Abstract: We present progress of the analysis of multicrystalline silicon and of improvements of our understanding of material related performance limits of solar cells. Aspects covered are advanced numerical simulation, experimental results on carrier lifetime distributions, detailed analysis of the defect luminescence spectrum, and findings about breakdown behaviour. Modelling of impurity redistribution, specifically iron, with respect to high temperature steps enlightens mechanisms governing the phosphorus diffusion and aluminium gettering in heterogeneous systems. Evidence of outdiffusion of metallic impurities from grain boundaries, after high temperature steps, is given by analysing spatially resolved carrier lifetime measurements. In addition to lifetime, we present defect luminescence spectra measured by photoluminescence spectroscopy, including an interpretation of the origin of a remarkably temperature stable emission line at 838meV. Finally, defect luminescence is connected to the origin of pre-breakdown of solar cells at reverse bias, a topic which is of high interest especially in context with the increased usage of purified metallurgical grade silicon. Objective. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is one of the most severe risk factors in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) regarding all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. It contributes to the risk of sudden cardiac death which accounts for approximately 25% of deaths in ESKD patients. Electrocardiography (ECG) is the least expensive way to assess whether a patient has LVH, but manual annotation is cumbersome. Thus, an automated approach has been developed to derive ECG-based LVH parameters. The aim of the current study is to compare automatic to manual measurements and to investigate their predictive value for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Approach. From the 12-lead 24 h ECG measurements of 301 ESKD patients undergoing haemodialysis, three different LVH parameters were calculated. Peguero-Lo Presti voltage, Cornell voltage, and Sokolow-Lyon voltage were automatically derived and compared to the manual annotations. To determine the agreement between manual and automatic measurements and their predictive value, Bland-Altman plots were created and Cox regression analysis for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality was performed. Main results. The median values for the automatic assessment were: Peguero-Lo Presti voltage 1.76 mV (IQR 1.29-2.55), Cornell voltage 1.14 mV (IQR 0.721-1.66), and Sokolow-Lyon voltage 1.66 mV (IQR 1.08-2.23). The mean differences when compared to the manual measurements were -0.027 mV (0.21 SD), 0.027 mV (0.13 SD) and -0.025 mV (0.24 SD) for Peguero-Lo Presti, Cornell, and Sokolow-Lyon voltage, respectively. The categorial LVH detection based on pre-defined thresholds differed in only 13 cases for all indices between manual and automatic assessment. Proportional hazard ratios only differed slightly in categorial LVH detection between manually and automatically determined LVH parameters; no differences could be found for continuous parameters. Significance. This study provides evidence that automatic algorithms can be as reliable in LVH parameter assessment and risk prediction as manual measurements in ESKD patients undergoing haemodialysis., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

In non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), the elimination of wheat results in a clear symptom improvement, but gluten has still not been proven as (the sole) trigger. Due to the increase in the prevalence of gluten-related diseases, the breeding of high-performance wheat cultivars is discussed as a trigger. To analyze the immune stimulation and signal pathways, the immune cells of healthy subjects and patients with NCGS were stimulated with gliadins from wheat, and the expression and secretion of interleukin 1ß (IL1ß) and interleukin 6 (IL6) were studied. To determine the impact of wheat breeding, the monocyte cell line THP1 and human immune cells were stimulated with gliadin, glutenin, and albumin/globulin fractions of ancient and modern cereals, and expression of inflammatory molecules was checked. Immune cells of patients with NCGS showed an increased expression of IL1ß and IL6 after stimulation with gliadins compared to immune cells of healthy controls. Gliadins caused a strong activation of P-STAT3 in immune cells of healthy controls, and inhibitors of JAK and NFκB pathways considerably reduced this response. In addition to gliadins, we further showed that glutenins and albumin/globulins from all wheat cultivars from the last century, and especially from einkorn and spelt, also markedly induced the expression of inflammatory genes in THP1 and human immune cells. There was no correlation between enhanced immune stimulation and ancient or modern cultivars. This does not support the hypothesis that modern wheat breeding is responsible for the increase in gluten-related diseases. An altered immune situation is suggested in patients with NCGS.

Background: In hemodialysis patients, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) contributes to high cardiovascular mortality. We examined cardiovascular mortality prediction by the recently proposed Peguero-Lo Presti voltage since it identifies more patients with electrocardiographic (ECG) LVH than Cornell or Sokolow-Lyon voltages., Methods: A total of 308 patients on hemodialysis underwent 24 h ECG recordings. LVH parameters were measured before and after dialysis. The primary endpoint of cardiovascular mortality was recorded during a median 3-year follow up. Risk prediction was assessed by Cox regression, both unadjusted and adjusted for the Charlson Comorbidity Index and the Cardiovascular Mortality Risk Score., Results: The Peguero-Lo Presti voltage identified with 21% the most patients with positive LVH criteria. All voltages significantly increased during dialysis. Factors such as ultrafiltration rate, Kt/V, body mass index, sex, and phosphate were the most relevant for these changes. During follow-up, 26 cardiovascular deaths occurred. Post-dialysis Peguero-Lo Presti cut-off as well as the Peguero-Lo Presti and Cornell voltages were independently associated with cardiovascular mortality in unadjusted and adjusted analysis. The Sokolow-Lyon voltage was not significantly associated with mortality. An optimal cut-off for the prediction of cardiovascular mortality was estimated at 1.38 mV for the Peguero-Lo Presti., Conclusions: The post-dialysis Peguero-Lo Presti cut-off as well as the Peguero-Lo Presti and Cornell voltages allowed independent risk prediction of cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Cohort studies often provide a large array of data on study participants. The techniques of statistical learning can allow an efficient way to analyze large datasets in order to uncover previously unknown, clinically relevant predictors of morbidity or mortality. We applied a combination of elastic net penalized Cox regression and stability selection with the aim of identifying novel predictors of mortality in a cohort of prevalent hemodialysis patients. In our analysis we included 475 patients from the "rISk strAtification in end-stage Renal disease" (ISAR) study, who we split into derivation and confirmation cohorts. A wide array of examinations was available for study participants, resulting in over a hundred potential predictors. In the selection approach many of the well established predictors were retrieved in the derivation cohort. Additionally, the serum levels of IL-12p70 and AST were selected as mortality predictors and confirmed in the withheld subgroup. High IL-12p70 levels were specifically prognostic of infection-related mortality. In summary, we demonstrate an approach how statistical learning can be applied to a cohort study to derive novel hypotheses in a data-driven way. Our results suggest a novel role of IL-12p70 in infection-related mortality, while AST is a promising additional biomarker in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Plants interact with a myriad of microorganisms that modulate their interactions within the community. A well-described example is the symbiosis between grasses and Epichloë fungal endophytes that protects host plants from herbivores. It is suggested that these symbionts could play a protective role for plants against pathogens through the regulation of their growth and development and/or the induction of host defences. However, other endophyte-mediated ecological mechanisms involved in disease avoidance have been scarcely explored. Here we studied the endophyte impact on plant disease caused by the biotrophic fungus, Claviceps purpurea, under field conditions through (1) changes in the survival of the pathogen´s resistance structure (sclerotia) during overwintering on the soil surface, and (2) effects on insects responsible for the transportation of pathogen spores. This latter mechanism is tested through a visitor exclusion treatment and the measurement of plant volatile cues. We found no significant effects of the endophyte on the survival of sclerotia and thus on disease inocula. However, both pathogen incidence and severity were twofold lower in endophyte-symbiotic plants than in non-symbiotic ones, though when insect visits were prevented this difference disappeared. Endophyte-symbiotic and non-symbiotic plots presented different emission patterns of volatiles suggesting that they can play a role in this protection. We show a novel indirect ecological mechanism by which endophytes can defend host grasses against diseases through negatively interacting with intermediary vectors of the epidemic process.

Certain Pooideae species form persistent symbiosis with fungal endophytes of Epichloë genus. Although endophytes are known to impact the ecology and evolution of host species, their effects on parameters related with quality of plant biomass has been elusive. This article provides information about parameters related with the quality of plant litter biomass of two important grass species (Schedonorus phoenix and Schedonorus pratensis) affected by the symbiosis with fungal endophytes (Epichloë coenophiala and Epichloë uncinata, respectively). Four population origins of S. phoenix and one of S. pratensis were included. Mineral, biochemical and structural parameters were obtained from three samples per factors combination [species (and population origin)×endophyte]. This data can be potentially used in other studies which, by means of 'data reanalyzing' or meta-analysis, attempt to find generalizations about endophyte effects on host plant litter biomass. The present data is associated with the research article "Role of foliar fungal endophytes on litter decomposition among species and population origins" (Gundel et al., In preparation) [1].

Micro-Raman (μRS) and micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy (μPLS) are demonstrated as valuable characterization techniques for fundamental research on silicon as well as for technological issues in the photovoltaic production. We measure the quantitative carrier recombination lifetime and the doping density with submicron resolution by μPLS and μRS. μPLS utilizes the carrier diffusion from a point excitation source and μRS the hole density-dependent Fano resonances of the first order Raman peak. This is demonstrated on micro defects in multicrystalline silicon. In comparison with the stress measurement by μRS, these measurements reveal the influence of stress on the recombination activity of metal precipitates. This can be attributed to the strong stress dependence of the carrier mobility (piezoresistance) of silicon. With the aim of evaluating technological process steps, Fano resonances in μRS measurements are analyzed for the determination of the doping density and the carrier lifetime in selective emitters, laser fired doping structures, and back surface fields, while μPLS can show the micron-sized damage induced by the respective processes.
