We report on a form of gas-phase anion action spectroscopy based on infrared multiple photon electron detachment and subsequent capture of the free electrons by a neutral electron scavenger in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometer. This method allows one to obtain background-free spectra of strongly bound anions, for which no dissociation channels are observed. The first gas-phase spectra of acetate and propionate are presented using SF6as electron scavenger and a free electron laser as source of intense and tunable infrared radiation. To validate the method, we compare infrared spectra obtained through multiple photon electron detachment/attachment and multiple photon dissociation for the benzoate anion. In addition, different electron acceptors are used, comparing both associative and dissociative electron capture. The relative energies of dissociation (by CO2loss) and electron detachment are investigated for all three anions by DFT and CCSD(T) methods. DFT calculations are also employed to predict vibrational frequencies, which provide a good fit to the infrared spectra observed. The frequencies of the symmetric and antisymmetric carboxylate stretching modes for the aliphatic carboxylates are compared to those previously observed in condensed-phase IR spectra and to those reported for gas-phase benzoate, showing a strong influence of the solution environment and a slight substituent effect on the antisymmetric stretch. We present the IR spectrum of the gas-phase C60−anion. The C60−anions are mass-selected and trapped in an ion cyclotron mass spectrometer cell. The spectrum is obtained by recording the yield of electrons following infrared multiple photon absorption and subsequent electron detachment of the anions. Two bands are observed that correlate to two of the four IR-allowed transitions in neutral C60. The results show that the higher frequency band is strongly shifted from its position in neutral C60and is a sensitive marker for the charge state. The band positions and intensities are compared to results obtained by theory as well as to known bands in solid samples and good agreement is found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multiple CF bond character of PhCFMe +ions has been examined by means of theory, vibrational spectroscopy of the gaseous ions, and unimolecular decomposition chemistry. Atoms in Molecules analysis of DFT wave functions gives a CF bond order of n= 1.25 (as compared with n= 1.38 for Me 2CF +, relative to n= 1 for fluoromethane and n= 2 for diatomic CF +), which is consistent with calculations of adiabatic CF stretching frequencies (ν CF). Experimental gas phase IR spectra, recorded by means of resonant multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) using a free-electron laser connected to an FTICR mass spectrometer, show good agreement with predicted band positions for five deuterated isotopomers of PhCFMe +. Metastable ion decompositions of deuterated analogues of PhCFMe +show the same HF/DF loss patterns as those produced by IRMPD. The evidence supports the conclusion that PhCFMe ions retain structural integrity until they become sufficiently excited to dissociate, whereupon they undergo intramolecular hydrogen scrambling that is competitive with HF/DF expulsion. Relative rates of hydrogen transposition and unimolecular dissociation are extracted from relative experimental fragment ion abundances. The predominant decomposition pathway is inferred to operate via a five-center transition state, as opposed to a four-center transition state for HF loss from gaseous Me 2CF +. Wavelength-selective infrared multiple-photon photodissociation (WS-IRMPD) was used to study isotopically-labeled ions generated by McLafferty rearrangement of nicotinyl-glycine-tert-butyl ester and betaine-glycine-tert-butyl ester. The tert-butyl esters were incubated in a mixture of D2O and CH3OD to induce solution-phase hydrogen-deuterium exchange and then converted to gas-phase ions using electrospray ionization. McLafferty rearrangement was used to generate the free-acid forms of the respective model peptides through transfer of an H atom and elimination of butene. The specific aim was to use vibrational spectra generated by WS-IRMPD to determine whether the H atom remains at the acid group, or migrates to one or more of the other exchangeable sites. Comparison of the IRMPD results in the region from 1200–1900 cm−1 to theoretical spectra for different isotopically-labeled isomers clearly shows that the H atom is situated at the C-terminal acid group and migration to amide positions is negligible on the time scale of the experiment. The results of this study suggest that use of the McLafferty rearrangement for peptide esters could be an effective approach for generation of H-atom isotope tracers, in situ, for subsequent investigation of intramolecular proton migration during peptide fragmentation studies. Determining the structure and dynamics of large biologically relevant molecules is one of the key challenges facing biology. Although X-ray crystallography (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) yield accurate structural information, they are of limited use when sample quantities are low. Mass spectrometry (MS) on the other hand has been very successful in analyzing biological molecules down to atto-mole quantities and has hence begun to challenge XRD and NMR as the key technology in the life sciences. This trend has been further assisted by the development of MS techniques that yield structural information on biomolecules. Of these techniques, collision-induced dissociation (CID) and hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) are among the most popular. Despite advances in applying these techniques, little direct experimental evidence had been available until recently to verify their proposed underlying reaction mechanisms. The possibility to record infrared spectra of mass-selected molecular ions has opened up a novel avenue in the structural characterization of ions and their reaction products. On account of its high pulse energies and wide wavelength tunability, the free electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX) at FOM Rijnhuizen has been shown to be ideally suited to study trapped molecular ions with infrared photo-dissociation spectroscopy. In this paper, we review recent experiments in our laboratory on the infrared spectroscopic characterization of reaction products from CID and HDX, thereby corroborating some of the reaction mechanisms that have been proposed. In particular, it is shown that CID gives rise to linear fragment ion structures which have been proposed for some time, but also yields fully cyclical ring structures. These latter structures present a possible challenge for using tandem MS in the sequencing of peptides/proteins, as they can lead to a scrambling of the amino acid sequence information. In gas-phase HDX of an amino acid it is shown that the structure can be changed from a charge solvated to a zwitterionic structure, thereby demonstrating that HDX can be an invasive technique, in fact changing the structure of the analyte. We report the first IR spectroscopic observation of carboxylate stretching modes in free space, i.e., in the complete absence of solvent or counterions. Gas-phase spectra of a series of benzoate anions have been recorded and compared to condensed-phase spectra, revealing the profound influence of the environment on the symmetric and antisymmetric carboxylate stretch modes. Gas-phase coronene cations () can be sequentially hydrogenated with up to 24 additional H atoms, inducing a gradual transition from a planar, aromatic molecule toward a corrugated, aliphatic species. The mass spectra of hydrogenated coronene cations show that molecules with odd numbers of additional hydrogen atoms (nH) are dominant, with particularly high relative intensity for “magic numbers” nH = 5, 11, and 17, for which hydrogen atoms have the highest binding energies. Reaction barriers and binding energies strongly affect the hydrogenation sequence and its site specificity. In this contribution, we monitor this sequence experimentally by the evolution of infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of gaseous with nH = 3–11, obtained using an infrared free electron laser coupled to a Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometer. For weakly hydrogenated systems (nH = 3, 5) multiple-photon absorption mainly leads to loss of H atoms (and/or H2). With increasing nH, C2H2 loss becomes more relevant. For nH = 9, 11, the carbon skeleton is substantially weakened and fragmentation is distributed over a large number of channels. A comparison of our IRMPD spectra with density functional theory calculations clearly shows that only one or two hydrogenation isomers contribute to each nH. This confirms the concept of hydrogenation occurring along very specific sequences. In this work we report on high-resolution IR absorption studies that provide a detailed view on how the peripheral structure of irregular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) affects the shape and position of their 3 μm absorption band. For this purpose, we present mass-selected, high-resolution absorption spectra of cold and isolated phenanthrene, pyrene, benz[a]antracene, chrysene, triphenylene, and perylene molecules in the 2950–3150 cm−1 range. The experimental spectra are compared with standard harmonic calculations and anharmonic calculations using a modified version of the SPECTRO program that incorporates a Fermi resonance treatment utilizing intensity redistribution. We show that the 3 μm region is dominated by the effects of anharmonicity, resulting in many more bands than would have been expected in a purely harmonic approximation. Importantly, we find that anharmonic spectra as calculated by SPECTRO are in good agreement with the experimental spectra. Together with previously reported high-resolution spectra of linear acenes, the present spectra provide us with an extensive data set of spectra of PAHs with a varying number of aromatic rings, with geometries that range from open to highly condensed structures, and featuring CH groups in all possible edge configurations. We discuss the astrophysical implications of the comparison of these spectra on the interpretation of the appearance of the aromatic infrared 3 μm band, and on features such as the two-component emission character of this band and the 3 μm emission plateau. We report on an experimental and theoretical investigation of the importance of anharmonicity in the 3-μm CH stretching region of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. We present mass-resolved, high-resolution spectra of the gas-phase cold (∼4 K) linear PAH molecules naphthalene, anthracene, and tetracene. The measured IR spectra show a surprisingly high number of strong vibrational bands. For naphthalene, the observed bands are well separated and limited by the rotational contour, revealing the band symmetries. Comparisons are made to the harmonic and anharmonic approaches of the widely used Gaussian software. We also present calculated spectra of these acenes using the computational program SPECTRO, providing anharmonic predictions with a Fermi-resonance treatment that utilizes intensity redistribution. We demonstrate that the anharmonicity of the investigated acenes is strong, dominated by Fermi resonances between the fundamental and double combination modes, with triple combination bands as possible candidates to resolve remaining discrepancies. The anharmonic spectra as calculated with SPECTRO lead to predictions of the main bands that fall within 0.5% of the experimental frequencies.
