with spectroscopic analysis of K-shell emissions from Al and an alloyed Mg dopant. Axial transport of the Na dopant is observed, enabling quantitative study of instabilities in dense z-pinch plasmas.

The ion-kinetic energy throughout K emission in a stagnating plasma was determined from the Doppler contribution to the shapes of optically thin lines. X-ray spectroscopy with a remarkably high spectral resolution, together with simultaneous imaging along the pinch, was employed. Over the emission period, a drop of the ion-kinetic energy down to the electron thermal energy was seen. Axially resolved time-dependent electron-density measurements and absolute intensities of line and continuum allowed for investigating, for the first time, each segment of the pinch, the balance between the ion-kinetic energy at the stagnating plasma, and the total radiation emitted. Within the experimental uncertainties, the ion-kinetic energy is shown to account for the total radiation.

The dynamics of mass transport were observed in a wire array implosion with multiframe laser probing. Plasma bubbles arise at breaks in the wires. Interferometry shows that the leading edge of the bubbles brings material to the axis of the array. The speed of this material was measured to be > or =3 x 10(7) cm/s during the wire array implosion. A shock was observed during the collision of the bubbles with the precursor. The Faraday effect indicates current flowing in breaks on the wires. The current switches from the imploding mass to the on-axis plasma column at the beginning of the x-ray pulse.

Pulsed power driven metallic wire-array Z pinches are the most powerful and efficient laboratory x-ray sources. Furthermore, under certain conditions the soft x-ray energy radiated in a 5 ns pulse at stagnation can exceed the estimated kinetic energy of the radial implosion phase by a factor of 3 to 4. A theoretical model is developed here to explain this, allowing the rapid conversion of magnetic energy to a very high ion temperature plasma through the generation of fine scale, fast-growing m = 0 interchange MHD instabilities at stagnation. These saturate nonlinearly and provide associated ion viscous heating. Next the ion energy is transferred by equipartition to the electrons and thus to soft x-ray radiation. Recent time-resolved iron spectra at Sandia confirm an ion temperature Ti of over 200 keV (2 x 10(9) degrees), as predicted by theory. These are believed to be record temperatures for a magnetically confined plasma.

Three-dimensional perturbations have been seeded in wire-array z pinches by etching 15 microm diameter aluminum wires to introduce 20% modulations in radius with a controlled axial wavelength. These perturbations seed additional three-dimensional imploding structures that are studied experimentally and with magnetohydrodynamics calculations, highlighting the role of current path nonuniformity in perturbation-induced magnetic bubble formation.

Experimental and computational investigations of nanosecond electrical explosion of a thin Al wire in vacuum are presented. We have demonstrated that increasing the current rate leads to increased energy deposited before voltage collapse. The experimental evidence for synchronization of the wire expansion and light emission with voltage collapse is presented. Hydrocarbons are indicated in optical spectra and their influence on breakdown physics is discussed. The radial velocity of low-density plasma reaches a value of approximately 100 km/s. The possibility of an over-critical phase transition due to high pressure is discussed. A one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation shows good agreement with experimental data. The MHD simulation demonstrates separation of the exploding wire into a high-density cold core and a low-density hot corona as well as fast rejection of the current from the wire core to the corona during voltage collapse. Important features of the dynamics for the wire core and corona follow from the MHD simulation and are discussed.

Nested-wire array experiments have been conducted at the 7 MA level with 150 ns implosion times from an outer diameter of 40 mm. Analysis of spectral data indicates that material from the outer array preferentially occupies the high temperature core of the stagnated pinch independent of the interwire gap in the range of 1.1 to 4.5 mm.

We present the first comprehensive study of high wire-number, wire-array Z-pinch dynamics at 14-18 MA using x-ray backlighting and optical shadowgraphy diagnostics. The cylindrical arrays retain slowly expanding, dense wire cores at the initial position up to 60% of the total implosion time. Azimuthally correlated instabilities at the array edge appear during this stage which continue to grow in amplitude and wavelength after the start of bulk motion, resulting in measurable trailing mass that does not arrive on axis before peak x-ray emission.

Absorption spectroscopy measurements of the time-dependent heating of thin foils exposed to intense z-pinch radiation sources are presented. These measurements and their analysis provide valuable benchmarks for, and insights into, the radiative heating of matter by x-ray sources. Z-pinch radiation sources with peak powers of up to 160 TW radiatively heated thin plastic-tamped aluminum foils to temperatures approximately 60 eV. The foils were located in open slots at the boundary of z-pinch hohlraums surrounding the pinch. Time-resolved Kalpha satellite absorption spectroscopy was used to measure the evolution of the Al ionization distribution, using a geometry in which the pinch served as the backlighter. The time-dependent pinch radius and x-ray power were monitored using framing camera, x-ray diode array, and bolometer measurements. A three-dimensional view factor code, within which one-dimensional (1D) radiation-hydrodynamics calculations were performed for each surface element in the view factor grid, was used to compute the incident and reemitted radiation flux distribution throughout the hohlraum and across the foil surface. Simulated absorption spectra were then generated by postprocessing radiation-hydrodynamics results for the foil heating using a 1D collisional-radiative code. Our simulated results were found to be in good general agreement with experimental x-ray spectra, indicating that the spectral measurements are consistent with independent measurements of the pinch power. We also discuss the sensitivity of our results to the spectrum of the radiation field incident on the foil, and the role of nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium atomic kinetics in affecting the spectra.

Experiments performed on the 8-MA Saturn accelerator to investigate the effects of interwire gap spacing on long-implosion-time Z pinches have resulted in the observation of a regime of optimal wire number. The experiments varied the wire number of 40 and 32 mm diam arrays, resulting in interwire gaps from 3.9 to 0.36 mm, with fixed mass and length. aluminum K-shell powers up to 3.4 TW were measured, with long, slow rising, lower power x-ray pulses for interwire gaps greater than 2.2 mm and less than 0.7 mm, and short, fast rising, higher power pulses for interwire gaps in the range 0.7-2.2 mm.

In numerous experiments, magnetic energy coupled to strongly radiating Z-pinch plasmas exceeds the thermalized kinetic energy, sometimes by a factor of 2-3. We demonstrate that the enhanced energy coupling may be due to the buoyancy rise of toroidal magnetic flux tubes converging to the axis through the unstable pinch plasma. We derive an explicit formula for the enhanced dissipation rate and apply this formula to reconsider an old problem of power balance in a steady-state Z pinch, and then to analyze a new challenge of producing K-shell 3 to 10 keV radiation in long-pulse Z-pinch implosions.

A series of ompA mutants derived from Escherichia coli K12 strains showed increased sensitivity (compared with the ompA+ parents) to aminoglycoside antibiotics and to other cationic agents including polymyxin B. One tested mutant also showed increased sensitivity to nafcillin and fusidic acid, but not to the hydrophilic ampicillin. All these inhibitor sensitivities in the ompA mutants were suppressed by ColV, I-K94 and by certain other ColV plasmids, but not by any of the other tested large plasmids. Suppression correlated with the production of the VmpA protein, but transfer and colicin components were not needed for suppression. Further comparison of the ompA and vmpA genes and their products was made and it indicated that there is little if any homology between the genes, that the synthesis of their products is regulated by quite different mechanisms, and that regions of these gene products exposed at the cell surface show different susceptibility to protease attack after denaturation.

The self-excision of a 413-base intervening sequence of the 26S rRNA of Tetrahymena thermophila has been investigated using phosphorothioate-substituted RNA. Transcripts containing this intron were prepared by T7 RNA polymerase-catalyzed polymerisation using a M13 mICE10 vector in the presence of various nucleoside alpha-thiotriphosphate analogues. Wild-type transcripts incorporating phosphorothioates 5' to adenosine or uridine were inactive, whereas incorporation 5' to cytidine or guanosine allowed splicing. The first two substitutions place phosphorothioates inter alia at the 5' and 3' splice sites respectively. Mutagenesis at either site allowed phosphorothioate substitution 5' to guanosine at each splice site. This did not block splicing, suggesting that substitution at internal sites within the intron has more effect.

Organisms of three independently isolated ompA mutants of Escherichia coli failed to form colonies on glucose minimal agar (glucose MA) at 44 degrees C after growth in glucose minimal salts medium at 37 degrees C, although all three strains formed colonies on nutrient agar at 44 degrees C. Supplementation of the glucose MA with individual amino acids including L-methionine and/or L-cysteine did not allow colony formation at 44 degrees C, although addition of 0.1% Casamino acids was effective; replacement of glucose with other energy sources or ammonium ions with glutamate also did not allow growth at 44 degrees C. The failure to form colonies at 44 degrees C was not due to killing of the organisms, because colonies were formed if plates of the ompA mutant initially incubated at 44 degrees C were shifted to 30 degrees C after 16 h. Introduction of the ColV, I-K94 plasmid into P678-54 ompA, 1131 ompA or an ompC ompA mutant suppressed the 44 degrees C growth lesion, but other plasmids (F lac, R483ColIa, RI, ColB-K98, R124) tested in P678-54 ompA did not. Growth of the ColV, I-K94+ derivative at 44 degrees C was due to a suppressing effect of the plasmid rather than to introduction of the plasmid into a variant with normal or altered OmpA protein. An attempt was made to ascertain which component(s) encoded by ColV, I-K94 was (were) responsible for allowing growth at 44 degrees C. Transfer components appeared unlikely to be involved and plasmids which conferred individual colicins (plus the corresponding immunity component) did not suppress.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The presence of the virulence plasmids ColV,I-K94 or ColV-K30 in Escherichia coli produces a number of cell membrane and envelope changes. The most striking of these are (1) the presence of the 33K VmpA outer membrane protein and (2) the ColV-associated occurrence of autoagglutination. The VmpA protein is a plasmid-encoded outer membrane protein which is synthesized from a larger precursor. It is distinct from the chromosomally-encoded OmpA protein but resembles it in a few respects. The VmpA protein does not appear to be involved in colicin synthesis or immunity, or in plasmid transfer. This protein was found in 6 out of 8 new ColV+ isolates, but not in 2 ColIa+ strains. ColV-induced autoagglutination occurred for strains grown in static culture at 37 but not at 25 degrees C. Detergents prevented agglutination, as did the presence in a ColV+ strain of a fi+ plasmid, ColB. Autoagglutination may be a virulence phenotype. Associated with the ability of ColV+ bacteria to agglutinate was inhibition of motility. ColV+ bacteria also showed changes in envelope permeability indicated by inhibitor sensitivity and by a ColV-associated suppression of the lac Y lesion. Some ColV,I-K94+ strains showed a mucoid colonial phenotype and this ability to form mucoid colonies was efficiently transferred with ColV but apparently not without it. The mucoid ColV+ strains resembled lon mutants in UV-sensitivity, division behaviour and sensitivity to lambda phage.
