In this paper, the spatial distribution, pollution degree, ecological toxicity and possible sources of seven potentially toxic elements (PTEs) collected from the surface sediments of Quanzhou Bay (QZB) were analyzed by obtaining concentration measurements. The results indicated that the areas with high Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg concentrations were mainly located in the Luoyang River estuary, while the areas with high contents of Cd and As appeared in the Luoyang River estuary area and in the southern part of QZB, respectively. The contamination indices showed that the Cd pollution degree was slight to serious, while other elements were slightly enriched. The calculation results of the potential ecological risk index (RI) and toxic risk index (TRI) indicated that Cd was the main element posing ecological risk among the PTEs of sediments in QZB, followed by Hg. Moreover, in approximately 30% of the surveyed sites, PTEs exhibited low toxicity to aquatic ecosystems. Finally, the self-organizing map (SOM) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were used to determine the PTEs sources. Natural sources, industrial emissions, and the combustion of fossil fuels were three main sources for PTEs in the surface sediments of QZB. An integrated understanding of pollution, environmental risks, and sources of potentially hazardous metals (PHMs) in coastal sediments is essential for protecting and managing the health of coastal ecosystems. Here, we examined the concentrations of 7 PHMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Zn) in surface sediments from a typical bay under long-term human impacts in southern China, to holistically elaborate the pollution characteristics, environmental risks, and sources of PHMs. The results showed that the mean concentrations (mg/kg) were 7.00 (As), 0.164 (Cd), 79.1 (Cr), 29.3 (Cu), 25.4 (Pb), 0.042 (Hg), and 107.4 (Zn), respectively. PHMs in the surface sediments exhibited decreasing trends from the nearshore towards the offshore sea areas, showing high, moderate, and low concentrations in the inner, middle, and outer bay. Geo-accumulation index demonstrated that Cd was the primary polluted metal, followed by Cu, Hg, Zn, Cr, and Pb. Both modified contamination of degree (mCd) and nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) indicated that the inner bay was the most polluted area. Potential ecological risk index (PERI) and toxic risk index (TRI) illustrated that PHMs have posed adverse threats on the health of the bay, especially the inner bay. However, PERI suggested that Cd and Hg were the main contributors of the adverse effects, while TRI showed that Cu and Cr were. Principle component analysis suggested that As was from natural sources while other PHMs were derived from anthropogenic sources. Positive matrix factorization model further explained that human activities were the major sources, including industrial and marine transport activities (40.5%) and discharge of domestic sewages (29.3%), while natural sources contributed 30.2%. Based on these findings, useful implications are provided for the prevention and control of PHMs pollution and the implementation of relevant management and remediation strategies in coastal bays. Assessment of river water quality is very important for understanding the impact of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. As the second-largest river in China, the Yellow River's water environment is closely related to the social development and water security of northern China. The Huangshui River is a major tributary of the upper Yellow River, and it supplies water to cities in the lower reaches. In this study, a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy neural network was used to evaluate water quality of the Huangshui River, and pollutant sources were analyzed. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) was calculated to assess the heavy metal pollution level, and the health risks posed by heavy metal elements were assessed. The results indicated that the main contaminants in the Huangshui River were ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 –N) and total phosphorus (TP), which was affected by various activities of industry, agriculture, and urbanization, and the maximum concentration of NH 3 –N and TP was 5.90 mg/L and 0.36 mg/L, respectively. The T-S evaluation results of some points in the middle reaches were 3.317 and 3.197, which belonged to Level Ⅳ and the water quality was poor. The concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cr in the river were 0.57–44.58 μg/L, 10–122.50 μg/L and 2–28.67 μg/L, respectively, and they were relatively large. The T-S fuzzy neural network could evaluate water quality, avoiding extreme evaluation results by using fuzzy rules to reduce the influence of pollutant concentrations that are too high or too low. In addition to qualitative categorization of water quality, this approach can also quantitatively assess water quality within a single category. Finer road dust has attracted considerable attention due to its more serious environmental detriment and ecological–health risk than coarser road dust. In this study, the concentrations of nine potentially toxic elements (PTEs, i.e. As, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed in finer road dust with particle size <63 μm (FRD) collected from Shijiazhuang, a typical megacity in north China. Based on this investigation, the contamination levels, ecological–health risks, and sources of PTEs in FRD were comprehensively analyzed and the main pollution factors and areas of the high risks were identified. The results revealed that the average contents of As, Co, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn were significantly greater than the local soil background values. As a whole, the PTEs analyzed in Shijiazhuang FRD exhibited different contamination levels, viz. Hg was moderate to strong contamination; Zn was moderate contamination; Co, Cu and Pb were no-contamination to moderate contamination; As was no–contamination and no–contamination to moderate contamination; Cr, Mn and Ni were uncontaminated. The comprehensive ecological risks of PTEs in most sites were very high. The health risks of PTEs to the local inhabitants fell within safety limits. The pollution source analysis of PTEs showed that As and Hg were primarily derived from coal–related industrial source, which accounted for 27.5% of the total PTEs contents. Cu, Co, Pb, and Zn were mainly associated with traffic sources, which accounted for 26.5%. Mn, Ni, and Cr were principally generated by natural source, which accounted for 46.0%. In this study, a combined ecological floating bed (C-EFB) with alum sludge ceramsite (ASC) was designed to improve the water purification effect of traditional ecological floating beds (T-EFBs). During the ASC preparation stage, alum sludge was shaped into a ball, air-dried, and fired under 600 °C. The physical and chemical properties of the ASC meet the requirements of Artificial Ceramsite Filter Materials for Water Treatment (CJ/T229-2008). This study investigated the increased capability of this new-type artificial substrate (ASC) on the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 +-N), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) from eutrophic landscape water. Compared with the T-EFB, the C-EFB owns a higher purification efficiency. The highest average efficiency of COD, NH 4 +-N, TN and TP removals during the four operating stages was 78.2%, 58.1%, 46.7% and 53.2%, respectively, in the C-EFB, which were all higher than those of 53.5%, 32.4%, 27.2% and 25.8%, respectively, for the T-EFB. Among them, the C-EFB showed a higher advantage in the removal of TP. The results showed that the potential benefits of utilizing ASC in seriously eutrophic bodies of water. With rising concerns in the practical application of biochar for the remediation of environment influenced by various organic contaminants, a critical review to facilitate insights the crucial role that biochar has played in wastewater and polluted soil decontamination is urgently needed. This research therefore aimed to describe different intriguing dimensions of biochar interactions with organic contaminants, which including: (i) an introduction of biochar preparation and the related physicochemical properties, (ii) an overview of mechanisms and factors controlling the adsorption of organic contaminants onto biochar, and (iii) a summary of the challenges and an outlook of the further research needs in this issue. In the light of the survey consequences, the appearance of biochar indicates the potential in substituting the existing costly adsorbents, and it has been proved that biochar is one promising adsorbent for organic pollutants adsorption removal from water and soil. However, some research gaps, such as dynamic adsorption, potential environmental risks, interactions between biochar and soil microbes, novel modification techniques, need to be further investigated to facilitate its practical application. This research will be conductive to better understanding the adsorption removal of organic contaminants by biochar. The production of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) produces a great deal of waste water, and dinitrotoluene sulfonates (DNTs) are the main pollutants in its waste. This paper presents a pilot investigation on the geochemical transformation of DNTs affected by historical wastewater spillage from a typical TNT production company in Northwest China. In the horizontal direction, DNTs diffused from the evaporation pond to the surrounding area of the site, and the concentration of DNTs in the evaporation pond surface soil exceeded 1000 mg/kg. The horizontal distribution of DNTs in the site showed a migration trend to the east and south of evaporation, which was consistent with the terrain of high northwest and low southeast of the site. Due to the high water solubility of pollutants, water flow is the main driving force for the horizontal distribution of DNTs. In the vertical direction, the concentration of pollutants gradually increased with the depth of the soil. DNTs are mainly adsorbed in the third layer (6.0–8.0 m). It can be seen that the accumulation of the 2,4-DNTs-3-SO 3 - is obviously larger than that of the 2,4-DNTs-5-SO 3 -, which may be related to the steric hindrance effect of sulfonic acid groups in the two isomers. Results showed DNTs distribution strongly linked to soil physicochemical properties and the migration of DNTs in soil exhibited obvious heterogeneity in time and space. The carcinogenic risks in surface soil (0–1.5 m) and lower soil (1.5–6.0 m, 6.0–8.0 m) are all higher than 1✕10−6; non-carcinogenic risk surface soil (0–1.5 m) is 4.011✕10, which is greater than 1, indicating that they may cause certain harm to the human body. Selenium (Se) has a dual nature, with beneficial and harmful effects on plants, essential for both humans and animals, playing a crucial role in ecosystem regulation. Insufficient Se in specific terrestrial environments raises concerns due to its potential to cause diseases, while excess Se can lead to severe toxicity. Thus, maintaining an optimal Se level is essential for living organisms. This review focuses first on Se transformation, speciation, and geochemical properties in soil, and then provides a concise overview of Se distribution in Chinese soil and crops, with a focus on the relationship between soil Se levels and parent materials. Additionally, this paper explores Se bioavailability, considering parent materials and soil physicochemical properties, using partial least squares path modeling for analysis. The accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soil poses significant risks to ecosystems and human well-being due to their inherent toxicity, widespread presence, and persistence. The Kangdian metallogenic province, famous for its iron-copper deposits, faces soil pollution challenges due to various potentially toxic elements. This study explored a comprehensive approach that combinescombines the spatial prediction by the two-point machine learning method and ecological-health risk assessment to quantitatively assess the comprehensive potential ecological risk index (PERI), the total hazard index (THI) and the total carcinogenic risk (TCR). The proportions of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) concentrations exceeding the risk screening values (RSVs) were 15.03%, 5.1%, 3.72%, 1.24%, 1.1%, and 0.13%, respectively, across the 725 collected samples. Spatial prediction revealed elevated levels of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, mercury (Hg), and Mn near the mining sites. Potentially toxic elements exert a slight impact on soil, some regions exhibit moderate to significant ecological risk, particularly in the southwest. Children face higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks compared to adults. Mercury poses the highest ecological risk, while chromium (Cr) poses the greatest health hazard for all populations. Oral ingestion represents the highest non-oncogenic and oncogenic risks in all age groups. Adults faced acceptable non-carcinogenic risks. Children in the southwest region confront higher health risks, both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic, from mining activities. It is essential to understand the impact of heavy metals (HMs) present in the surface dust (SD) of kindergartens on children, who are highly sensitive to contaminated dust in cities in their growth stage. A study was conducted on 11 types of HMs present in the SD of 73 kindergartens in Beijing. This study aims to assess the pollution levels and sources of eleven HMs in Beijing's kindergartens surface dust (KSD), and estimate the potential health risks in different populations and sources. The results indicate that Cd has the highest contamination in the KSD, followed by Pb, Zn, Ni, Ba, Cr, and Cu. The sources of these pollutants are identified as industrial sources (23.7%), natural sources (22.1%), traffic sources (30.4%), and construction sources (23.9%). Cancer risk is higher in children (4.02E-06) than in adults (8.93E-06). Notably, Cr is the priority pollutant in the KSD, and industrial and construction activities are the main sources of pollution that need to be controlled. The pollution in the central and surrounding areas is primarily caused by historical legacy industrial sites, transportation, urban development, and climate conditions. This work provides guidance to manage the pollution caused by HMs in the KSD of Beijing. Prolonged exposure to contaminated SD significantly heightens the likelihood of childhood illnesses. Advancements in transportation networks have induced a spatial-temporal convergence effect, accelerating socio-economic elements flow and dismantling the conventional "core-periphery" urbanization gradient. Accessibility of transportation networks emerges as a reliable indicator of urbanization. There has been a growing global and Chinese focus on the various forms of metal pollution in urban soil. This study aims to investigate the driving forces and effects of urbanization factors (Gross Domestic Product (GDP), value added of secondary industries (VA), night light (NL), population density (PD), and road density (Distance)), soil property factors (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total organic carbon (TOC)), and topographic factors (elevation (DEM), aspect, and slope) on toxic heavy metal elements (Cd, As, and Hg) and trace elements (Mn, Ti, V) in surface soil (0-20 cm) across varying accessibility levels in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration. Results reveal significant influence of accessibility on Cd and Hg levels (p < 0.05), with higher accessibility areas displaying elevated element concentrations. According to the evaluation results of the single-factor pollution index, Cd and V have the highest pollution exceedance rates (93.18% and 75.76%, respectively). Moran's Index results highlight typical spatial clustering of elements, with hotspots in areas of high accessibility. Urbanization has led to distinct spatial agglomeration patterns in element concentrations and environmental factors. Geographic detector analysis reveal that in low accessibility areas, metal element pollution and distribution are influenced by a combination of complex factors, including soil properties (pH), terrain conditions (DEM), and the urbanization process (VA). In high accessibility areas, toxic heavy metal elements are primarily driven by urbanization factors, largely influenced by transportation activities, industrial development, and population density, while elements Mn, Ti, and V are still influenced by both natural processes and urbanization activities. Phosphorus and nitrogen pollution from agricultural nonpoint sources heavily burden the water environment, and a scientific calculating system is needed to calculate the pollutant loads under the water pollution treatment. This study established a system to calculate the coefficients of agricultural nonpoint source pollutants into water bodies in the subregion in Poyang Lake basin in the middle reach of the Yangtze River combining with multiple driving factors. Validation results showed that the errors of the typical unit were 30.58% for total phosphorus (TP), 13.43% for total nitrogen (TN) and 33.93% for ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), respectively. The errors of the subregion were 26.92% for TP, 31.83% for TN and 29.15% for NH 3 -N, respectively. Besides, there were higher TP and TN loads in the east area of subregion in both units and county scales, which indicated the heavy phosphorus and nitrogen burden on water environment. In contrast, higher NH 3 -N loads occurred in the north area of subregion. The presence of trace metals (TMs) in agricultural soil has garnered considerable attention due to their potential migration into crops, posing a significant risk to human health. In this study, we examined the concentrations of eight trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the soil and investigated various soil physicochemical characteristics in the Three Rivers Plain region, China. The assessment of the geoaccumulation index (I geo ) for the mean concentration of all trace metals indicated that the soils were generally free from significant TM pollution. However, a noteworthy finding emerged in relation to Hg, where the maximum I geo value suggested moderate pollution levels. Kriging prediction results further indicated that approximately 1.55% of the study area might be impacted by Hg pollution. Moreover, it is prudent to direct attention towards Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Ni, as their I geo values revealed that the region with the highest concentrations of these metals ranged from unpolluted to moderately polluted. This study employed a comprehensive approach, utilizing the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Kriging spatial distribution, and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model to identify the sources of TMs in agricultural soil. The results unveiled that the primary contributors to TM presence were the natural parental materials, alongside industrial activities such as coal mining and coal plant operations, as well as agricultural practices. A comprehensive analysis of content, pollution characteristics, health hazard, distribution, and source of some broadly concerned potentially toxic elements (PTEs, Pb, V, Mn, Cr, Ba, Zn, Ni, and Cu) in surface fine dust with particle size <63 μm (SFD63) from residence communities in Xi'an, a representative valley industrial city, was conducted in this research to analyze the quality of environment and influencing factors of valley industrial cities in China. The average contents of Ba (794.1 mg kg -1 ), Cu (61.3 mg kg -1 ), Pb (99.9 mg kg -1 ), Zn (408.1 mg kg -1 ), Cr (110.0 mg kg -1 ), and Ni (33.4 mg kg -1 ) in SFD63 of Xi'an residence communities surpassed their background contents of local soil. The high enrichment-value regions of PTEs were chiefly located in the regions with high traffic flow, high population density, and areas around industries. Zn and Pb had moderate enrichment, and the overall pollution level of PTEs was unpolluted-to-moderate and moderate pollution. Three source categories (including natural geogenic source, industrial anthropogenic source, and mixed anthropogenic source of transportation, residential activities, and construction) were identified as the predominant sources for the PTEs pollution in SFD63, with the contribution levels of 29.9%, 32.4%, and 37.7%, respectively. The assessment of health risks according to Monte Carlo simulation revealed that the 95% of the non-cancer risk of PTEs to residents (the elderly, working people, and children) was less than the threshold of 1, while the probability of cancer risk exceeding the acceptable threshold of 1E-6 was 93.76% for children, 68.61% for the elderly, and 67.54% for working people. Freshwater resources are becoming increasingly scarce in coastal areas, limiting crop productivity in coastal farmlands. Although the characteristic of crop water use is an important factor for water conservation in coastal farmlands, it has not been studied extensively. This study aimed to depict the water use process of soil-plant systems under saline stress in coastal ecosystems and optimize water management. An intensive observation experiment was performed within China's Yellow River Delta to identify the water use processes and crop coefficients (K C ) and also quantify the impacts of salt stress on crop water use. The results show that shallow groundwater did not contribute to soil water in the whole rotation; K C values for wheat-maize, wheat-sorghum, and wheat-soybean rotation systems were 45.0, 58.4, and 57% less, respectively, than the FAO values. The water use efficiency of the maize (8.70) and sorghum (9.00) in coastal farmlands was higher than that of the soybean (4.37). By identifying the critical periods of water and salt stress, this paper provides suggestions for water-saving and salinity control in coastal farmlands. Our findings can inform the sustainable development of coastal farmlands and provide new insights to cope with aspects of the global food crisis.

Coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which pose a threat to marine ecosystems and human health. In this study, the concentrations of eight PTEs in a typical area of South China were analysed, and their distributions, seasonal variations, pollution degrees, potential health risks and sources in seawater, sediment and organisms were evaluated. The comprehensive pollution index (CPI), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (PERI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) were applied to assess seawater, sediment and organism quality, respectively. The annual mean concentrations of Zn, Hg, Cr and As in the bottom seawater were higher than those in the surface water while those of Pb, Mn and Cu were higher in the surface seawater. The mean content of Hg was higher than the corresponding background value of that in China Shelf Sea sediment. Marine organisms have a high enrichment capacity for Cu, Zn, Cr, Hg, As and Mn in seawater. Based on CPI, the seawater was generally not polluted by PTEs. The PLI and PERI results demonstrated that Hg was the main contamination element in surface sediment. The total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) analysis illustrated that long-term consumption of some fish by children poses a noncarcinogenic health risk, while that risk to adults is negligible. Land use impacts from agriculture, industrialization, and human population should be considered in surface water quality management. In this study, we utilized an integrated statistical analysis approach mainly including a seasonal Mann-Kendall test, clustering analysis, self-organizing map, Boruta algorithm, and positive matrix factorization to the assessment of the interactions between land use types and water quality in a typical catchment in the Huai River Basin, China, over seven years (2012-2019). Spatially, water quality was clustered into three groups: upstream, midstream, and downstream/mainstream areas. The water quality of upstream sites was better than of mid-, down-, and mainstream. Temporally, water quality did not change significantly during the study period. However, the temporal variation in water quality of up-, down-, and mainstream areas was more stable than in the midstream. The interactions between land use types and water quality parameters at the sub-basin scale varied with seasons. Increasing forest/grassland areas could substantially improve the water quality during the wet season, while nutrients such as phosphorus from cropland and developed land was a driver for water quality deterioration in the dry season. Water area was not a significant factor influencing the variations of ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) and total phosphorus (TP) in the wet or dry season, due to the intensive dams and sluices in study area. The parameters TP, and total nitrogen (TN) were principally linked with agricultural sources in the wet and dry seasons. The parameters NH 3 -N in the dry season, and chemical oxygen demand (COD Cr ) in the wet season were mainly associated with point source discharges. Agricultural source, and urban point source discharges were the main causes of water quality deterioration in the study area. Rare earth elements (REEs) concentrated in soils have attracted increasing attention about their impact on soil health as emerging contaminants. However, the sources of REEs enriched in soils are diverse and need to be further investigated. Here, surface soil samples were collected from southern Jiangxi Province, China. REEs contents and soil physicochemical properties were determined, and cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies were calculated. Moreover, we established a model to further identify the main sources of REEs accumulation in the studied soils. Results show that the abundance of soil REEs reveals larger spatial variation, suggesting spatially heterogeneous distribution of REEs. The median content of light REEs in soils (154.5 mg kg -1 ) of the study area was higher than that of heavy REEs and yttrium (35.8 mg kg -1 ). In addition, most of the soil samples present negative Ce anomalies and all the soil samples present negative Eu anomalies implying the combined effect of weathering and potential exogenous inputs on soil REEs. Positive matrix factorization modeling reveals that soil REEs content is primarily influenced by soil parent materials. Potential anthropogenic sources include mining-related leachate, traffic exhaust, and industrial dust. The degree of population-economy coupling and coordination is an important indicator of a region's balanced development. This study examines the evolution of the population-economy coupling coordination pattern in the Yangtze River Economic Belt spanning from 2000 to 2019. It draws from the economic growth stage and related theories, and employs methods such as geographic concentration, center of gravity analysis, and the coupling coordination model. Accordingly, the population and economy of the Yangtze River Economic Belt form a core-periphery, with a decreasing center toward the periphery, and the east higher than the west. The spatial coupling situation of the population-economic center of gravity yields an inverted U-shaped curve, where their center of gravity separates and then converges, and the difference in regional development expands and then shrinks. Moreover, the population center of gravity lags behind that of the economy. The population-economy coupling and coordination degree shows a decreasing trend after rising fluctuations. Further, the study finds that regional economic development, government role, and market-led capital agglomeration are significant drivers of the population-economy coupling and coordination, with the industrial structural influence being spatially heterogeneous.

Exploring the responses of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to land use conversion or reversion is significant for taking effective land use measures to alleviate global warming. A global meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the responses of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions to land use conversion or reversion, and determine their temporal evolution, driving factors, and potential mechanisms. Our results showed that CH 4 and N 2 O responded positively to land use conversion while CO 2 responded negatively to the changes from natural herb and secondary forest to plantation. By comparison, CH 4 responded negatively to land use reversion and N 2 O also showed negative response to the reversion from agricultural land to forest. The conversion of land use weakened the function of natural forest and grassland as CH 4 sink and the artificial nitrogen (N) addition for plantation increased N source for N 2 O release from soil, while the reversion of land use could alleviate them to some degree. Besides, soil carbon would impact CO 2 emission for a long time after land use conversion, and secondary forest reached the CH 4 uptake level similar to that of primary forest after over 40 years. N 2 O responses had negative relationships with time interval under the conversions from forest to plantation, secondary forest, and pasture. In addition, meta-regression indicated that CH 4 had correlations with several environmental variables, and carbon-nitrogen ratio had contrary relationships with N 2 O emission responses to land use conversion and reversion. And the importance of driving factors displayed that CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O response to land use conversion and reversion was easily affected by NH 4 + and soil moisture, mean annual temperature and NO 3 - , total nitrogen and mean annual temperature, respectively. High-technology rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging contaminants have potentially hazardous risks for human health and the environment. Investigating the sorption of REEs on soils is crucial for understanding their migration and transformation. This study evaluated the sorption mechanisms and influencing factors of the rare earth element yttrium (Y) on paddy soil via integrated batch sorption experiments and theoretical modeling analysis. Site energy distribution theory (SEDT) combined with kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm sorption models were applied to illustrate the sorption mechanism. In addition, the effects of phosphorus (P), solution pH, particle size of soil microaggregates, and initial Y content on the sorption processes were evaluated by self-organizing map (SOM) and Boruta algorithm. The sorption kinetic behavior of Y on paddy soil was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic results showed that the Y sorption was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The generalized Langmuir model well described the isotherm data of Y sorption on heterogeneous paddy soil and soil microaggregates surface. The maximum sorption capacity of Y decreased with increasing soil particle size, which may be related to the number of sorption sites for Y on paddy soil and soil microaggregates, as confirmed by SEDT. The heterogeneity of sorption site energy for Y was the highest in the original paddy soil compared with the separated soil microaggregates. The SOM technique and Boruta algorithm highlighted that the initial concentration of Y and coexisting phosphorus played essential roles in the sorption process of Y, indicating that the addition of phosphate fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the Y bioavailability in paddy soil in practice. Potentially hazardous metals (PHMs) in the coastal environment have become a great concern due to their easy bioaccumulation, poor biodegradability and high toxicity. Surface sediment samples were collected in a subtropical bay in South China to analyse the spatial variations, contamination level and potential sources of PHMs. The results indicated that the order of average contents of PHMs in Qinzhou Bay sediment was Zn > Pb > Cr > Cu > As > Hg > Cd. The most important potential ecological risk factor was Hg pollution in the Qinzhou Bay sediments. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model results indicated that Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr mainly originated from natural sources while Hg and As were related to coal fired industrial inputs and petroleum production activities. Comprehensive efficiency analysis of wastewater treatment plants (WWPTs) in the alpine region with harsh environment and poor techniques as well as managing experience could provide targeted and effective improvement evidences for local wastewater treatment industry and help to improve the water quality of downstream reaches. In this paper, slack-based data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) was adopted to assess the operating efficiencies of WWPTs in northeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Results showed that the average efficiency score for all WWPTs was 0.608, and 32.5% of WWPTs were efficient. Some WWPTs had large improvement potentials in operating costs and pollutant removal rates. Lowering expenditures and promoting facility construction for WWPTs to overcome the climate difficulties and improve management level was necessary according to their improvement potentials. In addition, the relative importance of the quantitative influential factors to efficiencies scores calculated by random forest regression (RFR) indicated that design capacity and temperature were important quantitative factors affecting the performance of WWPTs. Furthermore, geographical location and design capacity also had significant influence on the comprehensive efficiency of WWPTs verified by Kruskal-Wallis test. Our results highlight the importance of facilities upgrading, scientific management for WWPTs. The spatial distribution, pollution level, and exposure risk of Pb in the finer dust (particle size < 63 μm) of residential areas in Xi'an, northwest China were investigated in this study. Geographical information systems and geodetector methods were used to analyze the spatial variability of Pb content in the finer dust of Xi'an and its forming mechanism. The enrichment factor was used to assess the extent of Pb pollution, and the hazard index was used to evaluate the health risks to children and adults exposed to Pb. The results showed that the average content of Pb in the finer dust of residential areas in Xi'an was 99.9 mg kg -1 . In the Xi'an urban area, a higher Pb content was mainly found in the finer dust near the Second Ring Road of Xi'an City, and the Pb content in the old town of Xi'an City was relatively lower than that near the Second Ring Road. The results of geodetector analysis indicate that the spatial variability of Pb in the finer dust of the Xi'an urban area was primarily controlled by the interaction among vehicle emissions, daily behavior of residents, and industrial emissions. Pb in the finer dust from residential areas in all districts showed moderate enrichment. The non-cancer risks of Pb in the finer dust were within the safe range for both children and adults. Dismantling and recycling e-waste has been recognized as a potential emission source of rare earth elements (REEs). However, the presence of REEs in typical regional soils has yet to be studied. Given the potential health implications of such soil contamination, it is vital to study the characteristics, spatial distribution, and pollution level of REEs caused by e-waste dismantling as well as determine the influencing mechanism. This study focused on Guiyu Town as an example site, which is a typical e-waste dismantling base. From the site, 39 topsoil samples of different types were collected according to grid distribution points. Soil profiles were also collected in the dismantling and non-dismantling areas. The REE characteristic parameters showed that the REE distribution was abnormal and was affected by multiple factors. The results of the integrated pollution index showed that approximately 61.5% of soil samples were considered to be lightly polluted. Spatial distribution and correlation analysis showed that hot spots of REE-polluted soil coincided with known, main pollution sources. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation (p ≤0.05) between the REE concentration and the distance from the pollution source. E-waste disassembly and recycling greatly affect the physical and chemical properties of the surrounding soil as well as downward migration areas. In the disassembly area, REE accumulated more easily in the surface layer (0-20 cm). Geographical detector results showed that distance factor was the main contribution factor for both light rare earth elements (LREE) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) (q = 34.59% and 53.33%, respectively). REE distribution in soil was nonlinear enhanced by different factors. Taken together, these results showed that e-waste disassembling and recycling not only directly affected the spatial distribution of REEs, but that their distribution was also affected by land use type and soil properties., (Copyright © 2022. The large-scale use of conventional pesticides and fertilizers has put tremendous pressure on agriculture and the environment. In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have become the focus of many fields due to their cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness and high performance, especially in sustainable agriculture. Traditional NPs manufacturing methods are energy-intensive and harmful to environment. In contrast, synthesizing metal-based NPs using plants is similar to chemical synthesis, except the biological extracts replace the chemical reducing agent. This not only greatly reduces the used of traditional chemicals, but also produces NPs that are more economical, efficient, less toxic, and less polluting. Therefore, green synthesized metal nanoparticles (GS-MNPs) are widely used in agriculture to improve yields and quality. This review provides a comprehensive and detailed discussion of GS-MNPs for agriculture, highlights the importance of green synthesis, compares the performance of conventional NPs with GS-MNPs, and highlights the advantages of GS-MNPs in agriculture. The wide applications of these GS-MNPs in agriculture, including plant growth promotion, plant disease control, and heavy metal stress mitigation under various exposure pathways, are summarized. The potential toxicity and ecological risks of rare-earth nanoparticles in the environment have become a concern due to their widespread application and inevitable releases. The integration of hydroponics experiments, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were utilized to investigate the physiological toxicity, uptake and translocation of yttrium oxide nanoparticles (Y 2 O 3 NPs) under different hydroponic treatments (1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg·L -1 of Y 2 O 3 NPs, 19.2 mg·L -1 Y(NO 3 ) 3 and control) in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seedlings. The results indicated that Y 2 O 3 NPs had a phytotoxic effect on tomato seedlings' germination, morphology, physiology, and oxidative stress. The Y 2 O 3 NPs and soluble Y III reduced the root elongation, bud elongation, root activity, chlorophyll, soluble protein content and superoxide dismutase and accelerated the proline and malondialdehyde in the plant with increasing concentrations. The phytotoxic effects of Y 2 O 3 NPs on tomato seedlings had a higher phytotoxic effect than soluble Y III under the all treatments. The inhibition rates of different levels of Y 2 O 3 NPs in shoot and root biomass ranged from 0.2% to 6.3% and 1.0-11.3%, respectively. The bioaccumulation and translocation factors were less than 1, which suggested that Y 2 O 3 NPs significantly suppressed shoot and root biomass of tomato seedlings and easily bioaccumulated in the root. The observations were consistent with the process of concentration-dependent uptake and translocation factor and confirmed by TEM. Y 2 O 3 NPs penetrate the epidermis, enter the cell wall, and exist in the intercellular space and cytoplasm of mesophyll cells of tomato seedlings by endocytic pathway. Moreover, PLS-SEM revealed that the concentration of NPs significantly negatively affects the morphology and physiology, leading to the change in biomass of plants. Ecosystem service value (ESV) is influenced by land use and land cover (LULC), and is closely related to natural conditions and human activities. However, the interactions between human and natural systems and ESV remain unclear, especially concerning widely discussed meteorological and socioeconomic factors. In this study, three periods of LULC patterns (2000, 2010, and 2020) in the Haihe River Basin, northern China, were collected to determine the relationship between changes in LULC and ESV over time. Natural and socioeconomic data associated with ESV were obtained and the structural equation model was used to decouple interactions between these factors. Results showed that the total value of regional ecosystem services has decreased as cultivated land shrunk and artificial surfaces increased over the past two decades. The ESV was significantly decreased in the middle of the basin. The direct effects of meteorological factors and socioeconomic factors on ESV were positive (0.094) and negative (-0.203), respectively. The indirect effect of socioeconomic factors on ESV through meteorological and LULC factors was 0.149. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that under the dominance of LULC, interactions between natural and socioeconomic factors affected ESV in a complex manner. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the most fragile and susceptible areas to climate change and human disturbances in the world. Here, a total of 48 soil samples were obtained from areas of different land uses within a typical basin in eastern Qinghai-Tibet, China. The selected potentially toxic elements (PTEs, including Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) contents were analyzed to explore their spatial patterns, ecological risks, and then the effects of land use types on these elements were assessed by self-organizing map (SOM) and random forest regression (RFR) models, and the main sources were revealed using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Results showed that mean concentrations of selected PTEs in surface soils were higher than local background values and those of subsurface soils. The low-degree ecological risk was obtained with comparatively high risks in the north and south of the study area. The results of the SOM and RFR models revealed that land use types affected the redistribution of PTEs in surface soil. The PMF model demonstrated that these PTEs were mainly derived from natural sources (46.7%), traffic emissions (31.2%), and industrial and agricultural inputs (22.1%). Natural sources were the essential contributors for these soil PTEs, especially for Cr. In addition to natural sources, traffic sources made great contributions for Cd, Pb, and Zn elements, while the enrichment of Cu was mainly related to industrial and agricultural activities., (© 2021. Deteriorating lake water quality has become a serious environmental issue around the globe. Heavy metals dissolved in the overlying water of lakes are notably more toxic than those found in lake sediment. Given this, we sought to better understand the characteristics of particular major ion and dissolved heavy metal in Dongting Lake-the second largest freshwater lake in China. Overlying water samples were collected from Dongting Lake to investigate the major ion geochemistry and to examine the relationship between the major ions and dissolved heavy metals. Chemical analysis of the overlying water showed that the average cation concentration was the highest for Ca 2+ , followed by Mg 2+ , Na + , and K + . Similarly, the highest anion concentration was SO 4 2- , followed by Cl - , NO 3 - , and HCO 3 - . Total dissolved solids in the overlying water of Dongting Lake ranged from 66.19 to 159.20 mg/L, with an average value of 93.13 mg/L. The predominant hydrochemical type was Ca-SO 4 . The mean concentrations of dissolved heavy metal in both surface and deep waters decreased in the following order: Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cd. Importantly, all of the selected heavy metals tested in the overlying water were lower than the corresponding toxicity reference values. Co-occurrence network analyses were performed and compared the correlations between all measured major ions and heavy metals. Results of the subsequent principal component analyses revealed that heavy metal levels in the aquatic environment primarily originated from natural processes and were enhanced by anthropogenic activities.

Modern farming practice features extensive overuse of additives in animal feed. Subsequent use of manure as a fertilizer has resulted in significant heavy metal accumulation in agricultural soil, which is particularly apparent in areas of intensive farming. Here, samples of dairy feed, manure, water, and soil were collected from four intensive dairy farms in China and analyzed to assess selected heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd). Results revealed that all feed samples contained the selected heavy metals, attesting to the wide use of additives during intensive dairy farming. The average Cr and Pb concentrations were 6.1 to 17.1 times greater than their recommended guidelines. Overall, average heavy metal concentrations in manure decreased in the following order: Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd. Using data obtained from the sequential extraction procedure, proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), metal bioavailability also decreased according to the following order: Pb (69.4%) > Cr (63.7%) > Ni (60.8%) > Cu (53.4%) > Zn (50.0%) > Cd (34.5%). Heavy metal levels in sampled wastewater were also relatively high; however, surface and well water levels were relatively low. Although use of manure in dairy farming has not resulted in serious pollution until now, Zn, Cu, and Cd are all known to pose significant risk to soil quality. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated that heavy metal levels in soil originated predominantly from parent soil materials and were then enhanced by anthropogenic sources.

Particulate pollution, especially PM 2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter of 2.5 μm or less), has received increased attention in China recently. In this study, PM 2.5 samples were collected in August 2013 and April 2014 from different regions of Baotou, the largest rare earth elements (REEs) processing city in northern China. The concentrations and distribution patterns of REEs in PM 2.5 were analyzed, and the inhalation exposure to REEs associated with PM 2.5 was assessed. The results showed that the REEs levels were 56.9 and 15.3 ng m -3 in August 2013 and April 2014, respectively. These values are much higher than those in non-REEs mining areas. The distribution patterns of REEs exhibited LREE enrichment. The Eu and Ce anomalies displayed slightly positive and negative values, respectively, which were in accordance with the background soil and ore. The average daily intake amounts of REEs for population through inhalation exposure of PM 2.5 in Baotou were in the range of 5.09 × 10 -7 to 2.25 × 10 -5 mg kg -1 day -1 .

The lack of management in small-scale mining operations has the potential for negative repercussions, e.g., mine collapses, compared with well-regulated large-scale mines. Here, we used an in vitro model to investigate heavy metal soil pollution characteristics and their attendant health risks in an abandoned, small-scale lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) mine located in southwestern China that had suffered from collapse. Our results showed the following: (1) Even the mine had been closed for many years, the soil was still heavily polluted by Pb, cadmium (Cd), and Zn, and there is a risk of secondary pollution. Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations in the mining areas were all approximately 22-42 times higher than the background soil levels of Guangxi Province. (2) Cd had the largest bioaccessibility, and mining areas tend to have soils containing more bioaccessible metals (78 ± 14%, 27 ± 4%, and 38 ± 12% for Cd, Pb, and Zn in gastric phase and 40 ± 12%, 10 ± 5%, and 19 ± 8% in intestinal phase correspondingly). (3) Results of a stepwise, multiple regression analysis revealed that the total soil content of the three metals (Pb, Zn, and Cd), TOC (total organic carbon), soil composition, and Mn content were the main impact factors for the Pb, Cd, and Zn soil bioaccessibility in study area (R 2  = 0.37~0.93). (4) A health risk assessment based on Pb, Cd, and Zn bioaccessibility indicated that the health risk for people in mine area is not high (HI is 1.07 at most and CR 2.40E-6 at most for children).
