Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of an injectable lyophilized articular cartilage matrix (LACM) which is in the form of cartilage powder that may increase the convenience of use and become unaffected by donor site morbidity as a potential filler., Methods: The safety test was conducted using 20 rabbits with an intravascular embolization model. Commonly used commercial hyaluronic acid (HA), acellular dermal matrix (ADM), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and polylactic acid (PLA) products were selected for comparison of efficacy and adverse effect of LACM. The efficacy test was performed using 30 mice subcutaneous buttock-injection model. Gross assessments of the changes in size of injected materials and histological examinations were conducted., Results: Regarding the safety test, in one rabbit in the HA group, complete blurring occurred in the left eye, and necrosis of the posterior auricular artery was observed in one rabbit in the ADM group. In the ADM, severe ecchymosis around the injection sites was observed, and the bruises lasted longer than in the other groups. The LACM exhibited faster bruise resolution. Comparing the changes in size between weeks 4 and 12 in the mouse model, no significant changes in size were observed in the LACM (p = 0.359), HA (p = 0.421), and ADM (p = 0.097), but a significant change was observed in the PMMA (p = 0.001). In the histological examination, LACM exhibited well-demarcated margins with good biocompatibility., Conclusion: The LACM shows potential as a facial filler according to the in vivo safety and efficacy tests LEVEL OF EVIDENCE V: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each submission to which Evidence-Based Medicine rankings are applicable. Objectives: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to evaluate hypotensive agents in terms of their adverse effects and associations with perioperative morbidity in patients undergoing nasal surgery., Methods: Two authors independently searched databases (Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane databases) up to February 2020 for randomized controlled trials comparing the perioperative administration of a hypotensive agent with a placebo or other agent. The outcomes of interest for this analysis were intraoperative morbidity, operative time, intraoperative bleeding, hypotension, postoperative nausea/vomiting, and postoperative pain. Both a standard pairwise meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were conducted., Results: Our analysis was based on 37 trials. Treatment networks consisting of six interventions (placebo, clonidine, dexmedetomidine, beta-blockers, opioids, and nitroglycerine) were defined for the network meta-analysis. Dexmedetomidine resulted in the greatest differences in intraoperative bleeding (-0.971; 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.161 to -0.781), intraoperative fentanyl administration (-3.683; 95% CI, -4.848 to -2.518), and postoperative pain (-2.065; 95% CI, -3.170 to -0.960) compared with placebo. The greatest difference in operative time compared with placebo was achieved with clonidine (-0.699; 95% CI, -0.977 to -0.421). All other agents also had beneficial effects on the measured outcomes. Dexmedetomidine was less likely than other agents to cause adverse effects., Conclusion: This study demonstrated the superiority of the systemic use of dexmedetomidine as a perioperative hypotensive agent compared with the other five tested agents. However, the other agents were also superior to placebo in improving operative time, intraoperative bleeding, and postoperative pain.

Aims: To investigate the effects of the location and size of tympanic membrane (TM) perforation and middle ear cavity volume on conductive hearing loss in patients with TM perforation., Methods: Data were collected via a retrospective medical chart review., Results: We enrolled 128 patients with a mean age of 45.6 ± 10.1 years. The mean perforation size was 21.2 ± 8.6% of the TM area, and the mean air-bone gap (ABG) was 20.2 ± 8.6 dB HL on pure tone audiometry. Patients were divided into two groups based on mean ABG. Patients with a large ABG had a significantly larger TM perforation area and smaller mastoid volume. The TM perforation was most commonly located in the central section. However, regression analyses showed that the proportion of the perforated TM area was the only independent predictor of a large ABG (odds ratio, 1.053; 95% confidence interval, 1.022-1.085; p = 0.001). When we analyzed the frequencies in which hearing loss occurred due to TM perforation, we confirmed that hearing loss occurred mainly in the low-frequency range., Conclusion: In patients with TM perforation, conductive hearing loss occurs mainly at low frequencies and in proportion to the size of the TM perforation., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Background: Articular cartilage injury has a poor repair ability and limited regeneration capacity with therapy based on articular chondrocytes (ACs) implantation. Here, we validated the hypothesis that human nasal septum-derived chondrocytes (hNCs) are potent therapeutic agents for clinical use in cartilage tissue engineering using an injectable hydrogel, type I collagen (COL1)., Methods: We manufactured hNCs incorporated in clinical-grade soluble COL1 and investigated their clinical potential as agents in an articular defect model., Results: The hNCs encapsulated in COL1 (hNC-collagen) were uniformly distributed throughout the collagen and showed much greater growth rate than hACs encapsulated in collagen for the 14 days of culture. Fluorescent staining of hNC-collagen showed high expression levels of chondrocyte-specific proteins under clinical conditions. Moreover, a negative mycoplasma screening result were obtained in culture of hNC-collagen. Notably, implantation of hNC-collagen increased the repair of osteochondral defects in rats compared with implantation of collagen only. Many human cells were detected within the cartilage defects., Conclusion: These results provide reliable evidences supporting for clinical applications of hNC-collagen in regenerative medicine for cartilage repair.

Introduction: Tranexamic acid is a hemostatic agent, which inhibits fibrin degradation, which may be beneficial in controlling bleeding during surgery., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide a meta-analysis and review of the effects of tranexamic acid on hemorrhage and surgical fields and side effects on patients during endoscopic sinus surgery., Methods: Two authors independently searched six databases (Medline, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Cochrane library) from the start of article collection until July 2018. Postoperative complications such as intraoperative bleeding, operative time, hypotension, nausea, vomiting, and coagulation profile were included in the analysis of tranexamic acid (Treatment Group) and placebo (Control Group) during the operation., Results: The amount of blood loss during surgery was statistically lower in the treatment group compared to the placebo group, and the surgical field quality was statistically higher in the treatment group than in the placebo group. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in operation time, hemodynamics, or coagulation profile between groups. In addition, tranexamic acid had no significant effect on vomiting and thrombosis compared to the Control Group., Conclusion: This meta-analysis has shown that topical administration of tranexamic acid can reduce the amount of bleeding during surgery and improve the overall quality of the surgery. Hemodynamic instability during surgery, vomiting after surgery, or abnormal clotting profile were not reported. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of high-resolution T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (T2wi) in terms of detecting vestibular schwannoma compared with gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MRI (GdT1wi)., Data Sources: Five databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane database)., Data Selection: Two authors independently searched five databases up to January 2019 on diagnosis of vestibular schwannomas via T2wi., Data Extraction: In the included studies, tumor diameters reported using T2wi were compared with those revealed by GdT1wi and correlation coefficients were calculated. Data on true-positives, true-negatives, false-positives, and false-negatives were extracted from the relevant articles. Methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 tool. Inter-rater agreement among different observers and intra-rater agreement among different measurements made by a single observer was assessed., Data Synthesis: Outcomes subjected to analysis included diagnostic accuracy (the diagnostic odds ratio); summary receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the curve values. The summary intra-class correlation coefficient was used for various random-effects models. The quality of each study was analyzed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 tool., Conclusions: T2wi performed without the use of a contrast agent is a highly accurate diagnostic and monitor tool compared with GdT1wi and also demonstrated high reliability. However, further studies are required to confirm the results of this study.

Background: In this study, we manufactured a complex of human nasal septal cartilage (hNC) with polycaprolactone (PCL) for transplantation into cartilaginous skeletal defects and evaluated their characteristics., Methods: Nasal septum tissue was obtained from five patients aged ≥ 20 years who were undergoing septoplasty. hNCs were isolated and subcultured for three passages in vitro . To formulate the cell-PCL complex, we used type I collagen as an adhesive between chondrocyte and PCL. Immunofluorescence staining, cell viability and growth in the hNC-PCL complex, and mycoplasma contamination were assessed., Results: hNCs in PCL showed viability ≥ 70% and remained at these levels for 9 h of incubation at 4 °C. Immunostaining of the hNC-PCL complex also showed high expression levels of chondrocyte-specific protein, COL2A1, SOX9, and aggrecan during 24 h of clinically applicable conditions., Conclusion: The hNC-PCL complex may be a valuable therapeutic agent for implantation into injured cartilage tissue, and can be used clinically to repair cartilaginous skeletal defects. Objectives: The use of sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB) with a local anesthetic to decrease postoperative pain after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is controversial. We investigated the role of a perioperative SPB to minimize postoperative pain related to ESS in patients with chronic sinusitis through a systematic review of the relevant literature., Data Sources: PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, Embase, and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials., Review Methods: We screened the relevant literature published before June 2018. Eight articles that compared perioperative SPGB (treatment group) with a placebo or no treatment (control group) were included for this analysis of the outcomes, which included perioperative morbidities in ESS. For quantitative variables, the standardized mean difference was applied to standardize and summate the results of the studies, and the odds ratio was used in outcome of incidence analysis., Results: Intraoperative bleeding ( P < .0001), postoperative pain ( P = .0001), nausea and vomiting ( P = .0117), and recovery from sedation ( P < .0001) in the treatment group were significantly reduced compared with the control group. No significant adverse effects were reported in the enrolled studies. In subgroup analyses according to the SPGB approach (transoral or transnasal), the transnasal approach showed higher positive effects on intraoperative bleeding and postoperative pain compared to the transoral approach., Conclusion: In our study, SPGB combined with a local anesthetic for ESS effectively reduced intra-and postoperative morbidities. This procedure showed no significant adverse effects. Given the ease and effectiveness of this procedure, the transnasal approach should be highly recommended as a routine procedure compared to the transoral approach.

Objectives: The use of greater palatine canal (GPC) injections of a local anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor to decrease surgical bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is controversial. We investigated the role of a preoperative GPC injection to minimize intraoperative bleeding during ESS in patients with chronic sinusitis through a meta-analysis of the relevant literature., Data Sources: PubMed, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane database., Review Methods: We screened the relevant literature published before May of 2018. Five articles that compared the pre-operative GPC injection (treatment group) with a placebo or no treatment (control group) were included for this analysis of the outcomes, which included an endoscopic grade of nasal bleeding and intraoperative hemodynamic stability during ESS., Results: The endoscopic grade in the treatment group was significantly reduced when compared with the control group. No significant adverse effects were reported in the enrolled studies. The subgroup analyses of these results compared the concentrations of adrenalin (1:80,000 or 1:100,000), and adrenalin 1:80,000 showed significant effects on intraoperative bleeding when compared to adrenalin 1:100,000., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that GPC injections of local anesthesia with 1:80,000 adrenaline for ESS effectively reduced intraoperative bleeding. Additionally, this procedure showed no significant adverse effects, such as hemodynamic instability. However, the standardized dosing needs further investigation and more trials., Level of Evidence: Ia.

Importance: Studies have shown the controllability and porosity of polycaprolactone as well as the use of 3-dimensional (3-D) printing for nasal reconstruction in animal models. The utility of polycaprolactone with 3-D technology in nasal cartilaginous framework reconstruction in humans remains unknown., Objective: To investigate the safety and efficacy of 3-D printed, bioresorbable polycaprolactone nasal implants., Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter clinical trial comprised 20 patients with caudal septal deviations who underwent septoplasty, which used a 3-D printed polycaprolactone mesh, at 2 centers in South Korea. Patients were included if they were aged 18 to 74 years and had nasal septal deviations, Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scores greater than 20, and persistent nasal obstructions. Twenty-two patients met the inclusion criteria, but 2 patients were excluded before the operation. The study was conducted from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017., Main Outcomes and Measures: The change in total Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation score between the preoperative examination and the week 12 postoperative examination was the primary outcome. Changes in bilateral nasal cavity minimum cross-sectional area and volume on acoustic rhinometry at weeks 4 and 12 after the operation as well as changes in the nasal cavity cross-sectional area at the osteomeatal unit and nasal septum angle in the paranasal sinus on computed tomography after week 12 were among the secondary outcomes., Results: Of the 20 patients included in the study, 4 (20%) were female, 16 (80%) were male, with a mean (SD) age of 34.95 (11.96) years. The preoperative and week 12 postoperative results revealed significant changes in the minimal cross-sectional areas on acoustic rhinometry (0.41 [SD, 0.39] vs -0.11 [SD, 0.18]; difference, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.23-0.61), nasal septum angles on computed tomography (11.22 [SD, 6.57] vs 2.89 [SD, 3.12]; difference, 8.33; 95% CI, 5.08-11.58), and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scores (73.50 [SD, 19.88] vs 3.75 [SD, 6.26]; difference, 69.75; 95% CI, 59.22-80.28). The surgeons' convenience level with the procedure was favorable (visual analog scale score [SD], 90.90 [9.45]), and so were the patients' symptom improvements and satisfaction after 12 weeks (visual analog scale score [SD], 88.30 [9.87])., Conclusions and Relevance: The 3-D printed, homogeneous, composite, microporous polycaprolactone nasal implant demonstrated proper mechanical support and thinness with excellent biocompatibility and surgical manipulability. Polycaprolactone may be a clinically biocompatible material for use in various craniofacial reconstructions in the future.

Objectives Dexmedetomidine has sympatholytic, sedative, anesthetic, and analgesic effects, as well as vasoconstrictive effects, which may help prevent hypotension under general anesthesia. This meta-analysis aimed to perform a systematic review of the literature and investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on perioperative morbidity following nasal surgery and its adverse effects. Data Sources MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane database. Review Methods Two authors independently searched the databases from their inception to March 2017. Studies were selected that compared perioperative dexmedetomidine administration (dexmedetomidine groups) with a placebo or remifentanil (control groups) with regard to intraoperative morbidity, including surgical time, bleeding amount, hypotension, and bradycardia during operation, and postoperative morbidity, such as emergence agitation, nausea and vomiting, and sedation after operation. Results Surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, dose of inhaled anesthetic gas, dose of fentanyl, postoperative pain, and incidence of emergence agitation were significantly lower in the dexmedetomidine group versus the placebo group. In contrast, there were no significant differences in intraoperative hemodynamic stability and postoperative residual sedation and nausea and vomiting between groups. Additionally, compared with remifentanil (a currently widely used agent), dexmedetomidine was superior in view of postoperative pain and intraoperative blood pressure control. Conclusion This meta-analysis shows that the systemic administration of dexmedetomidine can decrease surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, and doses of intraoperative inhaled anesthetic gas and fentanyl as compared with placebo. It can also decrease postoperative pain and incidence of the emergence agitation. Due to the small number of studies, further clinical trials are needed to confirm these results.

Objectives The perioperative administration of magnesium is known to reduce postoperative morbidities in adults, such as pain, agitation, and laryngospasm. The objective is to assess the effects of perioperative magnesium as the adjuvant to tonsillectomy as compared with tonsillectomy in children. Data Source Five databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane). Method Two authors independently searched databases up to January 2017. We compared perioperative magnesium administration (magnesium groups) with no administration of magnesium (control group). The following outcomes were measured: postoperative pain intensity, analgesics administration, or other morbidities (laryngospasm, agitation, postoperative bleeding) in the postoperative 24 hours. Additionally, to evaluate the discrepancy of effects according to different administration routes, subgroup analyses regarding effects according to systemic or local administration of magnesium were performed. Results Nine prospective randomized controlled studies (n = 615) that evaluated the effect of magnesium in children having undergone tonsillectomy met inclusion criteria. Compared with control group, the time for first analgesic requirement was significantly delayed in magnesium groups (standardized mean difference = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.20-1.31; P = .0079). Laryngospasm (log odds ratio = -1.09; 95% CI,-2.11 to -0.07; P = .0362) and agitation score (standardized mean difference = -0.67; 95% CI, -0.97 to -0.36; P < .0001) in the recovery room also significantly decreased in magnesium groups. In subgroup analyses regarding pain and laryngospasm-related measurements, local administration of magnesium was shown to be more effective at reducing postoperative morbidities. Conclusions Perioperative magnesium regardless of route may offer pain, agitation, and laryngospasm relief without adverse effects in pediatric tonsillectomy. Based on the high heterogeneity of results within some parameters, further studies need to be performed to affirm these results.

Rhinoplasty is the most common facial plastic surgical procedure, and the occurrence of periorbital edema and ecchymosis is normal after rhinoplasty. The goal of this study was to perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of the efficacy of postoperative care of edema and ecchymosis following rhinoplasty. Two authors independently searched the databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) from inception to September 2016. We included studies that compared postoperative care methods (intervention groups) with no treatment (control group) where the outcomes of interest were edema, ecchymosis, and satisfaction rate of patients on postoperative days. Sufficient data for meta-analysis were retrieved for 11 trials with a total of 627 patients. Eyelid edema and ecchymosis during the first 7 days postoperatively were statistically decreased in the arnica administration groups versus the control group. Eyelid edema and ecchymosis during the first 24 h postoperatively were statistically decreased in the cold compression group versus the control group. The ratio of patient satisfaction was statistically higher in the tapping application group than in the control group. However, the analysis indicated that surgeons had a significant tendency to decrease intranasal packing. The administration of arnica, cold compression, and tape could reduce eyelid edema and ecchymosis. Intranasal packing was associated with more adverse effects in terms of postoperative ecchymosis compared to non-packing. However, additional trials with thorough research methodologies should be conducted to confirm the results of this study.

Objective We evaluated the severity of olfactory impairment according to risk factors, compared responses with risk factors and treatment timing, and investigated prognosis according to treatments. Study design Case series with chart review. Setting Tertiary referral center. Subjects and Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients complaining of loss of their sense of smell between January 2006 and May 2016. In total, 491 patients were included. We evaluated olfactory function using the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center test (threshold test) and Cross-cultural Smell Identification Test. Results Post-upper respiratory infection patients showed better results than those with other risk factors (59.6% recovered). Patients with head trauma (12.5% recovered) and congenital olfactory dysfunction (0% recovered) showed poorer results. Earlier treatment showed better olfactory recovery outcomes for post-upper respiratory infection ( P = .001), head trauma ( P = .022), and nasal/sinus surgery ( P = .009). Xerostomia ( P = .73) and idiopathy ( P = .365) showed no significant difference in terms of treatment timing. The threshold test better reflected subjective recovery than the identification test. The systemic + topical steroid group and the systemic steroid treatment group both showed better smell recovery outcomes than the group with topical treatment alone (both, P < .001). However, there was no significant difference between the systemic treatment group and the systemic + topical treatment group ( P = .978). Conclusions Our findings suggest that the duration of smell loss is important for better olfactory outcomes with most etiologies. Also, the effects of systemic steroids were better than those of topical steroids, regardless of combined treatment.

Postoperative pain and wound healing following tonsillectomy can result in dissatisfaction for the patient. However, there is no consensus on whether postoperatively administered honey effectively reduces morbidity after tonsillectomy. Therefore, a systematic review with a meta-analysis of the efficacy of honey as a treatment for postoperative pain and wound healing was performed. Two authors independently searched the database records (MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane databases) dating from inception to June 2014. Studies comparing postoperative oral administration of honey with administration of placebo where the outcomes of interest were pain and wound healing on postoperative days were included. Baseline study characteristics, study quality, numbers of patients in steroid-treated and control groups, and treatment outcomes were extracted. Sufficient data for meta-analysis were retrieved from 4 trials with a total of 264 patients. We analyzed patient-reported pain scores and quantities of administered analgesics during the first 5 postoperative days. The pain score was significantly decreased in the honey-treated patients in comparison with the placebo-treated patients on postoperative day 1 only, but the analgesic intake of the honey-treated patients on the first 5 postoperative days was significantly less than that of the placebo-treated patients. In addition, honey significantly increased tonsillectomy bed wound healing in comparison with placebo during the first 2 weeks after surgery. This meta-analysis shows that postoperative administration of honey after tonsillectomy significantly reduces pain and promotes wound healing. Further trials comparing honey with good research methodology should be conducted to confirm these results.

Transnasal endoscopy can cause pain or discomfort for the patient. Topical anesthetic has been used in an attempt to reduce this. However, there is no consensus on whether topical anesthetic is effective in optimizing patient experience during the procedure. The goal of this study was to perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of the efficacy of topical anesthetic on pain and comfort outcomes during endoscopy. Two authors independently searched the databases from inception to September 2013. Studies comparing topical anesthetic with placebo where the outcomes of interest were pain, comfort, or side effect outcomes were included. Sufficient data for meta-analysis were retrieved for ten trials with a total of 837 patients. The evidence suggests that local anesthetic alone or in combination with a vasoconstrictor is beneficial to patients' pain [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.21; p = 0.045] and comfort (SMD = -0.51; p < 0.001) outcomes when performing transnasal endoscopy. However, the topical anesthetic caused unpleasant sensation with respect to an unpleasant taste (SMD = 0.77; p < 0.001). In addition, there was no significant difference between a topical anesthetic spray and cotton type in pain and discomfort values. Applying topical anesthetic during transnasal endoscopy could reduce pain and discomfort. The spray and cotton type methods of topical anesthetic preparation showed no significant difference in terms of pain and discomfort during the procedure. However, further trials with good research methodology should be conducted to confirm our results.

Recently, the endoscopic transsphenoidal approach for sphenoid sinus or intracranial lesion has gained more popularity and the study of the surgical anatomy and relationships of the sphenoid sinus has gained increased significance. The aim of this study was to clarify the anatomical features of the sphenoid sinus including surrounding structures as seen in the operative view of endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery. The various distances in the sphenoid sinus as well as the relationships between the sphenoid sinus ostium (SO) and important structures such as the optic canal (OC) and carotid artery (CA) according to the presence of Onodi cell (sphenoethmoidal cell; Onodi group vs. non-Onodi group) were assessed using multiplanar and three-dimensional model of CT scans in 100 patients. The SO was more inferior in Onodi group and located superior to the lowest point of the sella. The horizontal distance from the SO to sella was approximately 13 or 14 mm depending on the existence of Onodi cells. Regardless of Onodi cell, the whole course of the OC in the sinus ran superolaterally to inferomedially in the endoscopic view. However, Onodi cell made the angles from the SO to OC larger. In Onodi group, the CA was located from the SO in a superolateral direction, but in non-Onodi group, the CA was located from the SO in the inferolateral direction. This study provides anatomical information about the sphenoid sinus, with important surgical distances between the SO and surrounding structures measured, which is essential to avoid complications during transsphenoidal surgery.

The maxillary artery (MA) is the main source of brisk bleeding during maxillectomy and procedures in the subcondylar portion of the mandible. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the MA and the mandible in the infratemporal fossa. The CT scans of 100 patients were retrospectively evaluated. The distances from the MA to bony landmarks were assessed in a three-dimensional model of the CT scan. In the cases where the MA was lateral to the LP [164 of 200 MAs (82%)], the mean shortest distances from the MA to the apex of the coronoid and condyle and the deepest portion of the mandibular notch were 13.6 ± 1.6 mm, 21.3 ± 2.0 mm, and 3.6 ± 1.0 mm, respectively. The contact point between the MA and medial surface of the mandible was measured and found to be 3.6 ± 2.2 mm posterior and 1.7 ± 1.4 mm inferior relative to the deepest portion of the mandibular notch. In the cases where the MA was medial to the LP [36 of 200 MAs (18%)], the mean shortest distances from the MA to the apex of the coronoid and condyle and the deepest portion of the mandibular notch were 19.5 ± 2.5 mm, 20.7 ± 2.4 mm, and 16.3 ± 3.7 mm, respectively. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the anatomy of the infraorbital foramen (IOF), infraorbital canal (IOC), and infraorbital groove (IOG) with regard to surgical and invasive procedures using three-dimensional reconstruction of CT scans., Methods: The CT scans of 100 patients were evaluated retrospectively. The morphology of the IOF, IOC, and IOG as well as their relationships to different anatomic landmarks was assessed in a three-dimensional model., Results: The mean length of the IOC and IOG and the angle of the IOC relative to IOG were 11.7 ± 1.9, 16.7 ± 2.4 mm, and 145.5° ± 8.5°, respectively. The mean angles of the IOC relative to vertical and horizontal planes were 13.2° ± 6.4° and 46.7° ± 7.6°, respectively. In the relationships between the IOF and different anatomic landmarks, the mean distances from the IOF to supraorbital notch/foramen, facial midline, and infraorbital rim were 5.6 ± 3.1 mm laterally, 26.5 ± 1.9 mm laterally, and 9.6 ± 1.7 mm inferiorly, respectively. The mean distance from the IOF to anterior nasal spine (ANS) was 35.0 ± 2.6 mm, and the mean angle of the axis that passed the IOF and ANS relative to horizontal plane was 28.8° ± 4.1°. In addition, the mean soft tissue thickness overlying the IOF was 11.4 ± 1.9 mm., Conclusions: These results provide detailed knowledge of the anatomical characteristics and clinical importance of the IOF. Such knowledge is of paramount importance for surgeons when performing maxillofacial surgery and regional block anesthesia.
