Liposomes composed of rice (RL) and soybean (SL) lecithins were produced by reverse phase evaporation and used for the encapsulation of phenolic extracts from Spirulina LEB-18 (S-RL and S-SL for liposomes of rice and soybean lechitin, respectively). Liposomes were characterized in terms of size distribution, polydispersity index, and ζ-potential; the chemical interactions between the phenolic compounds from Spirulina and liposomes were evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to evaluate their crystallinity pattern. The release behavior of phenolic extracts was evaluated under two different pH conditions. Afterwards, in vitro digestibility of liposomes was evaluated in a dynamic gastrointestinal system. Liposomes exhibited high encapsulation efficiency (88.28% and 97.35% for S-RL and S-SL, respectively) and sizes ranging between 250 and 291 nm, showing to be good candidates for the encapsulation of phenolic extracts obtained from microalgae. Results showed that liposomes are stable at low pH values and that they are able to resist to the stomach conditions but they lose their integrity under intestinal conditions. This work increases the knowledge about the effects of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on liposomes and provides important information for the design of liposome formulations aiming their application in pharmaceutical and food applications., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Biomass harvesting is one of the most expensive steps of the whole microalgal production pipeline. Therefore, the present work aimed to understand the effect of salinity on the growth performance, biochemical composition and sedimentation velocity of Tetraselmis sp. CTP4, in order to establish an effective low-cost pilot-scale harvesting system for this strain. At lab scale, similar growth performance was obtained in cultures grown at salinities of 5, 10 and 20 g L -1 NaCl. In addition, identical settling velocities (2.4-3.6 cm h -1 ) were observed on all salinities under study, regardless of the growth stage. However, higher salinities (20 g L -1 ) promoted a significant increase in lipid contents in this strain compared to when this microalga was cultivated at 5 or 10 g L -1 NaCl. At pilot-scale, cultures were cultivated semi-continuously in 2.5-m 3 tubular photobioreactors, fed every four days, and stored in a 1-m 3 harvesting tank. Upon a 24-hour settling step, natural sedimentation of the microalgal cells resulted in the removal of 93% of the culture medium in the form of a clear liquid containing only vestigial amounts of biomass (0.07 ± 0.02 g L -1 dry weight; DW). The remaining culture was recovered as a highly concentrated culture (19.53 ± 4.83 g L -1 DW) and wet microalgal paste (272.7 ± 18.5 g L -1 DW). Overall, this method provided an effective recovery of 97% of the total biomass, decreasing significantly the harvesting costs.

Ecological communities that experience stable climate conditions have been speculated to preserve more specialized interspecific associations and have higher proportions of smaller ranged species (SRS). Thus, areas with disproportionally large numbers of SRS are expected to coincide geographically with a high degree of community-level ecological specialization, but this suggestion remains poorly supported with empirical evidence. Here, we analysed data for hummingbird resource specialization, range size, contemporary climate, and Late Quaternary climate stability for 46 hummingbird-plant mutualistic networks distributed across the Americas, representing 130 hummingbird species (ca 40% of all hummingbird species). We demonstrate a positive relationship between the proportion of SRS of hummingbirds and community-level specialization, i.e. the division of the floral niche among coexisting hummingbird species. This relationship remained strong even when accounting for climate, furthermore, the effect of SRS on specialization was far stronger than the effect of specialization on SRS, suggesting that climate largely influences specialization through species' range-size dynamics. Irrespective of the exact mechanism involved, our results indicate that communities consisting of higher proportions of SRS may be vulnerable to disturbance not only because of their small geographical ranges, but also because of their high degree of specialization., (© 2016 The Author(s).)

This article seeks to analyze the intention of mothers to breastfeed and the prospects for introduction of complementary food in the first year of life. A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2010 at the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Pelotas in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were obtained through a standardized questionnaire, containing questions about socioeconomic conditions, breastfeeding and complementary feeding. 170 mothers were enlisted, with a mean age of 26.5 ± 5.8 years old. Among them, 99% had received prenatal medical care and only 49% recalled having received information about breastfeeding and/or supplementary feeding during the care. All of the mothers intended to breastfeed exclusively for a mean time of 5.5 ± 1.6 months. Years of schooling, mothers who do not work outside the home, lower maternal age and receiving information about breastfeeding during prenatal care were associated with longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Regarding complementary food, bean soup was the food most intended for the child's first year of life, with an acceptance of 99.41%, while tea was the one with the earliest intention. The duration of breastfeeding was below the WHO guidelines, and complementary food was considered to be misguided.

Introduction. Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) is an accurate predictor of mortality in patients with cirrhosis, and has been used on liver allocation in Brazil since 2006. However, its impact on organ allocation, waiting list and post-transplant mortality is still poorly characterized. This study aimed to assess the impact of implementation of the MELD system on liver allocation and mortality after liver transplantation (LT) in Southern Brazil. Material and methods. Adult patients with chronic liver disease on the waiting list for primary deceased-donor LT were divided into two cohorts (pre- and post-MELD implementation) according to the date of waiting list placement. Disease severity, as assessed by MELD score at placement, was similar in both cohorts. Patients were followed for at least 18 months to assess the outcomes of interest (death/LT). Results. Higher MELD scores correlated with waiting list mortality, which increased 20% with each additional point (HR 1.2; 95%CI 1.14-2.26; p < 0.001). Waiting list mortality was 30.9% before and 21.7% after MELD implementation (nonsignificant). Transplant rate increased after MELD implementation (52 vs. 40%, p = 0.002). After excluding patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, mean MELD scores at LT were significantly higher in the MELD era (p < 0.01). There was no significant correlation between MELD scores at LT and post-LT survival. During 18-month follow-up, post-LT mortality rate was 25.4% before and 20% after MELD implementation (nonsignificant). Conclusion. MELD implementation was associated with a reduction in waiting list mortality. Although sicker patients received LT in the MELD era, post-transplant survival was similar in both periods.

Context: Alcoholists present an increase of iron hepatic concentration, although the responsible mechanisms for this deposition are still unknown. Despite the extensive literature related on the iron absorption in different pathological conditions, the effect of chronic ethanol consumption are still not conclusive and not completely understood., Objective: To verify the effect of chronic ethanol ingestion on duodenal absorption of iron., Methods: Ten male Swiss mice were divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 5) - control, and group 2 (n = 5) - water consumption with ethanol, as only water source. The animals were followed during 120 days. After this period, the duodenum was isolated and saline solution containing ascorbate of iron II in the 0,016 concentration of mg of iron element was infused. The effluent was collected in times 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 minutes. The results were analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The significance was set for P<0.05., Results: No difference was found between iron absorption as well as iron absorption curves in groups 1 and 2., Conclusion: The chronic consumption of ethanol did not alter iron absorption.

Introduction: Substantial medical research has established an inverse relationship between quality of life and illness. However, there exists minimal evidence for such a connection in the context of stable and controlled diseases., Objective: We wished to correlate multimorbidity with quality of life for elderly patients who suffer from stable chronic diseases., Methods: We used a tool to evaluate quality of life, namely World Health Organization quality of life-BRIEF, together with a scale of multimorbidity known as the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale - Geriatric Version. Furthermore, the quality of life data were correlated with scores recorded on the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale - Geriatric Version, the number of drugs used, and individual perceptions of health and age., Results: We studied 104 elderly patients who suffered from chronic diseases. The patients had exhibited neither acute events nor secondary complications, their cognition was intact, and they were functionally independent. The Cumulative Illness Rating Scale - Geriatric Version showed an inverse correlation with the physical domain (p= 0.008) and a tendency toward an inverse correlation with the psychological domain (p= 0.052). Self-perception of health showed a high correlation with the physical domain (p= 0.000), psychological domain (p= 0.000) and environmental domain (p= 0.000). The number of drugs used correlated only with the physical domain (p= 0.004). Age and social domain showed a tendency toward a positive correlation (p= 0.054)., Discussion: We uncovered an inverse relationship between quality of life and multimorbidity in a group of patients who suffered from stable chronic diseases, with no functional limitations, pain or complications. Our data suggest that a patient's knowledge that they have a certain clinical condition changes their subjective assessment of quality of life in the related domain., Conclusion: The perceived quality of life of the sample was affected by multimorbidity in the physical domain, with a tendency toward commensurate effects in the psychological domain.

This study evaluated the influence of the pulp protection technique on clinical performance of amalgam restorations after three years, with particular reference to post-operative sensitivity and secondary caries. One hundred and twenty (120) Class II amalgam restorations (68 premolars, 52 molars; 78 MOD, 42 OD/MO) were placed in 30 participants (four restorations per participant). The restorations were divided into four groups according to the pulp protection technique used: copal varnish; 2% neutral sodium fluoride; adhesive resin and no pulp protection. The parameters evaluated were post-operative sensitivity, staining of the dental structure, tooth vitality, partial or total loss of the restoration and secondary caries. One hundred and eight (108) restorations were available for evaluation after three years. No partial or total loss of restorations had occurred; all teeth were vital, no tooth structure staining or secondary caries was detected in any of the restored teeth. Post-operative sensitivity was observed only in two restorations at baseline and at seven-days. The three-year clinical performance of teeth restored with a high copper dispersed phase amalgam was not affected by the choice of pulp protection technique.
