By confining water in a nanoporous structure so narrow that the liquid could not freeze, it is possible to study properties of this previously undescribed system well below its homogeneous nucleation temperature TH = 231 K. Using this trick, we were able to study, by means of a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrational spectra (HOH bending and OH-stretching modes) of deeply supercooled water in the temperature range 183 < T < 273 K. We observed, upon decreasing temperature, the building up of a new population of hydrogen-bonded oscillators centered around 3,120 cm(-1), the contribution of which progressively dominates the spectra as one enters into the deeply supercooled regime. We determined that the fractional weight of this spectral component reaches 50% just at the temperature, TL approximately 225 K, where the confined water shows a fragile-to-strong dynamic cross-over phenomenon [Ito, K., Moynihan, C. T., Angell, C. A. (1999) Nature 398:492-494]. Furthermore, the fact that the corresponding OH stretching spectral peak position of the low-density-amorphous solid water occurs exactly at 3,120 cm(-1) [Sivakumar, T. C., Rice, S. A., Sceats, M. G. (1978) J. Chem. Phys. 69:3468-3476.] strongly suggests that these oscillators originate from existence of the low-density-liquid phase derived from the occurrence of the first-order liquid-liquid (LL) phase transition and the associated LL critical point in supercooled water proposed earlier by a computer molecular dynamics simulation [Poole, P. H., Sciortino, F., Essmann, U., Stanley, H. E. (1992) Nature 360:324-328].

By confining water in nanopores, so narrow that the liquid cannot freeze, it is possible to explore its properties well below its homogeneous nucleation temperature T(H) approximately equals 235 K. In particular, the dynamical parameters of water can be measured down to 180 K, approaching the suggested glass transition temperature T(g) approximately equals 165 K. Here we present experimental evidence, obtained from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering spectroscopies, of a well defined decoupling of transport properties (the self-diffusion coefficient and the average translational relaxation time), which implies the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation. We further show that such a non-monotonic decoupling reflects the characteristics of the recently observed dynamic crossover, at approximately 225 K, between the two dynamical behaviors known as fragile and strong, which is a consequence of a change in the hydrogen bond structure of liquid water.

Standard Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to assess the accuracy of theoretical predictions for the structural properties of a model fluid interacting through a hard-core two-Yukawa potential composed of a short-range attractive well next to a hard repulsive core, followed by a smooth, long-range repulsive tail. Theoretical calculations are performed in the framework provided by the Ornstein-Zernike equation, solved either analytically with the mean spherical approximation (MSA) or iteratively with the hypernetted-chain (HNC) closure. Our analysis shows that both theories are generally accurate in a thermodynamic region corresponding to a dense vapor phase around the critical point. For a suitable choice of potential parameters, namely, when the attractive well is deep and/or large enough, the static structure factor displays a secondary low-Q peak. In this case HNC predictions closely follow the simulation results, whereas MSA results progressively worsen the more pronounced this low-Q peak is. We discuss the appearance of such a peak, also experimentally observed in colloidal suspensions and protein solutions, in terms of the formation of equilibrium clusters in the homogeneous fluid.

The phonon propagation and damping along the axial direction of films of aligned 40 wt % calf-thymus DNA rods are studied by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The IXS spectra are analyzed with the generalized three effective eigenmode theory, from which we extract the dynamic structure factor S(Q,E) as a function of transferred energy E=variant Planck's over 2piomega, and the magnitude of the transferred wave vector Q. S(Q,E) of a DNA sample typically consists of three peaks, one central Rayleigh scattering peak, and two symmetric Stokes and anti-Stokes Brillouin side peaks. By analyzing the Brillouin peaks, the phonon excitation energy and damping can be extracted at different Q values from about 4 to 30 nm(-1). A high-frequency sound speed is obtained from the initial slope of the linear portion of the dispersion relation below Q=4 nm(-1). The high-frequency sound speed obtained in this Q range is 3100 ms, which is about twice faster than the ultrasound speed of 1800 ms, measured by Brillouin light scattering at Q approximately 0.01 nm(-1) at the similar hydration level. Our observations provide further evidence of the strong coupling between the internal dynamics of a DNA molecule and the dynamics of the solvent. The effect on damping and propagation of phonons along the axial direction of DNA rods due to divalent and trivalent counterions has been studied. It is found that the added multivalent counterions introduce stronger phonon damping. The phonons at the range between approximately 12.5 and approximately 22.5 nm(-1) are overdamped by the added counterions according to our model analyses. The intermediate scattering function is extracted and it shows a clear two-step relaxation with the fast relaxation time ranging from 0.1 to 4 ps.

By confining water in nanopores of silica glass, we can bypass the crystallization and study the pressure effect on the dynamical behavior in deeply supercooled state using neutron scattering. We observe a clear evidence of a cusplike fragile-to-strong (FS) dynamic transition. Here we show that the transition temperature decreases steadily with an increasing pressure, until it intersects the homogenous nucleation temperature line of bulk water at a pressure of 1600 bar. Above this pressure, it is no longer possible to discern the characteristic feature of the FS transition. Identification of this end point with the possible second critical point is discussed.

Small angle neutron scattering intensity distributions taken from cytochrome C and lysozyme protein solutions show a rising intensity at a very small wave vector Q, which can be interpreted in terms of the presence of a weak long-range attraction between protein molecules. This interaction has a range several times that of the diameter of the protein molecule, much greater than the range of the screened electrostatic repulsion. We show evidence that this long-range attraction is closely related to the type of anion present and ion concentration in the solution.

We present a different and efficient method for implementing the analytical solution of Ornstein-Zernike equation for two-Yukawa fluids in the mean spherical approximation. We investigate, in particular, the conditions for the formation of an extra low-Q peak in the structure factor, which we interpret as due to cluster formation in the two-Yukawa fluid when the interparticle potential is composed of a short-range attraction and a long-range repulsion. We then apply this model to interpret the small angle neutron scattering data for protein solutions at moderate concentrations and find out that the presence of a peak centered at Q=0 (zero-Q peak) besides the regular interaction peak due to charged proteins implies an existence of long-range attractive interactions besides the charge repulsion., ((c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.)

We study a model colloidal system where particles interact via short-range attractive and long-range repulsive Yukawa potentials. Using the structure factor calculated from the mean-spherical approximation as the input, the kinetic phase diagrams as functions of the attraction depth and the volume fraction are obtained by calculating the Debye-Waller factors in the framework of the mode-coupling theory for three different heights of the repulsive barrier. The glass-glass reentrance phenomenon in the attractive colloidal case is also observed in the presence of the long-range repulsive barrier, which results in the lower and upper glass regimes. Competition between the short-range attraction and the long-range repulsion gives rise to new regimes associated with clusters such as "static cluster glass" and "dynamic cluster glass," which appear in the lower glass regime. Along the liquid-glass transition line between the liquid regime and the lower glass regime, crossover points separating different glass states are identified.

Using the inverse geometry spectrometer QENS at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source of the Argonne National Laboratory, we collected quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering spectra of hydrated tricalcium and dicalcium silicate, the main components of ordinary Portland cement. Data were obtained at different curing time, from a few hours to several months. Both the quasielastic and inelastic spectra have been analyzed at the same time according to the relaxing cage model, which is a model developed to describe the dynamics of water at supercooled temperatures. Short-time and long-time dynamics of hydration water in hydrated cement pastes as a function of the curing time have been simultaneously obtained. The results confirm the findings reported in previous experiments showing that it is possible to fit consistently the quasielastic and inelastic spectra giving insights on the effect of the curing time on the short-time vibrational dynamics of hydration water., ((c) 2004 American Institute of Physics.)

Recent mode coupling theory (MCT) calculations show that if a short-range attractive interaction is added to the pure hard sphere system, one may observe a new type of glass originating from the clustering effect (the attractive glass) as a result of the attractive interaction. This is in addition to the known glass-forming mechanism due to the cage effect in the hard sphere system (the repulsive glass). The calculations also indicate that if the range of attraction is sufficiently short compared to the diameter of the particle, within a certain interval of volume fractions where the two glass-forming mechanisms nearly balance each other, varying the external control parameter, the effective temperature, makes the glass-to-liquid-to-glass reentrance and the glass-to-glass transitions possible. Here we present experimental evidence of both transitions, obtained from small-angle neutron-scattering and photon correlation measurements taken from dense L64 copolymer micellar solutions in heavy water. Varying the temperature in certain predicted volume fraction range triggers a sharp transition between these two different types of glass. In particular, according to MCT, there is an end point (called A3 singularity) of this glass-to-glass transition line, beyond which the long-time dynamics of the two glasses become identical. Our findings confirm this theoretical prediction. Surprisingly, although the Debye-Waller factors, the long-time limit of the coherent intermediate scattering functions, of these two glasses obtained from photon correlation measurements indeed become identical at the predicted volume fraction, they exhibit distinctly different intermediate time relaxation. Furthermore, our experimental results obtained from volume fractions beyond the end point are characterized by the same features as the repulsive glass obtained before the end point. A complete phase diagram giving the boundaries of the structural arrest transitions for L64 micellar system is given.

We summarize a series of experimental results made with the newly developed high resolution X-ray scattering (IXS) instrument on two pure lipid bilayers, including dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC) in both gel and liquid crystal phases, and lipid bilayers containing cholesterol. By analyzing the IXS data based on the generalized three effective eigenmode model (GTEE), we obtain dispersion relations of the high frequency density oscillations (phonons) of lipid molecules in these bilayers. We then compare the dispersion relations of pure lipid bilayers of different chain lengths among themselves and the dispersion relations of pure lipid bilayers with those of the cholesterol containing bilayers. We also compare our experimental results with collective dynamics data generated by computer molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in gel phase and DMPC in liquid crystal phase.

We investigated the application of inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to lipid bilayers. This technique directly measures the dynamic structure factor S(q,omega) which is the space-time Fourier transform of the electron density correlation function of the measured system. For a multiatomic system, the analysis of S(q,omega) is usually complicated. But for multiple bilayers of lipid, S(q,omega) is dominated by chain-chain correlations within individual bilayers. Thus IXS provides a unique probe for the collective dynamics of lipid chains in a bilayer that cannot be obtained by any other method. IXS of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine and dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine + cholesterol at two different concentrations were measured. S(q,omega) was analyzed by three-mode hydrodynamic equations, including a thermal diffusive mode and two propagating acoustic modes. We obtained the dispersion curves for the phonons that represent the collective in-plane excitations of lipid chains. The effect of cholesterol on chain dynamics was detected. Our analysis shows the importance of having a high instrument resolution as well as the requirement of sufficient signal-to-noise ratio to obtain meaningful results from such an IXS experiment. The requirement on signal-to-noise also applies to molecular dynamics simulations.

We present experimental evidence, obtained from small-angle neutron scattering and photon correlation measurements, indicating the existence of two types of structurally arrested (glassy) states in a copolymer micellar system with a short-range interparticle attractive interaction. Within a certain range of micellar volume fractions, a sharp transition between these two types of glass is observed by varying the temperature. Furthermore, we found an end point of this transition line beyond which the two glasses become identical in their local structure and their long-time dynamics. These findings confirm the recent mode-coupling theory predictions regarding the phase behavior of the structurally arrested states for this type of system.

We made small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of a Pluronic L64 micellar system in aqueous solution at high polymer concentrations (wt %), 35%

A model is proposed for the first-, second-, and third-order rotational correlation functions that are required for the computation of the rotational intermediate scattering function for the calculation of incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) spectra from supercooled water. The model is tested against molecular-dynamics data generated from an extended-simple-point-charge model of water and is found to be satisfactory. The model can be used as a practical method for extracting rotational relaxation parameters from QENS spectra measured at large Q from supercooled bulk water or interfacial water in porous materials.

Increasing evidence supports the hypothesis that amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) assembly is a key pathogenic feature of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, understanding the assembly process offers opportunities for the development of strategies for treating this devastating disease. In prior studies, Abeta was found to form micelle-like aggregates under acidic conditions. These structures exhibited an average observed hydrodynamic radius of 7 nm. They were found to be in rapid equilibrium with Abeta monomers or low molecular weight oligomers, and were centers of fibril nucleation. Here the technique of small angle neutron scattering has been used to determine the structure of these Abeta micelles. The data reveal that the micellar assemblies comprise 30-50 Abeta monomers and have elongated geometries. The best fit of the data to a uniform spherocylinder yields a radius approximately 2.4 nm and cylinder length approximately 11 nm. These structure parameters remain constant over more than a decade in concentration range. The concentration independence of the length of the cylindrical aggregate indicates the presence of an internal nonrepetitive structure that spans the entire length of the Abeta assembly.
