Problems with electric furnace processing of Zambian, Congolese and Bushveld ores are outlined with reference to Panda electric-furnace cobalt production slags grading 0.4% Co, 0.3% Cu, Big Hill Cu-CO slag results with grades of 25-30% Co, and Chambishi processing of Nkana slags grading 0.86% Co, 1.16% Cu to achieve 5-14% Co. The development is described of a smelting process at the Russian Gipronikel Institute for the production of blister copper and cobalt alloy from three oxidised copper-cobalt ores and concentrates of grade ranges 13.6-29.0% Cu and 1. 23-2.10% Co, with 2.84-4.82% Fe, 0.38-1.02% S and 36.5-45.6% SiO2. Shinkolobwe cobalt hydrates containing 1-2% Cu, 3-9% Co, 2-3% Fe, 2-4% Ni and 4-11% S are retreated in electric furnaces at Panda, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire) under a reducing atmosphere. Slag and scraps from fire refining of broken cobalt cathodes from the Shituru plant are also added to the feed for cobalt recovery. The matte and alloy are sold to Gecamines customers for hydrometallurgical processing. Due to the variation in the feed composition and operating conditions of the smelter a large quantity of unsaleable matte with unacceptable Fe content is often produced. Tests were carried out on the removal of Fe by controlled oxidation, taking into account the thermodynamic distribution of Co, Ni and Cu between matte and slag.
