Eurozone Dystopia traces the origin of the Eurozone and shows how the historical Franco-German rivalry combined with the growing dominance of neo-liberal economic thinking to create a monetary system that is deeply flawed and destined to fail. It argues that the political class in Europe is trapped in a destructive groupthink which prevents it from seeing their own policy failures. Millions are unemployed as a result and the member states are caught in a cycle of persistent stagnation and rising social instability.

Community archaeology projects have gained popularity for many reasons. In the UK, professional archaeology has championed involving community volunteers in Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) supported archaeological projects. We review two HLF-supported community-led projects, including the positive and measurable outcomes in conjunction with the challenges that each presented. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working with community volunteers. Due to our direct responsibility for supervising the volunteers and all the archaeological aspects of these projects, we are able to analyse their success and delivery, and the benefits and drawbacks of using the HLF for project funding. This includes how they regulate access to funding, and how they evaluate the process. Finally, we examine commercial archaeological companies and the extent to which the HLF holds them accountable for outcomes, questioning how these outcomes feed into archaeological research frameworks and contribute to professional practice.

High-resolution geochronology provides a means to evaluate the timescales of responses to major shifts in Earth history, such as ecosystem recovery following a major impact event or a mass extinction. Additionally, geochronology can be used to correlate sections across the marine and terrestrial realm and around the world. Changes in ecosystems or isotopic composition of deposited rocks will be influenced by local effects, but can also have a global signal. With geochronlogy, the same time interval can be found in distant regions, and if a phenomenon (e.g. a carbon isotope excursion) was global in scope, many different localities each from the same time interval would show the same signal.Here I present high-resolution uranium-lead geochronology pertaining to two mass extinctions: the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction (around 66 million years ago, Ma) and the Permo-Triassic mass extinction (around 252 Ma). In the first chapter, I introduce some of the complexities involved in using the rock record to piece together a picture of life on Earth back in time. Dating volcanic ash deposits (tephra) with uranium-lead geochronology is an important piece of the puzzle. In the second chapter, the chemical, analytical, and statistical methods used are presented in detail. Analyses of several reference materials are included, which illustrate the precision and accuracy attainable with these methods. The third chapter applies these high-resolution dating techniques to the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary in Northeastern Montana. Although one of the volcanic ash deposits in the area has been dated by 238U/206Pb, more than forty distinct volcanic ash deposits have been identified. Here I present new data on 12 samples representing at least 10 distinct tephra, at a precision and accuracy much higher than in the previous uranium-lead work. In the fourth chapter, 238U/206Pb techniques are again applied to volcanic tephra, this time in a section in the Texas Panhandle believed to be of latest Permian age, though possibly earliest Triassic. With extremely few fossils preserved, determining a precise age can only be done through radioisotopic geochronology. One such study used the K-Ar method, but the uncertainties in age were 4 million years. The new ages I have determined place this section within uncertainty (≤500 thousand years) of the global stratotype section and point at Meishan, China, and one tephra is distinctly younger than the boundary.This work lays the foundation for other studies. Paleontologists studying the latest Cretaceous and earliest Paleogene in Northeastern Montana can use the dates provided here to constrain the age of fossil localities and develop a regional biochronology. It also allows for comparison with 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, and the combination of the two can be used to calibrate the geomagnetic polarity timescale. Determining the age of strata in the Texas Panhandle will enable stratigraphers to determine whether shifts in the carbon and oxygen isotope records are occurring at the Permo-Triassic boundary. Paleontologists will also be able to make use of these new dates to guide their interpretation of rare microfossils found in the rocks surrounding the volcanic ash bed.

New Place is the name of the house that William Shakespeare purchased in 1597 and the place in which he died in 1616. The house was constructed in Stratford-upon-Avon over a century previously but had disappeared by 1759 leaving only an empty gap in the street frontage. How much time Shakespeare spent there has long been debated but recent excavation and analysis of the surviving evidence has led to the notion that New Place was carefully chosen by Shakespeare to be his primary residence and the place to live with his family and compose much of his later writing. The importance of Hugh Clopton, the former owner and builder of New Place, and the welcome associations which his name brought to the property, is also debated here. Shakespeare’s motives, his pursuit of status, desire for investment and obligation to his family are all explored through the use of archaeological data and the historical evidence for the house.

This book dismantles the arguments used by policy makers to justify the abandonment of full employment as a valid goal of national governments. Bill Mitchell and Joan Muysken trace the theoretical analysis of the nature and causes of unemployment over the last 150 years and argue that the shift from involuntary to ‘natural rate’ conceptions of unemployment since the 1960s has driven an ideological backlash against Keynesian policy interventions.

The chapters in this book provide coverage of the theoretical underpinnings and methodologies that typify research using a Spatially Integrated Social Science (SISS) approach. This insightful Handbook is intended chiefly as a primer for students and budding researchers who wish to investigate social, economic and behavioural phenomena by giving explicit consideration to the roles of space and place. The majority of chapters provide an emphasis on demonstrating applications of methods, tools and techniques that are used in SISS research, including long-established and relatively new approaches.

Theme ACONTROLLED Flow (CONFLOW) facility is being built to test air-breathing propulsion systems and airframes in simulated flight missions using full-scale hardware. CONFLOW provides reconstituted air to the subsonic duct of a combustor to represent flight variations of flow, total temperature, and pressure. Stored oxygen, nitrogen, and butane are reacted to produce the desired temperature and composition. A series of pressure reductions with combustion in an air generator with nozzle delivers controlled flow to the ramjet combustor. In discussing Annular Shadows (Pleural Rings) in the lungs it is necessary to define our terms. My remarks will be confined to the thin walled air containing rings, and do not apply to ordinary tuberculous cavities. Personally, I prefer to call these rings “air cysts,” as they certainly represent encysted air. They are, undoubtedly, cavities, and stereoscopic views satisfy me that they are in the lung and not between the lung and the chest wall (Radiogram 4). I beg to submit the following theory of their mode of origin. A small bronchus or bronchiole weakened by disease and strained by coughing, becomes perforated and allows air to leak into the connective tissues of the lung. It does not become an interstitial emphysema but a single bubble of air. Let me for a moment draw your attention to the Bramah Press, with which you are doubtless all acquainted. The marble which I described with little comprehension and several errors in a letter to the Athenaeum, 1909, p. 736 (repeating the same words in a popular book on the Revolution in Turkey, 1909), is characterised as a forgery by Professor Calder in the preceding pages. I consider it genuine, a unique monument of the old Anatolian religion, when that almost disused cult was revived in the alliance between the Empire and Paganism against Christianity; and the date of the work is in the fourth century. On that alliance see Aberystwyth Studies, iv. p. 1 f. Several very excellent authorities have on careful inspection pronounced it indubitably genuine: I consulted them, as I have always hated the thought of being in any way connected with a forgery; and I have rejected many forgeries. All the facts collected by Calder in 1913 were known to me in 1909, and many more. I could tell about several other forgeries by Missak, whom I heard of only as ‘the Armenian,’ not as Missak, whether it be a true or false name.

Before returning to graduate school, William Mitchell taught mathematics in the Chicago City College and two rurallibetal arts colleges. He is now completing a doctoral program at Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee, specializing in the mathematics program of the small college. Concurrently he is parttime instructor of mathematics at the Nashville State Technical Institute and he also teaches in the University of Tennessee's College Within the Walls at the Tennessee State Prison. Today's general education mathematics course has its roots in the early 1940s [6] . Growing college enrollments and the demands of a new technology called for reevaluation of the traditional freshman mathematics sequence. Several colleges introduced courses emphasizing the role of mathematics in Western history and culture, testing the assumption that these courses would not only be more interesting and relevant to students in nontechnical fields, but would also permit the traditional freshman courses to better meet the needs of the technically oriented students. Despite mixed reactions to such courses, the distinction between "users" and "appreciators" of mathematics had been made, and an alternative goal for mathematics instruction had been established [22]. In the post-war decade the advocates of the cultural approach continued to press their cause, despite criticism that their courses lacked sufficient mathematical content. A counter-proposal was made for a unified freshman mathematics sequence which would combine the benefits of the cultural approach with the rigor of the traditional offerings [4]. Strains of both approaches are clearly visible in today's texts.
